As I begin to formulate this musing, Porsche just secured a #1 and #2 over-all finish at LeMans. I’m standing in a garage at the paddock at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course listening to cheers and clap-ping erupt from my friends. There are many high fives in front of big smiles. Jim Burnett detaches his long-stemmed, oversized Porsche flag which normally adorns his trailer and enthusiastically walks the paddock, waving it Euro-pean style. The victory is made more special at having been to LeMans for the first time with Jim and a few other OVR members last year. The sights, sounds, smells and vibrations have returned as Porsche delivers this one-two punch. Porsche foretold this victory with their photobomb-ing of the Audi finish last year and it will certainly add some octane to our next on-track session in our track day toys which are mere mortals compared to the 919 Hybrid gods of LMP1.But now, as I write these words, I begin to wonder. Maybe I formulated this column yesterday as I watched Mike Val-entine drive his Panamera Turbo at warp speed around the track, dusting me off with a few apices that were so tight and on (over?) the curb they could well qualify as rallying. I could barely (secret code for “I couldn’t really”) keep up in my Cayman S. Or it might have been during a special invitation, courtesy of Porsche of the Village, down to the Kentucky Speedway for a PCNA-dealer event where I had the chance to drive at speed nearly everything Porsche of-fers, from a Panamera eHybrid to a Macan Turbo to a Car-rera GTS. I find it interesting that I listed the 911 last but that’s probably because it performed as expected; I knew it would be great. The other two surprised me on the track. Their technology elevates them from practical luxury ve-hicles to purposeful, sporty ones in a very meaningful way.Maybe I’m late to the game, but a heavy realization settled on my mind this month. Technology is very significantly changing the game for Porsche. Intellectually, I’ve under-stood this for a while but viscerally, I’ve now felt it in a few different ways. Being in a Macan Turbo at 140 mph on all season tires defies common sense, even logic. Yeah, it’s cool. Really, really cool. But it is definitely not a sports car experience. It’s more like a spaceship ride because without the spaceship technology it would just be a heavy destined-to-remain-earthbound vehicle with lots of torque and horsepower. I’ve decided I like not just sports cars but spaceships, too. I’ve decided that I’ll also probably buy one someday.Last night, I downloaded HD quality video and GPS data from my iPhone app and learned more about where I can shave a few tenths off of my lap times in what I now under-stand to be my under-technologied Cayman S. Whether

technology is advancing our vehicles or advancing our human knowledge and capability, I know one thing. It is here to stay and it is enabling things to be fun in new and interesting ways. So, count me in as a supporter of all this wonderful technology but can I also get the Speed Racer Mach 5 steering wheel with the power jumping jacks, ro-tary saws, all-terrain tire wraps, and the cockpit deflector? I want my technology to be fun, after all!You can leave the boxes for the periscope and homing robot options unchecked. My personal drone will suffice. I hope it can keep up with me and get some good 3D foot-age of me on a spirited drive with my Trixie in my thank-fully computerless 930. It blows flames and I think they’re cool… because they’re not LEDs.

Autumn ThunderDennis Okin · Vice-President, DE ChairThe Ohio Valley Region just completed its most successful High Performance Driver Education event in history. Snyder SenseJosh Snyder - Editor, Photo courtesy of Porsche.com from Le Mans 2015I miss rallies and tours. While there is no denying that I’ve be-come a complete track junkie over the past year and a half, rallies and tours are some of my favorite Porsche club events. I like to stand around looking at the beauty of a Porsche, but I love to get out and drive a Porsche. I love it even more when I can be entranced by the haunches of a Porsche slithering up the road in front of me and glance in the rearview mirror to see those unmistakable headlights beaming at me from behind.I’ll never forget one of my first Porsche club events which was a tour called “Buffalo Ridge” Cruise to Karts in May 2013 led by Chris Laux. I invited my brother-in-law along for the ride and we met for the start of the tour at the Low-es on Colerain Ave. near I-275. Now that I think back on it, the 20 or so Porsches at the event, including Boxsters, a couple of older 911s and at least two 996 GT3s, were probably the largest collection of Porsches I had seen in my life to that point. Needless to say, I was stoked! I listened carefully to the instructions during the drivers meeting and entrusted my brother-in-law with the directions for navigation. We couldn’t have been five miles into the tour before we were both having too much fun and figured we’d just follow the Porsche in front of us, a black 911 SC. Sure enough, a truck got between the tour group and the black 911 SC took a wrong turn with us happily following it. Behind us was a matte candy apple green wrapped Cayman, driven by Jerry Jackowski, who I met a few months earlier when we both showed up to a board meeting for the first time.

