Welcome to this very special festival guide to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Channel Islands’ Liberation after five long years of German Occupation.

This guide is packed full of hundreds of events taking place across Guernsey, Jersey and the Bailiwick isles of Alderney, Sark and Herm, each of which have their own unique story to tell. Over five weeks, secret tunnels in castles will be opened up for the first time, fortifications and towers will be brought to life with guided tours and re-enactments will bring the past to the present day.

As German invasion of the British mainland became possible, invasion of the Channel Islands was deemed inevitable. By mid June 1940 the British Government made the decision not to defend the Channel Islands.

Islanders had just hours to decide whether to stay or leave with official evacuation boats sailing from 20 to 23 June. In Guernsey, school children, teachers and mothers with young children, were the first to be evacuated and in total 17,000 out of 42,000 left the Islands. In Jersey, the majority of Islanders chose to stay with 6,600 out of 50,000 choosing to go. Alderney recommended all Islanders evacuate, and nearly all did so, while the Dame of Sark, Sibyl Hathaway, encouraged everyone to stay.

On Fri 28 June the Islands experienced their first air raid, with both St Peter Port and St Helier harbours being attacked, killing 44 islanders. Actual Occupation began on Sun 30 June, when German flags were raised in Guernsey, followed in quick succession by Jersey and Alderney. On 2 July a small detachment travelled from Guernsey to Sark, which officially surrendered on 4 July.

From Occupation…

The Channel Islands were the only British Isles to be occupied during WW2 with Alderney bearing the heaviest scars.

The islands were heavily fortified with reinforced concrete bunkers as well as adapting existing fortifications. Access to the beaches was limited as they were heavily defended with barbed wire and mines. German rule was imposed and the time zone was changed from GMT to CET. Also Islanders were forced to drive on the right.

Over 4,000 Islanders who had been born in the UK, or who had served in the British forces were deported to camps in Germany. Over 500 more were sent to continental prisons or camps for acts of resistance or breaking German laws. In all, 29 never returned.

By the end of the Occupation, food supplies had dwindled and both Islanders and the occupying forces were starving. Although Victory in Europe (VE Day) was on 8 May, the German Commander Admiral Hoffmeier refused to surrender the Channel Islands until the early hours of 9 May 1945.

For most of its history, the language was passed on as a spoken tradition. The number of speakers has declined, especially since the Occupation, when evacuees returned speaking only English. However, some speakers who stayed on the Islands used the language to their advantage; they could speak it in front of the German forces and not be understood. It became an important, useful communication for many Islanders during this time.

Today liberation Day is a celebration of freedom, determination and community spirit – and thinking of those many island families whose lives were forever changed by the Occupation.

1945

On the morning of 9 May 1945 HMS Bulldog arrived in St Peter Port, Guernsey and the German forces surrendered unconditionally aboard the vessel at dawn. British forces landed shortly afterwards, greeted by crowds of joyous, but malnourished, Islanders.

At the same time HMS Beagle set sail to liberate Jersey. On arrival naval officers were escorted by the harbour master to his office where together they hoisted the Union Flag, before also raising it on the flagstaff of the Pomme D’Or Hotel.

Sark was liberated a day later, so now celebrates Liberation Day on 10 May. The Dame of Sark was left in command of 275 German Troops until 17 May, when they were transferred as prisoners of war to England. Alderney had a longer road to recovery. Although the German garrison finally surrendered on 16 May, Islanders could not return home until 15 December, which is now celebrated as Homecoming Day.

The main Liberation forces arrived on 12 May when a Royal Proclamation read out by Brigadier Alfred Snow in both Guernsey and Jersey vested the authority of Military government in him. This lasted until 25 August when new Lieutenant Governors in each Bailiwick were appointed.

The British Government had stockpiled food, clothing, pots and pans and household necessities to supply immediately to Islanders. This provided relief and helped restore order, but to minimise financial disruption the Reichsmark remained in circulation until the money could be exchanged for sterling.

