Just days after revealing that he had cancer, Brooklyn District

Attorney Kenneth P. Thompson died on Sunday from his illness.

A New York City native, Thompson grew up in a Harlem public housing complex before moving to Co-op City in the Bronx. His mother, a former cop, was one of the fi rst female NYPD offi cers to patrol the streets.

Thompson attended the city’s public schools and attended the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, later obtaining a law degree from the New York University School of Law.

Thompson released a statement on October 4 stating that he had cancer and would take a medical leave from his job to seek treatment.

On Sunday evening, October 9, his offi ce released another statement announcing his passing.

Thompson died at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital with his family at his side, according to the statement.

prosecuting low-level marijuana offenses.In 2013, he established a conviction review

unit that moved to vacate the convictions of 21 people who were wrongfully imprisoned for murder and other offenses.

Thompson also founded a series of “Begin Again” events, providing Brooklyn residents an opportunity to deal with summonses for low-level offenses quickly and easily. The summons warrants, which are ordered when people fail to answer a ticket for minor quality of life offenses such as drinking alcohol in public or being in a park after closing, are diffi cult to navigate within an overburdened

courts system and can hold back individuals who have them on their records. The Begin Again events offered affected individuals confi dential, one-on-one screenings with Legal Aid attorneys on how to resolve their warrants and on any other legal issues they had.

By the DA’s offi ce count, nearly 2,000 warrants were cleared over the four events held to date.

Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered all fl ags to half-staff in honor of Thompson.

“Ken was a dedicated public servant who

embodied the highest principles of the law, and his grand presence will be sorely missed,” Cuomo said in a statement.

Thompson is survived by his wife of 17 years, Lu-Shawn, and two children, Kennedy and Kenny.

As District Attorney, Thompson was involved in the prosecution of former NYPD offi cer Peter Liang, who fatally shot Akai Gurley, an unarmed black man, in a housing project stairwell in 2014.

No lambs for this Mary; she was a lion.

This past Sat., Oct. 8th, friends, family, neighbors, and members of the International Lions Club gathered on the corner of 170th Street and Broadway in Washington Heights to celebrate the life of one of its most industrious residents.

The street corner was graced with a new name: The Mary Jane Matos Way.

Local resident Matos served for over three decades as a member and leader within the Lions Club International, considered the world’s largest service organization with over 1.4 million members worldwide. It is also one of the longest running service organizations, as next year it will celebrate its centennial anniversary. Volunteers provide low-income communities around the world with health, international relations, children and youth, and environmental programs.

Among the services Matos provided in 34 years of work was help for the blind, food and clothing for the homeless, and Christmas gifts for needy children.

“Because of her merits and strong leadership, Mary Jane Matos became a Lions Club District Governor,” recalled District Governor Guillermo “Ali” Pérez. “She left us

a legacy, which is to respond to human needs with great love. I think it’s great that New York is recognizing our servants.”

The event was held in the shadow of the building where Matos lived for 50 years. Matos’ son Tommy Meléndez, looked on as the new sign was unveiled.

“I owe everything to my mother,” he said.“She was someone who lived to serve,”

said Councilmember Ydanis Rodríguez, who led the co-naming effort in the City Council.

“In the 80’s and 90’s, our community was dangerous with drug problems and crime. Mary Jane was always committed to serving her community, which needed a lot of work,” he added. “When she joined the Lions Club in

City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito wants New Yorkers to stand up and cheer for their sports teams, while also taking a stand against domestic violence.

In collaboration with the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence and local pro sports franchises, Mark-Viverito has launched #NotAFan, a campaign of video public service announcements (PSAs) that denounce domestic violence.

The dramatic, 30-second spots feature current or former stars from several area teams — Yankees manager Joe Girardi, Mets closer Jeurys Familia, former Knicks favorite John Starks, Rangers Hall of Famer Rod Gilbert, Liberty star Kiah Stokes and Cosmos star Lucky Mkosana.

Along with players announcing that they

are against domestic violence, the edgy videos feature audio from actual 911 calls reporting domestic violence incidents.