Once we realized our mistake a couple of miles later, we all three pulled over. Earl Corrothers, a tall redhead wear-ing a Gulf jacket, climbed out of the SC with a huge smile on his face. Before he even said a word, I realized how we got lost when the passenger door never opened. Helpful hint for those of you who haven’t driven a tour: a navigator is extremely valuable. I didn’t know what to expect, but Earl has this southern charm that instantly put me at ease. After quick introductions and a good laugh at our misfortune, we determined that I should lead us to the half-way meeting point at a nearby park.Armed with cell phone maps, we joined the rest of the group at the park and managed stay attached to the train for the rest of the day. Earl, Jerry and I formed a bond that day. Not only did we stick together the rest of the tour, but we also kept chatting when we got to Full Throttle for some indoor karting. The point is: I probably wouldn’t have become friends with Earl and Jerry in quite the same way if we hadn’t gotten lost on that tour together. I even invited Earl to be my navi-gator for the Spring Tour last year after I knew he sold his SC and was temporarily without a Porsche. While rallies and tours have been kind of quiet this year, I believe they’re in good hands now. As you’ll read in a couple of pages, Jeff Clark has stepped up to lead with the support of a few other members. Jeff, count me in as another member willing to help out! Also, don’t forget, Mark Simpson has a tour of West Virginia planned for you adventurous members in early October.

Why did you become a board member?I wanted to be more involved on a regular basis (rather than occasional events) because I genuinely like the people whom are members of the club. What was your first Porsche?1973 914-2.0 Zambezi GreenWhat is(are) your current Porsche(s)?Right now: 2014 Panamera Turbo, 2011 911 GT3 RS 4.0, 2005 Carrera GTWhat is your favorite Porsche of all time?918 Spyder or 962 race car — I can’t make up my mind. What is your most memorable OVR event and why?Probably my most memorable OVR event was the Putnam Park Club Race of July, 2006 when I first participated in my Carrera GT as the pace car. It was great fun circulating the track at speed with race cars of similar pace. It was so much fun that I even wrote a Bent Pylon article about it.If you could tell Porsche management one thing, what would it be?Keep making focused sports cars that one can enjoy on the track as well as the street!

My Porsche MomentJeff Clark - MemberDon’t encourage him. It’ll only make him do it more. I don’t know how many times I heard that as a kid, trying to be clever when I really wasn’t. I swore I wouldn’t make the same mistakes with my kids that my folks did, but to no avail. The sins of the past follow you. I committed to writing something for the Bent Pylon every month and I intend to follow through. You know what? I’ve gotten encouragement. Folks who I’m familiar with, who I didn’t think could pick me out of a police lineup, emailed or called and said keep going. Keep writing. I like what you said or the most wonderful, “I can relate to that.” The best thing I’ve done among the myriad of colossal life errors was join this club. My first meeting at Uno’s was quiet. I hoped I could fit in with this group of Porsche owners. I hoped it wasn’t going to be what many expect Porsche owners to be, elitist and perhaps snobby. It wasn’t by a long shot. Guys who were showing up with cars that cost as much as my first house were as approachable and outgoing as folks I’ve known my whole life. I’ve mentioned it before, but I went through a stomach churning divorce a few years ago. It left me financially wrecked, physically heavier, and emotionally spent. The woman who is now my wife agreed to leave her family, her job, and her country Canada, to come here and be my wife. I didn’t even have to bribe her!She knew my situation but encouraged me and pushed me. I healed, I grew and I’m better than I was financially, emotionally and physically, because one person thought more of me then I thought of myself and encouraged me. My business has prospered. Because of her I own the Porsche I have today and she’s encouraging me to buy more. Jackpot, HIT. Thank you. What I’ve found after a couple of years being involved with this club is this group is made up of driven, passionate people who care deeply about their cars and Porsche in general. Every person I’ve met is self-made. They worked hard for years, probably went hungry, at times couldn’t

make the rent or mortgage payment but were driven by their own need to achieve. If your journey was anything like mine, you dealt with countless hours at the office, missed family events or a kid’s birthday party, but I’ll take the bet in virtually every case there was a person that encouraged you. Thank them. Where’s this going? I’m glad you asked. I had the pleasure of seeing Magnus Walker today. We all know who this guy is. The British accent, the dreads down to his hips, the beard, the clothes that look like he’s slept in them for years, the unabashed love and passion for Porsche. He has amassed a collection of cars that rivals Jerry Sein-feld’s, has dined with Porsche royalty, and he’s on a first name basis with some of the best known names involving Porsche. Magnus is the first to admit he is not a highly ed-ucated man. He has street smarts, he doesn’t come from wealth, and he came to the US young with an idea that clearly blossomed. He got his first Porsche in his 20’s and thought he had arrived. He has a few things that he throws out regularly; “Porsche represents freedom,” “Dirt don’t slow you down,” “Get out and drive.” They’re his mantras. But there was one particular thing that struck me and really endeared him to me. At every opportunity he thanks his wife Karen for staying with him and supporting him and encouraging him and he genuinely gets choked up when he talks about her. Through some twist of fate or simply not paying attention I was elected the Rally/Tour Chairman at the last board meeting. I have no idea where to start. I know I’m following Tom Cole, who has done an outstanding job. Thank you Tom for setting the bar impossibly high. What happened next, within minutes of the laughter sub-siding at my predicament is typical for this Porsche club. Brent, Grant, Ed and Thomas all approached me shook my hand, offered thanks, help and mostly genuine encour-agement. Consider yourselves all hired. Thanks guys, I’ll do my best.

