From the Pastor’s Desk I want to begin by thanking everyone who has been so suppor ve of not only our new Parish Hall fundraiser, but also of me personally in my goal of comple ng my tenth Chicago Marathon. I’m happy to say that I finished the race last Sunday – although, if you look for my official results online, you might not find them! Apparently, there was a problem with the electronic ming chip in my bib number, and it did not register my mes (throughout the race, the athletes run over a ming mat that records their me; it’s a way

to track the runners and make sure that they complete the en re distance). I let the Marathon office know about the issue, and at the

me that I wrote this, I was wai ng to hear back from them. Regardless, I know that I ran the en re race, and I kept track of my me. As always, I finished towards the end of the pack (hey, not everyone can be an elite runner!) My me was 5:47:38. Even though this might seem slow to some people, I am thrilled to say that this was my fastest marathon me since 2014! As I men oned last week, I was worried if I was even going to finish because I did not have much me at all to devote to training for this year’s marathon. And yet, I should have trusted more in God’s grace! I think that part of the reason why I did be er this year than the past seven years is because I was doing this tenth marathon as a parish fundraiser, so I really wanted to do well. Many people have been very generous in dona ng to this fundraiser for our Parish Hall –

and because they were willing to give of themselves, I wanted to make sure to give this race my best effort too. We s ll have dona ons coming in, so I might wait one or two more weeks to let you know how much we’ve raised, but I will say that this fundraiser has already been much more successful than I had an cipated – again, thanks to all of you who donated! So, I will keep you updated. And I’ve also included a photo here of me a er crossing the finish line (and I’m holding up ten fingers to signify my tenth marathon).

I do want to men on two other things this week. First, our Knights of Columbus will be hos ng a Trunk or Treat in the church parking lot this Wednesday, Oct. 20th from 7-8pm. This is a free event for the community. Everyone is invited to come in costume and bring some goodie bags so that we can fill the trunks of cars with candy. This event will give children a safe place to do some trick-or-trea ng. We will also vote for the best trunk, so be crea ve if you plan to enter your car in the compe on!

And second, it has been some me since we celebrated the sacrament of the Anoin ng of the Sick at a weekend Mass. So, we will offer the sacrament of Anoin ng at the three weekend Masses on Oct. 30-31. I will say a few words about this sacrament in my homily at those Masses, but basically, this sacrament is intended for those who have a genuine need for it – meaning that you do not need to have a serious or terminal illness to receive it, but it is also not intended for something like the common cold.

Holy Virgin Martyrs, pray for us. May God bless you.

Fr. Rob

Readings For The Week

Monday: 2 Tm 4:10-17b; Ps 145:10-13, 17-18; Lk 10:1-9 Tuesday: Rom 5:12, 15b, 17-19, 20b-21; Ps 40:7-10, 17; Lk 12:35-38 Wednesday: Rom 6:12-18; Ps 124:1b-8; Lk 12:39-48 Thursday: Rom 6:19-23; Ps 1:1-4, 6; Lk 12:49-53 Friday: Rom 7:18-25a; Ps 119:66, 68, 76-77, 93-94; Lk 12:54-59 Saturday: Rom 8:1-11; Ps 24:1b-4ab, 5-6; Lk 13:1-9 Sunday: Jer 31:7-9; Ps 126:1-6; Heb 5:1-6; Mk 10:46-52

FEAST OF FAITH Only Say the Word

The bread is broken, the banquet is prepared, and now we are invited to the feast. Once more the priest holds the host, now broken, for us to see, and invites us to behold the one “who takes away the sins of the world.” Truly blessed and happy are those invited to this meal, which is a foretaste of the heavenly banquet, the supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:19). We respond to this invitation with a prayer to the Lord: we acknowledge that we are not worthy, but at the same time we are confident that the One who comes to us can heal us, body and soul. This prayer echoes the story of the centurion in Luke’s Gospel. The centurion, a Gentile, asks healing for his servant, but does not consider himself worthy to have Jesus come under his roof—he believes that Jesus can heal his servant with a word, without even seeing him. Jesus is amazed at his faith. It is the same for us. We believe that Jesus speaks to us, comes to us, dwells with us, even though we neither hear his voice nor see his face. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

THE HUMANITY OF JESUS CHRIST All three readings today support—each in its own way, of course—a reflection on the humanity of Jesus Christ and how that humanity played a key role in the drama of our salvation. Although not chosen specifically to coordinate with the other two readings, today’s second reading does in fact carry forward the theme of Christ’s humanity in a remarkable way. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews highlights the solidarity that exists between Jesus and us, precisely because in his human nature Jesus has known the same sufferings and testing that are our own experience. Because he can “sympathize with our weaknesses,” we can “approach the throne of grace to receive mercy.” For the author of Hebrews, the humanity of Jesus was an essential requirement for his redemptive death, as well as an invitation to us to find in Jesus someone with whom we can identify in our daily struggles. Beginning this weekend, our parish will be participating in The Baby Bottle Project benefiting The Women’s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. This non-profit organization directly assist mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering emotional, financial, material, and spiritual support through counseling, clothing, monetary provisions, prayer and other aid. By God’s Grace, the Women’s Centers have saved over 40,000 babies—and their mothers—from abortion since opening in 1984. If you are making a donation by check, please make it payable to the Women’s Center. You can also donate online at GoTWC.org or by calling 773-794-1313. Thank You!

What We’re Learning Kindergarten (Tuesdays) We learned that God is our heavenly Father and that Jesus called God Abba, which means daddy. We learned that God provides for us and never stops loving us. We learned that Jesus is the Son of God and our Friend. We learned that Jesus wants to know us and have us come to him. 1st Grade (Tuesdays) We learned that God is the creator of all things. We can find God’s gifts all around us. God created us and knows us better than an-yone else and wants to be our friend. The Bible has many stories about God and his love for us. We can show our thanks to God through prayer, sharing his gifts, and being kind to others. 2nd Grade (Tuesdays) We learned about how we belong in our church. We grow close to God and Jesus through prayer. We discussed Baptism and preparing for First Communion.
