Last October 17, 2018, PICPA NMMChad a courtesy meeting with theDepartment of Education (DepEd)Valenzuela’s Curriculum DevelopmentHead, Dr. Victoria Tafalla. The PICPANMMC and DepEd SHS-ABM Teacherspartnership is hatching a program thatwill hopefully devise effective methodson teaching Accounting and BusinessSubjects in the Senior High Schoolstudents.

Free Seminars
Last October 17, 2018 a free seminar was hosted by the National Federationof Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants - National Capital RegionCouncil (NFJPIA-NCR) in cooperation with the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ngValenzuela - Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA-PLV),KPMG|R.G. Manabat & Co. and the PICPA Northern Metro Manila Chapter(PICPA NMMC). The theme of the event was “In Focus: Delineating theAccounting of Different Government Branches”. The seminar was held atthe Auditorium of Students' Center Building, Maysan Campus, Pamantasanng Lungsod ng Valenzuela and was participated in by students under theAccountancy Program from schools in the northern districts of the region.
On October 19, 2018, PICPA-NMMC in cooperation with JPIA-DLSAUconducted a FREE TRAINING for the Senior High School TEACHERS (SHS) withthe topic on “How to Effectively Teach Accounting and Business Subjects inthe SHS” at the Osmeña Hall of DLSAU. The speakers were faculty membersfrom the CBMA of DLSAU: Dr. Glen de Leon and Mrs. Alicia Pedracio. Theparticipants were highly satisfied and are looking forward to attend otherfuture workshops on basic accounting. The seminar participants wereteachers handling SHS - Accounting and Business Subjects in the followingschools: Malinta N.H.S., Paso de Blas N.H.S., Gen. T. de Leon N.H.S., BignayN.H.S., Parada N.H.S., Valenzuela N.H.S., Caruhatan N. H.S., Vicente P.Trinidad N.H.S., Ugong N.H.S., and Wawang Pulo N.H.S.
PICPA NMMC’s Mr. Mark Chito D. Fajiculay guested at the Manuel L.Quezon University (MLQU) last October 25, 2018 and conducted a freeseminar “Selected PFRS Updates.” It was attended approximately by ahundred participants who are 2nd degree holders aiming to qualify in theCPA Licensure Examination. This is one of the social projects of theChapter in celebration of the College Week of School of Management,Accountancy, Real Estate and Tourism (SMART). Mr. Fajiculay’s lectureincluded updates in the Standards: PFRS 15: Revenue from Contracts withCustomers, PFRS 16: Leases, and PFRS 9:Financial Instruments. AQuestion & Answer (Q&A) portion was held after talk for the queries ofparticipants. This tie-up undertaking targets PICPA-Northern Metro ManilaChapter’s accountancy students and CPA aspirants, updating them with anoverview of the landscape of the accountancy profession.
PICPA Northern Metro Manila Chapter(NMMC) held its 4th regular monthlymeeting last October 26, 2018 atShangrila Restaurant, West Avenue,Quezon City. Among the items tackledwere financial performance andmembership updates. The agenda alsoincluded the participation of the chapterat the 73rd PICPA Annual Convention,Presidents Monthly Activity Report andCommittee Report.

Last October 25, 2018, PICPAns visited the DLSAU Salikneta Farm for theimplementation of its CSR Activity for the benefit of the scholars of DLSAU. Afree seminar on “Financial Literacy” was given to BS Agriculture students ofDLSAU. Mr. Junzon Velasco, Co-chair of NMMC Committee in Educationserved as the Resource Speaker. The seminar covered topics such asinvestments, personal growth, and money management.

ACCOUNTING FOR NON-ACCOUNTANTS
Fourth Time Charm: for Pag-IBIG
In line with PICPA’s theme for this fiscal year of “Promoting Integrity, AdvancingExcellence” and as part of Team EMMC’s social responsibility, PICPA-EMMCconducted two whole-day trainings on “Accounting for Non-Accountants”. Around500 participants were in four (4) batches of training for Pag-IBIG Fund’s regular andjob order employees. The training was done in cooperation with Pag-IBIG Fund,special thanks to Ms. Majelia Ubaldo, Pag-IBIG Fund Division Head and EMMC keyprojects committee chair, for leading in the coordination with Pag-IBIG Fund and formanaging the logistical requirements.
The second to fourth batches were simultaneously held last October 20, 2018 atthe Pag-IBIG Fund Ortigas Branch and Pag-IBIG Fund Makati Branch with 380participants. The resource speakers were Mr. Richard Ibarra, Ms. EdralinEnriquez, Ms. Ira Samonte and Ms. Ivy Marie Zafe. The second batch was gracedby Ms. Erlinda Francisco, Pag-IBIG Fund Vice President for Operations and Mr.Dee Sonido, Makati Branch Head. The events were indeed “Punong-Puno ngPag-IBIG”.

