    CHAPTER ONE.Claimbers lost his girl.

Claimbers was waiting in line- some others were there too, at the big Gethep Industries, the one that was incharge of delivering Synthetic Personnel to Hospitals, Military Installations and now, for one time only, to thepeople who was previously chosen by the Royal Central Computing System- a imitation of some otherInstitutions in Brana One and also in Aurea communities. But in Knapp things were different, as the Royal Institutions had different ideas, and were delivering cheapSynthetic personnel just for the propagandatrying to get the recognition from other societies of the Cosmosas a developed civilization. When he finally arrives to the desk where a woman was receiving the orders, Claimbers said: Claimbers.

Number 39022.20 And puts her right arm under the green light of a bulb that was hanging over that desk.

The machine makes a sound, and the woman looks unto a console, and said: Testis Obabus Claimbers. All

right, you have the Synthetic assistant number KB 390.D. Room forty five.Thanks. Where is that, lady?- Claimbers asked her, and the woman indicated with a finger out of the room, saying: By the corridor, fifth door to the left. Thanks you.- Claimbers said, receiving a plastic chip the size of a nail. He looked on the faces of the peoplein the row- the most of them shows happiness- yes, because to get a Synthetic person was unheard off not amonth ago. Synthetic persons were for the rich people only, and that was going on from decades ago.At the corridor, some people were complaining about the slow attendance they were getting, and of course, hearrives to a line of people in waiting- forty four before the entrance to that room. He puts in line, waited fortyeight minutes, and then it was his turn.Inside the room, a pair of men in uniforms looked at him, takes the chip and inserted it on a black machine.Testis Obabus. 39022.20. Right. Youll had to wait. There are no more Synthetic persons for today. - A mansaid, after looking at a console. But I had waited all morning here, and now you said I must keep on waiting! - Claimbers reclaimed.Sorry, Mr. Testis, but you know this machines are expensive and we get to have much care with them, so we

brought them in a reduced number in here. Go home and wait for us to call on you.- The man said, givingback the chip. This is pure bad luck.- Claimbers said, very disappointed.Sorry.- The other man said, smiling as it was a joke.At the corridor, some other people were also complaining not to have received the promised Synthetic Person,

and Claimbers said to them: They will call on me, in the future. Yeah, right, chum! You could bet on that. And laughed. Others were saying that the Gethet Industries wastaking all the rest of the Synthetic personnel for their own use.Claimbers went out of the building and into the street- he felt a mixed feeling of disappointment and a internalreassurance that he was on his own from day one. No gifts for him, no matter how official it could be the

promiseHe returns to his flat walking by the street, not willing to take a pneumo-tube but the moving ways only- heneed time to think. At the rented flat was waiting Bowar, his fiance, the superb woman that was so interestedin to get one of those Synthetic persons to be helped with! Now he must tell her to wait! The disillusion ofher will be great! At last, he arrives to the apartment and opened the door, using his fingerprint on the lock. And ?- Bowar asked, trying to look at someone at the back of Claimbers. But there was none. And what happened, where is the Synthetic machine?- Bowar asked, in a shrill voice.

They run out of stock! They told me to come back later- they will call me for that.- Claimbers said, lookingat the nice woman in a pink robe, half seated on a high stool near the bar.She moved her head sidewise, and asked again. So you dont brought the Synthetic home?As I told you, there were no more at the Gethet Industries.- Claimbers repeated, and she sighed, looking atthe floor and then again to him: This changes everything, Testis!! I was sure you had a Synthetic, and nowthey are saying you must to wait. In the end, I am sure the Gethet Industries will keep those Synthetic forthemselves, as they are a greedy company.Who knows? And the State must had been in this, as in other things, seeing that those Synthetic people willarrive to thepeople.- Claimbers said. She didnt reply and went immediately to the bathroom, where soon the shower apparatus was in function.Claimbers smiled, thinking the lady was disappointed, but the reaction was not as bad as he was thinkingbefore. He went to buy some cheese at the nearest shop, to take in their breakfast and when coming back, Bowar wasfinishing his make-up.Ah, you are ready to leave?- He asked, smiling.Yes, I have some work to do at eleven oclock- some photographs to see, a lunch with the Director andBowar was saying and Claimbers interrupted, saying:- But we were going to lunch at Diffors, remember? Yes, but I received a phone call and my work always comes first.- Bowar said calmly.Very well, then well be seeing tonight.- Claimbers went to the kitchen, where he prepares the breakfast, but when returning to the bedroom, she was already gone.Fine! She is mad at me.- Claimbers said, returning to the kitchen, where he consumed his breakfast.

That afternoon, Claimbers were working at the Bakery, where he was the baker, and at 20.00 hours, he returnsto the apartment, with some kilograms of bread for her and his girl. But he had a big surprise, when seeing therooms almost naked of furniture, and all the dozens of clothes belonging to Bowar were gone. He went downto the Concierge, asking about what happened in his flat. The fat Gomerge, a man of fifty years, said: Thedame takes all their belongings from your flat, with the help of several persons specially dedicated for thatmatter lets see Moving Furniture Company.- If you have some complaints about it, call on them. Icould serve you as a witness. The eyes of the man were worried, and Claimbers was embarrassed so he said: The lady Bowar leaves the

apartment, surely because she dont want to see me anymore. Very well, and yes, I saw her leaving. She was seemingly very happy.- Gomerge the Concierge said.Claimbers went up to her flat in the elevator, and clean the apartment with some teardrops- he was sure thelady was never to come back again- all because he earns little money and because the Synthetic person, whocould had been a great help in every situation, was denied by the momentAfter he clean the floor for fallen objects and made a quick account of what was left- the lady had taken morethan half his belongings, perhaps thinking she owns himClaimbers didnt resist the urge to see her again, nomatter what happens next, so he run out and searched for the photo office where she usually works, andenters. He saw Juriams, the photographer, passing with a camera, and he asked him about Bowar.Oh, she hasnt come, man! I hadnt call on her, either. Sorry, but Im working now. - Juriams said, andClaimbers nodded- he went out again, and at the street he realize she was running away from him- well, hecannot blame her too much- with her body and beautiful face, she was really wasting her time with him, not

able to give her the luxuries she could attain very easily with some otherricher- person. The day was cloudy and a thin rain was falling, too faint to call it a rain- but it really moist everything. He walked to a pier, looking at the obscure waters- the smell of the sea weeds was strong in the air, and hestays there, looking at the sea and hearing the waves rushing under the pier a nice white boat appeared

coming from the East, and soon it was docking alongside the dock; three sailors throw a rope and one of themjumped to the pier, knotting the rope and securing the boat not to drift away- other ropes and other knots endsthe work a fat man in his fifties descended, carrying a large suitcase; he was using a unusual top black hat. When passing near him, the green eyes of the man give him a swift look, and then he said: Which way to thepneumotube, young fellow?Claimbers looked at the maze of streets some distance away, and decided he was going to help the old man,now he was returning again to the flat- so he said: Im going there myself. Follow me. Thanks. Im not from this town, although I know the place from old Im doctor Farthon. - and he looks athim as if his name was very well known, but no, Claimbers didnt recognize it, and said: Claimbers here.

They walked a block in silence, and doctor Farthon said: You look rather sorry for something, young fellow-what, are you penniless? Because I can offer you a job- not for too many time, you know- I get to give somelectures here, and then Ill go my way again- out of town and all-but you can earn some bucks, if you want. No, thanks you! I am working at a Bakery; night shift.- Claimbers said.Oh, but you can work for me, either way! Ill be giving my lectures in the morn ings! You only must to carrymy stuff, documents and things like that Three hundred sopes a day, what do you say?- The man offeredhim, and Claimbers was really tempted to say yes- he was not doing much in the day, except sleeping, nowthat his fiance was out of his life for goodAll right, Ill give you a hand! Give me the suitcase, for starts! - Claimbers said, and the doctor Farthonsmiled, saying: Well, lad, you really takes your time to decide! They arrive to the pneumotube, and once inside, the doctor pays the fare; soon they were going out, twokilometers away, and in downtown. Here it is!- Doctor Farthon said, signaling a building with a theatre in the ground floor; inside, the doctortalked with the manager, and Claimbers was now looking at some beautiful actresses and dancers, rehearsinga music play- some of them were smiling at himCome on, lad! Lets go to my Hotel now!- Doctor Farthon said, grabbing him by the sleeve of his jacket.Claimbers takes the suitcase, and follows him- not three blocks away, the Farmers Hotel was located, avery tall building with apartments and suits of every price you name it, and saw how the doctor had alreadybooked at it, using possibly a phone.Room Forty forty, Sir.- The man in charge said, after the Doctor Farthon placed his thumb on a plasticsquare. Farthon smiles and said. Now my finger its the key for my room!

