HaMaggid

A few years ago, Adi was performing one of his favorite card tricks in front of his friends when he called out, “Abracadabra!”

After the show was over, I called Adi over hoping to impress him.

“Hey Adi,” I said. “Do you know where the word ‘abracadabra’ comes from?”

He shrugged.

I explained, “It’s a combination of a few Aramaic/Hebrew words. ‘Abra-ki-dabra’—-which means ‘I create as I speak.’ Google it and you’ll see.”

“Hm.” He responded and he went on to his next sports activity.

I tried.

If you google the roots of the famous magician’s words “Abracadabra,” you’ll see that scholars debate what exactly are the word’s roots.

But for our purposes, I’ll sum it up like this. When I speak, I create. Or, even more succinctly, words create worlds.

We, of course, know this from the very first verses in the book of Bereshit (Genesis). Verse 1 declares, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” And then in verse 3, the Torah continues, "And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” How did God create the world? With words.

Over the course of the Yamim Noraim (Days of Awe) season, we will recite many, many words. We’ll pray words from the mahzor (prayerbook), offer words of blessing to one another, and even think about the words that we

regret from the past year. We, the People of the Book, cherish words. We know that words can hurt and words can heal. Words can create and, tragically, words can destroy.

A number of years ago, I heard a lecture about lashon hara (gossip). The teacher claimed that the majority of gossip happens within five minutes of completing a conversation with another person. He claimed that if one can just hold off from gossiping/complaining about another person for that five minutes, one’s lashon hara quotient would drop dramatically. Maybe even eliminate it.

In this past year, perhaps more than ever, we have witnessed the danger that inciteful, hateful words can cause. Mass shootings directed at vulnerable groups, including Jews, have been shown to be directly related to dangerous words shared by civic leaders and spread on the internet.

By the time you read this, the new year will have nearly begun. We will have started reciting tons of new words. See if you can translate your words of prayer into words of practice. Commit to using your words more wisely and carefully in the year to come.

From the very beginning, our people have taught the world that words are holy and powerful. They can create whole new realities. Even magicians know it’s true.

HaMaggid Beth Meyer Synagogue

B’ Mayim Hayim T’hiyeh, May the living waters sustain you. Rabbi Jenny Solomon, D. Min., Mikveh Director

While Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are intended to bring us to new spiritual heights as we reflect on the year that has passed so that we can grow into the year ahead, Sukkot is an earthy holiday that brings us back down from the heavenly and purely spiritual Days of Awe. It demands that we re-connect with the materials of life that sustain us and bring us joy. Tradition dictates that just after we have fasted and denied our physical needs for an entire day and night, we immediately begin work on our sukkah—a

most physical and earthy endeavor. Like the natural earth-grown myrtle, palm, willow branches, the etrog, and the fragile branches which cover the sukkah, Sukkot also calls us to connect with the Earth’s most abundant and precious resource—water. On Yom Kippur, the solemn act of fasting and the sober mood associated with repentance draw us to God beyond our bodies. Sukkot draws us right back in, connecting us to God through the wonder of our bodies and the physical world around us. M’lo kol ha’aretz k’vodo, we chant during the Amidah prayer—All of the earth (even our bodies) is full of God’s glory. The mikveh also calls us to come close to God through the physical act of celebrating our bodies and the experience of being embraced by water. If you are ready to leave the intellectual and esoteric world of the Days of Awe behind and want to settle back into the glory and fragility of the physical world, the mikveh might just be the perfect place to put things back in order. Also, if your intentions for the new year involve aspects of your physical body (how you treat it, feed it, nourish it, care for it, think about it), the mikveh is the perfect place to sanctify those commitments. To schedule your immersion, contact me by calling my cell phone 214-886-5079, the confidential mikveh line at Beth Meyer Synagogue at 919-848-1420 ext. 300 or by sending me an e-mail at [email protected].

Adult Education Committee

Due to the holiday schedule, our Brunch program will not begin until November. BUT, we do have other programs occurring in October. The Adult Ed committee is sponsoring, along with Men’s Club, a screening of the film, Heading Home on Thursday, October 17, at 7:00 pm. It is a "stirring story of sports, patriotism, and personal growth." Heading Home charts the journey of Israel's national baseball team competing for the first time in the World Classic. Our plan is to screen it in the sukkah, weather permitting. It’s been making its way around the film festival circuit and was released in theaters in some cities last month. You can purchase your ticket ($5) here (or contact the school office). We will supply the popcorn! Our Wednesday morning study group begins meeting on Wednesday, October 23. We meet from 11 - noon in the Satisky building (room 201). Amy Ripps will be teaching this first session—and we will begin with a brief review of what we covered last year and pick up with the study of the prophet Hoshea. You can always access our adult education catalog on our website; look for adult education under the “learning tab” or click here to access it directly. FYI—make sure to log in to your ShulCloud account on the website before purchasing tickets/registering for programs. This will ensure that you are getting the “member pricing.”

