God’s work. Our hands.

Rising to the Challenge Last June, while attending the Montana Synod Assembly in Great Falls, I had a moment of great pride. My heart was also filled with thanksgiving. Christ the King, out of some 160+ ELCA congregations in our state (and in Northern Wyoming), gave more than $5800 to hunger appeals locally and globally in 2008, making us one of the most generous congregations in the Synod when it comes to fighting hunger.

As of August 31st, 2009 we have given over $4800 to local and global hunger appeals. 2009 ends in three short months. I have great hopes that we can exceed the 2008 totals.

Please consider giving an additional gift every first Sunday of the month for the next three months, to help feed hungry people here in Montana and across the globe. On Sunday, October 4th, Sunday, November 1st, and Sunday, December 6th we will pass the hunger cups (44 ounce soft drink cups) after the regular offering is received during worship. We use the average price of a fast food meal as a benchmark for giving. I always order two large burritos, a plate of nachos grande, and a large Diet Pepsi when I frequent Taco Bell. That comes to $8.76. $9 will go in the hunger cups (or maybe even a little bit more) on those Sundays.

I am proud of our leadership in the Montana Synod in addressing hunger.

My heart is also filled with thanksgiving, for your generosity and for your faithfulness.

Tragedy Comes to Christ the King! The congregation is invited to attend final dress rehearsal

Okay, relax, it’s not that kind of tragedy, but Shakespeare’s classic tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Montana Shakespeare in the Schools has been rehearsing at Christ the King from September 14th thru the 30th.

As always, the congregation is invited to the company’s final dress rehearsal at 6:30pm (note time change) on Thursday October 1st just before the company hits the road for their ten week tour. The performance will run approximately 70 minutes and is appropriate for middle and high school ages (as well as adults) as it will include some stage fighting and scenes of violence inherent to the play.

Opening All Our Gifts

Have you ever wondered which gifts God has given you? Not just in terms of money or time, but in terms of spiritual gifts and passions for ministry?

Have you ever wanted to participate in CtK programs and events, but have not been sure how to fit in, or what you would be good at? Have you ever questioned what personal qualities you may possess and how they may be of assistance to others?

If you answered “yes” to any of the questions above, then please come to CtK on Friday, October 9th at 7:00pm for a time of story telling and discussion with fellow

followers of Jesus. Listen to and learn from a special guest panel telling their individual stories about how their personal experiences aided in their spiritual growth. We’ll discuss how we can expand and relate our own gifts and experiences into the life of the community.

Desserts, coffee, and child care will be provided. For more information please contact CJ Mayer, Merlin Nelson, Dave Hughes, or Dave Schrupp.

Opening All Our Gifts...

It is designed with the understanding that there is excellence in each person, in the unique patterns of God-given strengths you were born with and that continue throughout your life. The course is perfect for those between jobs, wondering how they might serve at and beyond Christ the King Lutheran Church, or desiring a better understanding of the gifts God has given them.

The class meets three times, and participants should attend all three sessions: Tuesday, October 27th, 6:30-9:00pm; Saturday, October 31st, 9:00am-2:30pm; Monday, November 2, 6:30-9:00pm. Cost is $10 (to cover the cost of food and materials). Childcare can be arranged if requested.

Contact Pastor Lindean for more information, and please contact the church office by October 18th to register and to receive the “pre-work” assignment and information.

Women’s Book Group October 27th The Women’s Book Group will meet at 6:30pm, Tuesday, Oct. 27th to discuss the latest book selection Gallatin Canyon...Stories by Thomas McGuane.

“Place exerts the power of destiny in these ten stories of lives uncannily recognizable and unforgettably strange. McGuane’s people are seekers, beguiled by the land’s beauty and myth, compelled by the fantasy of what a locale can offer, forced to reconcile dream and truth. The stories of Gallatin Canyon are alternately comical, dark and poignant. Rich in the wit, compassion and matchless language for which McGuane is celebrated, they are the work of a master.”

Books are available in the church office, just sign out a copy, read it and join us for discussion. Or if you have read the book already, let us know what you thought of it! Questions? Call Dawn Byrd, 587-4131.

The Wittenberg Castle Church Door Ninety-five theses were nailed to the door Of the Wittenberg old castle church So the diligent student could learn Luther’s thoughts, Could debate them, or do more research. Like a bulletin board, the door often held Some clichéd or some new information; But this time the thoughts on the door spread worldwide — And set off a great Reformation!

A Prayer Attributed to St. Francis On Sunday, October 4th during worship we will use a prayer attributed to St. Francis.