At its peak, some 3,000 German troops and up to 4,000 forced labourers were on the Island. The latter were housed in four camps, Borkum, Norderney, Helgoland and Sylt. Between 1943 and 1944 Lager Sylt was run by the SS; the only concentration camp in the British Isles. Up to 400 prisoners, and possibly many more, are known to have died in Alderney during the Occupation. Thousands of others barely survived their extraordinary ordeal. It was not until 16 May 1945 that the German garrison finally surrendered, eight days after Berlin.

Alderney suffered massive wartime devastation of farmland, damage to town and harbour, loss and theft of personal property, and the rapid dismantling of the community itself. Unlike the rest of the Channel Islands, it was not until 15 December 1945 that Islanders started to return and picturesque Alderney had lost so much in its conversion to a military stronghold.

The Alderney evacuees’ story is largely unknown beyond the Channel Islands, but it had an enormous impact on nearly 2,000 members of the Island’s community. The wartime damage caused to much of its infrastructure, and the separation of the Islanders from each other and their homes, continues to resonate even today. The war possibly had more of an impact on this tiny community than on any other in the British Isles.

The evacuees had to leave their houses, pets, farm animals and most of their possessions behind, taking with them just one small suitcase each. Most believed they would only be away a matter of months, but they were dispersed all over the UK, and many never returned. The Island itself was converted into Festung Alderney, an impregnable fortress, one of the most heavily fortified sectors of the Atlantic Wall.

The Occupation of Alderney was total; virtually no Islanders remained. The Island lies in a strategic position just eight miles off France, and this made it the focus for a huge military construction programme. Hundreds of concrete buildings including bunkers, observation posts, flak batteries, anti-tank walls and gun and mortar emplacements were built, using thousands of tonnes of imported cement and steel reinforcement. Many of these survive today.

The Occupation of Alderney was total; virtually no Islanders remained.

Homecoming DaySince then, 15 December is now known as Homecoming Day, a day that commemorates the Islanders’ return, and the struggle of a generation forced to rebuild Alderney and its community. The Islanders’ indomitable spirit and their success in re-creating Alderney over the last 70 years are today a real cause for celebration.

GUERNSEY'S LIBERATION DAY The theme of the 70th Liberation Celebrations is “remember and celebrate with island pride” as Guernsey residents and visitors remember and ref lect on the solemnity of the dark years of Occupation and celebrate the feeling of joy that everyone experienced first-hand on 9 May 1945.

A full day of activities will take place and will include an outdoor Church Service and the Condor Liberation Cavalcade as two of the major special features of the day. The Cavalcade, which comprises decorated floats and military vehicles, will be the biggest cavalcade Liberation Day has seen over the years. A host of entertainment and activities will be staged on North Beach, Crown Pier, Albert Pier and the seafront in St Peter Port for all age groups. The annual LibRock concert will be the central focal point in the evening on North Beach along with a show-stopping firework display in the skies above St Peter Port.

JERSEY'S COMMEMORATION DAY Liberation Day 2015 will commence with a Freedom parade led by bands and military vehicles which will process from Liberation Square to People’s Park for a poignant reflection on the Occupation and the liberation of Jersey by British Troops on May 9th 1945.

There will be a sitting of the States of Jersey, marching bands, flag hoisting and a tea party for those islanders who lived through the Occupation, were deported, evacuated or on active service. Highlights will include a film montage of the Occupation and re-enactments of the Liberation.

Later on, enjoy a programme of music and entertainment, al fresco food, craft stalls bursting with locally made treats (and some old favourites from a by-gone era!) as street entertainers wind their way through the crowds. The day will culminate in a spectacular fire work display over St Aubin’s Bay.

To mark the 70th anniversary of our Liberation, the Islands will have a very special guest in 2015. Her Royal Highness, the Countess of Wessex, will be representing The Queen at the celebrations in Guernsey in the morning before travelling to Jersey for the afternoon.

The Islands have been governed as possessions of the Crown since the 13th century when Henry III officially surrendered his claim and title to the Duchy of Normandy.

The Islands were attacked several times and brief ly captured by the French during the Middle Ages, and were occupied by the Germans from 1940–1945.
