Lata in 1969, whan tha Ellington Era, under the di¬rection of the Master hlmaalf, had nearly run itsIllustrious course, ana of the old guard, altoist andclarinettist RUSSELL PROCOPE delivered to posteritywhat constitutes, to my heart and ear, 50 bars of themost sublime and moving clarinet blues ever to be cap¬tured from a live performance. These seem to possessall the qualities essential to the best in Jazz; re¬laxed, melodic construction; absence of even thefaintest suspicion of anarchy — ftjssell'a choice ofnotes closely follows the harmonies of the simplest of12-bar blues sequences; the tone warm, woody, sonorous, enhanced by a beautifully—controlled vibrato; nostriving for theatrical effect -- never climbing outof the lower-to-middle register. On the face thereseem to be a lot of notes, but how they swing! And, on

reflection, no superfluities, never disturbing the un¬derlying pulse of the music, tha steady heart-beat ofJazz, exemplifying the true meaning and application ofsyncopated rhythmic re-arrangement. In the completeperformance, Russell Procope's tour-de-force is pre¬ceded by a really beautiful 12-bar piano/bass intro¬duction from Duke himself and Victor Gaskin, followedby a statement of tha ana thema of the piece, darklyscored for 3 low-register clarinets. Then ProcopB'sbeautiful solo takes over for the reminder of the per¬formance. there is so much an offer here that thesecond half of hia masterpiece must nesds be held overuntil the next Bulletin.Transcribed from 2-LP Sat, ’Duke Ellington's BirthdayConcert". United Artists UAD-60001. Recorded Man¬chester, England, 25 November 1969.
