“If everything continues as it was, if we spend our days
content that ‘This is the way things have always been
done,’ then the gift vanishes, smothered by the ashes of
fear and concern for defending the status quo.”
Pope Francis, during his homily at the opening Mass of
the Synod of Bishops for the Amazon in St. Peter's Basil-
ica at the Vatican last Sunday, October 6. “Update: Fear,
status quo smother fire of God's love, pope says at synod
Mass.” Catholic News Service. October 6, 2019.
“Pope Francis has appointed 13 new cardinals during a
ceremony at the Vatican on Saturday, many of whom
symbolize his priorities for the Catholic Church during
his papacy and ultimately, his legacy. The Pontiff's new
cardinals have defended the commitment to fighting
populism, supported the inclusion of gay Catholics,
sought to improve inter-religious dialogue with Muslim
communities, and expressed concern with the environ-
ment and youth issues, according to their biographies.
The appointments, which can be compared to the selec-
tion of cabinet ministers upon a new government, come
from countries such as Democratic Republic of the
Congo, Angola, Indonesia, Morocco, Cuba or Guate-
mala, representing ‘the Church's missionary outreach and
universal character,’ according to Vatican News.”
“Pope appoints 13 cardinals who reflect his inclusive vi-
sion for Catholic Church.” CNN. October 5, 2019.
“The Vatican authorized an investigation Thursday into
the embattled Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo,
whose bishop has been fending off calls to resign over
his handling of clergy misconduct allegations.
The ‘apostolic visitation’ will take place in the near fu-
ture, led by Brooklyn Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio, accord-
ing to the Apostolic Nunciature in Washington, D.C.,
which is coordinating the visit for the Holy See. DiMar-
zio will submit his findings to the headquarters of the
Roman Catholic Church in Vatican City.”
“Vatican authorizes investigation into Buffalo diocese.”
Associated Press. October 7, 2019.
“I’m not afraid of dying. I’ve lived a good life, a full life,
and I’m nearing the end of that life … if it happens, why
should I be afraid that? … One thing they’re not going to
say at my funeral, as a part of a eulogy, is ‘he was taken
from us too soon.’”
79-year-old Alex Trebek, host of Jeopardy!, speaking to
CTV about his experience with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
“Alex Trebek tells Lisa LaFlamme 'I'm not afraid of dy-
ing.'” CTV News. October 4, 2019.
“Describing why we stay often sounds like an apology or
rationalization. Perhaps it is. We stay because of fellow
parents in the pews, with whom we share a liturgy of cry-
ing, questions, hushing. We stay because we hear lectors
and cantors in Côte d’Ivoire French and Burmese. We
stay because of the way our choir sings ‘All Creatures of
Our God and King.’ And we stay because it is through all
this that we see others differently, anew, and more. A
friend asked recently why I don’t choose a church that
feeds me spiritually and aligns better with some of my
personal values. My response, which surprised me more
than my friend, was, ‘I think it’s because the transubstan-
tiation matters to me.’ I came for the faith that daily life
is sacramental, that Jesus is present in moments of both
holiness and ordinariness, which grow harder to distin-
guish between the longer I am here.”
“Why I Came, Why I Stay.” Commonweal. October 6,
2019.
“I realized that I had been making the acting career the
center of my life. And you know as a Catholic, there’s
only one thing that can be the center of your life and
that’s your faith. And I think I wasn’t doing that. And I
think God was withholding everything until … He made
sure that He was the center of my life and not the career.
Because look, the career comes and goes… And you
have to know that the purpose of your life is glorifying
God with your life, not glorifying yourself with your ca-
reer.”
Actress Patricia Heaton, speaking to fellow Catholic
Stephen Colbert on the Late Show on September 27.
“Actress Patricia Heaton and Stephen Colbert get per-
sonal about their Catholic faith.” Aleteia. October 2,
2019.
