ISSUE

ENRIQUE ADOLFO SAN JUANTHESSALONICA ANNE CADIZ VIENTREE ZOE SANTIAGO
“I am very much willing to sacrifice myself, and be an instrument kung
“To be able to perform a specific goal we
need unity, we need collaborative
competitiveness, we don’t need individual
competitiveness.”
“As a student leader, kapag may nakakabit na ‘leader’, tumanggap ka na
ng responsibilidad na hindi lahat gustong umako.”
In yearly election season, the Pamantasan is divided into three colors: Green, Blue, and Yellow. These colors signify major political parties in the university, namely Ang Partidong Tugon, Bukluran Party, and Ang Kampi, respectively. Each party claims to be guided by their own set of principles into effective leadership.
Winning candidate will lead the Supreme Student Council (SSC) of the university which has the responsibility to represent the student body. John Rapid D. Canonizado, incumbent SSC President, is known as a candidate from Ang KAMPI party and has gained several feedbacks on his term of leading the studentry.
This year, the said political organizations continue to contest to get the spot through their chosen representatives namely: Thessalonica Anne S. Cadiz from Ang Partidong Tugon, Enrique Adolfo C. San Juan from Bukluran Party, and Vientree Zoe B. Santiago from Ang KAMPI.
THE ASPIRING SSC PRESIDENTS“I am very much willing to sacrifice myself and be an instrument kung anuman ang pangangailangan ng students.” –Thessalonica Anne S. Cadiz, Ang Partidong Tugon
Having an experience on being the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the SSC on her sophomore year, Cadiz claims to have the idea of what to change and improve inside the student council. She is an incoming fourth year BS Psychology student
and is the External Vice President of Tugon-RESCUE
“It’s a great challenge for me to be the Supreme Student Council President on my junior year given t h at I a m c o m p e t i n g with the most r e s p e c t a b l e people from d i f f e r e n t p a r t i e s .” – Enrique Adolfo C. San Juan, Bukluran Party
Being the y o u n g e s t a m o n g t h e candidates, San Juan, mostly k n o w n a s
“Boogie”, comes from College o f H u m a n Development (CHD) taking Bachelor of Science in Social Works and is affiliated with Social Works Society as Vice President for Internal Affairs; and belongs in central committee of Bukluran Student’s Alliance-Integrated Students’ Organization.
“I believe that I need to step forward more than the way people see me superficially. Hindi lang dapat maganda ka lang, I mean you should use your beauty to influence others.”
- Vientree Zoe B. Santiago, Ang KAMPI
A BS Biology student, on her third year, Santiago is the crown of Bb. Pamantasan 2014 and World Miss University Philippines 2014. Santiago aims to prove that she could
be more than a pretty face, and that people will listen to her once they know her.
INSPIRATIONS IN SERVING THE UNIVERSITY
“Bakit ko ipagdadamot ‘yung sarili ko na mabigyan ng solusyon ang mga hinaing ng mga estudyante na ako rin, nararamdaman ko rin, at nakakaapekto sa iba’ti-ibang tao sa PLM.”
- Thessalonica Anne S. Cadiz, Ang Partidong Tugon
A c c o r d i n g to her, heart and passion for service are clichés, however, the aspiring president claims to have those as a student leader. Cadiz says she has the eye on students’ needs and is an instrument to address them.
“It [Bukluran] gave me the reason that being a student-leader is not just for the sake of having. It gave me the reason to serve the students because you know it should be you, not only the students but serving the society as well.” – Enrique Adolfo C. San Juan, Bukluran Party
Trained by his home organization, Bukluran party, he is nurtured to
have the initiative to serve not only the students but also the society. He uplifts the party’s principle that the students’ welfare is the supreme law.
“Naniniwala po kas i kami na ang magandang pamumuno ay hindi nasusukat s a b o n g g a n g selebrasyon ngunit ito ay nasusukat sa mga programa na naglalayon na magtagal na hindi lamang isang taon.”- Vientree Zoe B. Santiago, Ang KAMPI
S a n t i a g o believes in long term projects that are pro-student. Projects which results last even until the after the term, and that it would be best if the future students will benefit from them.
