As you may recall, Connections for Life opened in the Gardere Lane area twelve years ago as a non-profit organization to help women without homes or jobs make a better life for themselves and their children, including homeless and battered women and those recently released from prison. The program pays for the women’s first month’s rent and utilities and furnishes the apartment with donated furniture and household items. Then the women are assisted in finding jobs, so they can pay their own rent and begin to pay back the program - so it can help more women. Today, the program is doing well, funded by grants, donations, and support from several area churches. All donations are tax deductible. Be sure to provide your name and address with your donation if you’d like a receipt. LIFE TOGETHER Dear Friends, Two week ago I arrived back from San Jose, California and the annual meeting of the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions. At this national meeting of Liturgists, various topics are considered each year for learning. This year the topic was Understanding Liturgy in a Culturally Diverse Community. Here is a definition of culture that may help: system of inherited conceptions expressed in symbolic forms by means of which human beings communicate, perpetuate and develop their knowledge about and their attitude toward life. My experience in San Jose was an immersion in a rather different world----at least that was my impression at the time. During the liturgy we celebrated at the San Jose Cathedral, we experienced Vietnamese Drummers, Korean women with incense, a Mariachi Band, a Samoan Choir, the use of English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean, Tagalog, Greek and Latin. It seamlessly created our prayer, and carried all in the assembly whether we understood all the words all the time. One of the issues with celebrating Mass in a culturally diverse community is that we often place too much emphasis on use of a variety of languages. However, some cultures are not cultures who rely on the printed word for communication. There is a simple maxim that applies: if you want to be able to pray in a culturally diverse community, one has to come to know something of the various cultures outside of church. When I think about our Parish community, I know that we have among us the presence of Vietnamese, Korean, Latinos, African Americans, Indians, as well as Irish, Canary Islanders, French, Germans, Italians, Scottish to name a few. I want to do some conversations with the Staff and the Council on how we can explore in a more intentional manner the various cultures that make us who we are. On October 11th the Church observed and celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Opening of the Second Ecumenical Vatican Council in Rome under the leadership of Blessed Pope John XIII. So much of what we take for granted in our Church life today takes it’s dynamism from the results of the Council and the courage of Pope John 23rd and the world Bishops who were determined to have the Church enter into the world with relevancy and hope. For instance it is a result of the Council that Catholics are allowed to attend funerals, weddings and other significant events in Protestant Churches or in synagogues. We are encouraged now to participate

in interfaith worship and social action. We are encouraged to read and study the Scriptures with the help of modern Catholic biblical scholarship. The Laity and the ordained share in a common Baptism, and all are called to holiness. The Laity are to be included in the life and mission of the Church because of Baptism. Before the Council the Priest did almost everything during the Mass; the Mass was in Latin, with little encouragement for the Laity to participate at the Eucharist. The priest celebrated with his back to the congregation. People went to communion infrequently, usually during Eastertime. People prayed silently during Mass. The Council brought about a new understanding and an organic renewal in Catholic worship. The primary source of the Christian Spirit was the full, active and conscious participation of all at Mass. The Mass was to be celebrated in the language of the people. All were encouraged to receive Holy Communion as often as possible, under the forms of Bread and Wine. Liturgical ministries were established. The Bible was central to Catholic worship, with Catholics hearing more of the Bible of a three year cycle than any other denomination. For four years the Bishop’s met to consider what is the nature of the Church, how will the Church worship, what is the Church’s belief about human and Religious freedom, our relationship with other’s who believe in God, the call to Religious life, the governance of the Church. These and other issues were not without controversy—but the fruitful-ness of this good work still bears for us in the Church 50 years later. Nothing of the essential nature or beliefs of the Church was changed in any way by this Council, as asserted by some in the Church today who view the Council as a rupture from the Church of the past and even accused this council of heresy. On the contrary, Pope Benedict called the Council a “Council of Reform” noting that “It is precisely in this combination of continuity and discontinuity at different levels that the very nature of true reform consists.” While 50 years ago seems a long time to some of us, the work of the Council is not yet finished. Many of its significant documents are not fully understood by most of the Church, and much of the vision of the Council has not yet been implemented. Also, on October 11th, Pope Benedict opened the Year of Faith for the Church in the world. This can be an opportunity for us to understand, perhaps for the first time, the spiritual riches of the Second Ecumenical Vatican Council. I am working with the Adult Faith Committee on ways in which we will be able to restudy together the documents that came from the Council, so that these spiritual riches will be, as Pope John Paul said “a great grace and sure compass by which we take our bearings in the century now beginning.”

Year of Faith October 2012 – November 2013

Pope Benedict, in declaring A Year of Faith, has asked us as Catholics to strengthen our faith and draw the world to faith by our example. The Pope has also asked us to study the lives of the saints as part of this Year of Faith in order to follow the examples they set for us.

St. Isaac Jogues, SJ St. Isaac was a missionary and one of the North American martyrs who traveled from France to the new world after his ordination. In 1641, he and his companions were captured by the Iroquois, who tortured and killed most of them. He was killed with a tomahawk in

1646 and canonized in 1930. St. Isaac Jogues, pray for us!

FINDING GOD IN YEAR OF FAITH SERIES TO BEGIN

“Finding God”: On Sunday, November 4th, our parish will offer the first in a series of presentations aimed at adult Catholics to help deepen our relationship with God during this “Year of Faith.” Our Diocese has designed a series of seven sessions, which most parishes will be offering over the course of the coming year. These sessions will be built around a video presentation and discussion of a topic related to deepening faith. This first presentation will be entitled, “Finding God” and will be held in the school library from 9:45 to 11:15am. Please take advantage of this opportunity to deepen your relationship with God during this “Year of Faith.”

CROP Hunger Walk November 4th, 2:30pm

The purpose of this 2 mile walk is to raise awareness and funds to make a difference in the lives of hungry and impoverished people locally and around the world.
