Welcome from the President,

I am personally honored to invite you to Kyoto, my home town, for the 23rd Biennial Congress of ISAPS. We are opening our Congress to the world of aesthetic plastic surgery. We are joined by the Japan Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, our local hosts.

The planning committees have been working on preparations for a superb scientific program and social events that truly represent Japanese hospitality. The Scientific Program Committee, headed by Dr. Kunihiko Nohira from Japan and Dr. Lina Triana from Colombia, is developing a diverse educational program involving invited speakers representing forty-five countries. We are especially honored to

welcome the 2012 Nobel Prize winner in Medicine and Physiology, Dr. Shinya Yamanaka, as the Keynote Speaker during the Opening Ceremony.

For the first time, we will include a half day program for Residents and Fellows on Sunday, October 23rd and a full day session entitled ISAPS Business School – both new features of ISAPS Congresses.

The social program will include special events nearly every evening. October in Kyoto is full of autumn colors and many festivals. Don’t miss this opportunity to visit Japan and experience the beauty of our temples, scenery, culture and friendly people.

Our Congress venue will be the Miyakomesse Convention Center. The Congress website has information to help you plan your trip to Japan. We look forward to welcoming our international guests to Kyoto.

Kyoto became the capital of Japan in the 8th century. It flourished as the center for Japanese politics, economy and culture for some 1,100 years, until the capital functions were transferred to Tokyo in the mid-19th century. There remain many temples and shrines in Kyoto that were built during this long period. Seventeen historic sites including, Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Nijo Castle, are inscribed as World Cultural Heritage Sites.

You may meet some ‘maiko,’ apprentice ‘geiko’, who walk in long-sleeved kimono in the Gion district, see the townscape characterized with popular 19th century style latticework, and visit the Nishijin where they weave traditional ‘Nishijin-ori’ textiles with vividly colored threads. The festivals in Kyoto are famous not only in Japan, but are also known worldwide. The three major festivals of Kyoto are the Aoi-matsuri Festival in early summer, the Gion-matsuri Festival in mid-summer and the Jidai-Matsuri Festival on Otober 22, which celebrates Kyoto’s illustrious past. Plan your hotel arrival well in advance if you wish to see this festival.

23rd Congress of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery 5

Keynote SpeakerISAPS is honored to welcome the 2012 Nobel Prize winner in Medicine for his work on Stem Cells, Shinya Yamanaka, as our honored Keynote Speaker. Celebrated in his homeland as a national treasure, Professor Yamanaka’s pioneering work has profound implications for the field of regenerative medicine and in particular our chosen field of plastic surgery. Plan to attend the Opening Ceremony on Monday evening to hear Dr. Yamanaka describe his journey to the Nobel Prize.

Shinya Yamanaka, MD, PhDDr. Yamanaka was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discovery that adult somatic cells can be reprogrammed into pluripotent cells. By introducing the genes of four factors, he induced the skin cells of adult mice to become like embryonic stem cells, which can become any cell type of the body. He called these modified skin cells, induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. This iPS cell technology represents an entirely new platform for fundamental studies of developmental biology. Rather than using disease models made in yeast, flies, mice or other animals, iPS cells can be taken from patients with a specific disease. As a result, they contain a complete set of the genes that led to that disease—representing a more accurate model for studying disease development and for developing new drugs and treatments. Dr. Yamanaka’s current research focuses on

ways to more efficiently and accurately generate cells resembling embryonic stem cells by reprogramming somatic cells. He seeks to understand the molecular mechanisms that underlie pluripotency and to identify the factors that induce reprogramming. In addition to the Nobel Prize, Dr. Yamanaka has received many awards and honors, including the Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award, Wolf Prize in Medicine, Millennium Technology Award, and Shaw Prize.

General Information

BanksBanks in Japan are normally open on Monday-Friday between 9am and 3pm. ATM machines are readily available and your hotel can change money for you at the registration desk. The exchange rate is usually best at ATM machines.

