FROM THE PASTOR’ S DESK

October 2018 Happenings First Presbyterian Church Loris, SC

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

(Psalm 46: 1-3 NIV). I had thoughts of writing something deep and spiritual, but I was reminded of a song by the group Casting Crowns. Praise You in This Storm was originally written about a young girl’s battle with cancer. While it was very meaningful in that regard the song also speaks to many different kinds of storms. I will let the lyrics speak for themselves and to each of us.

I was sure by now, God You would have reached down And wiped our tears away,

stepped in and saved the day But once again, I say, Amen and it's still raining

As the thunder rolls I barely hear Your whisper

through the rain, "I'm with you" And as Your mercy falls I raise my hands

And praise the God who gives and takes away

And I'll praise You in this storm and I will lift my hands For You are who You are no matter where I am And every tear I've cried You hold

in Your hand You never left my side and though my heart is torn I will praise You in this storm

I remember when I stumbled in the wind

You heard my cry, You raised me up again But my strength is almost gone

How can I carry on if I can't find You

As the thunder rolls I barely hear Your whisper through the rain,

"I'm with you"

And as You mercy falls I raise my hands And praise the God who gives and takes away

And I'll praise You in this storm and I will lift my hands For You are who You are no matter where I am And every tear I've cried You hold

in Your hand You never left my side and though my heart is torn

I will praise You in this storm

I lift my eyes unto the hills Where does my help come from?

My help comes from the Lord The Maker of Heaven and Earth

I lift my eyes unto the hills

Where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord

The Maker of Heaven and Earth

And I'll praise You in this storm and I will lift my hands For You are who You are no matter where I am And every tear I've cried You hold

in Your hand You never left my side and though my heart is torn

I will praise You in this storm And though my heart is torn

I will praise You in this storm Let us pray for one another as our community struggles with the aftermath of Hurricane Flor-ence and all the other storms we face.

The Bible should be at the center of everything we do as a church. Bible Study is, therefore, an integral part of our lives as disciples. In order to make our small group Bible Studies more available we have several sessions, as listed below. Each of our Bible Study groups is different. Please consider attending one of these sessions on a regular basis or let Pastor Tim know if there is another time that would work better for you.

No Youth Group

Greetings to all! It goes without saying that September was quite a month! But in the midst of the devastation and de-struction from the hurricane and flooding, we here at LFPC, especially our youth, showed what it means to be the Light of Christ. In such a dark time for our town and our community, God worked through us, and in us, as we met the needs of those who needed it most. Words cannot adequately ex-press how proud I am of our youth and the hard work and dedication they showed during these diffi-cult times. Yard clean ups, feeding the evacuees, food and supply distribution, helping flood victims in their time of need - our youth did it all! We are blessed with an amazing group of young people! And as we continue to serve our community, we also look forward to a new month with new oppor-tunities and new excitement for our youth. Our pumpkin patch fundraiser will be up and running soon as we begin working towards next summer's mission trip and summer camp. And we also look forward to Christmas Play practice for our elemen-tary youth., which will begin this month as well. As you can see, no matter the circumstances, it's al-ways a great time to be a youth at LFPC! Thank you for your continued support of our youth! RB

“In the same way, let you light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Columbus Day in the

United States

Columbus Day is a U.S. holiday that com-memorates the landing of Christopher Co-lumbus in the Americas in 1492, and Co-lumbus Day 2018 occurs on Monday, Oc-tober 8. It was unofficially celebrated in a number of cities and states as early as the 18th century, but did not become a federal holiday until 1937. For many, the holiday

is a way of both honoring Columbus ’ achievements and celebrating Italian-American heritage.

“No one should fear to undertake any task in the name of our Savior, if it is just and if the intention is purely for His holy service. The working out of all things has been assigned to each person by our Lord, but it all happens according to His sovereign will, even though He gives advice. He lacks nothing that is in the power of men to give Him. Oh, what a gracious Lord, who desires that people should perform for Him those things for which He holds Himself responsible! Day and night, moment by moment, everyone should express their most devoted gratitude to Him.” - Christopher Columbus
