Rivers and Skies is an installation project exploring the relationships of two elements through the interconnection of art and science. It is a body of work consisting of several thematically related installations combining sculptural structures as optical instruments with simple technologies and cinema. Several large glass lenses, glass prisms as well as other optical instruments form and alter perceptive experience of the space. They create, metaphorically and physically, a ‘lens’ through which to explore the relationship between the visual perception and physical observation. The exhibition runs until December 1, 2011. Gallery Connexion is Fredericton’s only artist-run-centre. Located at 440 York Street, Gallery Connexion’s mandate is to make available contemporary art from other parts of the country and the world. For more information visit http://www.lenkanovak.com/

4.    CODE  opening  at  UNB  Art  Centre  Oct  21   The UNB Art Centre presents CODE, a multifaceted exhibition by artist Paula Keppie, opening with a public reception on Friday, October 21, at 5pm. A poet and multidisciplinary artist, Keppie carves, photographs, paints, draws, sews, quilts, embosses, dyes and prints, using a variety of materials including wood, paper, cloth and found objects. The exhibition ranges from small assemblages of found objects to large-scale installations, paintings, and a soundscape. In using and transforming objects and images from nature, she creates new codes, patterns and layered meaning to produce a multi-sensory environment - a gallery version of the variety of scale and sound found in nature. CODE runs until November 29 at the UNB Art Centre. The Centre is open Monday to Friday, from 9am to 4pm and is located at Memorial Hall, 9 Bailey Drive, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton. Admission is free. Everyone is welcome. 5.    Cinema  Politica  presents:  BAS!  Beyond  the  Red  Light  Oct  21   Please join us on Friday, October 21 at 7pm at Conserver House, 180 St. John St., Fredericton, for a screening of the documentary BAS! Beyond the Red Light, a feature-length documentary by director Wendy Champagne, about the victims of child trafficking, their perpetrators and rescuers. In the film, 13 young girls sold into Mumbai’s infamous network of gated brothels confront the inner and outer perils of life after rescue and reveal the very human story inside the big business of child trafficking. The film explores this lesser known issue of rehabilitation and reintegration of child victims from the point of view of these girls. We move between gated brothels and guarded dormitories to a rehearsal studio where the girls practice bhangra dance moves learned from lazy afternoons in front of the communal TV, and rehearsed in regular dance therapy classes, to tell their stories. This week’s film is co-hosted by the UNB/STU University Women's Centre. Cinema Politica screenings are always followed by discussion about the film. Screenings are free but donations are welcome to pay for Cinema Politica Membership. All are invited. For more information visit: www.cinemapolitica.org/fredericton or become a fan on Facebook! 6.    Mezzo  Soprano  Signa  Love  in  concert  Oct  21   Signa Love will be performing at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre in the auditorium, on Friday, October 21 at 7:30pm in an evening of musical theatre, light opera arias, Gershwin tunes and more! Nancy King Schofield is a senior artist whose work is inspired by childhood memories and social experience. Textures that mimic the resulting chaos left behind by rivers and oceans are expressed by adding various media such as sand, text, organic matter and rusted objects. Alex Schofield lives with a metaphorical foot planted in the gap between art and life. While she raises her children, she observes our expressions, perspectives and power dynamics. In studio, she combines tracings of the domestic and outside symbolism. The poignant, the humourous, the nostalgic are always at play. The exhibit will be on display from Friday, September 21 through November 15. The gallery is located at 98 Regent St., next to the Blue Door Restaurant, open Monday to Saturday 11-6 and by special appointment. wwwingridmuellerartandconcepts.com 8.    The  Wonderment  Project  presents  The  1st  Annual  ART  IN  THE  CARPARK  Fundraiser  Oct  22   Come paint to your heart’s content!