“During the [Cowboys] game, they showed a shot of
George [W. Bush] and me laughing together, and so peo-
ple were upset. They thought, ‘Why is a gay Hollywood
liberal sitting next to a conservative Republican presi-
dent?’ … A lot of people were mad. And they did what
people who are mad do: they tweet. But here’s one tweet
that I love, it says, ‘Ellen and George Bush sitting to-
gether makes me have faith in America again.’ I’m friends
with George Bush. In fact, I’m friends with a lot of peo-
ple who don’t share the same beliefs that I have. We’re
all different, and I think that we’ve forgotten that that’s
okay; that we’re all different… When I say to be kind to
one another, I don’t mean only the people that think the
same way that you do. I mean be kind to everyone.”
Ellen DeGeneres, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, October 7,
2019.

STEPHEN MINISTRY MESSAGE
Disagreements happen all the time. Sometimes they
become so heated that the relationship is damaged. But
who will say, “I am sorry” first? Then things get even
harder. “The moment you say ‘I was wrong,’ you can
begin to move on.” Anne Perry. Having the courage to
say “I was wrong” is not an easy thing. Finding a way to
mend damaged relationships is hard alone. A Stephen
Minister can help you to sort through your feelings, emo-
tions, and explore ways to move on. Call Carol Hartley at
783-4036 (e-mail: [email protected]),
Larry Bartley at 965-7276 (e-mail: [email protected]) or
call the office at 783-7459 for more information.
CARE FOR CREATION: Saturday, October 19
8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Providence College – Aquinas Hall
What does the Catholic Church teach about caring for
creation? What is our responsibility toward what God has
created? This event will have several speakers who will
discuss the Catholic Church's teaching on care for crea-
tion. You will benefit from the insight offered by Dr.
Pecknold of the Catholic University of America, Dr.
Camosy of Fordham University, and Mr. Ottaro of
CYNESA, a group dedicated to addressing ecological
concerns in Africa.
If you are going and would like to share a ride please

INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK
When standing in a place of privilege, it is difficult to see
all of the wonders, healings, and graces God bestows
upon us. We can easily take God’s abiding, healing, and
sustaining presence for granted in our lives if our sights
are too focused on earthly pleasures, status, or concerns.
Those who have less often have a greater appreciation
for even the smallest of gifts and tiniest of blessings. We
live in a world of entitlement, and this error of thinking
that things are “due me” or “deserved by me” can distort
and corrupt our vision. How many times a day are you
truly thankful and filled with gratitude? If you truly treas-
ure the life God has given you, then every breath you
take can be an opportunity to express joyful appreciation.
Every moment of life is an occasion for healing and
transformation.
REFLECTION
“Ten lepers met him. They stood at a distance …” In the an-
cient world and into the Middle Ages, there was no treat-
ment for leprosy. People thought it was wildly contagious
and were suspicious of any skin diseases. Lepers were
isolated from civil society. This isolation was uphold by
the Mosaic Law. Should there be a healing from leprosy,
the former leper was to present himself to a priest to cer-
tify the healing. Like Jesus commands, “Show yourselves to
the priests.” The person would then undergo a religious
rite to be formally reintroduced to society. In other
words, a leper got their life back. So why didn’t they
come back?
“As they were going they were cleansed. And one of them, realizing
he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he
fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him.” Of the ten lepers
healed by Christ, only one returns with a grateful heart.
The others, perhaps, were thankful enough. Perhaps they
couldn’t believe their luck, and they hastened to the
priests to confirm the healing. They were more than will-
ing to leave their life of rejection and isolation behind.
Why take any steps backward, when the way ahead was
so attractive? An attitude like this is perhaps understand-
able, but few would admire it.
How about you? Do you come back? If you’ve ever had
the experience of getting what you hoped and prayed for,
you know that this can sometimes be easier said than
done. When we’ve wanted something badly enough, how
easy it can be to focus on the gift rather than the giver.
The truth is, God is daily offering us gifts: the gift of our
existence, of the created world, of family and friends, of
modern conveniences. Even in times of distress, there is
always something to be thankful for. This Sunday, give
yourself a gratitude check. Count your blessings. Glorify
God and thank Him for the gift of your life!
