February 14, 2016 First Sunday of Lent Today’s first reading describes the offering of first fruits the people of Israel were to present to the Lord in thanksgiving for their deliverance from Egypt and the gift of the promised land. Is my offering an appro-priate response to the many blessings the Lord has given me?

Lent —a season to open our hearts more fully to Jesus First Sunday of Lent Week of February 14, 2016 Listen to the Word (Luke 4:1 – 13) What words or phrases strike you? What in this reading touches your heart? What lingers in your memory? Look into your life Question for children: When you feel tempted to do wrong, how do you remain strong in your faith? Question for youth: What is one thing you will do during Lent to become more open to God in your life? Question for adults: As you understand the temptation of Jesus in the desert, which of the devil’s offerings is hardest for you to resist? Activities for the week Take these activities to further reflect: Lent is a time of prayerful reflection. Discuss with your family a time during the week or day that all radios, stereos, televisions, computers, and telephones will be shut off so family members can pray. Call it the family’s prayer time. At the end of the week, ask family members to share what they have learned or gained from the experience. Will your family be open to God’s presence during the Lenten season? The traditional Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and alms giving, remind us that we need God. As a family, discuss how you can observe these Lenten practices. While there is a tradition of “giving something up” for Lent, this year consider instead “doing something extra” for someone who could use help or assistance. That might include volunteering to take an elderly neighbor shopping or helping him or her with spring chores. How will you participate in our parish Lenten observances this year? Remember we have the Stations of the Cross on Fridays, the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on Wednesdays, the Sacra-ment of Reconciliation on Saturdays, a Day of Reflection for Women and a Day of Reflection for Men, the CRS Rice Bowl, etc.

Ve tu vida Pregunta para los niños: Cuando están tentados a hacer algo malo, ¿cómo se mantienen firmes en su fe? Pregunta para los jóvenes: ¿Qué harás durante la Cuaresma para acer-carte más a Dios? Pregunta para los adultos: Al comprender la tentación de Jesús en el desierto, ¿cuál de las ofrendas del diablo les sería más difícil de resistir? Actividades para la semana Tomen estas actividades para reflexionar más: La Cuaresma es una época de reflexión por medio de la oración. Acuer-den en familia sobre una hora de la semana o de un día en que se apaguen las radios, los aparatos de sonido, las televisiones, las computadoras y los teléfonos para que los miembros de la familia pueda rezar. Llamen a esta hora la hora de oración familiar. Al final de la semana, pidan a los miembros de la familia que digan lo que aprendieron o ganaron de esta experiencia. ¿Estará su familia abierta a la presencia de Dios durante el tiempo de Cuaresma? Las prácticas tradicionales de oración, ayuno y dar limosna de la Cuaresma, nos recuerdan que necesitamos a Dios. En familia, comenten cómo ustedes pueden llevar a cabo estas prácticas Cuaresmales. Mientras que existe una tradición de “renunciar a algo” en la Cuaresma, este año en vez de hacer eso, consideren “hacer algo extra” para alguien que necesite ayuda. Eso puede incluir trabajar de voluntario para llevar de compras a un vecino que es anciano o ayudarle con labores alrededor de su casa. ¿Cómo van a participar en las tradiciones Cuaresmales de nuestra parro-quia? Recuerde que tenemos las Estaciones del Via Crucis los viernes, la Expisición del Santísimo Sacramento los miércoles, el Sacramento de la Reconciliación los sábados, un Día de Reflexión para Mujeres, un Día de Reflexión para hombres, el programa CRS Plato de Arroz, etc.

Los "Tallados de Tierra Santa", vienen de la Tierra Santa a los Esta-dos Unidos representando a los talladores de madera cristianos de Belén que dependen del turismo para mantener a sus familias. Debido a la mala situación y la interrupción de la actividad turística, más de 800 familias de la Tierra Santa están en peligro de tener que abandonar sus hogares en busca de trabajo. La misión de "Tallados de Tierra Santa" es traer y vender los tallados de madera de olivo en las iglesias católicas en los Estados Unidos para ayudar a que las familias cristianas puedan permanecer en sus hogares y mantener a sus familias. Estos cristianos que se ganan la vida con la venta de sus tallados a mano de artículos religiosos en madera de olivo dependen de las ventas de los hermosos tallados, como son los Nacimientos, Crucifijos, Rosarios, Estatuillas, Imágenes de la Última Cena, y otros artículos religiosos. Los tallados están disponibles en Nuestra Señora de La Salette este fin de semana —13 y 14 de febrero, para apoyar este proyecto de auto-ayuda que permite mantener a los cristianos presentes en la Tierra Santa.

The “Holy Land Carvings”, from the Holy Land come to the United States representing the Christian wood carvers of Bethle-hem that rely on tourism to support their families. Due to the bad situation and the interruption of the tourist trade, more than 800 families in the Holy Land are in danger of having to leave their homes in search of work. The mission of “Holy Land Carvings” is to bring and sell the Olive Wood Carvings to the Catholic Churches in the United States to help the Christian families remain in their homes and support their families. These Christians who make their livelihood through the selling of their hand carved olive wood religious items are depending on the sales of beautiful carving, such as Nativity Scenes, Crucifixes, Rosaries, Statues, Pictures of the Last Sup-per, and several other religious items. The carvings are available at Our Lady of La Salette this week-end —February 13 and 14, to help support this self-help project that enables to keep the Christians present in the Holy Land.