They takes the elevator, and at room # 4040 they went inside, after unlocking the door- it was a huge fourrooms apartment, with a small kitchen and a big bathroom. The doctor inspected the rooms, saying: Twobedrooms and plenty of space to stay! Claimbers saw a modern holographic set and other new appliances, and smile for himself- now he hadnothing to learn about the news, with Bowar taking every electronic appliance with her.Say, where are you lodging, lad? Because you could stay here, as long as I am in town- I will not use theextra dormitory in any way- too old to have an affair myself!- Doctor Farthon laughed, with a parrots soundin it.Thanks, but I have my own flat.- Claimbers said, proudly. Doctor Farthon gives him a swift look, and said:Yours or rented?Rented.- Claimbers replied. You can leave it for a time- you economize the money from the rent! I will be in town at least for a month.-Dr. Farthon said. Thanks but no thanks! I rather be at my place.- Claimbers said, shaking his head sidewise.Very well! I will need you from eight to sixteen hours, every day! Perhaps sometimes later- I dont knowexactly how is going to be my schedule at the Philocosmic! And now we are here, Ill take a nap! You can seethe news or a film, if you want. Doctor Farthon said, walking to the first bedroomClaimbers seats in front of the holographic set, and begin to see a film about an adventure on the sea Soonhe was asleep. All right, lad! Enough for a nap! Lets go to the boat, now!Doctor Farthon said, awaking him. Claimbers

went out with the doctor, seeing now it was raining all right; they went to the Pneumotube, and traveled backto the pier- at the boat, the doctor was helped by the sailors while taking a lot of stuff out of a cabin. A Flytaxi was called to take them and the stuff to the Philocosmic function room, and at a dusty room they lefteverything. Claimbers waits him while the doctor had another conversation, this time with some more people, and when returning, he said: this is going to work! I have four lectures this week! Hope you dont fail me!

Lots of slide to put on the machine, and some holographic too!Ah? Well, youll had to teach me how to use those things!- Claimbers said.Dont worry! We have a day before the first lecture! - Doctor Farthon said, and Claimbers went to work forthe nightAt the next day, early in the morning (As Claimbers went directly to the Theatre) Doctor Farthon receiveswith a joyful: Hey, you really are an early worker! Fine, because there is a lot to do! Look! Two projectors -your work, after all is under way, its to see that this babies didnt stuck! But if a slide didnt come out, youjust press this red button, and then the green one, and youll see it starts at the same point of where we were.

The computers were very old and tattered, and Claimbers said so. Doctor Farthon laughed and said: Apartfrom what I mentioned, there are more reliable to me than the new tablets they are selling today! Furthermore,Im accustomed to the old ways.Claimbers realized, too, that the old ways were in a mood with the old ways the doctor exhales for everyporeAt ten oclock a fat man come into the theatre, saying: Oh, but you are here already, good doctor! Fine!People are going to appear around here very soon! Eleven oclock, isnt it?Yes, Mr. President! As always, I am here to present my paleo files from old times pertaining to the UFOlore!- Doctor Farthon said. The fat man approaches, gives him a huge, and said: And I see you are not withyour three accustomed assistants! What was wrong with them?Oh, they get lost in our last voyage! But I had a message from them, saying they are all right and in their wayto here!- Doctor Farthon said, smiling, and adding:- By the way, this young fellow is Mr. Claimbers- apasser-by transformed into my first assistant! Glad to meet you, lad! Im Alfredo, the president of the Philocosmic Club! A club that for centuries had beenreleasing information about UFOs. Nice to have the doctor here.- The man said.Fine.- Claimbers said, smiling. The president and the doctor had the same strange attitude when talkingabout UFOs, whatever that meansAt eleven hours, just as Mr. Alfredo said, the theatre was full of people, everyone looking glad to be there andstaring at the old doctor, who was talking with four people in a row. Later, the President said: Calm down,

you people! Lets hear our motto now!The crowd chanted: Philocosmic Club, Philocosmic Club, the one and only chaser of UFO in the world! After that emotional chant, that was repeated seventeen times, the President said: We are here gathered once

more to hear our lecturer Doctor Farthon_Climbor rambling on old files about UFOS!

The people laughed and applauded, and then Doctor Farthon Climbor signaled to Claimbers to start the slideprojection, and said: Dear associates and members of the Philocosmic Club! Let us hear the paleo files Igathered for you in this last ten years! And the first slide shows a lenticular body flying through the sky, producing a whistling sound- the voice ofDoctor Farthon was now saying: This is a UFO Search and UFO Chronology:Jan., 1967 Dr. James E. After the lecture of this data, Dr. Farthon takes a glass of water and said: And with this, dear associates ofthe Philocosmic club, I ended my lecture for you. There was a very long row of applause, and the people stayed, as there were other lecturers, but doctorFarthon takes his gear, helped by Claimbers, and taking a Flier taxi, he went to the Sturgeon Hotel, wherethey dumped all the cargo on a nice suite.Well, that was all! I am getting old! In previo us years, I could talk for hours in a row! But now I get tiredafter the first dozen words! - Farthon said, taking a bottle of liquor and pouring some in two glasses; hehandled one to Claimbers, saying: this are not strong liquor, so we could take a glass or two without gettingdrunk.Thanks. Nice site you have in here, Doctor!- Claimbers said, looking how big and nice the suite wasdecorated.Yes, its a nice place, but for only two days more! The Philocosmic Club pays me with this while I give the

lectures, and then I get to pack and go! Tomorrow in the morning we have another lecture, and thats all! The

extra day I assume its only for relaxation.- Doctor Farthon gives a half laugh and added: I assume I amsome kind of a paleo-researcher for them!Pardon if Im wrong, Doctor, but this thing about UFOs sound to me like alien spacecraft invading the air

space of a not too evolved civilization!- Claimbers said.Yes, of course! The twenty century Earth! A time of wars and persecutions, where everything could happen, and did happen! There had also a flower revolt, something very peculiar, too! - Dr. Farthon said, adding:-Your wages will have to wait! This people from the Club are very generous to me, but they did pay when allis donned! So we had to wait for a better celebration! And with that Claimbers knew he had to go out, and because of it, he said: I guess I can come here to fetch

things tomorrow?Oh, no! Just meet me at the Club at nine oclock! The people of this Hotel help me greatly with this stuff! And I had no need to give them even a tip!- Doctor Farthon said, closing the door after Claimbers walks outthe suite. At the corridor, he smells the air: a fine perfume pervading it all, giving strength perhaps with some

steroids in the air?He went to his flat, and sleeps the day away- he gets to be ready for his night shift at the Bakery After the work, he went to the theatre, finding Dr. Farthon there with his stuff almost in place- three othermen were there, looking busy. This is my new assistant, men! Mr. Claimbers from Oxiborion! He helps me yesterday, while you werelooking for a means of transport!- Doctor Farthon announced. The three men stared at him, saluting with abow.

Good to know you.- Claimbers said, and helps in the final stages of the work- then, the Doctor Farthonsaid: You will see I have a lot more slides to show the people today! I get to impress them with photos, as

with real news I cannot!- And he chuckled his own ironic words.Well help with the sounds and the colored lights!- A fat assistant said, adding: Hi! My name is Curly these are Moe and Larry. All right.- Claimbers said, realizing the men were amiable and not in the least bothered for hispresenceAt eleven oclock the President appears, saying: Oh, I see you have four assistants today! I guess the

presentation will improve!Yes, thats the idea! And for the same amount of money! Doctor Farthon said, making the presidentblush. At eleven the Theatre was half full, perhaps because this were new people- or perhaps because the first lecturewas not as good and word spread out Farthon said: Ladies and gentlemen from the Philocosmic Club! Iam here again to present you the famous files of old! And lets begin immediately! And the slides come out, showing first a flying saucer, and some alien beings. The voice of Dr. FarthonClimbor was heard saying:November 1961 - A strange flying object streaked across the skies above the Theodore Goff farmon the afternoon of the 18 th and left behind it a mysterious substance that defied explanation. The strange, seemingly metallic substance, came off the UFO in thin fibers and settled to earth, draping itself like a finely-knit shroud over Goffs fields, trees, machinery, and power lines. The farm is located nearChadron, Nebraska. It was about three oclock, Goff related, and I had been working in my shed. I came

outside and happened to look up and see this strange Ball flying through the air. It was kind of rough andseemed to be rolling as it sped through the air. It was going faster than any airplane I ever saw and itjust disappeared from sight when it got out of the sunlight. It made absolutely no noise.Big chunks of it broke off and these fibers began settling down on everything. The ball was about as bigaround as a tractor tire, four feet in diameter or so and it came out of the southwest going northeast. At first Ithought it was an airplane but when I really looked, I just didnt know what to think. Its hard to say how highup it was, maybe a thousand feet or more. The fibers cannot be seen with the naked eye except when they arein direct sunlight. Then, and only then, can you see them glistening ghostlike in the sun. They can be felt onthe skin like spider webs, but they are much smaller in diameter than a spider web.A human hair seems like a rope compared to the fibers.I didnt really notice the fibers much that day, but the next morning my fields and trees just glowed with thestuff when the sun hit them. You can pick one up, but you cant really tell if you have one unless the sun hits

it just right. Its the strangest stuff I ever saw.

