    major employer in the Salinas Valley or many years. Te Sugar actory closed 25years ago in 1982. Join historian J im Conway to discover the beginning o the SugarCompany, the creation o the company town Spreckels, and the impact on the Sali-nas Valley. Using Eugenes eld work in Egypt as a starting point, we will discover howthe Egyptians mummied their dead; how they built the pyramids; why they had somany bizarre gods; and what it was like to go to church in ancient Egypt.     WhithernoWindividualism, multiculturalism, assimilationismorcosmopolitianism

    Berteaux questions the import and politics o race and racism within the tradition o individualistliberalism. Berteaux examines the inheritance o race and discusses how that inheritance is mu-tated by the lived experience o aggrieved racial groups. Being critical o both classical individualistliberalism and group supremacy, John Berteaux, discusses how we, as a society, need a deeper, moreinclusive, ne grained, sensitive understanding o race and racism.

    John Bertea ux is a member o the CSU MB Philoso phy acult y teaching P hilosophy, Diversity, Justice, Social Eth ics, and Biomedic alEthics. John is a Fellow o the Institute or Ethics and Public Aairs at San Diego State University. In 1999 he won the Outstanding

    Dr. Douglas Smith is an environmental scientist using a suite o technologies to teach and learn about Earths natural and managed

    systems. He is known or interdiscipl inary work applying geolog y, hydrolog y, and marine geology to solve environmental problems.

    Dr. Josina M. Makau, Proessor o Philosophy and Communication and Co-Coordinator o CSUMBs Program in Practical andProessional Ethics, received her doctorate in Rhetoric rom UC Berkeley. One o CSUMBs Founding Faculty, Dr. Makau is a leadingauthority in the area o communication ethics. She served previously at Ohio State University, where she received the universitys topteaching award.

    Patrick Watson:

    digital art: Where palettesand pixels collide

    With the recent evolution o digital creative technology, artists are now merging paint and pixels oncanvas as never beore. Tis phenomenon can be witnessed with the explosion o gicle and artist-enhanced gicle prints in commercial galleries and the emergence o abstract imagery in multi-media creative screen projects. Patrick Watson will describe the technical, creative and aestheticissues that these new technologies present.

    Patrick Watson has been internationally published and exhibited with group and solo shows at Te ahoe Gallery, Te Nevada Mu-seum O Fine Art, Te George Eastman House, Seybold Seminars, Santa Cruz Digital Arts Festival, MacWorld and in numerouspublications, including Te Ultimate Guide o Painter, Painter Studio Secrets, Secrets O Award Winning Digital Artists, and

    more. Patrick is currently working on a book that deals with the aesthetic and technical issues presented by digital creative arts on our cultural consciousness.

    Stephanie Bush is currently conducting Post-Doctoral research at the Monterey Bay

    Aquarium Research Institute. Stephanie has taught Marine Biology at Harvard Univer-

    Seas Program, and General Biology, Ani mal Biology and Invertebrate Zoology at theUniversity o Caliornia Berkeley.

    Tis course explores and celebrates American womens poetic voices, rom EmilyDickinson to our own Proessor Mossberg. Lectures, readings, and class discus-sions will look at how womens lives-as daughters, mothers, riends, lovers, leaders--translate into ruth and Beauty through their art, and relate to and inspire each oour own lives. How does everyday lie, stress, routine, crisis, and happiness becomeimmortal and essential wisdom expressing love, sorrow, joy, comedy and tragedy,and all that it means to be ully conscious on this earth? While the course is orga-nized around Emily Dickinson, writers include Gertrude Stein, Sylvia Plath, NikkiGiovanni, Elizabeth Bishop, and contemporary poets up through Dr. Mossberg.(4 meetings)

    Barbara Mossberg is a prize-winning poet and teacher, and international authority on

    Emily Dickinson. Her book, Emily Dickinson: When A Writer Is A Daugher, was named

    by Choice Outstanding Academic Book o the Year. Mossberg is known as a scholar and

    lecturer o American studies and literature worldwide, including or Stein and Plath,

    on whom she recently lectured at Oxord University. She has twice held the prestigious

    Bicentennial Chair o American Studies at the University o Helsinki as the Senior

    Fulbright Distinguished Lecturer, and the Senior Fulbright American Poetry Seminar at

    the University o Rome. She directs the Integated Studies program and is proessor o

    o First Year Seminar at CSUMB.

    As Caliornia continues to grow at a pace o 500,000 persons per annum, the battlesover water will continue to be ront and center on the public policy stage. Asconcern about global climate change grows, and solutions are sought, water will beone o three major topics within that emerging public policy debate and search orsolutions. Tis oering will be presented in six sessions.

    california Water history, policy, planning, and politics: First, there willbe two sessions concerning Caliornia water histor y, policy, planning and politics.Tese two sessions will reach back to the initial ounding days o Caliornia, andtrack water histor y through the mid-1800s to today. Tis will be the oundation orunderstanding the second and third sections o this oering.

    central coast Water issues: Second, there will be two sessions concerning howsuch history, policies, planning and politics impact the topic o water in the CentralCoast, especially in Monterey County and Santa Cruz County. Tis is the dry sideo the water issue in that it is on the land, as opposed to the ocean.

    central coast marine issues: Tird, there will be two sessions concerningcoastal and marine issues. Tis is the wet side o the water issue. Tese two ses-sions will ocus on marine policy, including the Marine Lie Management Act o1998, and the Marine Lie Protection Act o 1999, which led to the recent adoptiono 29 Marine Protected Areas, covering 204 square miles along the Central Coast.(6 meetings)

    Facilitator:Fred Keeley is currently the Treasurer o the County o Santa Cruz. Prior to his appoint

    ment and election as County Treasurer, Mr. Keeley served or two years as Executive

    Director o the Planning and Conservation League. From 1996 through 2002, Mr.

    Keeley represented the Monterey Bay area in the Caliornia State Assembly. Mr. Keeley

    served as Speaker pro Tempore or three Speakers, a record in the term-limited era o

    the legislature. Mr. Keeley authored the Marine Lie Management Act o 1998, and

    was principal co-author o the Marine Lie Management Act o 1999. Mr. Keeley alsoauthored the two largest park and environmental protection bonds in the nations

    history (Proposition 12 in 2000, and Proposition 40 in 2002). Mr. Keeley serves on the

    Caliornia Ocean Science Trust, a statutory state body, which Mr. Keeley established

    through legislation in 2002.

Closer to home, Te Monterey Institute or Research in Astronomy (MIRA)astronomers are searching or that one o thousands o asteroids that may strikethe earth and nding hints in distant stars that the sun may suddenly experience asuper-fare. Join MIRA research astronomers or an intimate, inside look into ourcurrent understanding o the Universe and how weve learned it.
