To&JoséMoura-Soares(ResponsibleCouple,InternationalLeadingTeam)

“LetusSeekTogether!”

ItiswithgreatjoyandmuchenthusiasmthattheTeamsofOurLadywelcomeand respond with hope and boldness to the call of Father Angelo Paleri,PostulatoroftheCauseofourFounder,toorganisethesecondinternationalColloquiumonFatherCaffarel.Thus,theTeamsofOurLadywillbeunitedandassociatedwiththeCauseforhisCanonisation.

The impetus of the Cause of the Canonisation led the Association of TheFriendsofFatherCaffareltogetherwiththeTeamsofOurLadyMovementtochoose thedateof the70thanniversaryof theCharter topay tribute to itsFounderwiththeorganisationofthissecondColloquiumthatwilltakeplacein the Collège des Bernardins in Paris. Thirty-five people from differentcultureswillgive,inadynamicandlivelymanner,theirtestimonialastohowtheFounder,amanwiththethinkingofGod,influencedthemandledthemtodiscoverthewayinwhichtheSacramentofMarriageisapathtoholiness.

Ontheonehand,movedthereforebytheSpirit,sourceofstrengthforustowork so that the Church recognises the relevance and universality of histhinking,wedeeplydesirethatitwillbeanimportantmomentandthatitwillcontribute in a decisive fashion to the Cause for Canonisation of FatherCaffarel.

Ontheotherhand,facedwithcurrentchallenges,theCelebrationofthe70thanniversary of the Charter shows us how Father Caffarel, with the

promulgationoftheCharterin1947,guaranteedanactive,fruitfulandtopicalpresenceforourMovement.

AwareofthefactthatGod’sgazeupheldFatherCaffarelthroughouthiswholelife,thismomentwillbecelebratedwithgreatemotionbyallparticipants;werecognise ourselves to be the heirs of a remarkable legacy of Christiancommitmentandtestimony. TheTeamsofOurLadyrecognisewithspecialgratitudetheseedsofholinessthattheLordplantedthroughouthishistorythroughtheintermediaryofhisservantHenriCaffarel.

Thiscelebrationoffersus,therefore,theoccasiontocontinuetoseektogetherhow to be an evangelising presence in the world, able to respond to thechallengesofalleras,bydiscerningtheLightofGodandbyreflectinguponthepathstheMovementiscalledtotravel.

Thegrandeurandscaleof thesechallengesdemand thecooperationofall.Awareofthisfact,theTeamsofOurLadywishtomoveforwardinunityandfidelity to their charism, in order to face the crisis that the family is goingthrough,aswellasthefragilityofthelinksthattodaynourishmarriage.

Forthat,together,thankstothisjourneyandinapropheticspirit,todaymorethanever,wewishtomaintainalivewithinustheannouncementmadeandtaughtbyFatherCaffarelandthatitmayleadustoceaselesslyproclaim,“Letusseektogether.”

AColloquiumintheserviceoftheCauseofCanonisationofFatherCaffarel,theaimofwhichistheshowtheinfluenceofthethinkingandintuitionsofFatherCaffarelonthetheologyandspiritualityofmarriageandonprayer.An international Colloquium. Simultaneous translation in four languages (English,French, Portuguese, Spanish)with a real-time streaming thatwill enable the greatestnumberofTeammembersandothers,throughouttheworldtoparticipateintheeventandfollowtheColloquiumliveviathewebsiteofTheFriendsofFatherCaffarel.A scientific Colloquium. (…) Francis possessed that power—asignofholiness—toawakenthedesireforperfectioninthosewhomethimorheardhimpreach.Buttheroadislongthatleadsfromdesiretoreality.Andtheriskisgreatto get lost or to become discouraged.Therefore, to those that asked him,Francis offered himself as a guide. Thislead to a vast correspondence that wepossessandfromwhichareextractedtheletterstosevenmarriedwomenthatyouhavejustread. TheMonsieurfromGeneva,(Francisde Sales) that clever psychologist, knewvery well that these women immersed in the bother of family life, socialresponsibilitiesandworldlyrelationships,didnothavethetimetogettogripswithcomplicateddoctrines,nomorethanoverloadingtheirexistenceswith