CURRENT SSC REVIEW“We think it’s not enough na ganun yung konseho, it’s time para ihalal yung talagang magbibigay ng mga tunay na serbisyo, magbibigay po ng isang taon na suporta, hindi lang paasa.”
- Thessalonica Anne S. Cadiz, Ang Partidong Tugon
The APT SSC President admits that she is not in the position to look into the flaws of the incumbent SSC,
however, she is convinced that as a student she hasn’t felt its presence.
Yes, they are competitive, but they are competitive, individually. They have the strong desire to be the best, but then again, is that desire of being the best is for the welfare of the student? – Enrique Adolfo C. San Juan, Bukluran Party
San Juan acknowledges the desire of the current SSC to win, but, on the other hand, they lack unity due to their political origin. He emphasizes that being united is vital in performing a specific goal.
“Madi-describe ko po ‘yung past administration [incumbent council] as building era, I guess, a building age for the pamantasan. - Vientree Zoe B. Santiago, Ang KAMPI
According to her, the duty of the incoming SSC officers is to improve what was started by the incumbent council and further explained that projects of the slate are the projects of the students.
Being on the same party, Santiago says that the current council is branded for accomplishing simple but result-lasting programs.
ON THEIR PLANSOf the three aspiring SSC
presidents, different plans has been laid based on their priorities, however, when it comes in establishing a student regent, they all find a same ground. Having a student regent to represent the students is a project that even past SSC’s of PLM had tried to achieve. Now, it is still one of the agenda of the major political groups.
A closer look on the SSC Candidates
I am very much willing to sacrifice myself and be an instrument kung anuman ang pangangailangan ng students.
Thessalonica Anne S. Cadiz, Ang Partidong Tugon
‘‘It’s a great challenge for me to be the Supreme Student Council President on my junior year given that I am competing with the most respectable people from different parties.
Enrique Adolfo C. San Juan, Bukluran Party
‘‘I believe that I need to step forward more than the way people see me superficially. Hindi lang dapat maganda ka lang, I mean you should use your beauty to influence others.
Vientree Zoe B. Santiago, Ang KAMPI

FROM THE PREVIOUS STUDENT COUNCIL
SHOULD BE EMULATED AND/OR IMPROVED BY
THE INCOMING STUDENT COUNCIL 2015-2016? BOK PARCE
Projects? Worth emulating? The current SSC can’t even make a stand about certain issues
affecting the students of PLM, that needs to change. We need a council who can UNITE the PLM Community and has the
voice, courage and principles to promote the rights and welfare of the students - Former SSC Officer 2004-2005 #UnitedPamantasan #Mismo#BosesNgPamantasan

YUMI CORTEZ, CMC
Honestly, Hindi lahat naramdaman ko. Maybe because hindi naha-hype ng maayos but I think the Pasko sa Pamantasan and Pag Love Mo yun
I suggest make it annual. Sana rin, mas mag exert sila ng effort to let the
students know the real situation of the university.
EARL SABIDO, CET
I guess what should they improve is making students of this university aware of its rules and regulation and also how can they help in the cleanliness and order of our school. Also they should have their new
twists of program for the entertainment of every isko and iska. They should leave
their own mark but in a positive way though.
STEVAN HUGH ALVARADO,CTHTIM
Honestly, I have not heard any of their projects
(excluding the foundation week celebration which is mandatory). I believe that
they should focus on 3 major problems in our university 1. Lack of facilities 2. Lack
of inter-collegiate exposure 3. Lack of support from the
administration. They should always prioritize the welfare
of the students.

“Ang batayan ng pagiging magaling ay ‘yung hindi lang pagpo-post sa Face-book o Twitter, dapat
visible ka.”
“I guess what we need is better communication
within the campus.”
“Gusto ko, bilang estudyante, makuha ko ‘yung mga
proyekto na dapat talaga sa atin ibigay.”
Para sa akin, kung ano ang nakalagay sa batas, ‘yun ang dapat manaig dahil
kung hindi susundin ang batas, susunod na lahat ng
kamalian ‘dun.