Attempts to break the weird strings were to no avail. They seemingly could not be broken apart, but, when ahot cigarette was applied to one of the strings, it did break. The string did not, however, burst into flame orseem to burn.Theyre so fine you just cant tell when youve got one, Goff said. You can feel it, but you cant see it.October 1965. James Townsend, 19, a Long Prairie, Minnesota radio announcer, had a close encounter with aUFO and three creatures about 7:15 p.m. on October 23, 1965, on a blacktop road about four miles east of

Long Prairie, as he was driving his 1956 model car around a curve in the road. The announcer for radiostation KEYL said that as he came around the curve, he saw an upright, rocket-like object straddling the road.It was about 30 or 40 feet high and about 10 feet in diameter, and seemed to be resting on legs or fins, he

said. My car engine stalled, the lights and radio went out, and I slammed on my brakes. I stopped about 20

feet in front of it. My first thought was to knock it over with the car so I could have some evidence, but theengine was stalled. Then I got out with the idea of trying to push it over by hand. When I got to the front ofmy car, three creatures that looked like individual tin cans on tripods, and were six inches tall, came frombehind the rocket. They didnt have eyes that I could see, but I knew they were looking at me. I stopped. Ididnt have any desire to get closer. There was no soundjust dead silence. It seemed like ages, as welooked at each other. Then they went up into the rocket, which had a bright colorless light glowing out of thebottom. There was a loud hum. The rocket went up and disappeared. When the light on the bottom went outafter it was in the air, my car radio and light came onand my engine started without having to touch thestarter. Townsend said his car has an automatic transmission, and he had placed the selector lever in park.Townsend, a non-drinker (I dont believe in it as a Christian.), said his heart was pounding and his legswere like rubber. I drove 90 miles an hourback to Long Prairie to report what I saw, but I wondered ifpeople would believe me. I was sure of two thingsthe rocket (it towered above the trees along the road)was a spaceship of some kind, and the three objects that came out of it were creatures like nothing else in the

At the Flier taxi, the doctor was saying: Well, folks, that were all! Now we must prepare to go to Oredloro!Four lectures there, for the Amianto Club of the Unknown. Never heard of them, but they are offering me agood chunk of money, and this are no times to disdain a sope.At the suite, with the gear near the door, Doctor Farthon gives a glass of mild liquor to everyone, and said, rising his glass: To us!They drank and Moe said: Good you are strong and fit for this work, Doctor! Your lecture of today was avery interesting one. Thanks, lad! Well, Mr. Claimbers, you get to wait for tomorrow! Your wages arent here - but I am sure thePresident will come this afternoon to pay me! This gentleman always did the same thing: first the lectures, then the money! To others, I dont permit it! There are some scoundrels that make you sweat for a sope, andthen they disappear when they get to pay!Very well, I was glad to be of help.Have a nice afternoon. - Claimbers said, not waiting for more of thatmild liquorAt the street, he realized he was happy to be of service to the old man- lecturer of old tales in strange lands!UFOs! A wild name for an elusive matterAt his flat, he worked cleaning the floor and rearranging the scant furniture it was left after the departure ofBowar Then, he drinks a glass of milk and went to sleepThat night and at the Bakery, he was looking at the machine revolving the dough and when ready, the samemachine begins to cut and locate the bread in the oven- one hour later, the whole bread production was underway. He takes a bread to taste it, and he finds it all right- he eats four more breads while he was working with

new doug, and thats was the reason he didnt eat meals at home (or anywhere else). He feeds only onbreadand milk.At nine oclock he arrives to the suite of hotel, and Moe opened the door for him, saying: The doctor is ill! What? Something that he eats?- Claimbers asked him, walking inside the suite. We dont know! The Hotel doctor is coming soon.- Curly said, walking out of a room. Claimbers looked atthe doctor, who was green at the face, and saying: Oh, Im dying! Someone knocks at the door, and Moe opened the door- it was the doctor.Good morning, gents! Where is the dying person?- Said the doctor, a thin small man in his forties, wearinga green suit. This way, doctor!- Moe said, and the medic produced a new kind of scanner, where lights and a smallscreen were visible. He hummed for a while, and said: Its his liver! Nothing that I cannot mend! And producing another electronic gadget, he made a few passes over the stomach, saying. DoctorFarthon Iam sure you are feeling well now.

Oh, I am dying!- Farthon said, but he was losing his green pallor. No, you are not! And for the next time, dont drink too much! Its a doctors advice for your own good.

Dont you worry to pay me now- my bill will be included at your rent.- The doctor said, matter of factWhen the doctor was out of the suite, Farthon stands up, raise his arms and said: Good as new! But I wasntgoing to show that man my recovery! They are a bunch of proud gooses! They laughed, and the doctor said. Come here, lad! I have your money in my trunk! And he opened a trunk and taking a wad of money, he separated a thousand sopes, handling it to Claimbersthat takes it in his hands, doubting his eyes. Then he said: But doctorFarthon, this is too much for a coupleofdaiss help! Guess with the half ofit will be all right! No, dear fellow! You serve me right when most needed! Take it as a gift, if not a payment! - Doctor Farthonsaid, smiling- Claimbers saw the other three assistants smiling from the door, too.So, Claimbers pocketed the money in his trousers, and said: Well, then I am available for the next time youneed an assistant!Doctor Farthon Climbor smiled, patted him in his shoulders, and said: Go in peace, my friend! Claimbers handshake every assistant, and went out of the suite, feeling the thousand sopes in his pocket agood amount of money for a very small workWhen at his flat, he hid the money on a light fixture, and sleeps the rest of that day. At two oclock of the nextday, he arrives to the Bakery, and Mr. Gerdug was at the side of the door.Good night, Sir.- Claimbers said to the boss. Gerdug patted him on a shoulder, saying: You dont workhere anymore, lad.But why, Mr. Gerdug? Im not late!- Claimbers said, looking at the clock- he was right on time. No, its not that, Claimbers! Its only that I will not require your presence here anymore! You see, a relativewas passing a bad time, and I hired him just to help him go again in his tracks! You are no relative, so I

cannot prefer you. Here is your pay for this month- if you count the money, youll see Im giving you a niceextra payment, to show I am not a greedy man. Good night.Claimbers takes the money and puts it inside his pocket, as in a dream- fired! That means a lot of trouble hewas not going to analyze right now! He headed for the next Bar as in a trance, and seating on a stool, he askfor a drink. The bartender said: Take it easy, lad! Whatever happened to you, its not the end of the world! So its showing it all around me?- Claimbers asked, taking a sip.Yeah, lad! You have no tears in your eyes, so its not a love affair! Did you kill a man or lose your job?-The bartender said, while mopping the bar.The last one. I was an honest baker till now. - Claimbers said, now showing some tears.Come on, bakers are needed worldwide! Youll get another job, pal!- The bartender tried to raise hishumor, and went to attend another drifting customer A man slams a satchel next to his place on the bar, saying: A strong whisky, bartender! And make it quick! The bartender moves his head and serves him a shot of whisky, saying: Take it slow, chum! Claimbers looked at the man- he was in his sixties, using an old jacket and blue pants; his shirt was white withred lines, and the satchel was a huge one, possibly full of documents.Hey, what are you looking, pal? Do I look strange to you?- The man said, pointing at him with the glass. You look rather common, man! Take it easy!- Claimbers said, moving in the stool to be on guard- the manseems to be on edge.Oh, a very common man I am! So common that I have the secret of the ages with me in here! - He said, showing the satchel- it was a very common satchel, some thirty odd years of age, with a replacement here and

there.Yeah, it looks rather outwordly.- Claimbers said, and the barman chuckled behind the bar; the man looks atboth of them, saying: Oh, you dont believe me? Ill show you! And he produced a photoinserted on a plastic cover- showing some diagrams nobody understands but thestrange man.See? A nuclear plant! Cold fusion! Thats what its in here.- The man said, expecting some recognition inthe eyes of his listeners, but there was none.Do you know about cold fusion? A very remarkable thing it is!- The man said, with a booming voicenobody takes in serious.I guess is a bogus idea.- Somebody said from a table, where several men were smiling at them, ready tohave a laugh on the quack. The man with the satchel turns to them as bite by a snake, and said: An excess heat observation is based onan energy balance. Various sources of energy input and output are continuously measured. Under normal