Lenka Novakova’s practice is concerned with an ephemeral poetic quality, a moment of recreation and reflective thought through constructed environments, simple technologies and moving light, with crossover in cinema and theatre technologies. Within this foundation, the artist explores qualities of space, architectural environments and installation by means of moving light. Light transforms and deconstructs space by marking, occupying, illuminating and dramatically staging it. Light also conditions the way we see our world and the way we feel. Novakova is interested in both light as a medium of perception as well as a medium of representation, with its impact on the visual and architectural transformation of space affecting our sensory and perceptual systems. Rivers and Skies initiated as a research on optics and perception in relationship to space and installation. Born in the Czech Republic, Lenka Novakova lives and works in Québec. Novakova holds an MFA from Concordia University. She has exhibited her work throughout the United States and Canada, and has participated in residencies, group exhibitions, and speaking engagements in Brazil, Korea, and Norway. 11.    FAN  (Fibre  Arts  Network)  meeting  Oct  23   The next FAN (Fibre Arts Network) meeting will be held on Sunday, October 23 at 1pm at 94 Grasse Circle (Karen LeBlanc's house). Both exhibitions run until November 29, 2011. Learning to Fly is a series of paintings inspired by time Sullivan spent with a family of barred owls. The series grew to explore themes of meditation, energy points and nature. It is an exploration of the calmness found in a walk through the woods—the beautiful, healing effect nature has on the mind. The central focus of the series is a reflection reconnecting the mind to the body. Monster Costume is a drawing series exploring identity, how concepts of social anxiety and the feeling of being ostracized are tied to appearance, and how the rules change in various contexts-- especially in the electronic social networking age. Estey “stole” pictures from the social networking website Facebook to use in this project. She acknowledges that the taking of the photographs she used for the series may not have been premeditated on the part of the subjects. The Annex Gallery is an initiative between Gallery Connexion and the Fredericton Playhouse to provide a juried exhibition space for Gallery Connexion members and for the Playhouse to include programmed exhibitions in its galleries. 17.    Remember  Africville  film  screening  at  the  Fredericton  Playhouse  Oct  24   The Fredericton Playhouse’s Create, Learn and Play series presents the documentary film screening Remember Africville on Monday, October 24, 2011 beginning at 7:30pm. Directed by Shelagh Mackenzie (1991), this National Film Board film depicts Africville, a small black settlement that lay within the city limits of Halifax, Nova Scotia. In the 1960's, the families were uprooted and their homes demolished in the name of urban renewal and integration. More than 20-years later, the site of the community of Africville is a stark, under-utilized park. Former residents, their descendants and some of the decision makers speak out, and with the help of archival photographs and films, tell the story of that painful relocation. The film screening will take place at the Fredericton Playhouse. Run time: 40 minutes No Charge. In Collaboration with the Playhouse Spotlight Series performance: Africville Stories on Thursday, November 3, 2011. For information, contact Amani at [email protected] / 459-6212. 18.    Monday  Night  Film  Series  presents  The  Trip  Oct  24   October 24, 8pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus THE TRIP Cast: Paul Watson, Bob Hunter, Patrick Moore Run Time: 110 minutes Country: Canada Year: 2011 Language: English A Special Presentation at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival®, The Trip is an acerbically witty trip through the English countryside. Reprising their hilariously fictionalized roles from 2005’s Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story, Steve Coogan (In The Loop, Our Idiot Brother) and Rob Brydon (24 Hour Party People) reunite with director Michael Winterbottom (A Mighty Heart, Tristram Shandy) for a hilarious road movie which follows the two comedians as they eat, riff, jab and dissect adulthood, fatherhood, relationships, their careers and Michael Caine. Coogan is asked by The Observer newspaper to travel through the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales, dining in fine restaurants and visiting various historic locations from the life of William Wordsworth. But when his girlfriend backs out on him, he has no one to accompany him on the trip. Enter Brydon, his best friend and source of eternal aggravation. After a half-hearted invitation where Coogan explains he’s asked everyone else and that Brydon is his last resort, the two of them set off in the car, armed only with a map and incredible comic timing. But the film is more than just jokes. With the same effortless slips between fiction and fact of Tristram Shandy, Winterbottom grounds his comedy in timeless observations about the importance of friendship and family. By the end of the journey, both men realize that loved ones are more important than any amount of fame.  19.    Overtime  Improv  Choir  every  Monday  at  Gallery  Connexion   The Overtime Improv Choir creates spontaneous soundscapes through conducted, instant composition, and free improvisation. After a brief summer hiatus, Overtime Improv Choir practices resume every Monday evening in the Gallery Connexion Showroom at 7:30pm. Practices are free and open to all. In Glorious Light, architect and art historian John Leroux directs our eyes to the way in which the multifaceted ideological and spiritual character of the city is portrayed through the illuminated richness of its stained glass. As well as the many decorated windows preserved in its historic homes, public buildings and churches, Fredericton boasts modern examples of the glazier’s craft, including significant installations by artists such as Molly Lamb Bobak and Claude Roussel. Considered as a whole, the diversity of themes they depict is astonishing, ranging from religious, historical and literary subjects through to a bestiary of animal figures, Pre-Raphaelite portraits, Victorian motifs and Post-War abstract fields of colour and pattern. With an insightful foreword by Allen Bentley, Glorious Light is an artful and informative study that demonstrates how exploring a municipality’s stained-glass heritage can promote a broader approach for appreciating our built environment. This will also be the first time in Canada that a fully illustrated history of a city's stained glass has ever been published. The book is designed and published by Gaspereau Press, one of the most highly regarded publishers in Canada who are renowned for their high quality work and award-winning graphic designs. We hope to see you there. 32.    Carol  Forbes  Learn  to  Draw  classes  and  workshop   Learn to Draw in pen, ink, watercolour and inktense pencils. No experience necessary.