Thank You Gary Nichols

Editor's Note: Gary Nichols has been the Spring DE chair-man for the past eight years. At the end of the June event, he handed over the reins to Thomas Crihfield.Gary sent the following email to a group of OVR mem-bers thanking them for their help at the June DE. I think I speak for all those that have participated in a Spring DE over the past eight years when I say: Gary, thank you! Our DE events wouldn't be where they are today without your dedication to serving the club. All,It was nice to climb into the home base rack last night, re-lax, think about the great weekend, and get a good night’s rest. I was certainly worn out by 4:30 yesterday afternoon, and am sure all of you were as well. So, for the last time on my watch, it is my great pleasure to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for all you do to make these events the hallmark of DE’s. All of you bring your very special talents to bear on behalf of this club, spend long hours and days without pay so that our students and instructors get the best we can offer. As a team, there is none better. We were blessed with good weather, yesterday could have been a real mess, but for once mother nature gave us a break. There was a part of me not 100% ready to turn over the chairmanship, but the part that said it was time tipped the

scales, and I was so happy to see Thomas step up yes-terday and take charge down in the hot pits. He will do a fantastic job for the club, and I know all of you will give him and Kara Lyn the same support you gave me over the years. I also thank all of you for being so kind and friendly to my daughter Caitlin. I was not sure how much she would enjoy three full days of cars, but she said she had a great time, she has asked if she could go to Putnam with me next month, so I suppose that says it all. Actually, I think the part she likes the best is all the attention she gets from all of her adopted uncles, although she has shown me a side I never knew existed. She is talking cars, and really likes the Gt-3’s. Keep saving your money kid!My special thanks to Kathie and Ted Hunter too, the hur-dles she went through to get the windbreaker finalized and delivered for pickup most of you do not know about, but, as always, the job got done. And last to Lynne and Jim, who have been there all the way with me these past eight years, I could never say enough for all you have given the club and to me.So to all, I hope you get some well-deserved rest, and we shall see you soon. You folks are the best, the absolute best. Thanks,Gary

Around the ZoneMichael Soriano - Zone 4 Representative

Greetings PCA Zone 4 Members,PCA strongly encourages the regions to give back to their communities. I am proud to say that in Zone 4 many regions hold high profile events that raise a great deal of money for worthy causes. A number of these events are car shows that are appealing to members from any region and fun for the entire family. In June, CIR hosted CruZionsville benefit-ting the Alzheimer’s Association and Zone 4 sponsored the Red Brick Reunion in Oxford, OH, which supports the American Cancer Society. This month is ARPCA’s PVGP (Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix) in Schenley Park which assists the Autism Society of Pittsburgh and the Allegheny Valley School. Also this month is P2O (Porsches to Ohio) in Granville, which supports a number of Mid-Ohio region’s local charities. In October, Ohio Valley Region will host Rallye Porsche Mariemont benefitting local charities. In addition to all of the large car shows, there are other ways that Zone 4 regions can make significant contribu-tions. Many regions give back by collecting money and goods for local food banks and meal programs. South-east Michigan region supports the Jo Brighton Special Olympics program and is making a substantial difference. And Michiana region is one of the sponsors of School Supply Give Away of Gary that assists over 1300 students annually.Along with fundraising, PCA members also donate their time and effort in order to help make a difference in the community. Nationally, PCA has partnered with Tire Rack Street Survival, a program that teaches car control skills to teens to provide them with the tools to become safer and smarter drivers. I have always been a strong advocate of the Tire Rack Street Survival program and have been pro-moting it at the Presidents’ Meetings. I am very pleased to see a positive response from the regions over the past few years. The initiative has been quite successful as this year our Zone is scheduled to hold 5 Street Survival Schools, the most within PCA.People that take the time to give of themselves and volun-teer for these worthy causes are just a few more ways that I find the PCA motto to be true. It’s Not Just the Cars, It’s the People.Be sure to check your local region’s website and newslet-ter, as well as the Zone 4 website http://zone4.pca.org for the latest details on the many events close to you that are being planned. Also, consider attending other regions’ events, such as:

• Ohio Valley and Central Indiana Regions’ Club Race and DE at Putnam Park is July 10-12• On July 11, join Michiana Region members at the Duet-sche Marques Car Show at the Gilmore Car Museum • Southeast Michigan Region’s Progressive Dinner is July 11• July 14 is Motor-Stadt Region’s People, Porsches, and Pizza at Spagnuolo’s in Okemos• Attend the PVGP in Schenley Park with Allegheny Re-gion July 18-19 • July 19 is Northern Ohio Region’s Autocross at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland• July 21 is Rally Sport Region’s DE at Waterford Hills• Autobahn Night at the Concours d’Elegance of America –St. John’s is July 24• Mid-Ohio Region’s P2O “Casual Car Show” in Granville, OH is July 24-26• On August 1, Join Western Michigan Region at the Gilm-ore Car Museum for the Red Barn Spectacular • Maumee Valley Region’s DE at Grattan Raceway is August 1-2 I look forward to having the opportunity of meeting each and every one of you as I visit each region throughout the year.