From Amy’s Desk—Religious School

On the morning of Yom Kippur, the Torah reading begins with the word, וידבר (va’yi’dabaer), which in modern Hebrew would be translated as: And He [God] said. But, due to a quirk in Biblical grammar, the phrase is actually translated as: And He [God] will say.

At a conference that I attended many years ago, Rabbi Jerome Epstein, then Executive Vice-President of USCJ, challenged a group of 30 educators to learn a lesson from this grammatical form and to “make the past the future for our students.” We, as educators, as parents and as a Jewish community, have a mandate to teach our past - our heritage, our history, our values - to our future - our children. Without the past, we have no future. Without the future, the past becomes meaningless. To that end, the religious school has begun a new year of study with grand plans and designs! We’ll work around the holiday schedule, soccer and gymnastic schedules, school work and more to help our children, and our families, learn to live and love Judaism.

Sydney Nicole Caplan will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on November 2, 2019. Sydney is a 7th grader at Pine Hollow Middle School, where her favorite subjects are science and math. Sydney loves dancing (jazz, ballet, and hip hop) and performing with the Carolina

Dance Foundation. She does even more dance at Six Points Sports Academy during the summer. Sydney's parents, Glen and Jennifer, her older sister, Natalie, and her cat, Moose, are all very proud of her. We are excited to share our simhah with our family, friends, and congregation.

ShulCloud Update—Learning Curves, Kol Nidre Pledges, Logging In

As with all new things, there is a learning curve. The same thing is true with ShulCloud...and not just for congregants! The office staff has also had a learning curve with regard to ShulCloud. And last month’s HaMaggid provided another learning opportunity. We use reports from ShulCloud to get the information that creates our lifecycles page with yahrzeits, birthdays and anniversaries. The report for anniversaries is formatted in such a way that the names for couples celebrating an anniversary were not listed correctly. Namely, if a couple had different last names, that was not consistently reflected in last month’s HaMaggid. Now that we know about this problem, we’ve found a way to format the report to recognize that couples may have different last names. Our apologies to those couples whose anniversary was listed incorrectly. With the High Holidays upon us, we also wanted to let those on monthly bank draft know that they will have the flexibility to pay their Kol Nidre pledges by eCheck or credit card; we will not be adjusting monthly bank draft amounts to accommodate these pledges. We encourage you to complete your Kol Nidre pledge payments by December 31, 2019. A reminder to log in (or stay logged in) to your ShulCloud account so that you can take advantage of member pricing for events, programs and classes. If you are logged in, the upper right-hand corner of the www.bethmeyer.org website will say “Welcome” with your name beside it. (“Welcome Susan Sugar,” for example.) You may find it easier to stay logged in to your account in much the same way that you may stay logged in to Amazon or other sites. If you have any questions regarding ShulCloud, please contact Rebekka Mastin at [email protected].

The Library is always open for congregants to borrow books, CD’s and magazines. Please DO NOT take materials without signing them out. The following is the procedure for taking materials from our library: 1. Remove the card from the back pocket 2. Fill in your first and last name, and the date 3. Place the card in the front of the beige index box on the desk. The procedure is quite simple. The materials in the library are for ALL, so please return them in 2-3 weeks. To return materials, just place them on the book cart by the door. If you are looking for something special, feel free to use the card catalogue. We have two sets of catalogues—one by author’s last name and one by title. Feel free to sit in our easy chairs to read. But NO materials are to leave the library without being signed out. It takes a lot of work to maintain our library. The library committee meets on Thursday morning from 10am—12pm. Thank you to our dedicated volunteer library staff of Denise Friedrich, Margaret Israelson, Betty Mandel, Lois Rabinowitz, and Norma Zendels for all their help this month.

If you have any book suggestions or ideas for improving our library, give me a call at 919-846-5835 or email [email protected].

Library News—Rita Gerber

If you are interested in donating books to our library, please remember that we want ONLY books with Jewish content. Our space is limited. Wake County Public Library is the place for all other books. We appreciate your cooperation.