Team EMMC’s very own Ms. Ivy Marie Zafe facilitated a lecture aboutFinancial Literacy last October 22, 2018 to the SPED Teachers of PhilippineOrthopedic Center School of Differently Abled Learners. The seminar was incoordination with Junior Achievement Philippines. A workshop was also heldduring the lecture to better give the teachers an experience of managing theirfinances for their long-term benefit.

The Philippine Association of the Professional Regulatory Board Members,Inc. (PAPRB) in partnership with Professional Regulation Commission (PRC)held the 7th Philippine Professional Summit (PPS7) last October 15-16, 2018 atthe Fiesta Pavilion, Manila Hotel. The theme of the event is "“TRILEMMA: TheChallenges to Glocal Professionals - Environment, Socio-Economic, and HealthIssues”. The said summit was attended by various professionals from differentfields and industries, including Accountancy, Engineering, Architects and manyothers. PICPA Western Metro Manila Chapter with special participation of SGV-SDS Clusteronce again made a difference through a community-based outreach program at theNayon ng Kabataan, Welfareville Compound, Mandaluyong City last October 20,2018. It has been a continuous commitment of PICPA WMMC over the years toconduct this event, engaging in an amazing opportunity to touch the hearts ofpeople, putting smiles on the faces of some community children. This year,appliances, school supplies, goodies and children’s clothes were given to around 150kids and their families. The event was also graced with a special dance performancefrom the children and with some kiddie games as well that wrapped the day with alot of fun and entertainment.

Culmination of the Eight Part Seminar Series on Accounting for Non-Accountants
After the eight-day series of the free seminar “Accounting for Non-Accountants” given to a batch of entrepreneurs, the culmination andrecognition of all their hard work was held at the DTI Negosyo CenterMandaluyong last November 5, 2018. PICPA WMMC Officers together with theCity Government of Mandaluyong headed by Mayor Menchie Abalos gatheredand celebrated the success of individual entrepreneurs. Certificates ofCompletion and Appreciation were given to the entrepreneurs and PICPAWMMC who worked so hard and have participated all throughout the seminar.
Doubling the 1st GMM attendance, PICPA SMMC’s SecondGeneral Membership Meeting (GMM) made a recordwhen it collaborated with SM Prime and SM Retailcompanies. The event was attended by 283 participants:77 SM employees and 206 PICPA SMMC officers and PICPAmembers. The GMM was held at the Mall of Asia ArenaAnnex (MAAX) Auditorium, SM Mall of Asia on November7, 2018 from 9am to 6pm. Topics tackled were TRAIN 1B-General Tax Amnesty Bill, TRAIN 2 Rationalization ofCorporate Tax Incentives and PFRS 15- Revenue Principles,Issues and Applications, which were led by SMMC’sOfficers Aaron C. Escartin and Maricris See and P&A GrantThornton Senior Manager Niccolo Ian N. Unera. SMMCPresident Tina Ocampo also presented her President’sReport. All in all, the event was a huge success with mostparticipants actively engaged not only during the questionand answer portion but throughout the whole event.

SMMC’s Free Seminar For Accounting Teachers
The Albay ExCL (Excellence Connectivity Learning) seminar of PICPA SMMC was conducted inpartnership with PICPA Albay Chapter at the AVP Hall, Tahao Road, Legazpi City from October 18to 19, and was attended by 80 CPAs from the chapter.Two resource speakers on the first day shared their knowledge and expertise: Mr. Mark Carrasco,audit manager from P&A Grant Thornton, explained the financial statement ratio analysis andMs. Maricris See, Senior Director from SGV & Co. and director of PICPA SMMC, provided thediscussion on the common issues on income tax and value-added tax. Moreover, Ms. MarivicRebulanan, Director from SGV & Co. took up the discussion on employee benefits taxation whileDean Danny Cabulay conducted a workshop on Stress Management during the second day.Included in the ExCL Program is a formal arrangement with the beneficiary-chapter to allocatepart of the proceeds to the Financial Assistance Program benefiting five (5) more scholars on topof the other eight (8) financial assistance beneficiaries being shouldered by SMMC, for a totalcount of thirteen (13) scholar-beneficiaries.

