INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

Correspondence. Submit manu-scripts in duplicate (original andone copy) to ASM PublicationsOffice, 1913 I St., N.W., Washing-ton, D.C. 20006.

General policy. Any manu-script submitted must be a reportof unpublished original research orclinical investigation, which is notbeing considered for publicationelsewhere. Each manuscript shouldpresent the results of an independ-ent, cohesive study; numbered se-ries papers are discouraged.

The "editorial style" of theJournal essentially follows the CBEStyle Manual (3rd ed., AIBS,1972). Genetics symbols shouldessentially follow the recommenda-tions of Demerec et al. (Genetics54:61, 1966). Biochemical nomen-clature, including abbreviations andsymbols, should follow the recom-mendations of the IUPAC-IUBCommission on Biochemical No-menclature (CBN) and the Instruc-tions to Authors of J. Biol. Chem.and Arch. Biochem. Biophys. (firstissue of each year), which are basedupon the CBN Recommendationsand contain a list thereof. Re-prints of these Recommendationsand advice on biochemical andchemical nomenclature are avail-able from the NRC Office of Bio-chemical Nomenclature (W. E.Cohn, Director), Biology Division,Oak Ridge Nat'l. Lab., Box Y,Oak Ridge, Tenn. 37830 (phone:615-483-8611, Ext. 3-75 14). Nor-mally, abbreviations (except thoseof standard units of measurementand symbols of the elements)should be defined and introducedparenthetically at first use in thetext. Enzyme activities should beexpressed in the terms set out inCBN's Enzyme Nomenclature(1972) (Elsevier Scientific Publish-ing Co.). Lengths, weights, vol-umes, and molarities should makeuse of the prefixes m, g, n, and p(for 10-3, 106, 10-9, and 1012,respectively), where applicable, avoiding such compound prefixesas mg and ug. Metric units shouldbe employed as much as possible. The Editors reserve the privilege ofediting manuscripts to make themconform to the above-mentionedstylistic conventions.

Form of manuscript. All partsof the manuscript should be typed

double-space or, preferably, triple-space. Most manuscripts can andshould be divided into the followingsections: Abstract, Introduction,Materials and Methods, Results,Discussion, Acknowledgements, and Literature Cited. Only oneweight of heading (paragraph lead-in) should be used within each sec-tion.

Title. A single statement of thesubject of a paper is preferred to amain title-subtitle arrangement. Ashort version of the title (no morethan 46 characters and spaces)should be supplied for use as arunning head.

Abstract. An Abstract appearsat the beginning of each paper. TheAbstract should not exceed 250words.

Literature Cited. In the text, references are cited by number. The Literature Cited section shouldbe typed in alphabetical order, byfirst author, and numbered. Namesof Journals are abbreviated accord-ing to Bibliographic Guide forEditors & Authors (AmericanChemical Society, 1974). Litera-ture citations should be restrictedto closely pertinent papers. Cita-tions of abstracts, theses, "unpub-lished data," "personal commun-ications," and "in press" will notbe accepted in the Literature Cited.

Tables. Each table should betyped on a separate page. The datashould be arranged so that columnsof like material read down, notacross. The headings should besufficiently, clear so that the mean-ing of the data will be understand-able without reference to the text.Explanatory footnotes are per-mitted, but detailed descriptions ofthe experiments are not. The mate-rials and methods used to gain thedata should properly remain in thesection of that name.

Figures. A complete set of f-ig-ures, preferably' glossy photographs, should accompany each of the twocopies of the manuscript. Graphs(submit as photographs) should befinished drawings not needing fur-ther artwork or type-setting. Abso-lutely' no part of a graph should betypewritten (except the legend, which should be typed on a sepa-rate page). Each figure should benumbered and should include thename of the author, either in themargin or on the back (marked

lightly with a soft pencil). All letter-ing should be done with a letteringset. Most graphs will be reducedto 6.6 cm in width, and all elementsin the drawing should be preparedto withstand this reduction. Thelegend of the figure should provideenough information so that the fig-ure is understandable without ref-erence to the text. Experimentaldetails from Materials and Methodsshould not be repeated in figurelegends.

Nomenclature of microorga-nisms. In general, the nomencla-ture for bacteria presented inBergey's Manual of DeterminativeBacteriology (8th ed., 1974) is used.If an author challenges this nomen-clature, his own judgment will befollowed, but the name in Bergey'sManual should follow in paren-theses the first time the name isused in the text and in the Ab-stract. Papers which include exten-sive taxonomic material (e.g., de-scription of new taxa) will not bepublished in this journal. Theproper place for publication oftaxonomic material is the Inter-national Journal of SystematicBacteriology (IJSB), which is pub-lished by the ASM for the Interna-tional Association of Microbiolog-ical Societies. If the main thrustof such a paper is not taxonomy, the paper should be divided, thetaxonomy portion being submittedto IJSB and the other portion tothis journal.

Notes. The accepted form forNotes is somewhat different fromthe foregoing. Contributors shouldconsult a recent issue of the Journalfor style. Notes should not exceed500 words. The abstract should notexceed 25 words.

Cop yright. Once a paper hasbeen published in the Journal, which is a copyrighted publication, the legal ownership of all parts ofthe paper, including the illustra-tions, has passed from the authorto ASM. If the same author, orany author, wishes to republishmaterial previously published inthe Journal, he must first receivewritten permission from ASM.

Reprints. Reprints (in multiplesof 100) may be purchased by con-tributors. A table showing the costof reprints, and an order form, willbe sent with the proof.
