Vol. 37 No. 1 October 2015 President’s Message: This time of year reminds me of a poem by Seema Chowdhury, it starts… As summer ends and autumn comes Days get shorter, misty and cold And in this spectacular season Nature's beauty graciously unfold. It is true, the days are getting shorter and chillier, but I look forward to fall - it is my fa- vourite time of year. I wait patiently for nature to say goodbye to summer, and to the start of the leaves changing to their vibrant colours. The landscape of Ontario changes to a carpet of reds, oranges and yellows. Even coming to guild, I like to take a quick drive down into Sunnybrook Park just to see the trees changing. This month our guest Kathy McNeil, will transport us to different lands, with her landscape quilts, and inspire us with her appliqué. She says “Every creative act begins as a connection between the artist and their world. Exploration of that moment of inspiration fuels the process of telling a story and making art. “Canadian Teacher of the Year” in 2009, and has many quilts in international collections. She creates a di-

Workshops:

Bonjour from the workshop chicks! Just a reminder that Kathy McNeil’s workshops are on October 20 and 21. To all those who have signed up, welcome to two days of beautiful art work and creativity. If you are consider-ing signing up for one of her workshops, but haven’t done so yet, please note that you will need a pattern that must be ordered from the United States. The patterns will be ordered 10 days prior to the first workshop, so unless you have purchased her latest book “Landscape Quilting by Kathy McNeil” or plan on ordering your own pattern, you will need to let us know by October 10th or sooner. Visit Kathy’s website www.kathymcneilquilts.com to see more about her workshops. Also, take a look at her newsletter for all her news and recent spectacular projects….not to mention her heart warming tale of 6 days without electricity. We Torontonians know all about that one! We have already begun setting things in motion for Heather Stewart’s “bargello” workshop, Wednesday November 18th. At the October meeting we will be giving a presentation about Heather’s work and her stunning quilt projects. See you on October 20th. Happy Halloween!

Anabelle Payne and Judy Beca [email protected] and [email protected]

Wednesday November 18th—Spiral Bargello This workshop allows you to make a fantastic wall quilt using 20 different fabrics. This is Heather's design based on a technique developed by Chris Timmins of Australia. Any com-bination of fabrics in gradation colour families will work. Piecing of the strata is done at home before the workshop.

Tuesday October 20th—The Wonderful World of Landscape Quilting Discover the secrets that will bring your landscapes alive. Learn to create depth and dimension in your pattern with simple tricks of fabric choices. Play with fabric paints to create those realistic hi-lights and shad-ows. Kathy will demonstrate a mix of appliqué tech-niques! Begin the journey of landscape quilting work-

ing on your pattern.

Wednesday October 21st—Feathers are Flying Learn the steps of layered appliqué to make a beautiful bird design. Kathy will teach two different methods of appliqué - fused raw edge or the new easy Apliquick method of hand appliqué with turned edges. Your beautiful birds can be made as free objects that will be ready to place on the background scene or block of your choice. Patterns include background scenes as shown. Apliquick hand appliqué or raw edge tech-niques are suitable for beginners.

The YHQG has a substantial membership which al-lows us to enjoy speakers and workshops from well-known quilters from across Canada and around the world. However, volunteers are also important to the rich experience of a quilting community. Consider be-coming more involved in the various guild activities. Just ask any executive member how you can enrich our quilting community. Many thanks to Lana Peck, Ann Hawkins, and Leslie Chisholm for greeting our members and assisting them in picking up their 2015-2016 green cards, com-pleting their applications, and answering questions. We welcomed three new members at our September meeting: Gail Gordon, Sandra Peace and Diane Shink. For the October meeting, Helen Crooke, Shelley Keyser and Val Taylor will be the friendly faces to greet you at the door. Please remember your bright green membership card and we look forward to receiv-ing more renewals on October 20th. “You don’t make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved.” Ansel Ad-ams, one of my favourite artists, seems to capture in this quote the complexity and depth of the act of quilt-ing too.

Announcing our upcoming Members Challenge

“Out of the Blue”

This year Sandy and her team are organizing a juried challenge. The theme is “Out of the Blue”. If you enjoy

challenges you might like to put some of your “grey matter” to work and join fellow YHQG members in this up-

coming challenge.