The monthly board meeting of PICPA SMMC wasconducted on October 15, 2018 at BDO Roxas CruzTagle. Among those tackled were the approval ofincrease in the recipients of financial assistance forCPA review, the final arrangements regardingupcoming ExCL activities and professionaldevelopment seminars, the 2nd GMM and the reviewof financial reports submitted by MMR includingfund management.

PICPA SMMC concluded a free seminar to 36 facultymembers of the Polytechnic University of thePhilippines on November 9, 2018 with topics on PFRS15, PFRS 16 and TRAIN Law. The seminar wasconducted by Ailyn D. Santiago (Director, SGV & Co.),Aaron C. Escartin (Tax Partner, SGV & Co.) and NikkoMiguel A. Angsico (Associate Director, SGV & Co.).
For the first time, PICPA SMMC conducted its ExCL program in Tandag City, Surigao del Sur. TheExCL program was held in partnership with PICPA Tandag (Surigao del Sur), PICPA Bislig (Surigaodel Sur) and PICPA Agusan del Sur Chapter. Pres Tina Ocampo, Directors Tess Pelejo and ClarkBabor also conducted a panel interview of qualified applicants for the Financial Assistanceprogram for CPA reviewees.The 3-day seminar was held from October 25 to 27, 2018 at Villa Maria Luisa Hotel in Tandag Cityand was attended by 110 CPAs & Non-CPAs from Tandag, Bislig and Agusan del Sur. All thevolunteer speakers were directors from PICPA SMMC. The topics discussed were AuditDocumentation, Fundamentals, Techniques and Best Practices by Mr. Eric J. Magcale, managingpartner and CEO of Eric J. Magcale and Co., CPAs, Updates on the Code of Ethics for ProfessionalAccountants and SEC Updates by Mr. Clark Joseph C. Babor, audit partner at BDO Roxas Cruz Tagleand PFRS for Small Entities by Mr. Yusoph A. Maute, senior audit manager at P&A Grant Thornton.

PICPA SMMC continues its commitment to partner-chapters through its ExCL program by conducting theproject with PICPA Antique Chapter on October 22 to 24, 2018. The 3-day seminar is the fourth leg ofthe 15-day seminar series to be conducted for the five chapters within the Western Visayas region:Iloilo, Aklan, Antique, Capiz and Negros Occidental. The beneficiaries of the seminar proceeds would bethe five chapters.The first two days of the Antique leg was conducted at the Function Hall of Eagle’s Hotel, Antique onOctober 22 to 23, and was attended by CPAs in the chapter (56 CPAs and Non-CPAs during the first day,56 CPAs & Non-CPAs and 62 students on the second day). The discussions were continued on October 24at The Venue, San Jose, Antique, attended by 47 CPAs and Non-CPAs and 48 students. The first day had 2resource speakers who shared their knowledge and expertise: Congressman Rico B. Geron of AGAPParty List spearheaded the discussion on Good Governance in Cooperatives while Ms. Venus A. Obsianafrom the CDA Region VI discussed the Updates for Cooperatives: Accounting and Compliance.The participants were treated to a productive discussion on their second and third day: Dr. Cesar A.Mansibang, CPA, MBA facilitated a session on Guidelines on General Management and Leadership andHow to Manage Conflicts in the Company. Mr. Aaron C. Escartin, CPA, MBA, tax partner from SGV & Co.,elaborated on the Taxes imposed on Government Transactions. He also explained the different rules fortransactions subject to Value-added tax and Other Percentage Tax.PICPA SMMC is also continuing the CSR project of Financial Assistance of CPA licensure reviewees forAntique.All CSR projects of SMMC have no costs to the chapter except for the filing fees for CPD application sinceall speakers are volunteers.
