Profile Henry Warren For Henry Warren, life means new challenges

When Henry Warren retired from the state’s environmental arena nearly 19 years ago, he was looking for new challenges. Re-tirement led Henry first to Pine Tree Legal Assistance, which aids low-income families, and subsequently to AARP, where he served as state president. After completing a chaplain’s program, Henry served at the Barron Center.

In 2002 a search for a more spiritual side of life led Henry to join with a likeminded local group to form the Chaplaincy Insti-tute of Maine, which seeks to train chaplains for service in the community and to energize spiritual awakening.

Henry’s involvement with seniors at the Barron Center and AARP eventually led him to OLLI, where he is now learning the ropes as Resource Development Chair. He took over the post from Dick Sturgeon, who had been elected chair the Advisory Board.

A Pittsburgh native, Henry graduated from Cornell University. After a three-year Army tour of duty, he returned to earn a gradu-ate degree in Public Administration at the University of Pitts-burgh. He began his work in public administration as Assistant Town Manager of Windsor, Connecticut, later moving to Ver-mont to become Town Manager of what he terms the “upscale” town of Woodstock.

Henry then decided to come to Maine to serve as director of the newly formed Greater Portland Council of Governments.

An OLLI student stopped by the office the other day. She wanted to know when the next OLLI term begins. We told her January 10. She smiled and lamented, “But what am I supposed to DO from early November until January 10?” She was only half joking.

This fall term has been amazing. We are currently running 47 courses, nine Saturday workshops, and nine SAGE lectures. We have partnered with the Maine Hellenic Society and the World Affairs Council of Maine to offer three wonderful lectures.

We had a reception for all the contributors to this year’s outstanding issue of Reflections, our journal of art and literature by OLLI members. We also partnered with a theater production, directed by Mel Howards, which offered an intriguing show with a follow-up discussion.

We’ve partnered with the Osher Map Library to offer special tours of the current exhibit by our own Jerry and Monique Collins and partnered with the Muskie School to offer a brown bag lunch presenta-tion on elder abuse.

We have ongoing partnerships with both the English Department and English for Speakers of Other Languages here at USM.

We have Special Interest Groups that offer OLLI members opportunities in photography, recorders, book discussion, Mah jongg, walking, skiing, acting, and dining.

By the time you read this, we will have presented The OLLI Follies, our marvelous variety show, as well as held our first OLLI book sale.

WOW! All of these things are made possible through the efforts of OLLI volunteers! I am constant-ly surprised and impressed by this program!

OLLI Singers and Senior Players to Perform

On Saturday. Nov. 5, the OLLI Singers and Senior Players will present their new and exciting pro-grams at The Wishcamper Center, starting at 1:30 p.m.

Please join the OLLI Singers in room 102 at 1:30 to hear their latest renditions of old and new cho-ral favorites, selected for their humor and perhaps a bit of nostalgia.

At 2:30, following the Singers, the OLLI Senior Players will present an exciting array of new mate-rial, comedy as well as serious theater, to liven up the rest of the afternoon. They will perform in room 133 (the auditorium next to the atrium). Both groups will provide refreshments for a post-performance reception.

What a pleasant way to spend an afternoon among friends! There is no admission charge. So come and bring non-OLLI friends as well. This is a good way to introduce them to some of what OLLI has to offer.

OLLI Advisory Board This month I want to share with you some news about two

OLLI events that I am excited about and proud to have in our program. I attended The OLLI Follies on Oct. 15 and was truly blown away by the amount and level of talent in the 15 acts that were presented.

Many thanks to Jack Lynch and his committee for their hard work in producing this OLLI community program. If you missed the Follies this time, make it a point to attend next year and you will not be disappointed.

I am looking forward to the spring event titled “A Wrinkle in Time,” which will focus on the social and historical im-pacts of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. The material I have seen thus far promises a wonderful learning experience. Don’t miss it!

Meanwhile, the Fall Term is going very well with many outstanding courses, and the Winter Term is shaping up to be our largest Winter Term ever, with around 30 courses to be offered.

Warren (cont’d from page 1)

In 1970, at a time when the environmental movement was gaining strength, he began his career in state government, joining the Environmental Improvement Commission. When the Commission was raised to Cabinet status and became the Department of Environmental Protection, he eventually be-came Commissioner. A number of new programs were started during this period. As he notes, “We started out with 35 people, and when I left in the late 1980s, there were 325.”

He left that post after a change of administrations, but he continued to work in state agencies in-volved in environmental issues, including the Bureau of Public Improvements, which manages facili-ties owned by the state government and assists school districts with environmental issues.