multiplereligiousexercises.Theyneededsimpleorientations.Ideally,theseorientationswouldbereducedtoasinglekey idea. ButcantheGospelbeboileddowntoasuchakeyidea?Yes,StFrancisthought. This pole of Salesian spirituality, this centre towards which all hismeridiansconverge,isthewillofGod.Seekingitout,adheringtoitwithallourstrength,accomplishingit,thismakesupthewholeofChristianlife.WhenonereadsStFranciswiththisinmind,everythingmakessense. “WeneedtolookatwhatGodwantsand,recognisingit,wemusttryanddoitgaily,oratleastbravely;andnotonlythat,butwemustlovethiswillofGodandtheobligationthatensuesinus,evenifthismeansmindingswineforour whole life and doing themost abject things in the world; because nomatterwhatsituationGodputsusin,itoughttobeawholeforus.”Sloborgentleman, itdoesn’tmatter! It isnotthehumanvalueofouroccupationsthatgivesthemChristianvalue,itisthattheycoincidewithGod’swill. FrancisbelievedthatitisveryimportanttobeincompleteagreementastowhatGod’swillis.Heknewthatthetemptationtoescapethreatenedhiscorrespondentsandthesewomenrisked,underthepretextofsanctification,to escape from the demands, often fastidious, of their station in life.Therefore,hespentmuchtimemakingthemunderstandthatifGod’swillisfirstlybroughttoourattentionthroughthegeneralcommandments,itisalsothroughtheparticularcommandmentsthatarethedemandsofmarriedandfamilylife,worldlyandsocialobligations. Thus,heinvitesMadameBrulart,thatintrepidandspiritedwomanwhofeltillateaseintherutofdailylife,tobe“tenderlyamorous”ofherstate.“Thereisnovocation,”heremindsher,“thatdoesnothaveitstroubles,bitternessandrevulsions.”“Ifshedoesnotaccomplishhermaritaldutieswithherhusbandorifshedoesnottakecareofherchildren,sheisworsethanunfaithful…”(…) Circumstances, and more especially ordeals are also messengers ofdivinewill. Smallorgreatsufferingpossessesasanctifyingpowerforthosewho receive them from the hand of God. “Believe me, true virtue is notnourished in exterior rest, nomore than good fish are to be found in thestagnantwatersofmarshes.”AnauthoritarianfatherandahusbandwhoareannoyedbecauseMadameBrulart takes communion regularly, a particularpregnancythatbothersher,themultitudeofthingsthattakeupsomuchofMadamedelaFléchère’stime,allthatiswantedorallowedbyGodfortheirgood. “The less we live according to our taste, themore the devotion issound.” Afewyears later,Pascalwastowriteinhisvigorousstyle,“IfGod

