Navigation SkillsBefore You Apply, Consider:
• Funding Source:
• Is your agency/organization eligible?
• Does your proposed project meet eligibility requirements?
• Is your proposal competitive?– Does your project address a
priority of the funding source?
11
California Integrated Waste Management Board
Am I Ready?
• What partners do I need?• Is the project ready?– Will I need permits?– Do I need to do CEQA?– How long will it take?
• Do I have adequate resources to plan, implement, and administer the proposal?
12
California Integrated Waste Management Board
Basic Components of Most Grant Applications
• Needs Statement: No PROBLEM = No PROJECT
• Objectives
• Methods/Work Plan
• Evaluation
• Budget
13
California Integrated Waste Management Board
About the Needs Statement
• Support the need for your project with statistical evidence; surveys, studies– Don’t just reiterate state or federal
statistics– Use local demographic information
• Show how this proposal will solve a problem in your community
14
California Integrated Waste Management Board
Evaluation is Critical• Include both process and outcome
evaluation• Don’t confuse measurement or tracking with
evaluation– instead of how many brochures were produced,
tell us if those brochures were effective; did they reach the target population; did participation increase?
• Was the project cost effective?
15
California Integrated Waste Management Board
Don’t Assume….• That the funding source knows….–Who you are or what your organization is
about• mission/goals of your organization
• “scope of influence”; physical boundaries, demographics, target population
–Who is participating and to what capacity–What problem you’re trying to address
16
California Integrated Waste Management Board
Make It Easy for Reviewers• Be Clear, Concise, Precise
– (your application is not scored by weight!)
– relate everything back to the problem
– clearly state intended outcome – reviewers love bullets, tables,
charts, graphs• Have an outsider, someone not
familiar with the project, read your proposal for clarity
17
California Integrated Waste Management Board
Common Pitfalls
• Haven’t done your homework
• Application is not geared to local needs