Car Rental & ParkingCar rentals are available at the airport, but are not recommended. Parking at the hotels is limited and there is a daily cost of approximately 1,500JPY - 3,000JPY.

Transportation from/to AirportKansai International Airport (KIX), located slightly over an hour from Kyoto, is the second busiest international airport in Japan after Tokyo. Transfer from here to Kyoto station on the “JR Haruka express” train, directly to your hotel in a shuttle taxi (MK Taxi Skygate & Yasaka Airport Shuttle), or take a limousine bus to the center of the city.

ClimateOctober has some of the best weather of the year: sunny and warm days are the rule, with cool evenings. Average temperatures range from 55-72 °F (13-22 °C). Chance of rain is less than 50% and the fall foliage is usually at its peak in the last week.

Currency Exchange RatesThe monetary unit in Japan is the Yen. The rate of exchange varies of course, but is about 108 Yen to 1 US Dollar or 123 Yen to 1 Euro. Travelers’ checks and foreign bank notes are exchanged by banks, official exchange offices at airports, or at hotels. ATM machines are readily available. Personal checks are not normally cashed by local banks.

Disabled FacilitiesIf you have a disability and require assistance, please contact [email protected] - 1-603-643-2325 or by attaching your requirements to the registration form on page 29.

ElectricityJapanese electricity is 100 volts, AC. In western Japan, including Kyoto, the frequency is 60 Hertz. There are no columnar-shaped plugs or 3-pin plugs used in Japan, but 2-flat-pin plugs are used instead. It is therefore advised to purchase a plug adapter and transformer beforehand.

InsuranceFor your own peace of mind, we strongly recommend that you obtain adequate travel and international health insurance prior to beginning your travels to Japan.

LiabilityCongress Organizers are not liable for personal accidents, losses or damage to the private property of registered attendees or any accompanying persons during the Congress. Please make your own arrangements with respect to personal insurance.

Program DisclaimerThe program is correct at the time of posting on the website, or printing in any publicity materials. Congress Organizers reserve the right to alter the program as necessary.

TippingTipping is not required in Japan for service in places like hotels, taxis, and restaurants. Fees for service are already included in the bill. It is alright to assume that tipping is not necessary at all when in Japan.

Travel DisclaimerIn the event of any travel disruptions, Congress Organizers will not be held responsible for any loss incurred by any registrant or family member either en route to or from the Congress. By registering for the Congress, each participate accepts full responsibility for their own travel arrangements and any consequences for themselves and for all accompanying persons.

Visas and PassportsMost travelers are admitted into Japan with a valid passport. However, not all countries are exempt from a visa requirement. Please check well in advance to determine if you will need a visa or not and begin your application process at least three months before the Congress.

Visa Documents - Invitation LettersTo allow us to assist you in obtaining any required visas or travel documents, it is essential that you complete the Congress registration using the on-line payment system and include a valid email address. Congress Organizers will process your registration and send a receipt of your payment. You can include this receipt with your visa application documents.

We cannot issue an invitation letter until you have registered for the Congress. If you need a letter of invitation to complete your visa application, contact ISAPS at [email protected] and type VISA LETTER in the subject line of your email. Include your name and address as they appear in your passport and advise if any family members will be traveling with you who also need a visa. Specify if the letter can include all travelers, or if your local consulate requires a separate letter for each visa applicant.

In the event that your visa application is not successful, you must advise the Executive Office by email at [email protected] by September 15, 2016 to receive a refund of your registration fee. No refunds for unsuccessful visa applications will be made after September 15, 2016.

Wi-FiIn Japan, you will find many Wi-Fi signals to enjoy browsing the internet. Most accommodations are internet-ready, but you might sometimes find a wired internet connector in your room. In such case, please use a wireless travel router. If your budget allows, hiring a mobile hotspot device at the airport is another good option. You can use it in any areas the mobile covers.

The Convention Center will have free Wi-Fi.
