Respectfully,
Nicholas R. JohnsenDirector of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation
October is a unique month as it brings lots of exciting opportunities. I’ll start these opportunities in reverse order, and not necessarily as an indi-cation of importance: Halloween, Army Family Action Plan (AFAP), and October Fest. These and much more are available to you so after scanning this commen-tary wade on into this month’s “Hood Happenings” magazine for the “rest of the story.” Remember how neat it was to go around wearing that plastic mask? You could barely see out of those little eye holes and it collected all of the moisture from your breath and dripped that same moisture down the inside front of your costume of choice. To make it even more memorable it fit poorly? I sure do! I can remember the sweet taste of victory, no pun, of count-ing the goods upon my return home. I know times have changed, and I often wonder if they have changed for the better, but Fort Hood will conduct Halloween and you’ll need to stay tuned to the Senti-nel and other channels as the word goes out as to when Halloween will be observed. AFAP will be conducted 25-28 Oct 11 and we will be asking for volunteers to come and sort through the input of issues we have collected throughout the year. All of us have benefited from this great program, and I have no doubt that we all will continue to benefit in the future. Please consider being a volunteer delegate for this year’s AFAP conference-we need your thoughts on these issues. Oktoberfest will be celebrated with all of the nor-mal trimmings associated with this special event. Please come out and join us for a great evening of fel-lowship and camaraderie as we all share our stories of our tour(s) to the FRG..oops Germany! It is a great event and fun for all. Safety first is not just a catchy phrase-it should be ingrained in every aspect of our lives. It should be a constant companion to warn us well in advance of our taking an action that could harm us or others. It is that invisible layer that surrounds our battle buddies, our teammates, and our Family’s- who all know the sad-ness and heartbreak that can come from taking our focus off of safety.

In De-stress Stress is any obstacle, constraining force or influence that causes hardship. A key part of stress management is to identify your true sources of stress, look closely at your habits, attitude and excuses. Determine the level of impact the stressors have on your life and possible solutions. Listed below are a few tips that may help you “De-stress”.
Make yourself a priority; set aside “Me Time”, whether enjoying a day at the spa or a quiet evening reading a book or listening to soothing music.
Nurture yourself from within, proper nutrition plays a significant role in overall well-being.
Exercise, regular exercise releases endorphins that have a calming effect on the body.
Sleep well, allow your body adequate time for quality rest and recuperation to rejuvenate the body.
Grow and develop: try something new like painting, playing an instrument, taking a class, word puzzles, bird watching or chanting to sharpen and promote clarity of mind.
Seek help, don’t be afraid to ask for help and seek counseling and medical attention.
Army Community Service offers Military Family Life Consultants whom provide free confidential consultations and counseling. To take advantage of this resource, call 254-553-4705. Military Family Life Consultants are not medical doctors nor do they administer medical services, but are skilled professionals whom provide counselings, consultations and resources. Seek prompt medical attention, should your stress seem insurmountable.

It is said, in order to help yourself; you should do something to help oth-ers. However, sometimes you don’t want to commit to a long-term obliga-tion. Volunteering is the perfect way to discover something you are really good at or develop a new skill. Vol-unteer experience stands out on a resume and if you are in school or looking for a job, this can be a great way to fill in the breaks between jobs. A volunteer experience can lead to something you never imagined or help you discover a hobby or interest you were unaware of. Sometimes we get locked into the “rat-race” of life. Volunteering can give the perfect escape from ev-eryday routine and create a balance in our lives. Finding new interests and hobbies through volunteering can be fun, relaxing, and even en-ergizing. Volunteers predominantly express a sense of achievement and motivation, which is ultimately gener-ated from the desire and enthusiasm to help.
Some of the exciting benefits of volunteering are: you can never tell who you will meet; what new skills you will learn; or what impact it will have on your life. I am very pas-sionate about volunteering; it is truly a labor of love for me. Volunteering has provided the opportunity to make many lasting friendships, learn more about myself, and find my true calling in life. Volunteering reflects and sup-ports a complete picture of you and gives real examples of your com-mitment, dedication, and interests. Show people what you are passion-ate about and maybe you will inspire them too! There are many ways to give back to your community, and the great thing about volunteering is you can give as little or as much time as you have available. For more information volunteer opportunities in your community, contact the Fort Hood Army Volunteer Corps at 254-287-8657. s

