From the Director‟s Desk

Hello Chapter O! We would like to thank everyone for braving the

cold weather to attend our Polar Bear Breakfast. I cannot think of a better

way to start the New Year than being with our Chapter O family. I was

amazed at the turnout considering how cold it was. We even had guests;

Mike and Lori Adkins.

They were thinking about joining our chapter and wanted to see what we

were all about. I was proud of how each and every one of you went out of

your way to make them feel welcome. Both of them have their own bike.

Mike has a front trike conversion and Lori rides a Spider. They are looking

forward to joining our family.

We had a nice crowd for our January meeting. I thought the snow

might keep everyone away. I should have known better. We had several

guests to join us. Mike and Lori Adkins were there. They brought Lori‟s son

Jeremy with them. Jeremy is in the military and was leaving the next day.

We thank him for keeping us safe. We were also joined by DJ Hazebrook,

who rides a yellow 2002 1800, and Jeff Robinson. Jeff has a two tone grey

2017 1800. Welcome everyone!

One of the joys of being a Chapter Director is getting to award a

chapter member for a job well done. 2018 Couple of the year is Wendy and

Jim Bengert.

It was an honor to give Wendy hers and Jim‟s medal.

Winter Rendezvous is February 9th and 10th. This year‟s theme is “Let‟s

Play Ball!” Becky and Wendy plan to attend. I cannot think of two better

members to represent Chapter O. I am looking forward to hearing their stories.

I wish it was closer so more members could join in on the fun. Maybe next

year.

Hopefully the Saturday after Winter Rendezvous we will have our annual

Valentine‟s dinner at the Log Inn. This is always a popular event for our

members.

Good company and good food. Sounds like a winner to me!

Coming up on Saturday March 3rd is a new event. A girl‟s only lunch at

Rafferty‟s on Green River Road. We are going to have a great time.

WOW! It looks like we are off to a great start for 2018. Even with the

snowy weather we had great attendance for our January gathering. Charles

introduced all of the officers, old and new.

The Chapter welcomed some guests to the gathering and hopefully, with

that, some new members. Welcome to D J Hazebrook, Lori & Mike Adkins

and their son Jeremey, and Jeff Robinson.

Congratulation go out to our 2018 Couple Of the Year, Wendy & Jim

Bengert. They have been our Chapter MEC and have worked tireless in their

job. Wendy & Jim were also presented with their Masters from the District

Assistant Rider Ed. Couple, Debbie & Dennis Juncker, Congratulation again

on another job well done.

We will be having our Valentines Dinner on February 17th at 4:00 PM at the

Log Inn (time could change).

Kathy Friedman is planning a Ladies Luncheon for sometime in March. More

details to come on this.

Charlie & Linda Willett are heading up the 2018 ride schedule, and would

like to have any suggestions from the members. So if in your travels last year

you found some new place you would like to see the Chapter ride to this

year, let Charlie know and maybe it may make the list.

A reminder: Winter Rendezvous is coming up on February 9-10. Wendy and

I will be going and know that we will have a wonderful weekend.

In closing, here's hoping Mother Nature has a change of heart and lets us

have a break from the ice and snow and cold weather soon. Hope to see

you at the next gathering on February 11th.

To All Members and Members to Be, How about this weather so far this year! It is like feast or famine. I do not know about you but I am getting excited about spring being just a month away and I am getting my rides ready to get on the open road. Now I know a few of you have been riding even if it is just to work and back and maybe just a quick trip around the neighborhood to get those juices flowing or get that cabin fever out of your system. I can only say I envy those that can do this as my days off seem to coincide with the weather being at its worst. For those of you getting out, just a few reminders of what you need to watch for as you are out this time of year. People are not ready (if they ever are) for motorcycles to be out this time of year. So give extra distance and extra caution at intersections, as you always should. A lot of four wheelers might not expect your presence and could cause you some unneeded bike and body issues. It is also a good time of the year to get those things taken care of for maintenance on those two and three wheel steeds so we can enjoy every moment when the weather does let those steeds out of the barn. There are also personal items that need to be attended to. Update those medicine and medical lists and make copies either hard copies or flash drives. Make sure that the people you are riding with know where these are located in case of an emergency. It is also advisable to update phone lists and relatives that need to be notified in case of an emergency while out on a trip or just a short ride around the areas that you ride. As a group we do a very good job of watching how we perform on the road as we watch out for the people in our group and others around us. So let us keep up the good work and have another great year of riding and adventures as we get prepared for this riding season. Ride safe so we can meet again,

bikes. If you hire someone to do your maintenance, they are slower in the winter

Abraham Lincoln stopped here in November 1844 on his way back home from Evansville. He was on a campaign

tour speaking for “Clay for President” on the Clay Whig party ticket.

