GENERAL INFORMATIONHousekeeping Rooms are serviced daily between 9:00 AM–3:00 PM. If you do not want housekeeping service, please display your "Do Not Disturb" sign. Front Desk We are staff ed 24 hours per day, in season. Please report any problems, disturbances, or needs you may have to the front desk. Our clerks are em pow ered to solve problems and will do their best to react appropriately.Lost & Found Please take care to ensure that you leave with all of the belongings you arrived with. Items left behind by guests are cataloged and a list is provided to the front desk. When guests call to retrieve items, or check to see if items were found in the room they occupied, we are typically able to provide a quick answer. We return items only upon request and we send them at guest expense. We retain lost or forgotten items for thirty days, then discard them.

SAFETY & SECURITY1. Do not admit unknown persons to your guestroom.2. Utilize your deadbolt to maximize security.3. Familiarize yourself with the location of the nearest fi re exit on the property layout located on the back of your guestroom door. In the unlikely event of a fi re, please move quickly but calmly to the exit. Report fi re or smoke to the front desk. Go to the area be tween the swimming pool and the road so that we can attempt to account for all of our guests. Do not panic and remain calm.4. Never leave your guestroom door open. When you depart, it is your responsibility to make sure that your guestroom door is fully latched and locked.5. Ensure your vehicle is parked in a valid parking space and not blocking traffi c or in a fi re lane.

FIRE SAFETYHotels and Motels are doing even more to make sure that guests are safe from fi re. Ask at the front desk if they have smoke detectors or automatic sprinklers. Take time to read and familiarize yourself with the fi re safety and escape in for ma tion.

Find two exits nearest your room. Count the number of doors from your room to the exits. Make sure they are un locked and un blocked.

Learn the layout of your room and how to unlock the door in the dark. Put your room key and a fl ashlight close to where you sleep. In the event of fi re, take your room key (and nothing else) with you.

Locate the fi re alarm on your fl oor. If you fi nd a fi re in your room or some where else, sound the alarm.

When you hear the fi re alarm, act, don’t investigate.

If the fi re is in your room, get out and close the door. Once out, re port the fi re to the man age ment and call the Fire de part ment.

If the fi re is not in your room, leave if you can. First, feel the door. If it’s cool, open it slowly and go out the nearest exit.

If your room door is hot, don’t open it. Your room may be the safest place to be. Call the front desk or the fi re de part ment and report the fi re and your location. Seal all cracks with wet tow els. Shut off fans and air conditioners. Signal at your window or balcony for help and wait to be rescued.

Crawl low in smoke. Fresh air will be at the fl oor. If you en coun ter smoke or fi re at lower levels, turn around and use another exit. Take your key so you can go back to your room if you can’t use your exits.

BE INFORMED... A hurricane is a tropical storm of clouds circulating in a counterclockwise direction with a wind speed in excess of 74 miles per hour. The wind speed of a hurricane determines its category. Some hurricanes spawn tornadoes. A tornado watch means a tornado is possible within a given watch area. When a tornado watch is issued, continue to listen to the news media for updates. On the other hand, if a tornado warning is issued, then a tornado has been sighted and you should follow media instructions for your im me di ate safety.

If a Hurricane Watch or Hurricane Warning is announced for the Outer Banks...

KEEP YOUR CAR TANK FILLED with gasoline in case evacuation becomes necessary.

ANTICIPATE HEAVY RAINS AND STRONG WINDS in advance of the hurricane and plan accordingly.

FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTION ISSUED BY DARE COUNTY If evacuation is recommended, then use the evac u a tion routes outlined by Dare County bulletins over WRSF radio. Information on shelters will be released primarily for those who MUST remain behind, such as law enforcement and medical personnel. When advised to evacuate, please evacuate.

DO DON'TPANIC. When necessary, evacuation orders will be issued in as much advance as possible, allowing you to leave safely.

SPREAD RUMORS or listen to unoffi cial information and treat it as legitimate instruction.

RELY ON INSTRUCTIONS OR NEWSCASTS BROADCAST OVER VIRGINIA RADIO AND TELEVISION STATIONS Usually, weath er information and fore casts are different for Tidewater, Virginia and the Outer Banks. Make sure your information source broad casts all offi cial bulletins from the National Weather Service and from the Dare County Government Offi cials.

ADOPT A “WAIT AND SEE” ATTITUDE If you delay after an evacuation has been ordered, then roads or bridges may become im pass able due to high winds, heavy rains, and fl ooding.

HURRICANE WATCH means a hurricane MAY THREATEN

the area within 24 to 36 hours.

HURRICANE WARNING means a hurricane IS EXPECTED TO

STRIKE the area within 24 hours OR LESS.

HOW TO SPOT A RIP CURRENTLook for the following signs: • Water in one area will appear calmer and cooler than the water around it• Water color will appear different than the water around it• Foam, objects, or debris move away from the shore.

RIP CURRENT MYTHSRip currents do not pull people under water, instead, they pull people away from the shore. Drowning occurs when a person caught in a rip current is unable to keep afl oat to swim to shore. This may be due to any combination of fear, panic, exhaustion, or inferior swimming skill.

BACKWASH A backwash current on a steeply sloping beach can pull you toward deeper water, but its power is swiftly checked by in com ing waves. If you are a strong swim mer, then swim straight to escape this current; if not, then wait and fl oat until the current stops, then swim in. If the current takes you out through incoming waves, then it is a rip current.

SWIMMING SAFETYSimple rules to follow for swimming at the beach.

SWIM NEAR A LIFEGUARD. Swimming in guarded areas reduces the risk of drowning.

LEARN TO SWIM. This is the best defense against drowning. Teach children how to swim at an early age.

NEVER SWIM ALONE. Have someone on shore to watch you.

SWIM SOBER. Alcohol and swimming do not mix.

DON’T USE A FLOAT WHERE YOU CAN’T SWIM. Non-swimmers should not use fl otation devices in areas too deep to stand. These fl oats can defl ate or be lost in the surf.

DON’T DIVE HEAD-FIRST. Always check for the depth and any obstructions before diving.

APPLY SUNSCREEN EARLY AND OFTEN. Sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes prior to exposure to the sun and have at least a SPF 15 rating.

LEASH YOUR BOARD. Surfboards and bodyboards should only be used with a leash. With a leash the user will not become separated from the fl otation device.

OBEY THE WARNING FLAGS, LIFEGUARDS, AND RULES OF THE BEACH.

CURRENT CURRENT

BREAK THE GRIP OF THE RIPSURVIVING A RIP CURRENT

• Do not panic.• Do not fi ght the current. • Swim out of the current in a direction following the shoreline. When out of the current, swim towards the shore. • If unable to swim out of the current, then fl oat or calmly tread water. • If you are unable to reach shore, then draw attention to yourself, by facing the shore, and waving your arms, and yelling for help. • If you see someone in trouble, get help from a lifeguard or call 911.