condition, the energy input can be matched to the energy output to within experimental error. In experimentssuch as those run by Fleischmann and Pons, a cell operating steadily at one temperature transitions tooperating at a higher temperature with no increase in applied current. In other experiments, however, noexcess heat was discovered, and, in fact, even the heat from successful experiments was unreliable and couldnot be replicated independently.A man at the table said: Ifhigher temperatures were real and not experimental artifact, the energy balancewould show an unaccounted term. In the Fleischmann and Pons experiments, the rate of inferred excess heatgeneration was in the range of 10-20% of total input. The high temperature condition would last for anextended period, making the total excess heat appear to be disproportionate to what might be obtained byordinary chemical reaction of the material contained within the cell at any one time, though this could not bereliably replicated. Subsequent researchers who advocate for cold fusion reported similar results. The man with the satchel went there to keep on talking science and the barman blink eyes to Claimbers, saying: Bogus science, pal! Dont pay attention to all what you hear. Yes, I get my own problems to solve.- Claimbers said, asking for another drink. He was ready to go out, and pay. Then, at the door, the man with the satchel catches up with him, saying:Bunch of ignorant! They are stuck in old ideas!Claimbers reaches the street, and the man keeps at his side, saying: Im sure my experiment works - I havebig plans have a minute? I have something to show you.Claimbers looked at him, very suspicious the man was a loony bin, but the satchel guy said:-Im a fulldoctor, you know? I am Willamfor Deretak! The inventor. - And produced a card; Claimbers reads it, andsaid: Very well, you are Willamfor Deretak, but I am sorry, I had never heard of you.

And it would be very rare if you do! I kept my secrets for myself! Some other people publicize their findingsin order to get money from people or organizations, to keep on experimenting! With this engine that I hadalready at my disposal I am sure a submarine could travel far and away!Claimbers steps unto a moving ways and the man follows him, saying: I need a good assistant for the

completion of my project. Do you feel capacitated to act as such?- And the shiny face of the man has a pairof lunatic eyes on it.It all depends of the wages you want to pay me.- Claimbers said, remembering he was out of job now.Ah, of course, money! I could pay you eight thousand sopes for the whole period of time that this first

voyage should take! No more than a couple of months, perhaps less.- Willamfor Deretak said. Two months.- Claimbers mumbled to himself- four thousand sopes per month- not at all bad, seeing that hehas no option I accept. But of course, this mustbegin with a little money from your part, an advance-because if we are going to sail away, I must buy some things first, pay my rent in advanceOf course, Sir! By the way, I need your name and address, to make things in the proper order. - Deretaksaid, and Claimbers gives him a card with his personal identification.Very well! Meet me tomorrow at eight at pier Eight, and youll see the submarine - lots of work to be donnedthere, but well manage!- Deretak said, going away with his satchelClaimbers smiled- the man seems to be a little wacko, but that was OK with him; money was the thing that hewas after and who gives it was of no great importance. He eats at a cheap Restaurant some scrambled eggsand rice, and after half a bottle of native wine, he went home, in peace with himselfEarly the next morning, and after a sound sleep in years, he stands in front of a feeble looking passageway

made in parts of metal, others (the missing parts) in wood. Ahoy! - He yelled down, and at the turret a greyfigure appears, a black man. What do you want?- The man asked, and Claimbers said: Call on Mr. Deretak! I have an appointment withhim today!Wait!- The black man said, and disappears inside the turret. Twenty minutes later, Claimbers begin to thinkthe Negro man was ignoring him and calls again- several times, but now the man just didnt appear, or plainlyhe was too deep into the machine to hear his hollering. At noon he stands up and begin walking, hoping Mr. Deretak could appear in any minute to welcome him andreassured he had a real job, but nothing of it happened and Claimbers arrives to his flat, one hour later, scorched by the sun he takes waiting at the pier. He decided he will never again believe in the word of astranger, especially in a BarHe seats on the verge of the bed, and counted all his money. He had 1500 sopes in all, so he went out andbought a cheap radio, to hear music and the news. At a park, he seats and listened the radio; the news were

that the Queen Girardot was buying new spaceships for the fleet, and that the outer worldly societies werebringing lots of new inventions, among them, the Transporter, a device that sent the atoms a-flying any waythey want, transporting goods and people instantaneously. He was listening when he saw a man with a satchel coming by a bend, and he recognized Mr. Deretak and hisfirst intention was to flee, but the man already had spotted him from afar, and was waving his hands in aridiculous way. He stands up and salutes.Good afternoon, Mr. Deretak! I was there, but you werent visible! Deretak blinked his eyes, and then he said: But I told you at eight! And its only six oclock! Claimbers sighed, not willing to believe his eyes, and said: But the day has twenty four hours and the eight

hour is in the morning, Sir!

Sorry, dear fellow! I forgot your name. Claimbers.Yes, Mr. Claimbers! Sorry about that! But I am going there myself now! Lets walk together! I am sure yousaw the submarine, and what do you think of it?Its a dark long submarine, I am sure it is in good shape. Yes, in good shape! But without the engine! I have my invention somewhere else! I need to assemble it onthe submarine- I already talk with a company- tomorrow they are going to begin the works!- Deretak said, and Claimbers begin to believe in the man again a misunderstanding happens any dayAt the pier, Deretak goes first by the ramp, saying: This old ramp is in need of replacement! But I had littletime for details! And the ramp was swaying and creaking; Claimbers waits until the man was on the

submarine to traverse the feeble ramp and at the boat, he felt the swaying produced by the waves.

Up the turret now! Beware with the steps- there is always some oil in them.- Deretak said, climbing with hissatchel hanging from a cord around his neck- this time Claimbers was sure that Mr. Deretak was a verypeculiar manThe Negro was waiting at the main cabin, where the periscope and the other artifacts of control were located;he was a small man with a black beard, dark brown eyes and a smeared T-shirt and blue pants, using a pair ofstrong shoes.Urgo! All is fine here?-Mr. Deretak asked him, and the Negropointed at Claimbers, saying: He was hereasking for you.See? Just like a dog! He should have told you I was coming here at night! Well, Urgo has a thick brain! Asyou see here, we have all the illusions of an engine working somewhere, but no, the diesel engines wereextracted two years ago- I sold it for my experiments! No need of those, of course! My new device is a lotstronger!I congratulate you, Sir. You have a fine submarine.- Claimbers said, thinking that without a proper engine, the submarine was a worthless thingYou can sleep in here from now on! No need to waste your money paying a rent somewhere else! The

engine will be arriving very soon, and of course, you will be helping if necessary. - Claimbers said, and theywent to see the cabins- there were small and smelling to oil, and the air was nothing but pure. Claimberssaid: I prefer to keep on living at my flat, if you dont mind. All right! But you must be here from eight to sixteen hours! Six days out of seven! I presume the engine willbe in place and working in ten days- from then on, well be sailing.- Mr. Deretak said, rubbing his hands

Very well, Mr. Deretak. Something you want me to do right now? - Claimbers asked him.No, but tomorrow you must be here at eight! And I will give you some money, as you must be prepared tomove at a moments notice- pay the rent, and sell your furniture, because in here I cannot allow any of thosethings- the submarine is very crampy, as you saw.- Deretak said, and gives him two thousand sopes.Claimbers went out into the air and across the ladder with smile- money in advance! So the guy was reallymeaning what he said! And he was going to be a sailor, of all things strange! At his flat, he organize his clothes, his four pair of shoes, and the scant furniture he had, and he was sure itwas not worth a sope, so he decides to leave it all in their places, so the renter will be deciding what to dowith them, after he leaves But he was not going to tell the man a word about his leaving until the endHe takes the money into the secret box, and went to the street, to drink some beer and talk with the bartenderat the bar Ogutar, as part of his daily strife Hey, you look better tonight!!- The bartender said, smiling and placing a whisky in front of him; Climbersreplied: Yes, I have a job and I am going to sail the sea in my new job!

