Lead to Serve
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
– Philippians 4:13
There was recently a news story by Minnesota Public
Radio which said that almost 250 cities and towns
around that state have no one willing to fill the role of
mayor. One man said everyone in town was worried
that they would get a write-in vote and then they
would have to step up!
When we live in Ohio and every other commercial is
for an election, it might seem like everyone wants to
be in charge, but the truth is, fewer and fewer people
want to take on the role of leadership.
Unfortunately, we’ve seen this trend in churches as
well. People have seen conflict in the church and
churches that are slow to change. The most eager
people with the newest ideas become quickly
disillusioned with the process of church and they
choose not to participate in leadership.
That leaves leadership to the few people who have
already been doing it (and know it’s not that awful.)
Right now, Gethsemane is in a time of transition, the
people who have been leaders at Gethsemane for the
past 30 or more years are not able to do all they used
to. We need new leaders to come and share new
ideas and new ways of being church. At the moment,
our nominations team, Judy Reuning and Violet Meek,
are asking people to be in leadership positions in the
church. If you’ve already agreed to serve, thank you! If
you are (or were!) asked to be a leader, please give it
serious consideration. Contact them or me. If you’ve
already said no, you can still call them back and tell
them you’ve changed your mind! We need new
people to take us into the future!
Leadership can be difficult. But like most difficult
things, it can also be very rewarding.
People may feel like when they serve the church it
should be in ways of direct service, either in worship,
or in helping people. But serving is also about leading.
We lead to serve. Serve God by being a leader!
Rev. June Wilkins

This four-week series continues for two more weeks.
It explores the ways in which beliefs (both regular and

converse and collide in our culture … and to describe
some of the ways that faith endures.

B.R.E.A.D. Listening Process & Issue Updates
For two Sundays Gethsemane will focus on our
mission of justice. Gethsemane is a member of
B.R.E.A.D., the central Ohio Justice Ministry Organi-
zation that brings churches together to work on issues
of justice. Together, B.R.E.A.D. congregations have
had successes in the areas of Mental Health, reducing
Payday Loan interest rates, the establishment and
funding of the Columbus Land Bank that tears down
abandoned properties, eliminating suspensions for
truancy in Columbus Schools, and many others.
The first step in our year of working on justice issues is
the Listening Process. During this time, we hear about
different problems that are personally affecting
members of B.R.E.A.D. congregations. We will do this
in our Adult Education hour on Oct. 16 right after
worship. We’ll break up into small groups and share
our concerns. This year, B.R.E.A.D. is proposing
something different. Each year, we have usually come
up with a new issue, but this year we are considering
focusing on our many ongoing campaigns: municipal
ID’s, gang violence, jobs for former prisoners, jobs
creation in the Linden neighborhood, and one
campaign that was a success that needs more
attention – Restorative Justice for first time, juvenile,
non-violent offenders. We will ask for your feedback
on this proposal and ask if you might have any stories
or concerns that relate to those issues.
On October 23, Rob Sievert-Wagner, the lead
organizer for B.R.E.A.D. and Gethsemane’s organizer,
will be here to give us updates on all of these
campaigns and to answer any questions about
Gethsemane’s Justice Ministry, the B.R.E.A.D.
Organization, and the national DART Organization.
Justice is an important part of our call as Christians.
Join us on Oct. 16 & 23 to kick off our justice year!

Living," which contains the famous chorale 'Jesu, Joy
of Man's Desiring' as well as selections from his

PLAY & LEARNPLAY & LEARNPLAY & LEARNPLAY & LEARN
A New “Neighborhood” Arrives on the Southwest Playground
of Play & Learn
You might remember the Mister Roger’s Neighborhood Theme song, “Won't You Be My Neighbor?” written by
Fred Rogers in 1967. Its lyrics read as follows:
It’s a beautiful day in this neighborhood,
A beautiful day for a neighbor.
Would you be mine? Could you be mine?
It's a neighborly day in this beauty wood,
A neighborly day for a beauty.
Would you be mine? Could you be mine?
I've always wanted to have a neighbor just like you.
I've always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you.
So, let's make the most of this beautiful day.
Since we're together we might as well say:
Would you be mine? Could you be mine?
Won't you be my neighbor?
Won't you please, Won't you please?
Please won't you be my neighbor?
Play & Learn has recently developed a mini neighbor-
hood all of its own with a row of play houses on the
back playground. The children are enjoying playing in
the houses and “visiting with their neighbors.”
Through their neighborhood play, they are esta-
blishing friendships and developing a sense of
community. If you have not already checked out the
Play & Learn neighborhood, please feel free to stop by
for a look and explore the new neighborhood – or
peek out the library windows from inside. Many
thanks to Gethsemane members, Dave Norman and
Dave & Judy Kulikowski, for giving of their time and
talents to assemble the wood houses and for many
others’ helpful hands used to transport the houses
from the garage to the playground.
Conversations heard by the staff: The children like to
play restaurant and ice cream shop asking, “Would
you like some more of that?”
The Big Bird class took out some of their play food
with some pretend slices of peppers, and one of the
children said, “It’s kale.”
One of the Cookie Monsters said, “I’m going to run
next door to the neighbors.”
The Kermits enjoyed acting out the story of the Three
Little Pigs with their three new houses.
I wonder what the neighbors will be doing/discussing
after returning to their neighborhood from field trips
to the pumpkin patch, picking apples, and gathering
leaves.

Help with a climate action. Sign a Sierra Club
post card – Cut Methane Pollution from All
Oil and Gas Operations. Sierra Club will send
the cards to the incoming president’s staff in
December.
Methane is a potent climate pollutant,
trapping many times more heat than carbon
dioxide. The main sources are oil and gas
drilling, fracking, and coal-fired power plants.
These leaks often include toxic chemicals that cause smog and asthma attacks. This year the EPA introduced
rules that control methane emissions from new and modified production sources. This campaign calls for
existing sources to comply with EPA standards, and is opposed by industry. --- Joanne Leussing
