As the nights draw in and the temperature starts to drop (not too quickly hopefully) the rugby season is once again upon us. Having put the upset of last season’s 1st XV relegation behind us, the club has started preparations for the 2014-15 season firmly on the front foot.

The pre-season turnout has been fantastic with numbers being the biggest we’ve seen in recent years. Both new

& retuning players have been making themselves available week after week to form a squad full of strength and depth in every position. This means that competition between players will be greater than ever this year and will ensure that we all push each other to new heights in our fitness and skill levels.

The club renovations are progressing at a great pace. Stage two has now been completed and stage three is well underway. As the year moves on, we will see the club & clubhouse undergo a transformation from a good into a great one.

As I move into my second season as chairman of the club, I look forward to working with the new and continuing members of the committee in helping to develop the club off the field. At the same time, the coaches will be doing the hard work mid-week and at weekends, combining the knowledge of the older players with the skills and fitness of the younger ones to form one complete squad. Last season, unfortunately we had to utilise the players we have to ensure the 1st XV and 2nd XV teams could fulfil their match obligations. This regrettably resulted is us having to abandon our aspirations to field our 3rd XV team. This season, we will be continuing to focus on fielding two strong teams every week along with a resurrected Veterans XV enjoying a number of friendlies lined up throughout the season.

Even though the numbers have been good at training already this season, the recruitment of new players remains a crucial factor if the club is to survive for years to come. This aspect is one where all of us can assist. We as a club, need the help of our members and friends to attract new players. Whether new to the sport, retuning after a break, home from University or having just left school, all are very welcome. I ask that everyone try and encourage at least one person this season to come along and see what we at OWRFC have to offer.

As with any club, there are always plenty of jobs to be completed. Be it on a game day or helping to arrange an event, if you are in a position to lend a hand, please let us know. Any and all help will be gratefully received and appreciated.

With the fantastic combination we have of our players and our supporters working together as one, I am sure we will see Old Walcountians RFC have it’s best season yet!

C’mon you Counts!!!

Harry.

OWRFC President’s Reunion LunchMy thanks to everyone who attended the 2014 President’s Reunion Lunch, once again over eighty persons attended on the day and in particular my thanks to those listed below who donated £5680 towards the running and upkeep of our club. After a most enjoyable day, our first fifteen defeated Old Freemans 27-12, putting a fitting end to a very enjoyable day. I thank those of you who made cash contributions towards the raffle on the day and I hope that I have recorded the names of everyone who made donations by post or online banking, in order to do this I rely on you to return the annual attendance circular to me and I sincerely hope that I have not missed anyone out.

OW Under 21sOld Walcountians Under 21s are heading into their third season at the club after two outstanding years stacking up the silverware. As John Young has decided to take a step back, management of the team is being passed to the experienced Graham Rodd & once again we are excited and looking forward to a third consecutive successful season.

After winning the plate in the under 21s league last year against Dorking, the fresh team were under pressure to perform at the start of the new season. This season started just as the previous two, with the Cronk Cunis National Old Boys U21s tournament in Richmond. For the previous two years the team had successfully beaten off highly skilled teams such as Millfield, John Fisher and a combined St Johns/St Pauls team to win the Plate tournament. This year with the conditions being sodden and awful, many teams had dropped out of the tournament, shortening the amount of games played, but the Counts still fielded a full team of 20 players; one of the few that did and were very optimistic. Unfortunately despite our best efforts the plate proved to be out of our reach but we dug deep and managed to bring home some silverware by winning the bowl.

Three years of Cronk Cunis and a three-peat (apparently it’s a term used primarily in American sports to refer to winning three consecutive championships - I had to look it up - S. Allen) for the Counts. This is a great way to start the season which I’m sure we will continue. The next games are TBA for Christmas where the Counts will be taking on Chipstead, Old Cats, Old Alleynians and Sutton and Epsom in the league. It would be great to see as many people at the matches as possible to cheer the lads to another final. Well done to all that played in Cronk, and we are looking forward to seeing all the support at the first Christmas match.

In true Walcountians tradition, new players are always welcome - just contact me or Graham Rodd.

Remy.

Older yeomen and seasoned campaigners of OWRFC, it’s my honour (is there a higher one?) to be the captain of your Vets team, this year.

We have secured our first Vets fixture of the season, for Saturday 18 October, versus the newly-formed Old Sutts 2s. We will be looking to arrange a good few further games, for the coming months. Since we now seem to be a sizeable body of men, some of us in more ways than others! We are both delighted and grateful to Dave Rees and Dean Grehan for sponsoring a new set of shirts, which are being ordered at the time of writing.