“We want New Yorkers to know that they can be a Yankees fan, a Mets fan, a Liberty fan, a Knicks fan, a Cosmos fan, and a Rangers fan, but not a fan of domestic violence,” said Mark-Viverito.

On October 5 in Times Square, Mark-Viverito gathered with anti-violence advocates to announce the campaign. The PSA spots were then unveiled on one of Times Square’s giant video screens.

The PSAs will continue to be shown in Times Square throughout October, known as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and will also be seen on the YES Network, MSG Network, Taxi TV and in the city’s arenas and stadiums.

At the PSA unveiling, domestic violence survivor Julie Stahl spoke about her harrowing experiences 20 years ago when she was routinely beaten by her boyfriend.

She said that domestic violence can completely destroy a victim’s concept of self-worth.

“You really begin to hate yourself,” she remarked. “I thought if he killed me, at least I wouldn’t have to deal with the pain anymore.”

Stahl said that through her network of friends, she eventually found the courage to leave her abuser.

“If you know someone suffering from domestic violence, the best thing you can do is try to build up their confi dence to get help,” she said.

Michael Polenberg, Vice President of Government Affairs at advocacy group Safe Horizon, said that society’s recognition of domestic violence is broadening.

“If you think of where the domestic violence movement was just three years ago, people thought it wasn’t their problem,” he remarked. “The NYPD didn’t even have domestic violence training.”

“People should no longer think ‘It doesn’t concern me,’ or ‘It’s a private matter between the couple,” remarked Stahl. “Or, people dismiss it because she or he didn’t press charges.”

The campaign also urges fans to wear purple along with their team gear, and post photos of themselves on social media using the hashtag #NotAFan.

It was recently announced that recipients of food benefi ts in New York will soon have another boost to count on.

$9.5 million in federal funding has been awarded to 39 organizations throughout the state to assist New Yorkers receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefi ts with entering the job market.

Each of the organizations will match funds, resulting in $19 million to support education and training for SNAP recipients to enter the workforce.

“This administration has fought long and hard to help lift our most vulnerable New Yorkers out of poverty and provide them with the opportunity for a decent life,” said Gov. Andrew Cuomo in a statement. “This funding will assist with our efforts, providing much needed job training and workforce development, and brings us closer to a stronger, better, fairer New York for all.”The state’s Offi ce of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) received the federal funding and dispersed it to the 39 organizations statewide through the SNAP Employment and Training Venture

After a series of trying times, Inwood artist

Carol Diamond began collecting shattered glass and other debris. While her previous paintings were bright, recent ones were black and white, with only hints of color. Little by little, she integrated shiny smashed cans and sparkling glass shards, adding more life, color and balance into her work.

The resulting works are presented in the exhibit “Domes to Debris: Paintings and Collage,” now on view at the Armin and Estelle Gold Wing Gallery at the Hebrew Tabernacle until October 26.

Diamond’s early work focused on landscapes, bridges and sculptural architecture. “I worked from observation for many years,” she said. “And I was really devoted to perceptual painting.”

But for the past decade and a half,

Diamond’s work has become more abstract. “I really wanted to start from a blank canvas and see what happened,” she said. “I didn’t want to go out chasing subjects anymore.”

That led to interesting detours of incorporating more drawing on canvas. She also began collecting shattered glass. Eventually she added fl attened cans, plaster,

cement and wood, basically re-confi guring urban streetscapes in collage.

Houses of worship also feature prominently in the show.

Medieval is a study in interlocking geometry. Diamond takes on the challenge

of representing deep space on fl at surfaces. Spirals, arches, domes and rosette windows simultaneously recede back and spring forth in cubist planes.

Cedric Steed lived in deplorable conditions during his three-year

stay in a Brooklyn three-quarter house.

“There were bed bugs, no hot water, and it was intensely overcrowded,” he recalled. “There were 16 people staying in a single room.”

Steed joined other tenants and housing advocates on the steps of City Hall on October 5 to protest abuses in the city’s three-quarter housing, a temporary state of housing aimed at individuals exiting treatment or incarceration, and which falls somewhere between regulated halfway houses and permanent housing.

The group was protesting in advance of a City Council hearing to ponder a legislative

package that would better regulate the three-quarter housing sector and afford better protection for tenants, who have accused landlords of taking advantage of residents by forcing them to live in unacceptable conditions.