Monster Eyes1 ½ cups (3 sticks) softened butter2 cups creamy or crunchy peanut butter1 cup crispy rice cereal1 (16-ounce) box confectioners’ sugar2 (16-ounce) packages white chocolate candy coating, melted1 cup fruit flavored loop cerealRed gel icing
In a large bowl, combine butter and peanut butter and beat with an electric mixer until creamy. Gradually beat in rice cereal and confectioners’ sugar and then cover and chill for four hours. Shape peanut butter mixture into one-inch balls. Using a skewer or toothpicks, dip peanut butter balls in melted candy coating. Place on wax paper, and place one fruit flavored loop cereal “o” on hole from toothpick to make the center of the “eye.” Repeat procedure with the remaining peanut butter balls, candy coating and fruit cereal. When chocolate has hardened, squeeze one drop of red gel icing in the center of each frosted cereal “o” and decorate the surface with squiggles of red gel icing. Store Monster Eyes in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Makes about four dozen candies.

Skull Cupcakes12 unfrosted cupcakes1 ½ cups white chocolate chips1 can (16-ounces) dark chocolate frostingChocolate Halloween sprinkles
Using the top of the cupcake as a guide for size of skull, draw outline of skull, eyes and nose on
white paper. Place on baking sheet covered with wax paper.
Melt white chocolate chips in microwave as package directs.
Spoon into a sturdy zip lock bag; snip tip off a corner
with scissors. Using the drawing placed under the waxed paper as a guide, pipe a white chocolate skull on to the paper leaving the eyes and nose uncovered. Move the drawing over and
repeat the process, piping out the other 11 skulls onto
wax paper. Refrigerate the chocolate skulls to set.
Spoon two tablespoons of frosting into another zip lock bag,
set aside. Use remaining frosting to frost the tops of the cupcakes. Roll the edges
of the cupcakes in the sprinkles. Peel the white chocolate skulls from the wax paper and place on each cupcake. Snip the tip off of the corner of the bag with the reserved icing. Use this to draw the mouth and scar on each skull.

ook! Over there on the horizon, do you see that? No, it’s not a bird, it’s not a plane, this isn’t even Superman…it is clearly the festival that will have Fort Hood Families dancing
and partying the night away – the 2011 Oktoberfest. Oktoberfest is a festival that the citizens in Germany hold for around three consecutive weeks, ending in a grand celebration. Here at “The Great Place”, we have decided to forego the nearly three-week celebration and capture all of the jubilation in one great day!
On October 14, beginning at 5 pm, the Phantom Warrior Parking Lot will be transformed into a German-like wonderland full of tents and booths, not to be confused with the Alps and Black Forest of the southern state of Bavaria. The event is open to the public, and all ages are welcome. Once the event begins and the dignitary taps the keg, the celebration will be on! The mugs will be filled to the brim with ice-cold genuine German beer, tantalizing odors of schnitzel sandwiches, currywurst, pretzels and juicy bratwursts will drift enticingly in the air, and the aroma of sweet German style desserts will surely open your horizon to an array of authentic
German flavors. The festival is free, but food and drinks will be sold at a nominal fee. Watch strong-willed contestants compete to outlast one another in a Beer Stein Strongman and Strongwoman Competition. Who will have the endurance, strength and will to outlast their competitors as they hold their full beer stein at an arm’s length away from their body? The last competitor standing, with their arm extended, wins a custom-made Oktoberfest beer stein.
Don’t forget to savor your thirst for beer in a designated area that will be available for beer tasting, and dance along to live music featuring a band from Houston, the Crisis, that will engage and entertain the crowd throughout the evening! Also, for all of you cyclists out there, there is the Pubcrawler of Austin for you to pedal and sip! The fun doesn’t end there as festival-goers can visit the arts and crafts tents - where vendors will have a variety of fall crafts, including ceramic mugs, decorated gourds and wreaths. The more youthful crowd at the festival will be enthralled with the myriad of activities for them, as well. There will be face

