“I thought Lewerke played very well at the beginning of the game,” Dantonio said. “We pulled him out after a quarter and a half or so, but he was crisp. He was on target. He played very effectively.”

Stewart had four catches for 69 yards, including two touchdowns. In ad-dition to his game winner, he also hauled in a 30-yard TD from Lewerke at the end of the first half. Sophomore Cam Chambers led all receivers with five receptions for 50 yards.

On the ground, sophomore Alante Thomas led all rushers with nine carries for 73 yards, including a late 4-yard touchdown that cut the defense’s lead to 24-23 late in the fourth quarter. Prior to his TD run, Thomas had a game-long 53-yard scamper that set up his score. On the ensuing two-point conversion, sophomore running back Connor Hey-

ward passed the ball to Lombardi in the end zone as the offense took a 25-24 lead.

Heyward had 12 carries for 48 yards, including his own 6-yard TD in the second quarter for the offense’s first points of the game.

Defensively, senior safety Khari Willis and senior linebacker Grayson Miller each had seven tackles, while senior safety Matt Morrissey and junior linebacker Brandon Randle had five stops apiece. Junior defen-sive tackle Mike Panasiuk recorded four tackles, including a sack.

Sophomore cornerback Josiah Scott picked off a Day pass in the third quarter that put the defense up, 21-14.

“There’s very good carryover from last season -- there’s a lot of con-fidence,” said Dantonio, as the team returns 19 of 22 position starters. “That’s always fun to coach people like that.”

Earlier in the day, more than 700 kids attended this year’s football youth clinic, held inside the Duffy Daugherty Football Building.

“They come in with so much energy,” said Stewart at the clinic. “They’re so happy to be here. It’s a blessing to be able to affect someone so young. They’re just coming out here to have fun and be excited. That’s the best feeling for me, just seeing those smiles on their faces.”

MSU Adds to Coaching Staff

Don Treadwell: Treadwell served as Michigan State’s offensive coordinator for four seasons from 2007-10 under head coach Mark Dantonio and returned to the Spartan coaching staff in January 2018. Treadwell will assist coaching defensive backs and special teams while also helping as an offensive consultant. In addition, Treadwell will serve as freshmen head coach, a new title created to support first-year players in their growth and development both on and off the field. Treadwell, who returns for his third stint with the Spartans after serving as wide receivers coach from 2000-02 and offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach from 2007-10, has more than 30 years of experience coaching at the collegiate level. His coaching resume includes nine bowl appearances, four Division I-AA playoff appearances and a national championship. He has coached on the same staff with Dantonio on four previous occasions (Youngstown State, 1986-90; Cincinnati, 2004-06; Michigan State, 2000, 2007-10).

Paul Haynes: Haynes, who has more than 20 years of collegiate coaching experience, was named sec-ondary coach at Michigan State on Jan. 19, 2018. He most recently spent five seasons (2013-17) as the head coach at Kent State. Haynes returns for his second stint with the Spartans, serving as defensive backs coach from 2003-04. As the head coach at Kent State, Haynes coached 21 players who earned Mid-American All-Conference accolades, with at least three players earning all-league plaudits in all five seasons, including four in both 2017 and 2016, five in 2013, three in 2014 and five in 2013. In the classroom, 55 Kent State players earned spots on the Academic All-MAC Team in Haynes’ five years. Prior to his time at Kent State, Haynes was the defensive coordinator at Arkansas in 2012, also serv-ing as the Razorbacks’ secondary coach. Before Arkansas, Haynes was at Ohio State from 2005-2011,

holding the position of co-defensive coordinator/secondary coach in 2011 after being the secondary coach from 2005-10. Haynes’ first stint at Michigan State was during the 2003 and 2004 seasons, serving as secondary coach.

Chuck Bullough: Former Spartan and NFL linebacker Chuck Bullough was named the program’s defensive ends coach on Feb. 1, 2018. A 22-year coaching veteran, Bullough has experience in both the NFL and college, including five years as a defensive coordinator. He has mentored multiple Pro Bowlers, All-Americans and NFL players in addition to coaching in six bowl games. As a player, Bullough spent five seasons in the NFL and was one of the most productive Spartans to ever wear the Green and White; a four-year letterwinner at Michigan State from 1988-91, he still holds MSU’s single-season tackles record with 175 in 1991. Bullough has extensive coaching experience at both the professional and collegiate levels. He spent seven years in the NFL with both the Chicago Bears (1999-2003) and Cleveland Browns (2011-12) and has coached 14 seasons in college, including stops at Lake Forest College (2004), Western Michigan (2005), UCLA (2006-10), Syracuse (2013-15) and Eastern Michi-gan (2016-17). Bullough spent the past two seasons (2016-17) coaching the defensive line at Eastern Michigan. Over-all, the Eagles finished in the FBS top 40 in total defense during Bullough’s two seasons on staff (No. 35 in 2016, No. 39 in 2017), and ranked second in the MAC in total defense in 2017 (363.9 ypg).

Sheldon White: The Spartans hired former Detroit Lions Vice President of Pro Personnel Sheldon White as a program consultant. White played defensive back for six NFL seasons with the New York Giants (1988-89), Detroit Lions (1990-1992) and Cincinnati Bengals (1993). Following retire-ment from his playing career, White returned to the Lions in 1997 as a scout for three seasons before becoming Director of Pro Personnel in 2000. In 2004, White completed the NFL’s career develop-ment program at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business, and was promoted to Vice President of Pro Personnel with Detroit in 2009. Prior to joining the Lions, White was the wide receivers coach at his alma mater, Miami-Ohio, from 1994-1996. A four-year starter at cornerback for the RedHawks from