For those of you who have never entered a juried challenge…why wouldn’t you enter? We’ve heard many rea-

sons, including the following:

Reason: "I don’t think my quilt is good enough." Response: You never know how others see your quilt and the feedback from the judging will allow you to per-fect some needed skills or to say….. “Yes, I AM a good enough quilter to enter a show!”

Reason: " I don’t think there is enough time." Response: Well, there is never enough time! That is why we have no size restrictions, and no need to pro-

duce a whole cloth bed quilt.

Reason: “How will my quilt be judged?”

Response: A professional judge will evaluate each quilt based on how well you have interpreted the theme.

She will also judge how well you have put the quilt together.

Reason: “Are there any restrictions on what I enter?”

Response: There is NO size restriction. You can have as many colours as you wish, embellish to your hearts

content, hand stitch or machine stitch. If you think of it, you can do it. The only thing is, please put a hanging

sleeve on for the April meeting.

Reason: “What if I don’t want my quilt hung at the April meeting, but I would like to have it judged?”

Response: No problem, just let us know and we will not hang it up.

Reason: “Why would I like to do this?”

Response: It’s fun to challenge yourself and your skills and get feedback.

The Rules of Entry, Levels of Entry and Prize information follows, and an entry form is include with this newslet-

ter. Information can also be found on the guild website here:

The Founders Award was established on the occasion of our guild’s 25th anniversary in honour of our founding members. It acknowledges the best interpretation of the challenge theme. A $100.00 prize accompanies this award. It is open to all entrants but can only be won once by any Guild member.

These awards will only be presented if, in the opinion of the judges, the entries meet the standards of this challenge com-petition.

Community Quilts

You could win a prize for finishing a Community Quilt sandwich! ENTER OFTEN TO WIN! Each quilted CQ sandwich returned will qualify you for one entry to the draw. Straight stitching is a great way to finish these sandwiches, or use a CQ sandwich to practice your free motion quilting. It's a win-win for yourself and the final recipient. Prizes are a choice of quilt kit, a $25 or a $15 certificate for purchases from the CQ table. Draws will take place at the January and May 2016 guild meetings. Thanks for the ten quilted CQ sandwiches returned at the September meeting: Kathy Schofield and Erica Rao (3), Elizabeth Davis (2), Sandy Lindal (2), Bob Gutcher(2), Charlene Hurst. Thanks go out to Phoebe Visser (2), Jean Pucyk, Anne Wood and Ann Ferguson for do-nations from their own stash. A special thanks to Jean Pucyk who also donated 8 quilts from her own stash during the summer.

Sherry Davidson is overseeing the distribution of com-fort quilts. She was able to donate a number of quilts this summer to Covenant House, who distributed them to youth in need. As well as working with Covenant House, she is investigating how to link with the ex-pected arrival of Syrian refugees. She started by deliv-ering 30 comfort quilts, both adult and kid-themed, to Sojourn House. A speaker to acknowledge and edu-cate the membership on the final destination of these quilts can be expected at either the October or Novem-ber guild meeting. Thanks to Linda Royce and former member Kathy Al-bino for their fabric, book and pattern donations to Community Quilts.

October 2015 Vendor

Fridays Off Fabric Shop is a Canadian online fabric shop carrying the best quality 100% cotton, flannel and knit designer fabrics for your quilting, home dec and other sewing projects. The shop also boasts the largest fabric subscription club in Canada, called Le Club, where subscribers receive carefully curated sur-prise bundles of six or twelve fat quarters every month. It all began when I noticed a serious shortage of Ca-nadian-based online fabric shops. I was looking for a career change so I hung up my public relations hat and opened my very own online shop. Since then, the shop has been featured in Style at Home magazine and makes a semi-regular appearance on the Cana-dian Living blog Make & Do. I also host open houses in my home "studio" and do everything I can to spread the fabric love via Facebook and Instagram. At the guild meeting I'll be selling the following:

• Single fat quarters • Fat quarter bundles • Half metre bundles • Bolt ends

I will also have my iPad so you can order online right on the spot. Cash and credit will be accepted. Looking forward to it!