Francis was born in Assisi, Italy. He was the son of a wealthy merchant. He renounced his wealth and future inheritance and devoted himself to serving the poor. Francis described this act as being “wedding to Lady Poverty.” Under his leadership the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans) was formed and they took literally Jesus’ words to his disciples that they should take nothing on their journey and receive no payment for their work. Their task in preaching was to “use words if necessary.”

Francis’ day of commemoration has been a traditional time to bless pets and animals, creatures Francis called his brothers and sisters.

Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

Operation Christmas Child-- Start collecting now!

CtK will be collecting shoe boxes again this year for Operation Christmas Child, so start looking for the small gift items that fit in shoe boxes. I received a letter from the Phillipines that a 6-year-old girl received one of the boxes I sent last year. These boxes go all over the world to children in need. CtK-member Rejoice Mudzimiri’s brother also received a box in Africa. Last year we collected 43 boxes! Let’s try to beat that this year. The final day to collect boxes will be November 1st!

If you have any questions, please contact me, Donna Cox, CtK’s project director for OCC, 388-2979.

Treats Needed For Noah’s Ark After-School Program October is one of the months CtK volunteers provide nutritious snacks for the Salvation Army’s After-School Program “Noah’s Ark”. There is a sign-up chart in the social hall. Some suggestions include: fruit snacks, string cheese, crackers, go-gurts, fresh fruit (apples, bananas, grapes, tangerines, plums, etc.), juice boxes, homemade cookies, bars, or cupcakes, applesauce cups, pudding cups.

This fall there are only 4-5 youth participating in the program. Treats may be dropped off at the “Ark” (corner of Rouse & Babcock) anytime Monday-Friday except during the noon hour.

Library Notes . . . by Agnes Luft

There are quite a few new additions to our CtK library, please be sure to drop in and check some of them out!

Instruments In the Redeemers’ Hands by Paul David Tripp.

Tripp helps us discover where change is needed in our own lives and in the lives of others. Tripp helps us learn how to get to know people and lovingly speak truth to them. Steve Brown says this is a wonderful reminder that EVERYONE who belongs to Jesus can help others.

Peace-making Women by Tara Barthel and Judy Dabler.

This book offers a meaningful message to lead you out of conflict and into a state of peace where you can witness to other women and unbelievers. These personal stories are rooted in Scripture.

Breast Cancer and Me by Lois Olmstead

The hope-filled and sometimes humorous story of a breast cancer survivor.

CtK Friends and Family,

Thank you so much for the thoughtful gift of a handmade music stand. I have been blessed to serve as Christ the King's director of music, and the music stand will be a lovely reminder of my time in the position. I will bring in the stand when it's completed (sometime in January or February). Thanks again! Kristin Harney

Five Principles of Biblical Generosity . . . As a philanthropic adviser for Luther Seminary, Glenn Taibl came into contact with some "incredibly generous people." Reflecting on this experience Taibl said, "You would like them — they are happier and more positive than the average person. They are usually quite clear about their priorities and how these priorities are informed by their commitment to follow Jesus. Their spirit is infectious and I want to spread their spirit of faithful living."

The following is an excerpt from a sermon by Pastor Taibl in which he identifies five principles of biblical generosity. The principles are helpful guidelines for those who are ready to begin the journey toward being generous givers.

Text: 2 Corinthians By Glenn Taibl

Give Yourselves to the Lord. Not as a way to gain favor with God or to guarantee your salvation but because you are the Lord's. You are saved, loved. Surrender yourselves to who you are in Christ and celebrate what it means to be a child of God.

Generosity is a proof of faith. [Generosity] is not only in the sight of God but in the sight of others also. Let me see you as a faithful person. Let me see your actions be congruent with your words.

You give from what you have. What an opportunity this is! Take inventory of what you have: family, assets, decisions you've made for faithful living.

Create a Plan for Giving and Generosity. Faithful people need to have a spending plan because a spending plan reflects your faith. The most basic plan is this: give yourselves to the Lord.

Give Freely and Cheerfully. Don't give under compulsion. Giving freely and cheerfully is an invitation to see things in a new way. If you're not ready for this change in perspective, tuck it away, read Scripture and pray about it.

No matter what "God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work."

A prayer for pumpkin people After Liz Curtis Higgs wrote the popular children’s book The Pumpkin Patch Parable, people began using her analogies to say a prayer while carving their Halloween pumpkins. The pumpkin prayer, a Christian alternative to some Halloween traditions, reminds people of all ages what God has done for us. Use it this month when your family makes jack-o’-lanterns.