With that guy who talk about cold fusion?- The bartender asked, blinking an eye.Yes, with him! He is paying good money, and he already gives me an advance.- Climbers said.Well, if he gives you money in advance, the guy goes straight! Perhaps destiny is written in Bars- you arenot the only one who finds a good job in front of my eyes.- The bartender said, while going to attend anotherclient. Climbers finished his drink, and wave his hand in a good bye salute, and went to the street. Yes, he hadfound a job and he was going to sail in a steel coffin with a madman At the next day he went to Pier 8 and soon afterwards a team from the Hoker Incorporated appears, bringing with them the engine- it was not a single object, but several and soon it was plainly seen that thespace inside the submarine for that engine must be enlarged.Mr. Eborin, the engineer, said:- Sorry, but the torpedo bay must be occupied as well.Well, I!- Mr. Deretak was in doubtOr are you planning to launch torpedoes to someone?- Eborin the engineer asked him.Er. No, of course not now, butIf we dont enlarge the space for the engine, we cannot properly set it in place. - Eborin said, adamantly.Very well! Do what it must to be donned!- Mr. Deretak said, exasperated because of this change of plans. This will cost you some extra money, Mr. Deretak! We need to cut and reinforce, we cannot just cut and

throw out.- The engineer said. All right! Money is not a problem.- Mr. Deretak said, confidently.Four days they take them to alleviate the submarine from all the torpedo tubes and cables from that section, avery difficult task due to the small space where to work. Claimbers realized that all of that work could havebeen evaded if Mr. Deretak could have bought a ship instead of a submarine. After three months, the engine was tested. The engineer Mr. Eborin said:- Very well! Your engine works andall systems are functional. Now you must test it under water. Our work, by the way, ends now.

Of course, Mr. Eborin, I know the rest of the operation runs by my side. - Mr. Deretak replied, happy to seehim no more giving orders. At the office, the Secretary told me to give you this.- And he handed a tablet to the owner, adding: Goodbye, Mr. Deretak. And the note was detailing every item the technical team had donned in the submarine, the hours of work atthe different phases, and the whole work amounting to 2.230.000 sopes; 1.200.000 original estimate plus thecutting and throwing costs more than the original estimation. That night, at Mr. Deretaks office at the submarine, there was a reunion- the Negro man and Claimbers werethe only audience. Deretak said: This note says I must pay another 1.030.000 extra sopes! And I will not payit! So we are going to sail as soon as we can.Claimbers sensed a void in his stomach when hearing some illegality was going to be committed- he detest it,because after the illegal action appears the lawyers, the police and ends with a cage where the trespassers endstheir trekI have no more money than what I had already expended. No more money means you are going to work forme only for faith! I assure you we are going to make a loadful of money, just traveling far and finding the potof gold that always is rewarding the efforts of the ones who dear unveil the mystery! And I mean: I amoffering you adventure and rewards.- Deretak said, in a hollow voice.Count with me, master.- The Negro said, in a husky voice; Claimbers detected a spark of faith in his dogstare. And you, Mr. Claimbers, go to search your personal belongings, because I want you here at eight in the

morning, to sail away!- Deretak said, looking at him.Very well, Mr. Deretak; Ill be here at eight! - He replied, standing up from the chair; once at the pier andwalking, he was thinking if it was good or bad to accept the challenge- once in deep sea, there was no wayback at all. He arrives soon to the apartment, and takes some of his clothes in a pair of bags; the rest of thebelongings were going to be left there for the benefit of his landlord; he looks unto the papers and stuff he wasnot going to see again, and he went to bed, after a hot shower, with the sensation ofimpending doomAt seven oclock he was ready- he takes the bags and went to the concierge, saying to the man, who wassweeping the floor: Good morning, sir. I am leaving for a trip - take the keys of the apartment. The man didnt understand, and ask for a repetition of his phrase, and then he realizes he was going for good,so he became nervous and jumpy- saying: _ But did you give the proper notice to the owner? Mr. Ogbramis going to be upset! You should have stated this situation with him with the proper time! Sorry, but I had to go. Bye.- Claimbers said, leaving the edifice by the corridor- he was now sure he shouldhad left open the door of that apartment without mentioning his departure- he detest to be lectured, specially

by a simple janitorAt the pier 8, he saw that Mr. Deretak was at the turret, looking in his direction; when at ears shoot he said:

Mr. Claimbers, please hurry up! Claimbers jumped on the submarine, and when at the turret, Deretak said: I had obtained the permissionfrom the maritime authority to leave the pier , but a friend of mine phoned me that the Hoker Inc. guys are

trying to put me in quarantine until I pay them all the money I debt! So we are leaving right now, before itgets too hot!Certainly. Claimbers said, thinking that the quarantine will be waiting for him the minute he docks again at

the pierThe Negro man was standing at the side of the engine, waiting. Mr. Deretak seats at a console, saying: As Iam not much of a practiced man, you better seat and strap on the chairs! This could be a jumpy ride! And soon the submarine begin to move slowly out of the pier- there was a bay with some big ships anchoredthere, so Deretak had a tough time sorting the objects until they were out of the Sadams Bay and into theCongelatum ocean- the now captain Deretak said: All right, sailors! We are now at the ocean, and well bemoving along the coast of the Eins Continent- on the surface! Mr. Claimbers, come here and see how I guidethis magnificent submarine! For the next four hours, they were diving and surfacing, changing directions and making a series of essayswith the engines, starting with the reverse and ending with full thrust Eighty knots! A good kind of velocity, dont you think?- Deretak said while at it, but Claimbers was not sosure, as the entire structure was complaining, with shrill sounds and bumping echoes. He said

  • 7/28/2019 KNAPP 28 Original - Copia

    14/72

and said: Well, perhaps eighty knots is all what the hull can stand! My engine could go on and on, untilsmashing the camshaft and makes havoc with the main axis, but money could only buy this old submarine inan auction! Perhaps at our return I could be able to buy the best hull in the market! Or better still, to design anew model and then ask the shipyard to build it for me! Claimbers was certain that Deretak was a day dreamer of the best kindThe sea was shining with the sun (in fact, Knappian star) and there were some big creatures flying andcapturing fishes near the coast. The white on the crest of the waves were foam cups that sometimes fly overthe rocks, splashing like egg white matter- the swaying of the submarine was notorious when traveling on thesurface and Claimbers felt sea sick very soon. You look green! - Deretak laughed, when looking at him at the turret. The wind was mild and Deretaksighed, saying: I, the great inventor, forced to search treasures on a submarine, instead of to be maintained asa wise man by the state! Others, with less intellect and capacities, are favored nowadays with a good rent, anice home and a car! Me, I need to grab all those things with my nails! I am sure we could find treasures, Captain.- Claimbers said, giving him the title of captain as long as theywere on the submarineYes and why are you so sure?- Deretak asked him.Do you remember the old tale about the gnomes? Those people who fought us and almost defeated our Army

in the old days? There was a king, Noito- Claimbers remembered him. Deretak moves his head in thenegative, saying: Gnomes? I dont remember that tale from my school days. Well, I was at a private school-. Perhaps I learned more than you at a fiscal high school.- Claimbers said,

proud of his better education at his younger years- of course, he did not go to the University, so he endedbeing a baker onlyGnomes of old. And what, they had silver, gold, precious stones or what?- Deretak asked him, not happywith that last remark of his second sailorGold. They said he had a palace with gold tiles on the roof. Who knows? Perhaps we could find his roof inthat direction.- And Claimbers pointed to the northAnd how could we recognize the site? Deretak asked him.A river. We must see a big river splashing into the sea- the first one we see, that will be the one.- Claimberssaid, in a whisperVery well, you will watch the coast for the next three hours - then, I will send Urgo to take the second shift.-And Deretak descended by the stair into the submarine The weather was sunny but the wind wasincreasing- it was cold, up the turret, and Claimbers catch a cold in there before the three hours term Urgo appears as a shadow, and stands at his side- Claimbers said: Very well, Urgo- if you see a river, just

call our captain.Urgo didnt answer, but takes the binoculars from him and looked at the coast with his black eyes withoutsaying a wordDown at the submarine there was heat and the smell of oil was faint now that the new engine was in function-this one didnt smell at all by nowNo rivers yet, Captain.- Claimbers said, yawning.Go to sleep, first officer! I need people with all its senses on the ship! - Deretak said, with imperative voice.Claimbers went down the corridor and stepped onto the small and crampy cabin and closed the door- he wentto the small bed and only with his shoes off begin to snore a moment later The submarine was attacked by a Mosasaurus, 30 meters long, weighing 1.500 kilos and very hungry. Themetallic structure of the submarine resisted, but the crew was badly injured. Doctor Deretak broke his left legand Claimbers an arm; Urgo gains a bump on his head.Full throttle!!- Deretak growled, and the submarine speeded up to eighty knots, leaving the furious andangry Mosasaurus behind.Damned luck!- Doctor Deretak said, bandaging Claimbers arm, who at his turn bandaged the doctors legas best as he could.A month lost for us! We will be confined here for at least a month! No way could we heal the bones beforethat! Medical tricorder was a bit too high in price for my scant pocket.- Doctor Deretak said. They find a bay where to rest the submarine and in a boat Urgo went ashore to explore for them.We could see through this device in his cap! Certainly not the best way, but its the available thing by now. -Deretak informed his only crew member. At the screen, they saw how Urgo arrives to the shore in his rubber boat, and how he was pushing it out of thewaters.