nowledge is power! Yes, it’s a well-worn cliché, but true nonetheless. Knowledge of your personal financial resources will empower you like no other. Personal
financial management can be difficult if you don’t know where to start. The Army Community Service Financial Readiness Branch has an abundance of resources to help you on the path to wealth. All services provided are free of charge. Below is a sampling of resources designed to help you increase your knowledge and your bottom line. Do you know what your (money) sign is? Your quest for knowledge may begin with the ACS Money Personality Workshop. This resource will explore such questions as, how did your upbringing affect your view of money? What does ‘wealth’ mean to you? What experiences have you had that have changed your views about money? So much of what one does on a daily basis depends on the credit score. Do you want to purchase a car, obtain insurance and get a job? Credit score may play a big part in all of these. Expand your knowledge and possibly your wealth by attending the ACS Credit booster class, designed to help you understand your credit report and how to boost your score. A free FICO score is also available to active duty Soldiers and their Families. Do you have more debt than money on a monthly basis? Sometimes debt overwhelms Families and causes them to dig deeper and deeper in debt. The Budget Debt Management class offers ways to create accurate budgets/spending plans, while learning strategies to manage personal debt. You may be surprised by how snowballing your debt payments will help you to eliminate them in a more expedient way.

Savings and investing are often used synonymously, when in reality, one precedes
the other. A sound emergency savings is a perquisite to beginning investing. The Savings and Investing class will help you to set and prepare for future goals in savings and investing. If the classroom is not your cup of tea, ACS Personal Financial Readiness Specialists are available for individual and Family sessions. The specialists can assist you in developing a plan to help you reach your financial goals using an array of resources including books, video lessons, the Internet and the ever-popular phone apps. Your one stop place for resources in personal financial management is found at the Army Community Service Financial Readiness Branch. If you need assistance or an appointment please contact the Financial Readiness Branch, Personal Financial Readiness Specialists (PFRS) at Rivers Building 121, 254-287-8979 or Personal Financial Assistance Center (PFAC), Building 12020, Suite 400, 254-553-4701. s

s it gets cooler outside, we tend to lean towards indoor activities, so why not check into Casey Memorial Library to
check out some fun! Check out great books, DVDs, audio books, exam study guides, CDs and even Blu-rays…but wait-- that’s not all, there is much more going on that is free for all. There will be a showing of the movie “Sleepy Hollow” Tuesday, October 4, at 6 pm for adults (17 years of age and older, 100 minutes). This tale of love and haunting based on the short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving has chilled and enthralled readers for nearly a century. We’ll provide popcorn and a dessert. Stay after the movie to discuss the story and other books you’ve been reading. If you can only make a short stop, there are still activities in which you can take part. Pull out your favorite board game or play one of ours on Game Day, Sunday, October 16 any time from 3:30 - 6:30 pm. We have games for every age, from Chess to Uno. Studies indicate even simple games like Chutes and Ladders can help young learners improve math and social skills, so come have fun and keep your mind in shape.
Do you have a report or paper to write? Learn how to search for online information on the internet and in Army Library subscription databases such as Academic OneFile and the Science Resource Center. You’ll need a MilitaryOneSource.com or Army Knowledge Online account to access the databases. This will be an interactive session, so please create an account before coming to the session on October 17 at 5 pm, pre-registration is not required. To get you ready for trick-or-treating, decorate a bag at the monthly Make ‘n Take Craft Wednesday, October 19, from 5 - 7 pm. Books make great (low-calorie) treats, so check out a few while you’re here. Let loose the skeletons from the closet Saturday, October 29 during Science Saturday between 10 am – 4 pm by making a skeleton. Bring your bag back for a Trick-or-Treat Scavenger Hunt October 30 starting at 1 pm. There will be an adult course and a children’s course, so everyone can take part. Relax from the Hunt for awhile with Halloween cartoons from 12 – 5 pm, sure to make you shriek, if only with laughter. So, come one, come all, and check out the fun at Casey Memorial Library! s

