SAINT STEPHEN (first century)

December 26

“A man filled with faith and the Holy Spirit” (Acts 6:5): thus

Luke introduces Stephen, first of seven deacons chosen by the

community for its ministry of charity, first to lay down his life

in witness to Christ. As the church’s first martyr, Stephen’s

life and death mirror the preaching and passion of Jesus, “the

faithful witness” (Greek, martyr) (Revelation 1:5). Like Jesus,

Stephen works “great signs and wonders among the people”

(Acts 6:8). Like Jesus, when falsely accused, Stephen’s face

radiates angelic serenity (Acts 6:15), though his tongue, like

Jesus’, is a two-edged sword. As the dying Jesus forgave his

executioners, even making excuses for them, then commended

his spirit into his Father’s hands (Luke 23:34, 46), so Stephen

intercedes for his murderers and begs Jesus to receive his

spirit (Acts 7:60, 59). How fruitful both passions! The penitent

thief inherits Paradise; Saul, who consented to Stephen’s

killing, is transformed into the fearless preacher Paul. Thus

Stephen challenges us to bear witness not in words only, but

by Christ-like forgiveness toward all.

DEVOTIONAL PRACTICE

Mission Month In addition to being the month of the rosary, October

is devoted to the missions. It was during this month in 1492

that the secular Franciscan Christopher Columbus brought the

first Christians to the American continent. In addition, various

missionary saints such as Francis of Assisi, Paul of the Cross,

and Teresa of the Child Jesus are commemorated during this

month. One of these saints, Antonio María Claret, was Bishop

of Cuba and founder of the Missionary Sons of the

Immaculate Heart of Mary (the Claretians). He founded this

order our of his zeal for the mission of Christ in the holy

Gospels. He recommended that Christians should read the

Gospels daily to prepare themselves to serve God.

All of our American countries were evangelized by

religious missionaries. Many of them left their families in

Europe in order to dedicate themselves to serve our native and

mestizo populations by bringing them the word of God. But

these religious missionaries were helped by priests and lay

women and men who also left their native lands.

In time, new Christians also helped these foreign

missionaries in their work. Persons like Juan Diego, Rose of

Lima, and Martin de Porres also responded to the call of Jesus,

who asked us to take the Good News to all nations, baptizing

them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the

Holy Spirit.

A missionary is not necessarily someone who leaves

home to preach the gospel to others abroad. True missionaries

unite their lives to the mission of Jesus by living the gospel

whether at home, at work, in the parish, or if God asks, in

SAINT PATRICK’S HOME

It is great pleasure that St. Patrick’s Nursing

Home will be receiving the Pilgrim Statue of Our

Lady of Fatima on Wednesday the 13th

of

November. The Statue will arrive there at 9: 00am.

Mass will be offered at 10:00am; there will be a

short talk about the statue after mass, then

exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, and Rosary

will follow. The Statue leaves at 3:00pm.

SISTER OF LIFE

Sanación después del aborto. ¿Conoces a alguien que lleve el sufrimiento del aborto? Siempre hay esperanza. El dolor y la pena del aborto no necesitan perdurar para toda la vida. SAN ESTEBAN (Siglo I)

26 de diciembre

El libro de los Hechos de los Apóstoles describe a Esteban,

uno de los primeros siete diáconos de la Iglesia naciente, como

un “hombre “lleno de fe y del Espíritu Santo”. Como diácono,

según lo pedido por la comunidad, se dedicó al cuidado de los

huérfanos y de las viudas. Además de eso, se dedicó a predicar

la salvación por medio de Jesucristo. Su predicación incomodó

a algunos líderes religiosos quienes sobornaron a otras

personas para que declararan que Esteban había blasfemado

contra Moisés, pero no fue así. Sin embargo, Esteban les

recordó que Dios no sólo estaba en el Templo de Jerusalén y

además les reprochó su incumplimiento de la ley y el rechazo

al mensaje de Jesús. Esto les molestó mucho y “Esteban les

dijo que veía los cielos abiertos y al Hijo del hombre de pie a

la derecha de Dios”. Llenos de rabia se lanzaron contra él, lo

sacaron de la ciudad y lo apedrearon hasta matarlo. Mientras

agonizaba, oraba así: “Señor Jesús, recibe mi espíritu”. San

PRACTICAS DEVOCIONALES

Mes de las misiones Además de ser el mes del Rosario, octubre es el mes

de las misiones porque fue durante este mes en 1492 que el

terciario franciscano Cristóbal Colon trajo los primeros

cristianos al continente americano. También lo es porque

varios santos misioneros como Francisco de Asís, Pablo de la

Cruz y Teresita del Niño Jesús son conmemorados durante

este mes. Uno de estos santos, Antonio María Claret, fue

obispo de Cuba y fundador de los Hijos Misioneros del

Corazón Inmaculado de María (claretianos). Él fundó su orden

basando su afán por la misión de Cristo en los santos

evangelios. Recomendaba que los cristianos leyéramos

diariamente el Evangelio para disponernos al servicio del

Señor.