Lincoln‟s trip included stops in Vincennes, Washington, Gentryville, and visited his mother‟s grave which is now a

national shrine. This was the only time he ever visited his mother‟s grave after moving to Illinois. After his visit

there, Lincoln went on to Rockport and Evansville, where on October 31st he attended a meeting in the

courthouse before taking the stagecoach back home.

In the 1840‟s the Log Inn was one of the main stage coach stops between Evansville and Vincennes. The first

established road north of Evansville was built to the John Withrow farm near Warrenton, in 1811. In 1822 a state

road was commissioned to be built between Evansville and Terre Haute. The first stage coach started running

between Evansville and Vincennes in 1824.

Travel Woes for our Kentucky Members

The Department of Homeland Security has been phasing in more strict policies since 2001. In 2016 the upgrade included American’s driver licenses and identification cards. The Act established minimum security standards for each state’s driver license issuance and production. Any license or identification card not meeting the Act’s minimal standards can no longer be used for accessing Federal facilities and nuclear power plants or boarding federally regulated commercial aircraft. The act does not require individuals to present identification where it is not currently required. Some states are compliant with these upgrades and some are still working on it even then they were suppose to be completely compliant by 2018. Secure drivers licenses and identification documents are a vital component for national security strategy. Law enforcement must be able to rely on government-issued documents to be correctly assigned to who they are suppose to be.

Kentucky is not the only state that is noncompliant and currently has an extension for

Homeland Security‟s enforcement of the improper IDs. This will allow Federal

agencies and airlines to accept driver‟s licenses and identification cards from Kentucky

until October 10, 2018.

Page 12

February is American Heart Month. This is a great time to commit to a healthy lifestyle. Start small, because even the smallest changes can lead to heart health improvement. According to the Centers for Disease, Control, and Prevention, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women . During American Heart Month, men and women are encouraged to give the gift of love for Valentine’s Day that can reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke. Here are a few ways to start small heart healthy habits. First, schedule a visit with your doctor to talk about heart health. It is important to have regular check-ups. Partner with your doctor and health care team to improve your heart health. Do not be afraid to ask questions. Add exercise to your daily routine. Start slow by walking or riding a stationary bike 10 to 15 minutes, 3 times a week. Increase your endurance about every 15 days. Increase healthy eating by cooking at home and limit eating out. Use low sodium/low fat recipes. Increase vegetable and fruit intake. If you smoke, take steps to quit. Your doctor and health care team can help. There are now medications and support groups to help through this process. Take medications as prescribed. Talk to your doctor about the importance of high blood pressure and cholesterol medications and their side effects. Work with your health care team in finding medications that are affordable.

What is Prayer?

Page 13

Prayer is a personal form of communication where we can speak directly to our

Father in Heaven. We can pray aloud or in our hearts. Our Father in Heaven knows

each of us and loves us. He hears all of our prayers and answers them. Sometimes

those answers come in a very direct way and other times the answers are much

more subtle.

We pray with love and respect by choosing special words: Father, Heavenly Father,

in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen. We pray in reverence by making the sign of the

cross, bowing our heads, closing our eyes, or folding our hands.

This communication with God helps us build a more meaningful personal

relationship with Him. Sincere prayer helps us grow spiritually, shape our character,

and strengthens our love for others and for our Father in Heaven. Www.mormon.org/prayer

It is joy in life to find at every turning of the road,

the strong arm of a comrade kind,

to help me with my onward load.

And since I have no gold to give,

„tis love alone must make amends.

My only prayer is while I live

God Make me worthy of my friends. Www.mydearvalentine.com
