Lackland ISD Receives “Superior” Rating for Financial Integrity Lackland Independent School District received a top rating of ‘superior achievement’ for financial integrity from the Texas Education Agency for the 2009-2010 school year. According to the TEA website: The purpose of the financial accountability rating system (Texas Administrative Code (TAC), Title 19, § 109.1001) is to ensure that school districts and open-enrollment charter schools are held accountable for the quality of their financial management practices and achieve improved performance in the management of their financial resources. The system is designed to encourage Texas public schools to manage their financial resources better in order to provide the maximum allocation possible for direct instructional purposes. The system will also disclose the quality of local management and decision-making processes that impact the allocation of financial resources in Texas public schools. The state of Texas has 1029 school districts and Lackland ISD was one of the 784 to receive the agency’s highest rating. Special thanks to Mrs. Rebecca Estrada, Executive Director for Finance and her staff who do a phenomenal job managing the district’s finances. Lackland met 21 of the state’s 22 indicators that are measured on the FIRST instrument. A public meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at 11:30am in the LISD Board Room to discuss the results in detail. All are welcome to attend. Stacey Profile

STACEY PROFILE: STEPHANIE MICKEY By: Shanihai Green, Stacey Freshman

1.How long have you been here at Stacey?

My dad was in the Air Force, and we spent most of his career here in San Antonio. I attended Lackland schools from

second grade through graduation from high school. I came here to teach in 1995 when one of my math teachers

retired. I have 11 years of experience as a Lackland student and over 16 years as a Lackland teacher. This is home!

2.Have you noticed any recent changes to the school?

This is an interesting question. The biggest change I’ve been around for was the opening of this campus in 1997. I hear

people talk about things like our enrollment increasing or decreasing, and I think to myself, “We’ve seen this before.” I

was on a committee last year that focused on the future growth of the district. Then, this summer, I was cleaning out

my desk at home and found notes from that same kind of committee from 2001—ten years ago! – and the issues were

all the same. I think change is a matter of perspective. Things in life happen in cycles. If you stay here long enough, you

see it all happen again.

3.What is your job, like what is your specialty?

At the junior-senior high school, I teach math improvement classes. Over the years, I’ve taught almost everything from

seventh grade math to AP Calculus. The one constant that has always been a part of my schedule is helping kids who

are struggling with math. I am also the Response to Intervention Coordinator for our campus, which involves helping

students who are at-risk of failure, working on staff development for our campus, and gathering and managing

important data about student performance. I love my job!

4.What is your favorite day of the school year?

My favorite day of the school year is probably the first day of school. That may sound a little nerdy, but I’m always

excited to get back to my kids after the summer. My second favorite day is April 15, because we celebrate ALL student

birthdays on Virginia Stacey’s birthday.

5.What is your motivation to be a teacher?

I truly believe that a good education is the great equalizer in our democratic society. Because of that belief, I am

passionate about helping students succeed in school and life.

6.If you could teach at any school you wanted, would you stay here or would you got to another school?

Here, of course!

7.Do you sponsor any extracurricular activities?

I don’t currently sponsor any extracurricular activities, but I have sponsored student council and yearbook in the past.

8.What is your favorite grade to teach this year(7-12)?

I can’t choose. I love all of my kids.

9.What is the best and worst part of being a teacher?

The best part of being a teacher is being with the kids. The worst part is the frustration over our political system and

the damage that has been done lately to public school finance. We’ve got to find a way to convince the Texas

Legislature and Governor that our schools must be our FIRST priority.

10.If you could make any change to the school, what would it be?

I would build an auditorium that we could use for performing arts and special ceremonies, like graduation.

Having just completed the book “Bugs, Bugs, Bugs”, students in Mr. Garcia’s SFA class work in their teams in order to create large scale idea maps which included main ideas, supporting details and illustrations. Way

to work together and accomplish all of our goals in this cool book.

Mrs. Duron’s Senior Strategies Learning Lab is cooking! In addition to filling out college

applications, creating resumes, and writing essays, students are learning the basics in the

kitchen. Going to college means feeding yourself. On Fridays students are introduced to

quick, easy, and economical meals to make. Students made chicken parmesan fingers and

their vote was “delicious!”

Here is the recipe!

Ingredients:

Spaghetti

3-4 skinless, boneless chicken tenders

1/2 cup bread crumbs

1/2 cup parmesan cheese

1 teaspoon basil

2-3 tablespoon olive oil

YOU’RE DONE! Place spaghetti on your plate, top with sauce, add chicken, and sprinkle some mozzarella

cheese on top. ENJOY!

Directions:

SPAGHETTI: Prepare water for spaghetti and bring to boil.

CHICKEN: While waiting for the water to boil—cut chicken into

1/2” strips.

CHICKEN: Combine bread crumbs, basil, and cheese in a Ziploc

bag.

CHICKEN: Coat chicken in bread crumb mixture.

SAUCE: Heat spaghetti sauce in saucepan.

SPAGHETTI: If the water is boiling, add the spaghetti. Cook for 8-

10 minutes.

CHICKEN: Heat oil in skillet.

CHICKEN: Cook chicken pieces 5-6 minutes until golden brown

and no longer pink on the inside.

SPAGHETTI: Drain noodles.

Military Cooperative Team Visits Lackland ISD

The Military Cooperative staff which serves Lackland, Fort Sam Houston, and Randolph Field School

Districts visited Lackland ISD during the superintendent’s weekly Cabinet Meeting. These individuals who

are housed at Fort Sam Houston ISD serve special needs students at all three school districts. These

individuals have a variety of roles which include LSSP’s, physical therapists, occupational therapists, a

behavior consultant, speech pathologist, social worker, and transition coordinator. These amazing mobile

professionals have the awesome responsibility of addressing a wide variety of student needs including

autism, physical disabilities, learning disabilities, and behavior disorders. We appreciate the service that

these individuals provide and look forward to seeing them in the district this school year.

MEDIA CENTER NEWS

At the beginning of the 2004 – 05 school year, the new Lackland ISD Media

Center and the Lackland Elementary 3rd – 6th grade classroom wing opened. At

that time, the Lackland Elementary and Stacey Junior-Senior High School libraries

merged into one library in the new location.

Lackland ISD Media Center became the new name, as the library now housed all the

district’s library books. However, to accommodate the wide range of grade levels using

the facility, three separate collections were created.

The Media Center has the Juvenile section for use primarily by the Lackland

Elementary students, the Tween section for use mostly by the Stacey 7th and 8th grade

students, and the High School section for the district’s oldest students.

Each section has age-appropriate reading and interest level titles, which are easily

found on designated shelves and identified with special call number prefixes and spine

labels. For example, a 3rd grader wanting a nonfiction book about dinosaurs could look in

the science shelves in the west side of the Media Center, or use the online catalog to

identify a younger age dinosaur title by a call number prefix, starting with a “J” for

Juvenile. The students are taught to become independent users of the Lackland ISD

Media Center. This also prepares them to use other libraries, especially public libraries as

these libraries routinely have multiple collections within one location. Students at

Lackland definitely benefit from this exposure as they learn a life-long skill starting at a

very early age.