Thank you, Beth Meyer Library staff

Youth Programs—Julia Snyder & Josh Orol

Our kickoff Kadima and USY weekend was a huge success. We had thirty middle and high schoolers participate in an all-day Amazing Race-style scavenger hunt around town. The program was a blast, and we have to say we’re most proud of our seniors – Rachel Fligman, Lila Haller, Max Pollack, and Jacob Gartenberg – for spending time over the summer to plan this program. They stepped up and led the younger kids through eight hours of activities. This was followed by our annual back to school sleepover for USY. We got very little sleep, and a lot of bonding accomplished.

The rest of September saw our first monthly dinners for Kadima and USY. It feels good to be back in our usual schedule, and for the school building to be full again at all hours. Thank you to Jeff Wicksel and the Halbrecht Family for volunteering to support our Youth Programs last month.

Security Committee—Steve Katz

Around the world, attacks against Jewish communities and institutions are on the rise. From anti-Israel vitriol on American campuses to desecrated religious centers in Europe, Jews have become targets of extremism. The new threat levels have compelled the Jewish community to think differently about security.

CSS (Community Security Services) is seeking volunteers to join the Beth Meyer security team. There are many opportunities to ensure the safety and security of our community including pre-event sweeps, security patrols, video surveillance and crowd management. Time commitments are flexible and we will work to accommodate personal interests and abilities with regard to security.

Please contact Steve Katz, Safety Committee Chairperson, at [email protected] for more information.

Books That Ask Big Questions—Rabbi Jenny Solomon

Joins us for our 2nd gathering of "Books that Ask Big Questions!” on November 12th from 12:30-2:30 PM.

Please bring your copy of the book and your lunch (dairy/parve). We will provide drinks and dessert.

Now is the time to acquire a copy of the book and start reading! This month’s book is If All the Seas Were Ink: A Memoir by Ilana Kurshan, WINNER of the 2018 Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature and the 2018 Sophie Brody Medal for achievement in Jewish literature.

"At the age of twenty-seven, alone in Jerusalem in the wake of a painful divorce, Ilana Kurshan joined the world’s largest book club, learning daf yomi, Hebrew for “daily page” of the Talmud, a book of rabbinic teachings spanning about six hundred years. Her story is a tale of heartache and humor, of love and loss, of marriage and motherhood, and of learning to put one foot in front of the other by turning page after page. Kurshan takes us on a deeply accessible and personal guided tour of the Talmud. For people of the book―both Jewish and non-Jewish―If All the Seas Were Ink is a celebration of learning, through literature, how to fall in love once again.

Whether you love Jewish learning, compelling memoirs, or both— you will be moved by this brilliant, original, and compelling book.

Preschool News

Beth Meyer Preschool is pleased to welcome our new Director of Early Childhood Education and Programming, Rebecca Krantz. Rebecca and her family are new members of the Beth Meyer community and recently moved to Raleigh from New Jersey, where she served as a supervisor of instruction at the East Rutherford school district and helped open a new preschool. Rebecca and her husband, Mat, are parents to Alexander who attends Beth Meyer Preschool. Welcome Krantz Family and congratulations Rebecca! As Rebecca takes her post, we’d also like to thank Interim Director Barbara Keys for supporting the preschool during this time of transition.

Beth Meyer Preschool Awarded 5 Stars!

Preschool is off to a great start for the 2019-2020 school year. The day before school started, we got word from our licensing counselor that we earned 5 Stars! Mazal Tov to all the Preschool teachers! The inspection and evaluation was last spring, all the paperwork was completed this summer, so kudos to all our teachers for their hard work. Yeah! We did it! Preschoolers have been very busy getting to know their new friends and new routines. They made friendship bracelets with Morah Gloria. The Ariyot (4s) classes made life size drawings of themselves as part of their All About Me unit. Our Dageem (3s) and Parparim (2s) students have been busy making Rosh Hashanah artwork. Morah Shoshi and Morah Ronit will help the students make a mini round challah to bring home to their families in celebration of the new year. We are excited about our High Holiday learning times with Rabbi Eric. Right before Rosh Hashanah, the students will get to see and hear the shofar. Then we will go down to the creek to cast away our sins, using breadcrumbs to symbolize our sins. Preschoolers always enjoy having their lunch and snack in the sukkah as they learn all about Sukkot from Rabbi Eric. We are so fortunate to have these special times with him! Important Preschool dates - Mark your Calendar A personal note from Barbara Keys – Thank you for this opportunity to be with all the fabulous preschoolers and their awesome teachers. Beth Meyer Preschool is a warm and nurturing place for your children, and it is a great entrance way into the synagogue for families. The parental support, as well as the facilities themselves are excellent. I have greatly enjoyed my time at BMP and know that the new director, Rebecca Krantz, will carry on the tradition of excellence at Beth Meyer Preschool.