The surrounding area was full of rocks several meters high, so Urgo climbed them to see what was after them-crustacean was on all of the rocks, telling the tide was going to climb up in the night Urgo climbed up, finding more rocks, but after that, threes and the foliage of the jungle.A nice looking place!- Deretak said, looking at the screen11There were also some dinosaurs; Urgo walked west guided by a compass and he encounters CelofisiosLanasaurus, and Parasaurolophus: none of them were carnivorous and Urgo takes distance from them just aswell, because an herbivore protects its eggs if necessary and any intruder represents a threat for them.Urgo returns to the submarine four hours later, having covered twenty kilometers in all; they secure the boatinside, after deflating it.Plenty of animals, turtles too-big ones, good for to make soup!- Urgo said, seating at a bench. He wastranspired and smelling to oil.It was a good recognition trek! No need to go again- tomorrow well fish.- Deretak said, moving hisbandaged leg.You better lie still, chief! Illgo fishing. Urgo said, looking grim for some obscure reason, the Negro mannever smile.Really? Well, I guess I must lie still or Ill be a lame duck in the future. - Deretak declared.12The submarine was anchored but it gives a jerk. They went up the turret, and from the sea there were comingbig waves with the tide.

We better leave this place, or we will end banging unto the rocks! - Claimbers said, so they take the anchorback and using the engine, they went out to open sea.The night was clear and they keep on going north at a very moderate speed- Urgo was on the turret all night, looking for the coast and at dawn he went to sleep, replaced by Claimbers. There was an internal telephone,so he could talk with Deretak, who was at the controls.Do you see ariver?- Deretak asked him.Not yet, Captain, and theres a lot of fog, but I can see the coast. - Claimbers said.At noon, they stopped near a sandy beach and Urgo went on the rubber boat to search for fruits Deretak wasfeeling pain on his leg, and Claimbers remains at the turret, using a hat.13He saw several slim fishes at the waters, and attached several lines with hooks to the submarine- two of thembites the hooks and he was able to take them to the kitchen, where Deretak fried then with glee.At midafternoon Urgo returns with a cargo of fruits and stayed out fishing until dark.

Eighteen fishes and eight kilos of fruits in a day! Pity we havent a freezer! We must eat the fish ortomorrow it will be rotten meat.- Deretak said. That night Deretaks leg was looking very swollen and Claimbers waits the man was a sleeping and he turnsthe submarine towards Oxiborion- then he speeded it at full throttle, navigating under the water and by thecompass. At dawn, he surfaces and look from the turret- the Saddams Gulf was almost passed by, so he calls on Urgo, saying: The Chief is in pretty bad shape! Help me arrive to Oxiborion, or he dies without proper medical

assistance.Yes.- The Negro said, and with his aid, he docked to the pier #3 and told Urgo: Help me take him out!14They find Deretak in a soporific state, so they had to hail him as a dead weight-. Once on the dock, Claimberscall an ambulance, that soon appears, the medic saw the leg, asking:- What happens with this man?We bumped unto a Mosasaurus while being on a submarine at high speed! With the crash, I broke my armand the captain broke his leg.- Claimbers said.Let me see.- the medic looks his arm, adding: You better come along too, buddy! We must to see thebone is healing at the proper direction.Urgo: take care of the submarine while we go to the Hospital.- Claimbers said, and the Negro accented witha movement of his head. The Flier Ambulance carried them swiftly to the Royal General Hospital- hours later, and after being treatedwith a Tricorder, a medic said:- You can go now, Sir. Your bone is soldered together but dont exercise it toomuch at the next three days.15And my friend Deretak, how is he?- Claimbers asked him.

He has some fever, and we relocate his bone and some veins that were in the way: nothing serious, but hehad to stay here for a couple of more days.- The doctor informs him, so he walked out of the Hospital withhopes. He travelled using the moving ways, and at the pier he comes into the submarine, with Urgo, who had beenwaiting at the turret. The Chief is going to be well in a couple of more days! Urgo- he still had fever but his leg was curedproperly.Yes.- The Negro said, simply.Tomorrow I will go see him! You can go with me if you like. - Claimbers announced.No.- The Negro replied, and went up the turret to retire the ramp that gives access to the submarine. He alsoslept on the turret, wearing a club- in case some burglar tries to get into the ship.Claimbers slept at his cabin and at eight oclock the alarm of his wrist watch awakes him.16Time to go seeing the chief!- He said to Urgo, who was still on watch.Tell him to get well. The Negro said. I will.- Claimbers replied, somewhat in surprise. At the General Hospital, Claimbers found Deretak at a bed (#301) recently breakfasted and cleaned.Good morning, Captain. Claimbers saluted him with the nautical title he deserves. What am I doing here? I was surprised to see me at a Hospital bed without realizing it! Did I was too ill?-Deretak asked him.

You were unconscious and here they told me you risked losingyour leg! Fortunately, we werent too far and the engine works fine. - Claimbers said.So you brought the submarine: remember they could get it!- Deretak said, worriedly.Your life was more important.- Claimbers remembered him- soon afterwards he went out, and walked bythe streets aimlesslyhe ends up at the bar Ogutar so the bartender looks at him and said:- You are backfrom your sailing? I was embarked, but the captain gets ill and we are back in town while he gets well. - Claimbers informedthe man.Oh, the destiny is always giving us surprises, isnt it? Here! A whisky on the house! - The Bartender said, putting a glass in front of him. After several drinks, he went outside; people were now scarce in the street, due to the cold air- he used themoving ways and then walked to the pier. The Negro man was making guard, and after he gets to thesubmarine, he takes the ramp from the dock, saying: Thereare two guys lurking around.

Robbers?Yes. We better keep watch.- Urgo said, Claimbers went into the submarine, trying to find something betterthan a knife, and he found Deretaks gun at a drawer; he puts six bullets in it, and takes some moreammunition into his pocketthen he went up with a blanket. The lights on the pier were showing the smeared concrete of the floor, and dark shadows where thepassageways started inland.18At three in the morning, six men were walking by the docking yard, approaching to the submarine. Theystopped at the verge of it, and one of them said:_ Ahoy from the sub! We want to speak with you! Claimbers replied:- Who are you and what do you want?We are workers and we want to make a deal with you! But come nearer; we cannot talk hollering to eachother!-. The same man said.Go away! We want no business with you!- Claimbers said in response; after a couple of minutes, someother man said: Call your captain! We now hes in trouble! The Chief is not in trouble!- Urgo said, and some of the men laughed at him, while others appear with twoladders. Here they come! Claimbers said, and begin firing. Two, three men stumbled to the floor, while thecarriers of the ladders run to the submarine. Claimbers recharged the gun and when he fired, one of theladders was already in place- Urgo runs out the turret and begins slashing with his knife.19Claimbers discharged the rest of the bullets into the crowd, hitting three of them. As there were many othersarriving, he closed the upper hatch, started the engine and moves the submarine away; five minutes later, hedives.

By the radar he was guided until he left the dock behind, and after three kilometers he ascends, gun reloadedin his hand, opened the hatch and looked around, with the aid of a flash lamp. There were no signs of people on the deck. Claimbers was sure, now, that the Negro was killed by the mob,and the best thing was to wait for the morning light where the submarine stands now.He awoke at the turret, and there was a lot of fog, so he waits for it to disappear with the heat of the morning. At eleven oclock it was visible at a distance of a hundred meters, and in those hours he keeps on thinking inwhat to do next. Practically now, he was the general Administrator. If he went back to the pier, the mob couldbe waiting to make problems. Deretak has two or more days at the Hospital so he cannot count with him.20Claimbers decided not to return to Oxiborion, but to sail away, preferably to the Zvei continent, where ordersof capture were not in place, and the submarine could be his without anybody denying it.He studied the sea charts of navigation, and decided that at half speed he could be arriving to that continent inless than a week, or more if going at 20 knots. While traveling on the surface of the sea, he collected every trash can, filthy clothes and garbage he couldfind, and tossed by the rail- then he scrub decks and the Negro and the Captains cabins, that had lots ofrubbish and used papers and stuff- he also find white powder at the Negros cabin, possibly drug to get high. The captain has a metallic box that he opened with the use of a wrench- 82.000 sopes were in it, and someiridium rings that could be of value at a pawn shop. He puts it on his own bag, happy not to be penniless asbefore. The food stock was low, but he has plenty of fresh water. He decided to go fishing at night, so he begins

taking a nap between eighteen and twenty hours each day, in order to be refreshed by night. He saw two giant creatures of the sea not fifty meters away that day, but he just keep on going at the samevelocity (13 knots) and the beasts were soon left behind. That night he throw the lines, and get five big fishes, that he cleaned up on the upper deck with a machete, and then he uses the stove several times, while he waspreparing a fish soup, that he was stowing at big pots not to waste any. Afterwards, he eats as much as hecould, before it gets stale with the passing of the time. With good food, water and the engine buzzing, he begin to feel very happy, and the voyage has only goodweather ahead and no incidents , except once a fish almost throw him overboard, when struggling to be catchout of the water. He gets a scar on a hand but with the sea water it was soon cured. He found hydrogen peroxide jets at a compartment- possibly as a signal in case of sinking or enginemalfunction? He tested two of them, launching them from the outer deck, and the missiles soon were lost inthe sky, leaving a smoky trail in white.22

