SOURIS SCHOOL NEWSLETTER http://schools.shmb.ca/sci. Number 5, October 26, 2012 NEWS FROM MR. WILLIAMS Hi, everyone. Yikes!!! It was a little cold and windy this morning. I guess it is time to pull out the big coat, toque, and mitts. Pretty soon the snow will be falling and we will be brushing snow from our windshields. I would like to remind everyone about access to the school parking lot during student drop-off prior to school and student pick-up after school. There should be no vehicles entering and/or exiting the East entrance of the parking lot between 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. and between 2:45 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Simply put, if you see a bus sitting in the Loading/Unloading area do not drive past it because it is either loading or unloading students. The fine for doing so is over $500. Also, please do not park in the No Parking areas on the street opposite the Elementary end of the building – Lansdowne Street - as it is a No Parking Zone. We thank you, in advance, for your continued cooperation. We have just about arrived at our first reporting period of the year. Southwest Horizon School Division is one of the school divisions across Manitoba that is piloting the new Provincial Report Card. The Senior Years and Middle Years reports will not look substantially different as we have been making slight adjustments to our format over the past two years in preparation for the mandated changeover. The Early Years report, however, will look completely different than in past years. Thank you to all teachers for being so patient and supportive during this changeover.

A lot of work has been done in the background by our Divisional Technology Coordinator, our School Technicians, our Tech Mentors, and our Student Services office to make sure we are as ready as we can be for the change. Thank you to each and every one of you. Will there be issues? YES, there will be issues. Technology can present unique challenges. We choose to refer to them as opportunities. We will persevere. Included in this email are two pdf files from Manitoba Education that introduce the new Provincial Report Card, one for gr. 1-8 and another for gr. 9-12. Please review them at your convenience. Parent Teacher conference this year will be on: Tuesday, November 20th from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 21st from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. There will be a slight change in the process at the Senior Years end. We have returned to a gr. 9-12 Homeroom format. Each Homeroom has approximately 15 students from gr. 9-12. You will be contacted to set up a Parent Teacher Conference with your child’s/children’s Homeroom Teacher. The focus of this conference is:

- to look over the Report in a general sense;

- to share and discuss the Learner Profile;

- to visitthe Student Portal - go over course credits for

Graduation. These conferences will not involve academic discussions. Any concerns/questions relating to a specific course should be addressed with that particular teacher not to the Homeroom Teacher, unless of course, they are one and the same. Have a great week.

VISION/HEARING SCREENING Vision/Hearing screening will be held at Souris School during the week of October 29th-November 2nd. Students in Kindergarten and grade 1 will have hearing screening on Oct. 29th and 30th and vision screening will take place for all grades K, 1, 3, 5, and 7 students on Nov. 1st and 2nd. All screening will happen throughout the school day. Letters will be sent home the following week if further assessment is needed. It is very important that follow-up be made after a referral is sent home to rule out any significant problems with your child's hearing and vision. If you have any questions, please contact either resource teacher, Karen Butterfield (K-6) or Robyn Penner (Grade 6-12) at school. COME AND SUPPORT THE SOURIS SCHOOL BOOK FAIR Once again the Scholastic Book Fair will be held at Souris School. The winner will choose books from the Book Fair…$25.00 for the winner and $25.00 for the winner’s classroom. EARLY YEARS NEWS School Bus Safety Week – Buster the Safety Cat visited our Early Years classrooms this week to share his message of the importance of bus safety to our students. Buster shared the 10 rules of safe ridership with our students during his visit, leaving behind cool tatoos for everyone! Thanks to Lori Couling, our divisional Operations Coordinator, for organizing this presentation to our students! Fire Safety – A huge thank you to Brian Parham and the Souris Volunteer Fire Department for allowing our students to participate in a fire safety and awareness presentation at the Souris Fire Hall. Students had the opportunity to tour an outfitted trailer with a kitchen and bedroom setting. This unit was sponsored by Grand Valley Mutual Aid District who has connected with our local fire department to schedule visits to local schools. Students were informed of the hazards in a kitchen; what to do in the event of a fire; and engaged in discussions along the theme of “2 ways out.” Halloween Activities - On Wednesday, October 31st, our Early Years students will be participating in classroom Halloween parties. Beginning at 12:45 p.m. our students will all take part in a “Costume Parade” in the gym and then head to their classrooms for their Halloween party. We do ask that students do not arrive at school in the morning with their costumes on, as regular classes will be occurring. Students will be allowed to put their costumes on after lunch recess. Regular classes will not be held during the afternoon. Just a reminder that all costumes worn to school should not be related to violence in any way. Guns, swords, knives, axes and blood are not appropriate in a school setting. Your cooperation is very much appreciated.

HALLOWEEN FOR HUNGER This year our grade 4/5 and grade 5 classes, along with Mrs. Sobry’s Make Change Group, have decided to take part in, “Halloween for Hunger.” We will be collecting non-perishable food items and donating them to our local food bank. Previous years we have gone out and collected money for UNICEF, but this year we decided to keep the donations local. You can still save your extra change and donate it to the, “Pennies for Projector.” If you have a non-perishable food item you would like to donate please drop it off in one of the grade 5 classrooms.

•Mrs. Ryckman & Ms O’Brien MIDDLE YEARS NEWS Halloween Activities: Our middle years students will be participating in Halloween activities on October 31st, beginning at 2:00 p.m. Students will be participating in a Halloween Sockhop, with the option to attend a games room as well. Regular classes will be occurring prior to this event. A reminder that costumes must be appropriate for the school setting. Middle Years Leadership – Our Middle Years Leadership Committee has been selected for this school year. This process involved students nominating candidates from within their classroom, with the students themselves voting for the student to fulfill this role to represent their class. Our leadership members for this year are: Caitlin Bossert, Jordan Chudley, Jayda Shepherd, Ashton Jones, Kendra Roberts, and Madison Dodds. HEAD LICE CHECK This will be an ongoing reminder throughout the year. We remind parents to check heads on Friday evening. This way, if treatment is necessary it can be done on the weekend and children can return to school Monday. This is intended as a preventative reminder. Thanks for your help with this.

CAREER EXPLORATION NEWS Next Friday, November 2nd is the Post Secondary Day for all the Grade 11’s and 12’s. Universities and Colleges will be in attendance. Students will have a choice of attending two post secondary institution informative sessions and access display booths. Plans are underway for Brandon University and Assiniboine Community College Campus and class tours. For more information, please see me. As many of our Grade 12 students are now receiving their acceptance letters to post secondary institutions, the focus turns to scholarships and preparation. Information on program requirements, volunteering, spend a day programs, student loans, financial aid and deadlines are all necessary topics to consider. Stop in at the career center for more details.

SOURIS PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL SSPAC Update October 2012

SSPAC is looking for Room Representatives for some classrooms in Grades K-5. Room Reps act as a linkage between parents and teachers, and attend PAC meetings when possible. For example, the teacher may ask the Room Rep to call parents when volunteers or chaperones are needed. In addition, the PAC Secretary position is currently vacant. The position is responsible for taking and distributing meeting minutes and assisting with correspondence. Finally, SSPAC recently distributed a request for information. Anyone wishing to receive information by email or interested in volunteering, please return your form to the school or contact PAC.