givesusmastersbyhisownhand,ohhownecessaryforustoobeythemwithagoodheart!Necessityandeventsarewhat theymustbe”: it is thesamedoctrine.Inaword,themeansbywhichGodattachesustohimselfaremuchmorepreferabletoourownmeans.“Inasmuchasyouwillbestoppedfromdoingthegoodyoudesire,doevenmoreardentlythegoodthatyoudonotdesire.” ThisimpetusthatpushesChristianstoseek,loveandpracticeGod’swillhasaname.Well-wornlikeacointhathasbeenincirculationforawhile,thisnameovertimehaslostitsmeaningforus,whileforFrancisitcontainedgreatmeaning:devotion.Devotioninhiseyeswasnotjustanyvirtueamongsttheothers,butwasasynthesis-virtuewherealltheothersmetupandmerged,“Thevirtueofdevotionisnothingotherthanageneral inclinationandpromptnessof thespirit todowhatitknowstobeagreeabletoGod.ThosewhoaresimplygoodpeoplefollowinGod’spath;butourdevoutandpiouspeoplerun,andwhenaretheyareverydevouttheyfly.” In order to be perfect, devotion must acquirenumerousqualities. Beyondpromptnesswhich isaconstituentelement, itoughttobejoyfulorrather,itoughtfirstlybe“relaxed.”NooneinsistedmoreonthisthanFrancis.“Gosimply,smoothly,franklyandwithachild’snaivety.”Neverforcing,alwayswithflexibility.OurGodmustbeserved“withgoodfaithandwithoutartifice,”“inasimplemanner,”with“filialandlovingfreedom.”Andalwayswithmoderation,“Lovenothingtoomuch,noteventhevirtues.”(…) Benotmistaken,iftheMonsieurfromGenevarecommendsthisrelaxedandjoyfuldevotion,itisinnowayinordertoexempthisspiritualdaughtersfrom effort and courage. It is rather to help them to achieve this. Truedevotion, indeed, ought to be strong and combatant, “No recompensewithoutvictory,andnovictorywithoutwar.”Butperseverantefforthasnobetterhelpersthanflexibilityandjoy. Despitebeingverywilling,Francis’sevencorrespondentshavenotyetreachedperfection.Ontheroadtoit,sometimestheyfail.Anditisthenthatthe danger of revolting against one’s self awaits them and one fine day,despondency.Francisthenrevertstohiscentraltheme:Godcertainlydoes

notwishforsintoexist,butthepainthatcomefromit,thispainisGod’swillandoughtthereforetofindusinagreement.Andifweareinagreement,itwillarouseinus“acertainjoyfulhumilitythatenjoysseeingandknowingourmisery”andthatistobefoundfarfromthe“discouragingandtroubledhate”againstourdefects.Thuseverything,evenourfalls,canbeprofitable. However, we do not acquire the difficult art of using one’smistakesovernight.Greatpatienceisnecessaryandthemostdifficultkindispatiencewithone’sself.ThisvirtueisSaintFrancis’preferreddaughter,“Wemustbepatientwitheveryone,andprimarilywithourselves,whoaremoretiresometoourselvesthananyoneelse.” OneisnotsurprisedtolearnthataChristiantrainedatthisschoolisalikeablecompanion.Theirdevotionisunlikelytorepelthosewhoholdhumanvalues in high esteem. Their devotion is not sullen, does not hesitate to“powdertheirhair,”isattractive.Andthisnecessary.Itisitsfirstcalling,wewould say today. “Honour your devotion,” Francis writes to Madame laPrésidenteBrulart,“Makeitterriblyamiabletoallthosewhowillknowit,butabove all to your family. Make sure that everyonehas good things to sayaboutit.Yourgoodhusbandwillloveyourdevotionifheseesthat,asyourdevotiongrows,youarefriendliertohimandsmootherintheaffectionyoubearhim.” OnecannotreproachtheBishopofGenevaforencouragingthezealouslayofgoodworks.(…) ThisgenerousandradiantdevotionthatwetodaywouldcalltheloveofGoddemandsthefavourableclimateofabsoluteconfidenceinGod,inordertoblossom,developandreach itscompletefulfilment. Ihave justaddedanew key word to Salesian spirituality: confidence. It is present, eitherexpressedorimplied,inhislettersaswellashisworks.Itiswhatenablesadiscipleof St Francis to remainpeaceful and smiling throughout the fights,threats, after their mistakes, for they trust their Father, knowing that Heorganisesthingsforthegoodofhischild.“Restinhiscare,believingthathewill do what is best for you, providing that you, in turn, you use gentlediligence.Isaygentlediligencebecauseviolentdiligencespoiltheheartandthingsandarenotdiligencebutzealandtrouble.” The aim of this devout and confident life is the union with God, acompletebelongingtotheLord.NumerousarethetimesthatweencounterinFrancis’writingsthisformulathatdefinesthesummitwhereheaimstoleadthesoulthathasacceptedhishelp,“beingtotallyHis”,belongingtoGod.

