The 39th annual Oil Heritage Festival will kick off Thursday and last until Sunday, July 23.

Although the festival itself is only four days long, executive director of the Venango Area Chamber of Commerce Susan Williams said there are events that occur throughout the week.

“(The festival) started with just a few days of competition events and grew into a week-long festival in just a few years,” Williams said. “It celebrates the area’s history and brings the community togeth-er.”

Prior to the festival, the Oil Heritage Festival Bike ‘n Brew hosted by Future Leaders and Entrepreneurs Exchange will occur at Justus Park on Seneca Street on Saturday and the annual raft race will start at 11 a.m. Sunday at Henry’s Bend.

The Bike ‘n Brew offers biking activi-ties for all ages from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and brewfest sessions from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets at the door are $35 for participants and $5 for designated drivers.

Thursday’s events include the Junior Olympics at Oil City High School, the children’s parade — which starts at 5:15 p.m. and runs from Free Methodist Church to the Central Avenue Plaza — and the crowning of the Oil Heritage Festival queen in Central Avenue Plaza.

The children’s pool party at the James A. Nelles Memorial Swimming Pool in Hasson Heights and the Youth Alternative’s Barrel Race along Oil Creek are among the events planned for Friday.

On Saturday, the Oil Heritage parade will kick off at 5 p.m. on Oil City’s South Side with the theme of “Transportation” this year.

“We’re a hub of interesting transporta-tion,” Williams said, adding the area has a long history with trains and automo-biles and a “phenomenal” bike trail.

There are 50 units in the parade as of Wednesday, but Williams said there are normally between 75 and 85 units by the time the parade starts.

Following the parade will be a Lawyers, Guns and Money concert at 7 p.m. and fireworks at 10 p.m. in Justus Park.

A baseball tournament at the junior league baseball fields and the artisan and fine crafts festival along Seneca Street will also highlight Friday and Saturday’s events.

The artisan and fine crafts festival will run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, July 21, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 22. About 40 vendors had signed up as of Wednesday, but Williams said they cham-

ber will continue to add more “until we run of room or patience.”

Sunday’s events include a disc golf tournament in Hasson Park and the car and motorcycle cruise along Seneca Street.

The car and motorcycle cruise lasts from noon to 4 p.m. and charges a $5 entry fee for participants. The first 100 participants will receive a dash plaque, T-shirt and goodie bag.

The Oil Heritage art shows and new-ly-founded photography show will begin on Wednesday and last through Sunday

in the National Transit Building, Annex and Graffiti Gallery. The shows will be open from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday and Sunday, noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Chamber of Commerce has been busy preparing for the festival, which occurs annually on the fourth weekend of July and brings thousands to the area, Williams said.

“We are very fortunate that many of the attractions are hosted by community members,” Williams said. “We’re thrilled when anyone from the community sup-

ports the festival through sponsorship and volunteers.”

More information about the festival can be made available by calling or visit-ing the chamber’s office or the festival’s headquarters — which opens on Wednesday at the former site of Lydia’s Stitches on Seneca Street in Oil City — or visiting festival’s website and Facebookpage online.

Oil City Arts Council and the Transit Fine Arts Gallery are announcing a return of an old tradition.

“When our great volunteer Marilyn Karns was the direc-tor of The Transit Fine Arts Gallery, she introduced a fea-ture artist concept. We are now returning to that concept,” said Alicia Eisenman, gallery con-sultant.

“We would like to introduce our first — in a long time — feature artist, Dick Dunlap,” Eisenman said.

A reception to honor Dunlap and his work will be held at the Transit Fine Arts Gallery from 6 to 8 p.m. today.

Dunlap was born and raised in Oil City.He attended Hasson Heights School,

and graduated from Oil City High School. After high school, Dunlap attended Gannon College of Arts and Sciences.

He then attended Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, which is now the Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine. He served three years in the United States Navy, obtaining the rank of lieutenant junior grade.

After being discharged, Dunlap returned to Oil City to open his medical prac-

tice. He practiced podiatry for over 41 years in Oil City.

Dunlap and his wife, Barbara, have been married for 61 years. They have three daughters, Kelly, Kim and Kristine.

Dunlap started taking photographs and designing jewelry about 20 years ago. He also works with other various mediums.

“His keen eye and attention to detail are what make his work outstanding,” Eisenman said.

The Oil City Arts Council continues its summer music series with pianist Dennis Geib in concert from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Pipeline Alley.

The venue is located next to the National Transit Building on Seneca Street in Oil City in the Victorian garden by Oil Creek. The concert is free and is wheel-chair accessible.

In Franklin, Dennis Geib started to play the piano at the age of 5. He was formally trained in classical music for 12 years. He lived in Texas for a long time where he performed at prestigious cultural institutions such as, the Morton Myerson Symphony Hall, The Weisfeld Performing Arts Center, and The Eisemann Center. After returning home he has concentrated in giving back to his community by playing at churches, helping to raise funds and teach-ing young talents often without charge.

He has been a regular performer at the Venango Museum in Oil City, in Foxburg for the Allegheny Riverstone Center for the Arts and other local venues. Geib has also played in many universities, radio stations and television channels across United States.

He performs original compositions, well-known classical pieces, show tunes and soft-pop standards. He is partial to the Romantic period of classical music. This is in part due to being taught by world renowned pianist Ozan Marsh at the Chautauqua Institute where he stud-ied in master classes for three years.

Geib’s teacher Marsh was a disciple of the icons Sergei Rachmaninoff and Vladimir Horowitz. His own composi-tions show strong traces of the influence of all three great pianists and composers. Geib can be found on youtube.com and heard in person at the First Baptist Church in Franklin where he is the prin-cipal pianist and organist.

The next Pipeline Alley performer is Mitch Littler.

The Oil City Pet Show will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Justus Park.

Registration, music and games start at 5 p.m. with the show starting at 6 p.m. Admission is free. It is sponsored by Venango County Humane Society and assisted by The DukeFest team.
