CALIFORXIA PILOT SAVES DISABLED PLANE W I T H KNWLEDG OF RADIO RECEPTION Kelmes H .Black, a 1t.commnder i n the U.S .Naval Ljir Reserve, was returning hor

The s t r icken plane imed ia to ly began los ing a l t i t ude and HEB the ten.CalifornIa r e se rv i s t s plus a t s lev i s ion cameramn from KTTV s t a r t ed throwing-out a l l w e c c s s z r y equipment t o l ighten the load. The plane kept on losing a l t i tude . It wound up only 300 f e e t zbove the Pacific.

CXle thousand miles f ron the Iiawaii base and radio signals, too f a r from i t ' s maintanence base a t Los Alamitos, and too close t o the water f o r taking s t a r bear- wings, the plane faced possible d i sas te r . Then Black advised t h a t he knew a way t o pick up a weak rzdio s igna l f r o 2 Hzwaii. In f ac t , he already had the s igna l on h i s receiver and would tu rn back with t h a a i r c r a f t , escorting them t o Hawsii v i a i n s t r m e n t work. Background of the f l t g h t was a s follows. When we turned bwk t o fly escor t on tkre disabled plane, we were about a hundred miles short of midpoint. Midpoint being som 1150-1200 miles out and i s marked by a s t a t i on ship. It was 1.00 A 3 and Bsw2iin broadcast s ta t ionb were shut down.

However, I w s s able t o pick up the q o h ~ k k % lltiomerll f a i n t l y but ident i f iable . An hour l a t c r we decided t o t u r n off t o H i 1 0 which w28 f i f t y miles nearer, But it was 25 degrees t o the l e f t , with nothine t o hone i n on but an orzlnairy rmpe s ta t fon , ( ~ h e s e form the' .ii~r*rzy "Beazsll znd they reach a t the outside only 200 nilos I wzs aSle however to -pick up the ~ a r r i e r on 305 KC/S and stsrt hornink i n ' a r ~ from Tore than 700 miles out, long before it 1s iden t i f i cz t ion was audible.