A Refugee Circle of Welcome from Beth Meyer and Saint Andrews—Robin Jacobs

Beth Meyer Synagogue and Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church have joined together in partnership with the Lutheran Services Carolinas refugee settlement program, called Circle of Welcome. We are the first local Circle of Welcome team consisting of two different faith groups. Our chosen team name is “Saint Meyer.” We have made a one-year commitment to help the Eshaq family navigate the transition to our culture and build a foundation for success as new Americans. The Eshaq family arrived on August 27, 2019. They are originally from Afghanistan, but have been living as refugees in Turkey the past three years. The two parents have four children, ranging in age from two to thirteen. In the almost three weeks since their arrival, we have provided assistance with food, housing, clothing, furniture, other necessities, and transportation to government, medical and school appointments. In the coming weeks and months, we look forward to helping them integrate into their new community, in practical essentials such as employment, education, and learning English, and the intangible but most meaningful connections and kindnesses that are basic to the American way and the values of our mitzvot. Today some of the Saint Meyer Team, with the help of an interpreter, had a heart-warming meeting at the Eshaq's apartment. The family is gracious, kind and appreciative from the heart for our help and friendship. It is difficult from the experience of our lives to truly understand what they must have lived through, and yet it was no less moving when the parents, in this very word, expressed their feeling of peace. Shalom and Salam, from Saint Meyer.

Yom Kippur Cheat Sheet Some thing to consider as we approach Yom Kippur that begins with the evening service of Kol Nidre is that it is so important to take time out of our busy lives to gain some perspective, think about ways to better ourselves and resolve to make positive changes in the coming year. However you mark this important holiday, do it in a way that feels authentic and meaningful to you. On the “Day of Atonement”, healthy adults are commanded to refrain from eating and drinking from sunset to sunset to remind us of the frailty of the human body and our own mortality, and to encourage complete focus on the holiday. It is customary to wear white and some choose to wear sneakers or other rubber-soled shoes out of deference to the ancient practice of avoiding leather shoes, which were a symbol of luxury. At Home The yahrzeit candle is lit at sundown preceding the start of Yom Kippur and at sundown preceding the last day of Sukkot, Passover and Shavuot. There are no special prayers or blessings that must be recited while lighting a yahrzeit candle. In Jewish tradition, the candle flame is often thought to symbolically represent the human soul. Like a human soul, flames must breathe, change, grow, strive against the darkness and, ultimately, fade away. Thus, the flickering flame of the yahrzeit candle helps to remind us of the departed soul of our loved one and the precious fragility of our life and the lives of our loved ones. Before sundown, families and friends gather together and eat the last meal before the start of Yom Kippur and the period of fasting. It is a mitzvah (commandment) to eat a large meal, called a seudat mafseket (a concluding meal), before Yom Kippur begins. This meal is customarily completed before sundown. Because it is a festive meal, many people choose to include bread, and begin with HaMotzi, the blessing over the challah. Uncover the challah and say:

ברוך אתה ה' אלהינו מלך העולם המוציא לחם מן הארץ. Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu melech haolam, hamotzi lechem min haaretz. We praise You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who brings forth bread from the earth. It is only after the last bite is eaten that the holiday candles are lit, and the fast officially begins. If you choose to fast, it is important to remember that children under the age of 13 are not required to fast nor are adults whose health precludes them from fasting. We do not include Kiddush (the blessing over the wine) because once the candles have been lit and blessed we are fasting. Two candles are lit following the evening meal.

נו להדליק נר של יום הכפורים. נו במצותיו וצו לך העולם אשר קדש ינו מ ברוך אתה ה' אלה

Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu melech haolam asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu l'hadlik neir shel yom hakippurim. Blessed are You, Lord, our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with your commandments and has commanded us to light the Yom Kippur lights. (A traditional translation). Holy One of Blessing, Your presence fills creation, You make us holy with Your commandments by calling us to light the light of this Yom Kippur day. (An alternative translation).

“The world rests on three things: Torah, Prayer, and Acts of Lovingkindness.” - Pirkei Avot

Beth Meyer Synagogue is a holy community rooted in these sacred principles---

• Torah: We study the Torah to refine our souls and become more moral human beings.

• Avodah: We pray with heartfelt intention and seek ever greater ways to connect with God.

• Gemilut Hasadim: We care for each other in times of need and celebrate with each other in times of joy. We act to make the world a better place---here in Raleigh, in America, in Israel, and throughout the world.