“We know that abusive landlords having been preying on New York’s most vulnerable residents, like the formerly incarcerated, drug users and the homeless,” said Bobby Tolbert, a board member of

advocacy group Vocal-NY. “That ain’t right. The people are asking our City Council to stand up and respond to this problem.”

Joining protestors at City Hall were Public Advocate Letitia James, and Councilmembers Corey Johnson, Donovan Richards, Jumaane Williams, Stephen Levin and Rafael Espinal.

“We all know that housing and services are needed if you want to stay out of jail and stay off the streets and stay off of drugs,” remarked Public Advocate Letitia James. “But throughout the city, there are too many predatory and fraudulent operators who take advantage of a vulnerable population.”

Michael Grinthal, an attorney with MFY Legal Services, said that three-quarter house tenants have little legal recourse against operators and landlords, and diffi culty accessing services and relocation benefi ts from the Department of Housing and Preservation, (HPD), because they are only temporary residents of their housing and cannot show proper proof of residency.

“The system doesn’t work for three-quarter houses,” said Grinthal.

“Too often, tenants of three-quarter houses are denied relocation services because they Protestors gathered at City Hall.

“It’s about increasing awareness,” Mark-Viverito said. “The way we change reality is to say we’re not going to tolerate it anymore.”

“Although this campaign is aimed at sports fans, it’s really meant for everyone,” said Stahl.

Though most of the major professional sports were represented in the PSAs, football was a notable exception.

Mark-Viverito said that both local National Football League (NFL) football teams, the Giants and Jets, were approached about appearing in the video spots, but elected not to participate.

In response, the teams noted that they already have affi liation with numerous local anti-violence groups, including Jersey Battered Women Services and My Sister’s Place.

Mark-Viverito said she still hoped the NFL teams would join the campaign in the future, and explained that other partners will be added as the program moves along.

“We’ll continue to grow and other teams will be added,” she stated.

The Council Speaker has been outspoken in recent months against professional athletes involved in domestic violence incidents — she slammed the Mets for signing shortstop José Reyes after he was suspended for allegedly harming his wife, and criticized the Giants after kicker Josh Brown was suspended for

only one game after a domestic violence arrest in 2015.

The Council will invest $14 million over the next three years into domestic violence-related programs.

Mark-Viverito said that the #NotAFan campaign is a way for sports fans to root for their teams, while still stating that they don’t approve of domestic violence.

She called on sports leagues to dish out harsher penalties to athletes guilty of violent

offenses.“How sports leagues handle domestic

violence is a microcosm of society,” she said.“It’s not okay to hide this, to say this is a

private matter,” said Polenberg. “It’s a serious crime that deserves a serious response.”

While serving as a federal prosecutor in the Eastern District of New York, Thompson also helped prosecute former NYPD cop Justin Volpe in the 1997 beating and torture of Abner Louima.

Elected offi cials weighed in on Thompson’s sudden passing.

More than 50 percent of public housing units reinspected

by the city’s Department of Investigations (DOI) were found to have safety defi ciencies, while New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) staffers were found to be submitting false reports claiming that maintenance checks were performed that weren’t actually done, according to an investigation by DOI.

The investigation was prompted by an April 2016 fi re at NYCHA’s Butler Houses in the Bronx, which killed two young children, 18-month-old Amanda Jabie and her sister Jannubi, age 2. Neighbors and other witnesses

at the Webster Avenue housing complex reported that they did not hear smoke alarms at the time of the fi re.

A NYCHA maintenance worker had been inside the apartment just four hours before the fi re occurred, and learned that a smoke alarm was broken, yet falsely fi lled out a report stating that the apartment’s smoke alarms were working, the DOI reported.

As part of its investigation, DOI randomly inspected 240 apartments

recently visited by NYCHA maintenance workers. The agency found that 53 percent of those units had at least one safety feature missing, and that workers often falsifi ed documents related to inspections of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

According to NYCHA policy, maintenance staff are required to document the condition of six critical apartment safety issues each

time they enter a unit, including checking for window guards, working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and fi re safety procedure stickers.