Henry likes to sing, so he and two others formed “The Harbour Singers” to give support to patients in hospices and nursing homes in Southern Maine. “We sing ‘comfort songs’ — hymns, spiritual mu-sic, John Lennon, Golden Oldies, and Broadway hits — since residents can easily connect with them.” He’s been a regular in the OLLI Singers after the late Jean Childs, who served with him on the DEP board, encouraged him. “I thought I was a tenor, but Terry Foster encouraged me to go down the musi-cal scale. It wasn’t easy to learn the new notes, but it was the right part for me.”

Henry is married to Domenica Cipollone, also an active OLLI member, and has lived in Cape Eliza-beth for 29 years.

Active Caring Conference in November Dear OLLI Members,

Next April, USM’s School of Education and Human Development, in partnership with the Libra Foundation, OLLI, and several other entities, is sponsoring a conference entitled “Active Caring: Life Stories of Helping in a Challenging Environment.” Our keynote speaker will be Dr. Kristen Monroe, from the University of California at Irvine.

Here is the link to a website that describes this conference in greater detail:

Guest lecture planned at Osher Map Library The Osher Map Library will host a guest lecture event Thursday evening, Nov. 17, in connection with its current exhibit, The Grand Tour and the Development of Tourism 1600–1900, at the Sam L. Cohen Educa-tional Center at the Library.

Benjamin Bertram, professor of English at USM, will discuss Coryat’s Crudities, Thomas Coryat’s account of his Grand Tour of Europe in 1608. He will also tell of Coryat’s last travels to Jerusalem in 1613 and then, on foot, to India in 1614.

A reception and viewing of the exhibit will take place from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m., with Bertram’s talk to follow from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Please RSVP by Friday, Nov. 11, to 780-4850 or [email protected]

OLLI students invited to Osher map exhibit OLLI students have an opportunity Tuesday, Nov. 8, to attend a docent-led tour of a special exhib-

it at the Osher Map Library and Smith Center for Cartographic Education. The exhibit, The Grand Tour and Development of Tourism, traces the Grand Tour as a rite of passage for the British gentry from about 1660 until the early modern era (the 1840s), when railroad and steamships introduced mass tourism as we experience it today.

The tour runs from 11:45 a.m. to 12:25 p.m. Meet in the Cohen Educational Center on the first floor of the Osher Map Library for the tour.

Since gallery capacity is limited to 25, OLLI students should RSVP by calling 780-4850 or by e-mailing [email protected].

Walking Club plans visit to new site in

November Wednesday, Nov. 9: The

Walking Club will visit a new location, the Gambo Property in Windham, part of the Presumpscot Regional Land Trust. We will see the remains of the old powder mill as we walk along the canal towpath.

Tuesday, Nov. 22: We will vis-it River Point in Falmouth off Gray Road, a walk we tried last year. Parking is at the right of the Hannaford parking lot as you face the store.

For both trips, we meet at 10:00 a.m.to carpool. Park at the Back Cove parking area across from Hannaford, at the end nearest Marginal Way. Bring your lunch and water, and wear hiking shoes and warm clothing.

Ski Club meets November 2 to

discuss plans for next season

The OLLI Ski Club will start its third season with a meeting for interested mem-bers to discuss the club’s cal-endar of events. The meeting will be on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 11:45 a.m. in the second-floor lounge of the Wishcamper Center. Attend-ance is optional.

Weather permitting (yes, that phrase means something different for Ski Club mem-bers), the first XC and down-hill events will be in mid-December.

To receive e-mail about OLLI Ski Club activities, send your e-mail or other contact info and preferences (XC, DH, or both) to Steve Do-nahoe at [email protected] or call 239-6517 (9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.).

OLLI NIGHT OUT: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER

18 The November OLLI

Night Out will be at 5 p.m. on Friday, November 18, at Ro-mano’s Macaroni Grill, 415 Philbrook Avenue, South Portland (near the Maine Mall). We have never tried having this dutch-treat event on a weekend night because most restaurants don’t want to book larger groups except on one of their slower nights dur-ing the week. But Macaroni Grill is willing to accommo-date us on a Friday night. Maybe more folks will join us since so many people like to go out on the weekends and often stay around home on a Monday or Tuesday night, the usual OLLI Night Out time. All OLLI members and friends are welcome.

To make reservations, please leave a message for Terry Foster at 780-4895 or e-mail him at [email protected]. Let him know if you need transportation.
