IN-DEPTH OVERVIEW OF NFPA 10 - “Specifically Addressing the Proper Selection, Placement and Distribution of Extinguishers”

presented by J. R. Nerat Because the placement of service tags on installed fire extinguishers implies code compliance, it becomes extremely important for all service technicians to correctly recognize and identify each of the various occupancy hazard classifications, to ensure proper extinguisher ratings and travel distances are being addressed. This presentation will cover the specific NFPA-10 occupancy hazard classification requirements and attempt to explain how to accomplish this.

UNDERSTANDING CLASS “B” OBSTACLE FIRES

presented by J. R. Nerat This presentation covers the various special class “B” fire extinguisher hazard coverage requirements associated with “Obstacle” fire situa-tions, as identified within NFPA-10. (Based on the “Industrial Fire World” magazine article reprinted in the PAFED New Era newsletter)

DISCUSSION ADDRESSING COMMON FIRE EXTINGUISHER

SERVICE PROBLEMS AND MISCONCEPTIONS presented by J. R. Nerat

This presentation will discuss some of the most common fire extinguisher related complaint topics and service issues from an industry expert.

About the speaker: J.R. Nerat is the Technical Manager for Badger/Kidde Fire Protection and one of the industry’s most recognized subject matter experts. His extensive background and 38 years of active experience within the fire protection industry is highly regarded both do-mestically and internationally. Mr. Nerat serves on several NFPA technical committees and represents the NFPA Industrial Section on the Portable Extinguisher and Sys-tems technical committees. He has an exceptional range of experience and knowledge in areas of product design, testing, installation, appli-cations, litigation, and the proper service of fire protection equipment. Mr. Nerat consults for various national and state organizations, major corporations, legal firms, insurance interests, approval agencies, for-eign governments and lectures at various industry related functions including the International Industrial Fire School at Texas A&M Universi-ty, where he serves as a "Master Instructor".

REGISTERED APPRENTICESHIP - A Workforce Development Strategy presented by Eric Ramsay, Director

PA Apprenticeship and Training Office; Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry

This session will discuss the principals of apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs. It will also discuss the funding opportunities and how to build an apprenticeship eco-system. About the speaker: Eric Ramsay is the Director of Apprenticeship and Training with the Commonwealth of PA. In this role, Mr. Ramsay is responsible for all registered apprenticeship activities statewide. The goals of his office are to increase the number of apprentices statewide, educate the uninformed about the merits of registered apprenticeship, and expand into the “non-traditional” areas of apprenticeship. Eric believes that “it takes a village” to help maintain a healthy workforce system. Mr. Ramsay has been with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry for 19 years. The majority of his time at Labor and Industry was spent with the Bureau of Labor Law Compliance. He served as a Labor Law Investigator, Administrative Officer, Assistant Director and Acting Director of the Bureau before leaving to take the position as Director of the Apprenticeship and Training Office.

HANDLING CODE DISCREPANCIES ON-SITE & IN THE BACK OFFICE

Lower Allen Township (PENNBOC) This presentation will discuss common code discrepancies found during code official inspections and provide insights on how to interact with the authority having jurisdiction to resolve these issues. About the speaker: John Eby is the Building and Zoning Coordinator for Lower Allen Township, Cumberland County. He also serves on the township's development authority and emergency management agency, and chairs the Cumberland County Blighted Property Reinvestment Board. He has been administering construction and zoning codes for over 35 years, and is certified by the Commonwealth as a Building Code Official (BCO), Construction Code Official (CCO) and Sewage Enforcement Officer (SEO). He serves on the Board of Directors of PABCO, the PA State Professional Chapter of the ICC. He is also a Past President of PENNBOC.
