Sapa Building Systemoffers thermal insulationand shading solutions whichkeep offices cool in summerminimising the need forair conditioning, whilst

enabling energy savings inwinter by reducing theneed for heating.

    Sustainable development

    and energy savings

Sapa Building Systems product range includes so-

lutions or both passive and active carbon emission

reduction. Elegance SC (Solar Control) combines a

reduced transmission o radiation with a lower solar

gain inside the building, reducing cooling needs and

resulting in a more carbon eicient building. Double

skin aades can also contribute signiicantly to this

    goal by providing natural ventilation.

Sapa and its partners have developed glass panels

with integrated photovoltaic cells (BIPV) which can

be integrated to the aade and connected to the

electricity grid. It is a durable, sustainable and cost-

eicient energy option, and oers the opportunity to

introduce aesthetic variations to the aade.

    Safety

Personal saety may require the restriction and

monitoring o access to the oice premises. Sapa

Building System oers an Access Monitoring System

that allows or example, access permission with the

use o a card, a ingerprint or both. Emergency exits

are itted with panic bars. Windows are itted with

saety hardware to guard against accidental alls and

impact with open or moving panes.

    Security

The disruption and cost associated with poor security

is a major issue or building operators and users.

Sapa Building Systems windows and doors oer

the irst line o deence. We appreciate that die-

rent areas o each site will need diering levels o

protection. Our ully suited systems oer complete

City: Paris Nord Est - France

    Les Rives de lOurcq

    Paris Nord Est, France

This building is part o a European urban planning

project that centres around the Stade de France. The

specialist contractor who was to supply the aade o

the building made a request to Sapa Building System

or expert advice concerning the aade ramework

and the development o a die or the extrusion o

    aluminium sections.

A powerul element in Pantins identity, the Ourcq

Canal is one o the main axes or the reinvention o

the town. The reconquering o its banks, long devoted

to industrial activity, is already underw ay.

Sapa Building System oered the beneit o all

its expertise in order to ensure that the range o

products speciically developed or this project,

perectly suit the dynamic and expressive design

intentions or this development and ully meet all

acoustic, thermal, unctional and saety perormance

standards. The slenderness o the sections oer

maximised use o natural daylight and reduced

bulk to the building while investing it with a highly

    Hyundai

    Noovice, Czech Republic

For the new administrative building on the production

site o South Korean car manuacturer Hyundai in

the Czech Noovice village, the architect designed

a stylishly restrained curtain wall. To obtain an

even polished surace, special cover caps had to

be designed and produced to conceal any visible

screw heads. Through the realisation o this

prestigious project Sapa Building System proved its

ability to meet special aesthetic demands within the

Project: Tissot HeadquartersCity: Le Locle - Switzerland

    Fabricator/Installer: Progin SA Metal

    Tissot Headquarters

    Le Locle, Switzerland

Founded in 1853 at Le Locle, the birthplace o

Swiss watchmaking, Tissot has established itsel

as a unique and very successul brand renowned

or the quality and innovative nature o its products.

For over 150 years Tissot has managed to combine

incomparable style and elegance with cutting edge

    technology in watchmaking.

Throughout the companys history the headquarter

buildings in Le Locle, Switzerland, have undergone

many changes, the latest being the installation o a

curtain wall by Sapa Building System and its partner

    Progin SA Metal.

To underline the companys reputation as a

technological innovator the architect decided to use

a special triple glazed version o Sapas Elegance

52 ECO system. He designed a structurally clamped

aluminium curtain walling in which the glass is

retained without the use o pressure plates or

cover caps. This solution is a particularly attract ive

alternative or the traditional structural glazed

systems as it creates a smooth surace aspect.

In line with Tissots ocus on quality and innovation

the new building has been equipped with an

advanced building management system (BMS) that

controls and operates the automated windows in the

aade in accordance with the HVAC requirements.

    Scientic Park

    Leuven, Belgium

This 13 hectares Science Park is located between

a valuable green area, used or drinking water

extraction, and a busy road connecting Brussels and

Leuven. In 2000 the University o Leuven launched

a competition or the development and urbanisation

o the site, which links up with its Sciences Campus.

