SENIOR CENTER
S H I R L E Y D O A N E
Dear Friends,
I know I have often noted how impressed I am by the people here at the
senior center. People treat each other and themselves with respect. I
believe people show respect for themselves by spending time with peo-
ple that make them happy. Although a person shouldn’t automatically
earn respect from others by getting older, it is so important to extend
common courtesy to everyone you meet. I believe respect must be
earned yet no one deserves another’s disrespect. Our center is a won-
derful example of a community that shares in these values. Thank you
all for who you are!

October is a special month for me, I started work here at the senior center in October of
last year. October is a changing month for everyone. We clean up our yards, get the house
ready for winter, get our cars serviced for cold weather. We celebrate Columbus Day on the
12th and enjoy Halloween, watching the little ghosts and goblins.
We turn the AC off, turn on the heat for the crispy mornings. We can pick apples, or pumpkins,
or just be leaf peepers for the fall colors.
The Senior Center bus trip will be a beautiful day, with the Eagle Center visit and the LaCrosse
Queen Boat trip. Sounds like a lot of fun.
The Senior Center is lucky to have children join us for a Wednesday Halloween meal. They love
it and so do the seniors.
Our center is a special place and so are all the members and volunteers who come for the
events.
Thank you for coming and caring about the Shirley Doane Senior Center.

IT’S A DOGS LIFE!
Whether you are an animal lover or not perhaps
dogs can teach us a few tricks! Here is an excerpt
from an article written by Rachel Tiang on a few
things dogs do to make life more meaningful. Per-
haps we should try at least a few!
“Never pass up an opportunity for a joy ride.” Al-
low the experience of fresh air to be pure ecstasy.
“When loved ones come home, always run to
great them.’ Spend as much time as possible with
the ones you love.
Take time to stretch before rising.” Run, romp
and play daily.
Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
Be loyal.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit
close by and nuzzle him or her gently.

FELINE LOW COST SPAY AND NEUTER PROGRAM
The Dunn County Humane Society was recently awarded grant monies from the
Community Foundation of Dunn County and the Greg Biffle Foundation to help fi-
nance feline low cost spay and neuter surgeries for SSI recipient cat owners re-
siding within the county.
The Feline Low Cost Spay and Neuter program was developed in collaboration
with area veterinarians who have agreed to discount surgical procedures above
and beyond the vouchers provided by grant monies. At this time, four veterinary
clinics within the county have agreed to participate in the program. They in-
clude Hoof and Paw Clinic, Ltd, Country Doctors Veterinary Service, Brakken
Veterinary Clinic, and the Colfax Animal Hospital.
In order to participate in the Feline Low Cost Spay and Neuter Program, eligible
clients are required to complete a FLCSNP application, provide proof of resi-
dency in Dunn County, provide proof of SSI status, and provide proof of pet own-
ership (i.e. pet license, rabies vaccine, microchip registration, etc.)
For more information about the Feline Low Cost Spay and Neuter Program,
please contact Josh Dalton, Executive Director, at the Dunn County Humane So-
ciety animal shelter. He can be reached by emailing
[email protected] or by telephoning 715-232-9790.
The Society also offers several low cost micro-chip clinics each year. On Octo-
ber 10th from 9:00am until 2:00pm there will be a clinic at Keyes Chevrolet in
Menomonie. Pet owners can have their pet(s) micro-chipped for a $10 fee
which includes chip injection and registration into the nationwide database. Mi-
cro-chipping is a safe and reliable means to permanently identify vital pet infor-
mation which can greatly help to re-unite lost pets with their owners.