Para itama ang mga nagawang pagkakamali at para ibigay kung ano ang nararapat sa mga iskolar.
“Pwede ring mas kailangan namin ng posisyon para
matupad ‘yung pinaglala-ban namin, pero position is
just a name.”
“I have to serve. Gusto ko patunayan sa mga kapwa ko
estudyante, lalo na sa mga nakakababang taon na hindi dahil baguhan ka, dapat wala
kang pakialam.”
“Nandoon din ‘yung puso ng isang estudyante, para
paglingkuran ‘yung mga kapwa niya iskolar para masamahan sila sa isang mas magandang
taon, para sa isang mas magandang Pamantasan.”
“Binigyan ako ng opportunity na magkaraoon ng voice,
siguro ito na ‘yung time ko to make a change before I graduate. A student leader, they are brave, they have
knowledge.”
“Ang gusto kong ipakita ay ang progressive ebolusyon, kung saang process na nag-i-evolve tayo into much better, much better until
we become perfect, even though na walang perfect council, walang
NEWSFebruary 2015 Pre-election Issue Ang Pamantasan 03
Lack of funds and support from the university’s administration prevented the Supreme Student Council (SSC) from implementing all the programmed activities in the 2014-2015 school year, but the president of the student body claimed they had succeeded in putting forward the welfare of all PLMayers, fighting for greater representation in the Board of Regents.
At the start of their term, the SSC, based on its General Plan of Action (GPOA), had 26 programs throughout the school year, but only nine activities pushed through from June 2014 to February 2015. A new set of student leaders will be elected into office this month.
SSC President John Rapid D. Canonizado, a senior mass communications student, blamed the lack of support from the university administration, led by former president Artemio Tuquero, for the student body to implement all its programs.
“Hindi naasikaso ang programs from the month of September to October,” Canonizado said in an interview with AP. “Unang-una, hati ang suporta ng admin sa SSC. One of the proofs is when the admin sued me. Patunay na hindi suportado ng admin ang SSC or at least, ako.”
Based on its General Plan of Action (GPOA), a total of 26 programs were planned for the two semesters this school year, namely: (1) 49th Founding Anniversary Celebration; (2) Rock Back to School Concert; (3) Araw Ni Mother Earth (ANIME); (4) Organization Fair; (5) Launching of B.A. G. and S. D. F; (6) Launching of the University Wifi connection; (7) Food Stalls; (8)
Launching of 10, 000 hours; (9) Premier Organizations in PLM (POP); (10) Financial Statement Seminar; (11) Open Audit; (12) Mr. and Ms. United Nations; (13) Stress Buster; (14) OUTREACH; (15) Launching of Online Enrolment; (16) Outbreak Mission; (17) Paskuhan sa Pamantasan; (18) Christmas Gift Giving; (19) Launching of Alumni ID; (20) PLM Awards; (21) Student Leadership Training Seminar; (22) Iskolympics; (23) Pag Love Mo; (24) Halalan 2015; (25) Graduation Ball; and (26) Youth Sona.
ON THE SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHED PROGRAMS
But, only nine of these programs were completed. These were the 49th Founding Anniversary Celebration, Rock Back to School Concert, Launching of B.A. G. and S. D. F, Launching of the University Wifi connection, Food Stalls, Launching of Online Enrolment, Paskuhan sa Pamantasan, Student Leadership Training Seminar, and the Launching of Alumni ID.
SSC began its term with a big bang with the holding of the 49th Founding Anniversary Celebration in July 19-21, 2014. This 3-day celebration consisted various programs such as Elite Fashion House, G. at Bb. Pamantasan, with the presence of food stalls around the campus.
In August, the SSC held the Rock Back to School Concert to welcome the students back to school and staged the launching of B. A. G. and S. D. F., a program which caters to provide financial assistance to scholars in need.
“ Maraming es tu dyante ang nangailangan at natulungan. Hindi lang estudyante kundi konsehong nangailangan.” Said SSC President John Rapid D. Canonizado in an interview
with AP.The SSC also began the Alumni
ID, Online Enrolment and University Wifi, which Rapid said was ‘partly accomplished’. “Nilalakad na namin ang papel and we are tapping the administration,” he added.
