OCEANS $100m $30.7 million for practical on ground action to restore and account for blue carbon ecosystems, such as seagrass and mangroves, that absorb carbon dioxide. $39.8 million to support new and expanded Australian Marine Park partnerships, supporting regional jobs & economic growth. $11.6 million to expand Indigenous Protected Areas to include Sea Country, creating jobs and protecting biodiversity. $18 million for practical actions to protect our threatened marine species and improve the sustainability of our fisheries. Oceans are part of Australians’ national identity and critical to the daily lives of millions of Australians. Our commitment to a sustainable ocean economy will protect iconic marine species, restore coastal habitats and support growth in the blue economy. The oceans and our climate are inextricably linked. This package directly supports Australia’s efforts to tackle climate change and will deliver real world outcomes, both domestically and internationally. It will deliver cleaner beaches, reduce fisheries bycatch, increase fish stocks, protect turtles and seabirds, and support coastal and Indigenous communities reliant on the ocean for their livelihoods. NEW MARINE PARKS IN INDIAN OCEAN TERRITORIES Consultation for the establishment of a new Marine Protected Area (MPA) is underway, which would encompass up to 740,000 km 2 of waters around Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. The Islands are globally recognised for their unique ecosystems. The new MPA would extend protection to the surrounding waters of the Indian Ocean, which are critical breeding grounds for the endangered southern bluefin tuna and a haven for other marine species. The MPA would be larger than the Great Barrier Reef (348,000 km 2 ) and second only to the Coral Sea (989,000 km 2 ). It would also boost the percentage of protected Australian waters from 37% to 45% – well above global targets of 30%. Establishing the MPA would support ocean health, scientific research and the blue economy, whilst providing greater protection from illegal international fishing operations. It will involve consultation with community groups, industry and stakeholders, including the Island communities and the commercial fishing industry. This will ensure that the views and aspirations of marine users are at the forefront of the process to design marine parks and manage them into the future. The goal is a balanced outcome that conserves natural habitat, encourages sustainable use of the waters, promotes eco-tourism and research and helps to stimulate the regional economy. $100 billion The amount that our ocean industries are projected to contribute to our economy each year by 2025, supporting almost 400,000 jobs. Our $100 million Oceans Leadership Package further builds on Australia’s role as a global leader in ocean and marine management.
