Climate change resulting rom CO2 and other greenhouse gas emisposes a huge threat to human welare. To contain that threat, theworld needs to cut emissions by about 50% by 2050, and to startcutting emissions now. A global agreement to take action is vital. Bglobal agreement will not be possible unless the countries o the rideveloped world provide leadership A air global deal will requirUK to cut emissions by at least 80% below 1990 levels by 2050.

    Structural Design and Analysis

Atkins oshore structural engineering capability dates back tothe 1970s and we have been at the oreront o the disciplineever since. Much o our capability originated in the Oil and Gassector, and we are still heavily involved in this area. However,we have successully transerred many o our skills onto anumber o oshore Renewables projects.

Atkins undertakes all aspects o structural analysis, ranging romstrength and atigue assessment to extreme loading studies. Theteam has an extensive knowledge o wind turbine technology, havingundertaken independent design audits o 20 wind turbines or majordevelopers. We have also undertaken structural design and analysiscommissions or a number o wave and tidal energy converters, utilising our world leading expertise in wave loading.

Atkins has been commissioned by McNultys (Fabrication Contractor)to carry out the detailed design o the topsides or the GalloperWind Farm Oshore Substation Platorm. This encompasses multipledisciplines such as Structural, Utilities, Electrical, Architectural, SaetyEngineering, Mechanical, Piping Design and Telecomms. The completetopsides are expected to be in the order o 1600 tonnes.

One high voltage oshore substation platorm (OSP) will be used tocollect and transorm the energy generated by the Galloper WindFarm rom 33 kV to 132 kV or transmission to shore. Three phase132-kV high-voltage subsea cables will transport the power to the gridconnection point, which will be located near Sizewell in Suolk.

The OSP will be designed as a normally unmanned installation. Theplatorm acts as a central hub or the Galloper Wind Farm controlsystem and contains acilities to allow personnel to standby and

monitor the Wind Farm. Although the OSP is not required to unctionas accommodation, it is required to provide temporary accommodationin the event o stranding o the operations team.

    Marine Environmental Assessment

Securing development consent is a key milestone in theconstruction programme or inrastructure projects and carriesthe potential or substantial programme risks. These risksare urther exacerbated by the number o consents currentlyrequired and by the number o consent granting bodiesinvolved.

As such, a planning led approach is recommended. Atkins employsexpert chartered planners with signicant lead consultant experiencein the eld o inrastructure development who work with engineersand programmers to secure consents as part o the delivery team.

Atkins is the leading integrated planning and environmentalconsultancy in the UK, recognised through winning the BestConsultancy award or our consecutive years at the prestigious Edie.net awards. In addition to providing a ull suite o Environmental

Impact Assessment services, we have a proven track record in consentsmanagement or complex inrastructure projects and as such, are wellplaced to support projects through the planning process.

The evidence shows that ignoring climate changewill eventually damage economic growth. Ouractions over the coming ew decades couldcreate risks o major disruption to economic

and social activity, later in this century and in thenext, on a scale similar to those associated withthe great wars and the economic depression othe rst hal o the 20th century. And it will bedicult or impossible to reverse these changes.Tackling climate change is the pro-growthstrategy or the longer term, and it can be donein a way that does not cap the aspirations orgrowth o rich or poor countries. The earliereective action is taken, the less costly it will be.