ON THE 14 UNATTAINED PROGRAMS
Then, the controversy started and 14 programs failed to takeoff, namely Araw Ni Mother Earth (ANIME), Organization Fair, Launching of 10, 000 hours, Premier Organizations in PLM (POP), Financial Statement Seminar, Open Audit, Mr. and Ms. United Nations, Stress Buster, Outreach, Outbreak Mission, Christmas Gift Giving, PLM Awards, Iskolympics, and Pag Love Mo.
Canonizado explained that the main reason of inability to implement majority of their programs is the internal conflict existing among the officers and the lack of support from the administration during former justice Tuquero.
Among the activities that fell victims during these tumultuous months were the Launching of 10, 000 hours, Premier Organizations in PLM (POP), Financial Statement Seminar, Open Audit, Mr. and Ms. United Nations, Stress Buster, and Outreach.
As Tuquero faced a leadership crisis, the SSC struggled to implement its projects, like the Araw Ni Mother Earth (ANIME) that caters to raise awareness of the Earth’s current environmental condition. Originally set in August, Canonizado said the program was not implemented because they had problems with a live band, citing financial constraints.
He said the SSC tried to “minimize expense for projects involving concerts and parties.” It was the same reason why the Outbreak Mission was cancelled.
Organization Fair, an activity held every year, was not organized this school year, due to “budget insufficiency, available venue and support from the administration”, Canonizado said, adding the PLM Awards and Iskolympics were also scrapped for the same reasons.
PLM Awards, aims to recognize different individuals who excel in various fields such as media, education and the like, was supposedly on December. On the other hand, Iskolympics is an event that launches different recreational sports activities, joined by officers of college student councils.
ASSESSMENT ON PROGRAMSCanonizado said the student
body may not have carried out many activities but claimed success because of his centerpiece program called
“Laban para sa Student Regent”.The SSC President said he was proud
the current council had fought hard for the PLM community to have a student representative to the Board of Regents.
“Lahat ng problema at sentimiyento ng mga estudyante ay hindi naririnig dahil we don’t have a representation at BOR,” he said, emphasizing the importance of the program.
He also defended the council’s decision to oppose Tuquero, seen as the worst program of his council, which led to the deterioration of relationship between the administration and the student body, dividing the student leaders.
“Kahit sinasabi nilang hati ang SSC [dahil sa partidong pinanggagalingan ng bawat isa], hindi ito nangangahulugang hindi kami gumagalaw as SSC,” he said.
Canonizado, however, gave the SSC a high score of 8 out of 10 rating when asked to assess the performance of the student body this school year.
“Binawasan ko ng dalawang puntos mula sa 10 dahil una, hindi nabuo ang konsepto ng pagsasama sa konseho. Ikalawa, hindi naipatupad ang marami sa programang nakatala sa GPOA,” he said.
MESSAGE FOR PLMAYERSCanonizado said he hope the
PLMayers will look at the student’s body performance, not on the quantity of activities but the quality of its performance for the entire school year.
“Sana huwag i-assess ang konseho sa kung gaano kaganda ang Foundation Day o kung gaano ka-bongga ang Paskuhan. I-assess nila kung gaano naging katapang (ang SSC) para tuparin ang trabaho nila bilang boses ng mga estudyante,” he said.
This what he had to say to aspiring campus leaders who are seeking elective positions this month.
“Congratulations dahil tinanggap ninyo ang hamon ng pagiging estudyante-lider sa Pamantasan. Lagi niyong tatandaan na maluluklok kayo sa konseho hindi lang dahil magbebenta kayo ng lanyard, hoodie o shirts, o di kaya nama’y mag-oorganisa ng events.”
He also thanked all the PLMayers who supported him during his term.
“Salamat dahil lagi kayong nagbibigay ng magagandang mensahe sa akin para maging inspirasyon ko sa paglaban sa lakas na pumipigil sa tunay na adhikain ng SSC”, he added.