Todos nuestros países americanos fueron

evangelizados por misioneros y misioneras religiosos. Muchos

de ellos dejaron sus familias en Europa para dedicarse a servir

nuestros pueblos nativos y mestizos con la Palabra de Dios.

Pero estos misioneros religiosos también fueron ayudados por

sacerdotes, mujeres y laicos que también dejaron su país de

origen.

Con el tiempo, los nuevos cristianos también

ayudaron a estos misioneros extranjeros a llevar a cabo su

obra misionera. Personas como Juan Diego, Rosa de Lima y

Martín de Porres también respondieron al llamado de Jesús

que nos pidió llevar la Buena Nueva a todas las naciones

bautizándolos en el nombre del Padre, del Hijo, y del Espíritu

Santo.

Un misionero no necesariamente es la persona que deja su

nación para predicar el Evangelio a otros pueblos. El

verdadero misionero es aquella persona que une su vida a la

misión de Jesús viviendo el Evangelio ya sea en su hogar, su

trabajo, su parroquia o si Dios así lo pide, en otras tierras. Fray

Yo comparto el traspatio de mi casa con cuatro

estudiantes universitarios. Rafael es uno de ellos. Lo

primero que hace Rafael en la mañana es salir por la

puerta trasera con una bolsa llena de nueces para las

ardillas. Ellas pasan el tiempo en nuestro manzano

igual que los adolescentes lo pasan en los centros

comerciales. Una de las ardillas se ha vuelto

particularmente atrevida y ahora espera a Rafael justo

en la puerta trasera. Últimamente la ardilla no se va,

no importa el momento del día ni quién esté en el

traspatio. Hayan nueces o no, personas o no, la ardilla

no se va. Como se ha puesto latosa yo la ignoro la

mayoría de las veces. Rafael no, pero yo sí. No

obstante, la ardilla poco a poco va llamando mi

atención. En el transcurso de mi vida Dios también me

está llamando la atención.

Al escuchar la parábola del Evangelio de esta semana

acerca de la viuda que no se cansaba de suplicarle al

juez la gente tiende a pensar que la historia se refiere a

Dios, que con el tiempo se rinde ante la viuda. Yo

creo que es más bien una historia acerca de mí,

rindiéndome ante Dios. Espero que Dios no se ofenda

por compararlo con una ardilla, pero Dios se parece

mucho más a la ardilla (o a la viuda) que al juez. A mi

parecer, Dios es quien suplica. Aunque la parábola

parece decir: “No te descorazones, con el tiempo Dios

escucha y responde”, tal vez lo que diga es: “No te

descorazones, Dios no se cansará de suplicarte”.

REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD

My house shares a back yard with four college students. Ryan is one of them. Every morning the first thing Ryan does is go out the back door with a bagful of nuts and feed the squirrels. They hang out in our apple tree the way teenagers hang out around malls. One of the squirrels has become particularly bold and now waits expectantly for Ryan right at the back door. Lately the squirrel won’t go away, no matter the time of day, no matter who’s in the back yard. The squirrel just won’t leave, nuts or no nuts, people or no people. Because it’s become pesky, I now ignore the squirrel most of the time. Though Ryan doesn’t, I do. Nevertheless, the squirrel is slowly getting my attention. Over the course of my lifetime, God is getting my attention, too. People tend to hear this week’s Gospel parable about the widow who keeps knocking on the judge’s door as a story about God who eventually gives in to the widow. I think it’s more a story about me eventually giving in to God. I hope God’s not offended by being compared to a squirrel, but God is much more like the squirrel (or the widow) than like the judge. God’s the one who does the pleading, it seems to me. While the parable seems to say, “Don’t lose heart; God will eventually hear and answer,” perhaps it’s really saying, “Don’t lose heart; God will not give up knocking on your door.” —Rev. Joseph J.