Poponcini & Lootens, architects, came with the

    idea o developing a cluster o buildings in a

predominantly green setting traversed by oot and

bicycle paths. Each sub-cluster would consist o a

number o dierent buildings centred around a yard.

Works started in 2004 on the irst sub-cluster which

was destined or the biochemistry and ICT labs.

The architects speciied large turn and tilt windows

with aluminium rames. Aluminium being the most

suitable material due to its combination o lighter

    weight, reliability, strength, maintenance-riendliness

and durability. Sapa Building Systems Elegance 52

aade system and Elegance 65 and 75 pivoting

window systems proved to be the best solutions or

    this particular project.

Right rom the preliminary design stage Sapa

Building Systems project team supplied technical

support. Because o the unusual size o the windows

(1.10 metres wide and 3 metres high) it proved

necessary to produce a number o samples or

testing. Ater 10,000 cycles o opening and closinghad been carried out with good result the windows

were successully subjected to 15,000 more testing

    Environmental materials which greatly contribute

to its outstanding thermal perormance. Thanks to

its photovoltaic integrated aade, its geothermal

heating system and its high energy eiciency by

design, the Solaris Project rightly won the Eco-

    Building Award 2009.

Sapas Elegance 52 system proved to be the best

solution to create the buildings subtly acetedaade. In addition, the systems excellent thermal

insulation qualities made it the obvious choice or

the construction o a passive building. Since the

design required large window panes with integrated

photovoltaic cells, the architects decided on the use

over the passive aade is that the active aade is

better suited to a temperate climate, ensures high

eiciency, and is also easier to maintain.

The renovation o this building is a ine example

o the strengths o the Sapa Groups vertical

integration. The close collaboration between the

architectural irm, Seco (the designer) and Sapa

Building System resulted in a solution in which

the entire construction o the old sandwich panels

was replaced by an extruded proile 350 mm wide.

This one-time extrusion was possible thanks to the

technical possibilities o Sapa Building Proiles

extrusion presses. Subsequently, the proiles were

thermally insulated. The windows were completely

pre-assembled so that they could be installed very

quickly and eiciently at the work site.

O course, the systems perormance was irst tested

at Sapa Building Systems test acility. The speciic

saety aspects or securing the cleaning installation

    were tested as well.

The building consists o two parts: an upper part,

which expands with its 12-storey tall inclined aades

that separate into two semicircles; and a lower part,

whose shape resembles a landscape element more

than a building and serves as the oundation or the

upper part. The two parts together leave a ootprint

on the surace that can be compared to a Japanese

    calligraphic sign.

With all the services necessary to a place o

work, the Service Centre unctions as a pleasant

meeting place. It is a convenient oasis or hurrying

businesspeople and their employees. For this reason,

the two parts o the building orm two adjacent,

intimate outdoor spaces: an entrance square, which

opens towards the morning sun at the intersection o

Teknikringen and Dataringen Streets; and a garden

area, acing the aternoon sun in a sheltered location.

Between these two spaces is the entrance hall,

which together with the north entrance rom the

parking lot orms a hub in the building. Through the

entrance halls glazed roo, one can see the upper

parts o the building rising towards the sky.

The dark zinc sheet in the inclined gable aades

orms an outer rame or the otherwise transparent

building. The almost pitch-black colour o the zinc

contrasts with the light eggshell-coloured glass -

creating with graphic clarity a sharp silhouette in

    the lat surrounding landscape.

o the concrete structures had deteriorated due

to corrosion and the original glazing needed to be

removed to bring up ventilation to current standards.

The architect proposed to sheath the building in

a glass curtain wall, which immediately solved the

problem with the reinorced concrete and c reated

a uniorm and contemporary outward appearance.

Logically he decided to install a high quality

aluminium and glass curtain walling between the

load-bearing pillars that were integrated into the

original aade. To reduce energy use and improve