The agency also discovered that NYCHA management offi ces had failed to properly maintain work orders, having lost 104 of the 240 original work orders, which were then unavailable for review.

NYCHA found negligent

The fi ndings were released on October 4 by DOI Commissioner Mark G. Peters.

“Once again, a DOI investigation has determined that the city’s failure to follow the rules has put children in real danger, just like prior investigations over the past two years into the FDNY, DOH, DHS and of course ACS,” said Peters. “DOI has now found that NYCHA workers blatantly fl outed basic precautions, supervisors failed to check on them, and tragedy was the result.”

As a result of the investigation, DOI has

referred a total of eight maintenance workers and one Assistant Superintendent to NYCHA for disciplinary action.

In addition, DOI made several recommendations to NYCHA to ensure proper completion of safety checks and adequate documentation. NYCHA has accepted each of these recommendations and already begun implementation, reported DOI.

One of the bills under consideration by the Council, Intro 1171, would require HPD to accept alternate documentation for providing benefi ts.

Advocates also accused three-quarter house landlords of engaging in Medicaid fraud, and forcing tenants to attend drug treatment sessions they don’t really need, while threatening to evict them if they don’t comply.

Alberto Charriez currently resides in a three-quarter house, said he has been clean from drugs for nearly two months. Yet his landlord is making him go to daily treatment sessions, which prevented him from keeping his job.

“I had to quit my job, otherwise I would

have lost the roof over my head,” said Charriez. “It’s hard to even afford a Metrocard now.”

Intro 1168, one of the proposed bills, would prevent landlords from forcing tenants into treatment programs.

“Landlords have no business dictating tenants’ medical treatment,” said Grinthal. “Intro 1168 would ensure that any tenant subject to such interference in medical decision-making can sue their landlord for harassment.”

Other bills in the package would ease access to relocation services after a vacate order in houses with the most hazardous conditions, implement widespread distribution of know-your-rights information to three-quarter house tenants, and require regular reporting on inspections and relocations by the city’s interagency Three-Quarter House Taskforce.

“No one should be allowed to exploit low-

income tenants and deprive them of their basic rights,” said Johnson. “This legislation is going to restore dignity and justice to many tenants in New York and ensure that they’re informed of their rights against illegal eviction.”

In his remarks, Johnson revealed some personal information, noting that he once battled alcoholism but had been clean and sober for the past seven years.

“I was lucky that when I got sober, I had a job, I had a roof over my head, I had a Metrocard,” remarked Johnson, noting that many three-quarter housing dwellers are exiting treatment programs for addiction. “But there are many, many New Yorkers that aren’t as fortunate.”

Councilmember Jumaane Williams stated that it was imperative for the Council to take action to protect three-quarter housing tenants.

“A city and a government will be judged on how its most vulnerable citizens are being treated,” he remarked.

At the Council hearing that followed the rally, Department of Social Services/Human Resources Administration (DSS/HRA) Commissioner Steven Banks told Councilmembers that it was suspected that as many as 10,000 New Yorkers reside in three-quarter housing, but explained that the exact number of buildings providing such services is diffi cult to track.

“Very little data exists on how many three-quarter houses exist in New York City,” said Banks, who reported that DSS/HRA metrics have indicated there are 95 buildings citywide providing this type of housing.

He explained that most of his agency’s data is compiled through 311 complaints and reports from housing advocates.

Undocumented immigrants in New York say they’ll release

their personal tax returns if all the presidential candidates release theirs.

Immigrants and faith leaders gathered at the Judson Memorial Church on Mon., Oct. 10th to say they are tired of being used as scapegoats by politicians who claim they take jobs and services, giving nothing in return.

Ravi Ragbir, Executive Director of the New Sanctuary Movement, said undocumented workers do pay their fair share and they’re willing to prove it.

Undocumented Immigrants Pledge to Release Tax Returns

The group is an interfaith network of congregations, organizations, and individuals that advocates in solidarity with families and communities resisting detention and deportation in order to stay together.

“They are putting themselves at risk because all the information will be public, but they are willing to take that risk,” he said.