Days later, he saw the dark figure of land ahead; he decreased velocity and paid more attention to the radarscreen, just in case there were rocks underneath. He waits until daylight and begins searching a city going tothe right (south) of the Zvei continent. He saw several pterosaurs and Archaeopteryx flying low over the sea, fishing silvery fish.Four days later, he finds a fiord, and using the sonar he traveled several hundred meters inland, seeingPodoquesaurs, Retosaurs and a rare Ortomero. He searched for a camera finding none, so he decided to buy apair of them at his next opportunity. He anchored the submarine with two anchors and using the zodiac (Knappian version) he went ashore- blackpebbles all around- and next to it, the jungle. He uses the revolver to try to kill some animals to eat, but only killed a huge rodent, that he left intact, afraidto get some infection- the animal was a dirty one, with large yellow teeth and smelling to pork and mud hedidnt identify it by name.At his return by the forest, he find fruit trees, and eats some, but not much, as suddenly appeared threeStegosaurs Ungulatus, eating at the same kind of trees. That night he was for hours on the turret, hearing the trumpeting of giant animals and the smaller sound ofinsects. At dawn, all was silent and quiet. He moves the submarine around and find two brontosaurs Excelcius fishingin his path, so he stopped and waited for them to move away, thing that happens at noon time. The sea was in full sight once he leaves the fiord, and plenty of Ichthyosaurus Communis were fishing nearthe coast; their large eyes looked at the submarine with curiosity. At sixteen hours he saw an aerial vehicle going to the south, and smiled- he was going nearer to the civilizedportion of the continent.

He detected another fiord going inland, and at its borders there were several Elasmosaurus fishing; they werevery swift in their movements and were as long as a fat snake, with their elongated necks and small buttoothed jaws were white saw-like teeth that shines across the water.A group of pterodactyls flew over the submarine and the Elasmosaurus in less than three minutes, as fast theywere advancing, helped by the wind.A sensation of peril assaulted him, so he fastened pace and soon he was making eighty knots on the surface. The weather becomes windy and clouded and soon after twenty oclock it begins a heavy rain. The wavesbecome menacing towers of salty water. Claimbers reduced the march to a mere four knots, and when a bigwave toppled over the submarine, almost turning it around, he submerges and keeps on going underwater. The movement of the waves did not exist anymore, and he gets asleep at the controlsAt three hours in the morning, the submarine had a strange turbulence, and then keeps on going. Claimberswere very nervous about it, and went to the engines section, revising indicators. In the morning the sea wascalmer, and at the first fiord he saw he went in; at clear and quiet waters he anchored the submarine and divedto see the propellers; there was meat around the axis; a full head was showing among the mass of flesh, andhe recognized the species: cuttlefish or Belemnite. With the aid of a long sharp knife and much exertion, hecleansed the propellers of all that meat that floats down to the bottom in white lumps. Several Eurypterus orsea scorpions suddenly appeared to eat the meat. They were crustacean with segmented bodies and a

pointed tail; at the carapace head they had two round eyes and at the sides it sprouts two pairs of longantenna-like appendices.Finished his work, he rest at the upper deck, under a feeble sun (star Knapp) and looking inland- not a clear

sight, as the borders of the fiord was constituted by rocky formations sixty meters high.At the cloudy sky he saw some flying creatures, too high to distinguish its species. He had now real necessity of fruits, but the fiord was too shallow to keep on going with the submarine, so heclose the hatch and went in the rubber boat by the waters until he finds a beach full of pebbles; there he leftthe boat and keeps on going with the revolver and two long knifes at his belt; he also carried a bag for thefruits. The jungle was three hundred meters away, and he soon find round fruits of a yellow color, that he eats andalso put on the bag; he returns as quickly as he can, afraid to see something bad could occur with thesubmarine, but no, it was there floating in crystalline waters as before.Once inside, he started the engine and went back to the sea, speeding East. At 4.00 hours he saw dim lightsahead, and as he was approaching, he saw how the land was across his path, and the lights were from a seaport: Lugner. He docked where he sees scant ships attached to the pier, and after tying ropes and anchored the submarine,

he steps unto the land using a small ladder. There were two or three people in sight, occupied on their ownboats, and he keeps on walking until he reach a wide street, where he could see Fliers and moving waysworking, and very few people around, as it was 5.00 hours into the early morning. He had with him a lot of money; he had to wait for the shops to open their doors; the first he gets into was abarber shop, where they washed his hair, cut his hair and shave his beard. From there he enters a clothing store where he renewed his trousers, shirt and jacket, and also the underwearand shoes. Then he said to the attendant: Please burn this old clothes for me.Yes, sir.- The attendant smiled, throwing the clothes into a trash can At a gun shop he had some hard time convincing the owner he was an honest citizen, because he had only hiscredit card with him- the attendant said: You should have the identity chip inserted on yourarm, Sir. I hadheard Oxiborians also used this artifact to identify themselves, and here in Lugner city is a must. Yes, but I have no chip in me! - Claimbers said, and he insisted until the owner accepts his version (of to bean honest man) and sold him what he wants: two pistols and a shotgun. The owner of the shop wrapped it conveniently and said: Very well, Sir, its 1200 sopes in all, plus 300 in

ammunition.Very well. Here you have.- Claimbers said, handling him the sopes, and walking out of the shop with hisparcel, he directed his footsteps to the next moving ways, but there were none- only Flier taxis, so he ask forone, pressing a red button on a metallic beam with a sign, and soon he was traveling at 200 meters high with amechanical driver, who said: To the docks. You dont know where, exactly, Sir? The number of the pier, perhaps? No, I didnt know exactly. Just leave me at the gates.- Claimbers said, and the Flier descended soonafterwards, leaving him on the ground; from there he walked to the pier that was the number three, and saw

three persons waiting near the submarine. He worked with the ramp, and when he was already on thesubmarine, one of the men said: Please, we want to have a word with you, sailor.Yes, tell me from there.- Claimbers said, not willing to trust strangers, although the people were lookingwell dressed. We are in search of a submarine to begin an expedition, Sir, and we wish to know if you could rent your ship

to us. We are members of the University of Lugner, and I am Mr. Shurion, the Dean, and this other twopeople are professors Gustavio and Mr. Agatob, the ones who will travel in the aforementioned expedition.Claimbers was sure this was a gift from heaven, as he was not having any idea of what to do with a fullsubmarine in his hands, and he could not live for many months without earning money, so he said: Yes, itcould be rented. Did you have some idea about the fare? The Dean said, looking at the other two: We had been asking for prices- no submarine to be rented, I amafraid, but at the ships they are asking us half a million for a month of use. We could raise the sum to seventhousand sopesnot many more, as we are in a schedule.-Very well and how many of you are going in this expedition?- Claimbers asked them.Four, perhaps five you see, there are two persons not sure of his presence in this expedition, so we are

going to tell you some time before the departure, that we wish to begin as soon as we could. - Mr. Shurionsaid, rubbing his beard.I find it acceptable. I will ask you half of the money before departure, and the another half when on board.

