Dave Wall Race-Big Hit!

The Dave Wall Memorial Race was a great success for PMYC. We had 25 entries and people just had a great time. The entire Marina is talking about the success of this event and PMYC’s new expanded racing program. I am so proud of the team that ran this

event. You all did a great job.

The Dave Wall Memorial Race perpetual trophy was donated to the club by Roy Disney about 30 years ago and it has been in our trophy case ever since. This was the first run-ning of that race and few know that this was really Tony Milazzo’s dream. He has been trying to get this race off for the last two years and his work made mine much easier. It’s rare for any new event to get much notice but we got 25 entries for the inaugural Dave Wall Memorial Race. That is about the size of many well established races and one of

our best attended races in recent memory.

It was an important event for me as this was my first racing event for the club. I set the bar high and achieved success. This is a great follow up to the successful gold fish races we did with the club in January. We are hoping more of you will be impressed with what your Sail Committee is doing and

want to be part of our team.

The picture to the left is Kahn Griffith, PMYC’s sailor of the year for 2010. He was the first PMYC member to finish the race, he was also the only PMYC

boat to enter. It’s a good beginning for the club.

Our racing program is unique in the Marina. We are the only club that caters to the cruising sailor. We want the members of our club that own cruising boats to learn to race their boat instead of just paying slip fees. What do you do with a sailboat if you don’t race it? Go to the island four or five times a year? Sail to Santa Monica and back? That is boring and a waste of good slip fees. Our board of directors and flag officers are the driving force behind this new racing program. This is just one of the things they are doing to offer more value to

your membership.

The Dave Wall Memorial Race perpetual trophy can only be won by racers with cruising boats. It’s designed for you

and the big hot racing boats can’t even qualify for it.

If you would like to be considered for a Sail Committee chair please contact me. You can also find our new racing

website link on pacificmarinersyachtclub.org or directly by going to www.mikegucci.com/pmyc. Check it out.

A very grateful thank you to all who attended the Church Mouse Fundraiser on June 10. Over 50 people dined on a scrumptious Italian dinner hosted by Candy Blumenthal, Helene & Bob Smith & Tina Michel. Many thanks to Alex & Megan who pitched in and sold Church Mouse T-shirts. Over $1000 was raised and will be donated to various youth groups on Catalina Island.

Warmest Regards,

Carol & Bob Butte

The PMYC Desert Dwellers held their monthly party at the home of Bob & Joanie McFarland in Las Vegas last week. Fun was had by one and all except in the casino's. Even then it wasn't too bad. Bill, Buffy, Fran & Joanie went "zip-lining" down town, all lived.

It was the dark of night in Bocas del Toro, Panama. The parakeets were terrified. The humans were befuddled. Why

were their little birds suddenly fluttering madly about in their cage in the middle of the night?

It happened again and again. Mary would hear the commotion and ask Willy to investigate. He’d turn on a light in their

cabin and climb up to the wheelhouse, but could find nothing out of place. Certainly the parakeets were staring at him

with considerable intensity. But, he didn’t know how to interpret this. Unlike Timmy, who could translate Lassie’s barks

into concise emergency broadcasts, Willy didn’t realize that the birds were trying to convey this message. ―There is a

horrible three-foot snake hiding above the SSB radio, and it has been trying to slip through the bars of our cage and

convert us into dinner.‖ Or, stated another way—―HELP!‖

After a few nights of this, Mary was walking from the saloon into the wheelhouse when she noticed something unusu-

al—not your usual unusual, but REALLY unusual. There was a tubular, shimmering, gossamer object dangling from

the SSB. She froze and whispered to herself, ―Please, oh please, let that not be a snakeskin.‖ But when she called for

Willy to come have a look he confirmed her worst fears. ―I’m afraid so, love,‖ he said, shining a flashlight above the

radio, ―and its former occupant is still on the premises.‖ They agreed to wait until daylight to dispatch their stowaway.

The next morning Mary and Willy sought help on the local cruisers’ net. Being from Brooklyn, they were more than a

little herpetologically challenged; the only snakes where they came from are the ones on Wall Street. Identifying it

was the first concern. Panama, for all of its delights, does host some very dangerous vipers.

There was one snake expert in the fleet, but he was anchored several miles away. Someone suggested taking a digi-

tal photo of the intruder and emailing it to him—the coconut telegraph has now morphed into the Cyber Telegraph.

The tactic worked, and Mary and Willy were reassured that it was a relatively harmless common boa constrictor.

Next the couple initiated Operation wsense to fetch a local Indian who did odd jobs, like gardening around the Red

Frog Marina. He came prepared with the latest high-tech equipment—a bucket and a stick. Unfortunately, he found

his efforts somewhat hampered by the dozen sailors crammed into the wheelhouse with their cameras. The Red Frog

Marina is a new one, and nobody wanted to miss its very first reptile removal.

When the snake finally started to emerge under the ―influence‖ of the stick, it took one look at the camera-brandishing

crowd and retreated. It was probably thinking, ―Ah, for the good old days when it was just me, the birds and the guy

who kept turning the lights on.‖

It then fooled everyone by slithering off in an unexpected direction. This alarmed the spectators, who scampered to

the far side of the cabin, prompting visions of capsizing refugee boats as the mass of moveable ballast slid off to star-

board.

Eventually the stick man and a bucket man were able to coordinate their efforts, and the snake was paraded out into

the dock so everyone could get a photo. Unfortunately, squeezed into the bottom of the bucket it looked more like an

elephant turd than anything else—a large, brown, lumpy mass. It was then transferred into a sizable cooler where the

crowd of photographers could do it justice.

Later that afternoon the snake was released into the wild. It is probably safe to assume that this particular boa con-

strictor has removed ―dining on parakeet aboard a large trawler‖ from its personal bucket list.