A study released earlier this year by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy found that, nationwide, undocumented immigrants pay almost $12 billion a year in state and local taxes alone. The study can be found at http://bit.ly/1U7rcLu.

The institute report found that undocumented immigrants pay an average tax rate of eight percent, while the top one percent

of U.S. taxpayers pay less than fi ve-and-a-half percent.

And Ragbir pointed out that undocumented immigrants also pay into Social Security.

“And they cannot claim anything in the future until they get documentation,” he added. “So they have been the saving grace for Social Security for many American citizens.”

The Social Security Administration has estimated that undocumented immigrants pay about $13 billion (the report can be found at http://bit.ly/29ljgCj) a year in Social Security taxes, while getting only about $1 billion back.

Banks stressed that the city has dramatically enhanced efforts to protect tenants in the three-quarter housing sector, forming the Three-Quarter Housing Task Force in June 2015. He noted that Mayor Bill de Blasio was motivated to create the task force following an exposé on three-quarter housing abuses.

As of October 4, the task force had conducted 169 inspections across the 95 buildings, and moved 428 single adults from these buildings into temporary emergency housing due to unsafe conditions, said Banks.

He noted concerns his agency has with Intro 1171, explaining that DSS/HRA works with each client individually to account for their unique circumstances.

“We believe that legislating eligibility documentation prevents us from having full fl exibility and the ability to change as needed, particularly for the benefi t of tenants,” Banks stated.

While Banks advised the Council that the city supports the move for legislation, he said there would need to be changes to the bills before receiving the administration’s full backing.

Banks pledged that his agency would work with the Council going forward to refi ne the bills.

Explicó que la mayor parte de la información de su agencia es compilada a través de 311 quejas e informes de los defensores de la vivienda.

“Nuestros métricas están limitadas por la capacidad de las personas para ocultar sus operaciones”, declaró Banks. “Con frecuencia, los operadores dejan de usar un edifi cio y se mudan a otro. Los propietarios que no utilizan la asistencia

pública como su fuente de fondos no pueden precisarse”.

Banks destacó que la ciudad ha mejorado drásticamente los esfuerzos para proteger a los inquilinos en el sector de la vivienda de tres cuartos, formando el Grupo de Trabajo de Vivienda de tres cuartos en junio de 2015. Señaló que el alcalde Bill de Blasio fue motivado a crear el grupo de

trabajo después de una exposición sobre abusos de vivienda de tres cuartos.

Al 4 de octubre, el grupo de trabajo había llevado a cabo 169 inspecciones a través de 95 edifi cios, y mudó a 428 adultos solteros de estos edifi cios a viviendas temporales de emergencia por falta de seguridad, dijo Banks.

Señaló las preocupaciones que su agencia tiene con Intro 1171, explicando que el DSS/HRA trabaja con cada cliente de forma individual para tener en cuenta sus circunstancias únicas.

“Creemos que legislar la documentación de elegibilidad nos impediría tener una total fl exibilidad y la capacidad de cambiar según sea necesario, en particular en benefi cio de los inquilinos”, declaró Banks.

Si bien Banks recomendó al Concejo que la ciudad apoye la legislación, dijo que tendría que haber cambios en los proyectos de ley antes de recibir el pleno respaldo de la administración.

Delving into concepts of spiritual architecture appeals to Diamond because it offers a sense of protection and structure while contemplating the meaning of life—not only as an artist, but also as a being in a vast universe.

“These places are refl ective,” she said. “They bring you into your soul, into your mind.”

Her art has resonances with a Kabbalistic idea that 10 vessels too fragile to contain divine light shattered, scattering light everywhere. These shattered vessels become the world and the souls of people. Once enough sparks have been reclaimed and collected, the world can be repaired.

Diamond said that while she’s never formally studied these concepts, they have signifi cance in her own life. “These metaphors happen in art-making. You can’t plan it, it just happens and you run with it,” she said.

Since the show coincides with the Jewish High Holy Days, curator Regina Gradess said it might inspire viewers to explore their own internal progressions.

“When I see the painting Stained Glass, I see the soul rearranging itself through the holiness of communal time together,” said Gradess. “When I see Blue Rush, I see the world that we live in and the chores of staying alive. Together they help us see-saw from one to another.”