What do you say about it?- Claimbers said.Of course, it is acceptable. Money is not the problem we have some gear to carry on- and about the meals,

you should provide it.- Mr. Shurion said. All right, I am certain this could be donned as soon as you decide when to depart.- Claimbers said, shadowing his eyes with his hand, as the sun was shining brightly.Tomorrow we will be here again, Sir, to give you the money in advance, and to tell you when we wish todepart. By the way, your name is important in this transaction, as we must put this in writing before thedelivery.- Mr. Shurion said.Testis Obabus Claimbers, Sir. That is my name.- Claimbers said, not worried about giving his name, as itwas clean of any blame.Very well, Mr. Claimbers, see you tomorrow morning. Good bye. - The Dean said, and the others bowed inhis direction- Claimbers sighed, and went inside his submarine with his parcel of clothes and gunsWhen he went out again, after a brief nap, he went to a good restaurant and then to the red zone, where hespent the night with a lady. In the morning, he returns to the submarine, to wait for the people from theUniversity that appears there at noon; he invited them to visit the submarine and shows them the several

available cabins and then at the small dining room he said: This is what there is in here, Gentlemen. Howmany of you are going to do this trip?Mr. Shurion said: Only three members of our University, and a guide. Four persons, in all. We think wecould make the round trip in less than three weeks.Of course, you must tell me where you are going to go, because the trip at the price I told you is only athousand kilometers round- five hundred kilometers there, five hundred kilometers back. More than that, wemust talk about more money. Claimbers said, thinking that for the next time the location was the first thingto ask to a clientShurion looks at Gustavio and Agatob, who nodded, and he said: We are in good terms, captain Claimbers. The site is around the same amount of kilometers you are talking about, and to the north. Very well, I expect your first installment to begin buying food and other necessary things for the travel. -Claimbers said, and he received the money from Mr. Shurion, who said: Very well, captain Claimbers, infive days we are going to arrive with our stuff. Once the men went out of the submarine, Claimbers waits for half an hour to get out and went to put anadvertisement at a city cabin, asking for crew members for the trip: Needing an ex-marine preferablerecently demobilized or out of the marine, to man a submarine. He also learnt how much were their wages, per month: five hundred sopes each. He realizes he needs a pilot, acook, and someone at the engine room just in case something went wrong. That same afternoon eighteen persons come in response to the add: he saw five older guys with dangerouseyes, four youngsters with long hair and strange clothes, and nine where to pick up- two of them were exsailor women. He takes note of the names of each one, ages and what they know to do in a ship; to all of them he asked theircellphone numbers, saying: I will call you if you applied.

Make it quick, skipper! I detest waiting.- One of the old guys said, and others smiled at his demand. In front of him he had the list. Claimbers ruled out the youngster with the attitudes and the older because hedoes not want to quarrel with them afterwards- so the list comes to this:Miss Wanda Waage, 21Miss Luani Unbewunt, 22Mr. Knopfen, 19Mr. Undank, 23Mr. Zuruck, 23Mr. Anlehnen, 27Mr. Bohren, 24Mr. Zange, 30Mr. Traube, 31.

He calls on the two girls and to Knopfen, Bohren and Zange. That means 2.500 sopes per month. Hope these guys didnt takes more than a month in their expedition.-Claimbers said to himself30They arrive at the next morning; Claimbers show them where they were going to work, sleep, and what heexpects them to do, adding:- This is a voyage of exploration. Some scientists hired me to make this trip, so Iask of you the composure required while they are here.

Miss Wanda makes a pout and said:- Hope you could tell us how much are you going to pay us.Five hundred sopes per month. I cannot pay you more than that, due to the fact that this people are payingme not much money. Also, you will have a place here to sleep, food and water for the whole period of timeyou stay on board.- Claimbers said. They looked at each other and Traube said:- I stay, captain. I want aplace in your submarine, I love the sea.And then why do you quit the Royal Marines?- Miss Wanda asked him, with a sing song in her beautifulvoice.I thought it was easy to embark in a freighter, but they ask of you a lot of money to put your name on a list-and I never have enough money to pay the price.- Traube explained to the woman.31The rest of the group accepted the job in those conditions, and Claimbers said: Very well, you have untiltomorrow morning to come here with your personal belongings. Remember that this is a submarinenofurniture allowed on board.

They laugh at it and Miss Wanda said: Can I bring my cat? I am very attached to it. Of course, but I dont respond for his future- you must to take care of it.- Claimbers said, and they wentashore, smilingClaimbers went out, too, to buy sheets and blankets, soap, toothpaste, some canned food and fruits, wine. Hecomes back in the night hours, and he closes the hatch after retiring the ramp- and went to sleep. At seven oclock he was again in functions, and after rearranging the cabins for the scientists and crewmen,he went out to the turret- one of the sailors was already waiting at the dock, seated on a bag.Good morning, Captain!Nice day.- Zange said, and helped him to put the ramp in place; then he said: CanI come in, captain? I want to see my new cabin!Yes, come in!- Claimbers said, and he shows him his place- the man leaves his bag on the floor, saying:Well, captain, lets work! What do you want me to do? Wish you could go to the city and buy me some alcohol and other things in case of accident. ...- Claimberssaid, handling him a hundred sopes bill.Very well, captain- I know what to buy.- Zange said, leaving the submarine. Claimbers smiled, as theyoung fellow seems to be an honest sailor; two hours later he was back with a bundle and said: I expend onlyfifty sopes, Captain! Here is the money. And Claimbers pocketed it, and the first aid kit he left at the small infirmary, saying: pity we have no medic

in here. Not good that, captain! There is ordnance- you get to have one if you want to sail.- Zange reminded him, soClaimbers calls some doctors asking for their assistance, but the men asked more than five thousand sopes permonth, so he put an advertisement again: In need of a doctor at a submarine, one month out of town, scientific expedition to depart soon. Please contact at pier 3.

Four hours later, four men appeared, all applying for the job. Claimbers talk to them at his office (a crampedone) and they all want more than five thousands except one: Doctor Makematus, saying: Im old and I dont

search for a huge wage but a place where to stay unmolested- I hope you could consider me, captain. I servesin the Royal marines for ten years and now Im retired and with a nice pension of retire, but that is notenough- I need the sea air, the waves all around me. He was tall and with pale blue eyes, and a sound constitution for his seventy years of age- Claimbers said:You must show me your papers first, Doctor- and if you have them, count with this job. Ill bring it to you tomorrow morning- when are you sailing, Captain?- He asked, in a strange voice.Be here tomorrow! I will depart in three days, but you better accommodate before that day. - Claimbers said, and Dr. Makematus accepted the suggestion and went out the submarine with the othersNice doctor you get, Captain! Hope he come back.- Miss Wanda Waage said from the door. Claimberslooked at her beautiful figure, and said: Come in, and lets talk for a minute! How do you find your cabin? She closes the door, and said: And you, how do you find me?Just fine. Hope you could fulfill your duties.- Captain Claimbers said, sensing his heart was beating fast.Oh, yeah? I will begin right now.- She said, kissing him

    Chapter 2.Departure.

The submarine departed from Oxiborion and keeping course to the south, they arrive in eight days to the

Axis promontory, a sector where big boulders were to be seen. This is the place!- Mr. Gustavio said, from the turret. Are you sure, professor?- Mr. Agatob asked, looking at the site with doubts.Yes, the place is here, on this photograph of old-. The sea of Nigrita never had a gnome city, as I rememberthat city was on the last portion of a fiord or channel inland. - Agatob said with firmness.32Gustavio scratched his head, and said: Perhaps you are right, Mr. Agatob. Well keep on searching, then. Yes, for a fiord.- Agatob said, smiling crookedlySome twenty kilometers away, they saw a big channel going inland; the submarine was now surfing thewaves and goes until the depth was not more than 20 meters. Its not safe to keep on going, Doctor Gustavio. Well drop the anchor in here.- Claimbers said to thescientific, and to the rest he said by the internal communicator: Gentlemen: you are on their own now! Well

wait in here for your return.

Dr. Gustavio said to him:- I hope you reconsider your option, Captain! Theres a treasure down there!Perhaps we could find the treasure that the king of the Gnomes hid in this place! Come along with us andyoull not regret!Claimbers had already heard Mr. Gustavio talking about that treasure, but he was sure it was a delusion, andsaid so.Very well! You lost your opportunity to become rich! But perhaps you could grant your crew to be of help

and perhaps become rich!- Mr. Gustavio said. Claimbers calls his crew and said:- Dr. Gustavio and hisgroup of scientists are going to search for some treasure at the ruins of a city. If some of you want to helpthem in their quest and have a part of it, Ill grant the volunteers the necessary permission to go. The women quickly were saying no, but the men accepted to go, so soon the group commanded by doctorGustavio had new members on it.Claimbers said to the women: I am sure they will work to exhaustion with no results at all! Thats for sure! Those professors sound to me like a lot of day dreamers.- Miss Luani said, laughing, andMiss Wanda puts an arm on Claimberss waist, saying:- Well, guess well be alone for quite a long time! Not much! This expedition is paid only for thirty days and we have already wasted ten days! So they havejust ten days for all they want to do in here!- Claimbers said, knowing that the scientists perhaps could endpaying him some extra for the delay, if any.And if they dont appear in those ten days?- Miss Luani asked him.I will leave this place with or without them! I am no baby sitter. - Claimbers replied, decided to stay therewith lovable Wanda, who was still gentle and amusing to him; Luani was indifferent to him and they begintaking long sun baths on deck without much to say about anything34