s October arrives, so do visions of witches, werewolves, ghosts and goblins. There is a true scare that the
Army Community Service Family Advocacy Program (FAP) encounters- Domestic violence! Domestic violence is a frightening subject, because many people do not like to talk about it. We see a friend whose partner seems controlling, yet we say nothing. We watch our teenagers get too involved in a relationship and we justify it as “kids will be kids.” We are terrified in our own homes, but we do not want to face the fact that we may be in an abusive relationship. Many programs on Fort Hood, from the Sexual Assault Program and Response Program to the Fort Hood iWatch Antiterrorism Program, encourage everyone to “Intervene, Act, Motivate” or “See Something, Say Something.” The same is true of domestic violence. Does a friend seem afraid? Can shrieks be heard coming from a neighbor’s house? If so, be knowledgeable about available services and reach out! The Family Advocacy Specialist (FAS) Program provides direct assistance, through which each Battalion has a Soldier who is well-versed in Family issues and Fort Hood programs. Suspicions of child abuse must be reported through 254-287-CARE, the Fort Hood reporting
point of contact. The Victim Advocate Crisis Line is also available 24/7, at 254-718-7583. Promoting healthy relationships may eliminate domestic violence altogether. FAP works to reduce domestic violence through prevention education.Courses include Common Sense Parenting; the Relationship Enrichment Program; Stress, Anger and Conflict Management and Expect Respect dating violence education for Youth and Soldiers. Programs are also designed to support single Soldier parents, provide information for youth and provide child safety information. During the scariest time of the year (Halloween), FAP is busy drawing attention to Domestic Violence Prevention Month. We begin with a purple ribbon campaign, and encourage everyone to wear a purple ribbon to show support for victims and awareness of this important issue. Professional development workshops, awareness events, and information tables are just a few examples of how the Army Community Service Family Advocacy Program is committed to advocating domestic violence awareness and prevention. If you would like more information or if you know of someone who could benefit from FAP, don’t be afraid to call or have them call 254-286-6774. s

ave you ever looked for something very important, only to realize that it was not accessible or hiding in plain sight? Well
look no further, because awareness gives greater disability visibility. October is National Disability Awareness Month and we are celebrating the opportunity to continue offering exciting programs to Families with Exceptional Family Members (EFMs). Come swim Tuesday mornings with the Sea Turtles, walk or stroll the III Corps track during the Disability Awareness Walk or take a Parent Education Advocacy Program (PEAP) class and learn how to be your child’s strongest advocate by understanding how education laws work to benefit you. In addition, we want you to help us to focus more attention on the challenges that matter the most to our Families. This month, the Army Community Services Exceptional Family Member Program will participate in the annual Army Family Action Planning Conference. Disability visibility increases when we encourage Soldiers and Families to enroll, speak up, speak out and be heard! All year long, EFMP is available to provide insight into the many support programs available to Families both on and off the Installation! We
offer personal assistance with community support options, advocacy, systems of care navigation and special needs advisory services. Some Families will also qualify for respite care services. In addition, we have partnered with a large number of other organizations to bring some services right to your front door. There is a myriad of information and resources for Families to access. Just let us know what you need! For your convenience, we are located in Building 121 (also known as the Rivers Building) on the corner of 761st Tank Battalion Avenue and T.J. Mills Boulevard. Our main phone number is 254-287-6070. If you would like to know more about our ongoing and upcoming programs, we invite you to visit our website at HoodMWR.com/acs/efmp.html. If you have a particular question for our trained and knowledgeable Systems Navigators, please send us an e-mail at [email protected]. Not enrolled in EFMP yet? Initiating the assessment process to enroll is fairly simple, and assistance is available at the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, on the first floor, in room 1243A with the medical EFMP office. Their main phone number is 254-288-8099. s