Apparently the shirt-makers are having to increase their normal multiples of “XL”, I can’t think why. So dust off your boots, book a pass from ‘er indoors, and get yourself down to a Vets game. Alternatively, come down and watch, I’m sure that they boys would appreciate your support. And there’s always the opportunity to have a few sharpeners afterwards, with your old muckers. Gentlemen, start your engines…

Yours, beer & shoutingly,

Simmo

OWRFC Code of Conduct (Incorporating Notes for Players)

1. Match Fees will be not be charged to members (i.e. those who have paid their subscriptions in full or pay by standing order). Match fees will be £10 for non-members or those who have not yet made arrangements to pay their subscriptions. For students or unemployed members, this will be reduced to £2.50. Match fees for substitutes and reserves will be agreed with the team captain on an arbitrary basis.

2. Weekly Selection and news will be published via our website (http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/oldwalcountiansrfc/). You are expected to regularly consult the website for selection and other news. If you have not heard from the club by Wednesday evening, you should immediately contact your captain from the previous week.

3. Availability. It is assumed that you are available for selection every week unless you have advised a captain otherwise. Captains may contact you via phone, text, email or social media during the week when confirming that weeks’ team. You are expected to return/respond to that contact as soon as possible. Not responding may result in future non-selection.

4. Unavailability. If you are unavailable to represent the club on any occasion, you should advise the team secretary or your team captain. If you are aware on a Saturday of your unavailability the following week, you should make this known to your captain immediately. Giving insufficient notice that you cannot meet your commitment to play or not attending a match when expected to, will result in being “named and shamed” and may result in future non-selection.

5. Cancellation of Matches. If it seems possible that play will be cancelled owing to bad weather or any other reason you should contact the Team Secretary or captain on the Friday evening prior to the match. You should not assume that your match has been cancelled.

6. Punctuality. You should arrive at the club at the time specified on the team sheet or, exceptionally, as advised by the captain. If you wish to travel to an away ground directly, you should advise your captain no later than Thursday evening.

Page 24: Old Walcountians RFCfiles.pitchero.com/clubs/32977/owrfchandbook14-15_125789.pdf · JanuaryF Battersea Ironsides 2 3 A 10 Old Caterhamians 2L A 17 24 Old JohniansL H 31 February 7

All other teams are expected to wear club shirts/polo’s where issued.

Valuables are normally held behind the bar during a match but this is not a fool proof arrangement. Personal insurance should be arranged through your own household policies.

9. Substitutes/Reserves will be selected for 1st XV league and cup fixtures and where possible for other sides. Lower sides will go without reserves where another side would otherwise be short of players.

10. Training will take place at the club on Wednesdays (or as otherwise advised). You should meet at the club at 7.15pm in readiness for a 7.30pm start. We provide professional coaching for all players of all abilities and expect members to make an effort to train regularly. 1st XV players are expected to train on a Wednesday as a minimum and must advise the 1st XV captain or coaching staff if they are unable to train for any reason. Season 2013-2014After close calls in the previous two seasons, we finally succumbed to relegation to Surrey league division two. Having said that, we were more successful in the cups reaching the final of the Surrey Shield and the last eight of the region in the Junior Vase. Again, more of the Under 21 squad were blooded and we look forward to several young men returning from university this summer to bolster the First XV.

The aforementioned Under 21s once again won silverware at the Cronk Cunis festival and beat Dorking in the Surrey Shield final. This is a talented group of players that, each season, evolves. We do hope that you can get out to watch them. Keep an eye on the website for fixtures.

Unfortunately, we managed to field a Third XV only once this term, however, this did lead to a strong and settled Second XV really putting in great performances and giving the Coaches and Captains some selection quandaries. The team lost just three games that they competed but did suffer lost fixtures due to opposition being unable to field sides (had they heard of our monster front row?). The Vets were resurrected towards the end of the season and an appetite for more was awoken. Keep your ears to the ground for updates on the leviathans of OWRFC.

Whilst relegation is not something that we take likely, the spirit around the club was, and continues to be, good. There are no cliques at the club and the Old Walcountian sociability continues to flourish and see us through.

We look forward to a very positive season in 2014-15 with an influx of new, young players returning from uni supplementing the playing stock and honing their skills alongside some crafty old war horses!