• While cutting off the top of the pumpkin, pray, “Lord, open my mind so I can learn new things about you.” (See Proverbs 1:7.) • While removing the seeds and pulp, pray, “Remove the things in

my life that don’t please you. Forgive the wrong things I do, and help me forgive others.” (See Matthew 6:14-15.) • While making eyes, pray, “Open my eyes to see the beauty you’ve made in the world around me.” (See Psalm 104:24.) • While making the nose, pray, “I’m sorry for the times I’ve turned up my nose at your many gifts.” (See James 1:17.) • While making the mouth, pray, “Let everything I say please you.” (See Psalm 19:14.) • While lighting the candle, pray, “Lord, help me show your light to others through the things I do.” (See Matthew 5:16.) After carving your pumpkins, display them as examples of how God’s love transforms us into new creations. (See 2 Corinthians 5:17.)

Ring Around the Rosy… by Dr. Jerrold Johnson

Ring around the rosy, pocket full of posies; “ashes, ashes, we all fall down!” This rhyme-game we played as children was written in the 1600’s when the Bubonic Plague (Black Plague) decimated Europe, and didn’t stop until the Great Fire of London in 1666 killed flea car-rying rats. Rose rings on the skin were marks of illness, flower scent used to mask the stench and ward off evil humors, and cremation for the fallen inspired the words. The plague was the most devastating in history until the Spanish flu of 1918. This year we have had the first wave of a world pandemic of the H1N1 flu which began in late March, with the second wave due this fall. Many, including health care workers, are balk-ing at taking the vaccine available in a few short weeks. This continues a trend of young parents failing to immunize their children be-cause of unwarranted fears of autism, etc., de-spite multiple scientific studies showing no causal relationship. Unless you are over 70 or a student of public health history, it is difficult to appreciate immunization as one of the most successful health achievements of the 20th Century. Each year standard immunizations prevent 10.5 million childhood diseases and 33 thousand deaths in the US, and save three million lives worldwide. For every dollar spent on vaccines, 10 to 20 dollars is saved—nine billion dollars a year in the US.

People yawn at statistics, but it’s another story when everyone you know has lost family members. Quarantine notices on doors, movie theatres and pools closed because of polio, and frightened parents are part of my memory. 100 years ago half of all funerals were children under five. Herd immunity helps, but if parents continue this trend of no immunizations, they will play Russian Roulette with their kid’s lives.

Last year, at my 50th medical school reun-ion, Michael T. Osterholm, PhD, MPH and world re-known communicable disease expert spoke with us about influenza. As stated, the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic has been the most catastrophic with at least 500 million, but possi-bly half the 1.6 billion world population afflicted and 100+ million deaths—a rate of 10-20%. Compare this to 34 million killed in all the 20th Century wars. The Novel (new) H1N1 virus is similar to the 1918 virus, but not yet as virulent. In 1918 the virus mutated to a more dangerous strain in the second wave. Were there no vac-

cine and our current virus became as deadly, with our 6.5 billion world population there could be 1.6 billion deaths.

In an average year flu kills 36 thousand Americans and hospitalizes 114 thousand. Most cases of the new virus (as in 1918) occur in the young, healthy 15-24 year-old age group with most deaths in the 30-50 year old popula-tion, especially those with underlying health problems or pregnant women. Young people have a robust immune system which wreaks havoc with the virus, but also the body. You can awaken well, feel sick at noon, and be dead by nightfall. In addition to killing millions, food and basic supplies will be scarce, the economy disrupted and the very fabric of civili-zation threatened.

The 2009 virus has not been powerful, but it has moved fast and we don’t know how virulent it will become.

Dr. Osterholm warned that we are long overdue for a bad epidemic. People are free to do as they wish, but considering the risk-benefit ratio, if I were a betting man all my money would be on the vaccine. As for Marga-ret and me, we’ve had the regular vaccine and will get the Swine Flu vaccine as soon as it is available.

Dr. Jerry Johnson graciously writes this column for CtK and his former congregation in Reno. He welcomes your comments and discussion with him of any of these topics.

November 1st . . . Set your clocks back one hour when you retire for the evening October 31st!

Annual Cereal Drive Another Success Story! Thanks to everyone that brought cereal for our annual cereal drive for the Gallatin Valley Food Bank. We collected over 200 boxes (230 as of 9/27). We will continue to collect cereal and canned soups all year. (All donations are welcome!) We will continue to make runs to the Food Bank on a regular basis.
