This week we will be visited by the organizationHoly Land GiftsHoly Land GiftsHoly Land GiftsHoly Land Gifts which represents Christian Arabsin the Holy Land. Anyone who has studied thehistory of the area we call the Holy Land willknow that it has been torn by strife from long

before the time of Jesus up until the present day.At the beginning of the 20th century it was partof the Ottoman Empire, under Muslim rule justas it had been since before the Crusades in theMiddle Ages; but the defeat of the Turks, whohad sided with the Germans in the First WorldWar, meant that the British found themselvesresponsible for the territory they called Palestine. After the Second World War, in which sixmillion Jews died in the Holocaust, there was anobvious desire to provide a homeland for themand their own preference was that the homelandshould be the ancient land of Israel. The British decided that the problem of

having two nations in one area was too much for them to police and warnedthe United Nations that they would leave on May 15, 1948. It was then thatthe United Nations proposed a partition of the territory into two States,Jewish and Arab, with the historic capital of Jerusalem being divided betweenthem.

As you know, things have not been easy since then and it is almost impossibleto maintain a balanced perspective on the situation. Many people sympathizewith Israel, surrounded by large Arab nations which are largely Muslim andwhich, because of oil revenues, are very powerful. Yet one also cannot helpsympathizing with the Palestinians, driven from their homes as the Jewishpopulation has expanded and often denied basic human rights. People forgetthat many of the Arabs in the Holy Land have always been Christians, communities which go back to the time of Christ and which were neverdestroyed. However, now many of these Christian Arabs have emigrated sothat those who were once half of the population now make up only 2%.

Pope Benedict is so concerned about the remaining Christians in the HolyLand that he recently asked 72-year-old Archbishop Edwin O'Brien to movefrom the Archdiocese of Baltimore to become the Grand Master of TheEquestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem which is responsible forpromoting and defending Christianity in the Holy Land. Archbishop OBrienhas said The holy places where Christ walked and where monuments areestablished to recall his words, his death and resurrection, are now less andless frequented. Therefore we must as good Christians around the worldrespect that patrimony. Todays sale of olive wood carvings will help tosupport the 600 Catholic families in Bethlehem. They make their living by

carving these religious items to sell to pilgrims and tourists but now so fewpeople are coming to the Church of the Nativity that many of them areunemployed; their only hope is to send things to other countries forsale. Each year we support the shrines of the Holy Land throughthe Holy Places collection on Good Friday. Today we canstrengthen the people who worship regularly in those churches.Church leaders worry that without a living Christian presence, theHoly Land could become like a museum or a theme park. As theLatin Patriarch of Jerusalem has said, Only with the living stones, with people, with community, has the land a meaning of holy. It isnot a question of buildings and archaeology; it is a question of life. Please keep our fellow Christians in the Holy Land in your prayers.

November, beginning with the feasts ofAll SaintsAll SaintsAll Saints and All SoulsAll SoulsAll Souls, iscalled the month of the dead. Its the month when we make a specialeffort to remember those who have gone before us marked with the signof faith, particularly our family members, friends and benefactors. Wegive thanks for them and pray for them.

If you get envelopes you will find an All SoulsAll SoulsAll Souls envelope among them.If you dont, you will find spare All SoulsAll SoulsAll Souls envelopes at the back of thechurch. Write the names of the departed loved ones you wish to beremembered at Mass and, if you are able, make an offering. We willkeep all those envelopes close to the altar through the whole monthof November and remember them at every Mass. May their souls, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of Godrest in peace.