By following the itinerary that throughdevotionandconfidence leadsthe soul to holiness, we have not mentioned the spiritual exercises thatperhapsyouexpectedinthebeginning.ThisisbecausefortheMonsieurfromGeneva, theprimarymeans that ought to enable his correspondents livingfullyintheworldtoreachperfectionistheaccomplishment,ateverymoment,ofdivinewill.Nonetheless,heurgentlyrecommendstothosewhocantogoto daily mass and regular confession. He is even more insistent that hiscorrespondentsbefaithfultoprivateprayereveryday.Hetalkstothemoftenaboutit.Ifweweretogathertogetherallthepassagesthatdealwithsubjectinhisvolumeofletters,wewouldhaveasmalltreatiseonprivateprayer.Wewould be able notice the extreme importance that he attaches to thepreparationforprivateprayer;wewouldbeabletoobtainpreciousadviceonhowtobehavewhenfacedwithdifficulties;wewouldobservehisinsistenceonthefactthatthesoulmustgiveuptotheimpulsionsoftheHolySpiritassoonastheyrevealthemselves. (…) Have I managed to show why so manytwentieth century lay people still find Francis deSales tobe somodern?And that is so,despite thefact that he does not speak in today’s language,despite the fact that we do not encounter in hiswritingcertaintopicsthataremoreimportanttoourgeneration:themysticalBody,God’slivingwithinthesoul,thePascalmystery,etc.…,despitethefactthatthesacramentofmarriageandwhatwecallconjugaland family spirituality have only a very restrictedplaceinhisworks? SinceFrancis’time,theconditionsof lifehavechanged—oh how much!—and intellectual tastestoo.Andyethisspirituality,orratherhisspiritualpedagogy,haslostnothingofitstopicalityandefficiency!Thisisbecauseofitsrealism.Bythis,Imean,itscapacitytoadapttocircumstancesandstatesoflife.SuchisthegoodthatFrancishadsought. IncontactwithCalvinistswho livedandexperiencedaprofoundly personal piety andwith somany Catholics of amore formalistreligion,hecameupwithaplantoenablethelatteraccedetoanauthenticspirituallife,notdespitethedutiesoftheirstate,butthankstothem.Hehad

understoodthatinordertosucceed,hisdoctrineneedtoputtheaccentnotprimarily on religious practices, because therewould be a great danger ofhavingadividebetweenChristianlifeandhumanactivities,notonthesinglepursuitof interiorpurity,because thedangerwouldbegreat introspectionandspiritualisolationism,notoncontemplationbecausethedangerwouldbenolessgreat,ofevasion,butfirmlyontheseeking,loveandaccomplishmentofGod’swill. Andnotona theoreticalwill ofGod,buton theone that isobvious to everyone in the obligations of their own vocation and in thethousandsofcircumstancesofdailylife. This type of spirituality, we can see, has no problem in suiting allsituations,fromthepooresttotherichest,thoseingoodhealthandthesick,couplesandsinglepeople,twentiethcenturypeopleaswellasthosefromtheseventeenthcentury. This pedagogy of St Francis is undoubtedly realistic, but primarilyevangelical. Christ himself, whom he invited his correspondents tocontemplate,didhehaveanotherreligionotherthantheFather’swill?“Ihavecomedownfromheaven,nottodoMyownwill,butthewillofHimwhosentMe.”Forusasforhim,doingGod’swilliscalledlovingGod.HenriCaffarel

TheDevoutLifeChapterXXXVIII.CounselstoMarriedPeopleMarriageistobehonouredbyallMARRIAGEisagreatSacramentbothinJesusChristandHisChurch,andonetobehonouredtoall,byallandinall.Toall,foreventhosewhodonotenteruponitshouldhonouritinallhumility.Byall,foritisholyaliketopoorastorich.Inall,foritsorigin,itsend,itsformandmatterareholy.ItisthenurseryofChristianity,whencetheearthispeopledwithfaithful,tillthenumberofthe elect in Heaven be perfected; so that respect for the marriage tie isexceedingly important to thecommonwealth,ofwhich it is thesourceandsupply.(…)
