FAITH FORMATION
FEAST OF ST. IGNATIUS LOYOLA
Patron of the Society of Jesus, Soldiers, Education and Retreats
WEDNESDAY, JULY 31
St. Ignatius Loyola was born in 1491, one of 13 children of a family of minor nobility in northern Spain. As a young man Ignatius Loyola was inflamed by the ideals of courtly love and knighthood and dreamed of doing great deeds. But in 1521 Ignatius was gravely
wounded in a battle with the French. While recuperating, Ignatius Loyola experienced a conversion. Reading the lives of Jesus and the saints made Ignatius happy and aroused desires to do great things. Ignatius realized that these feelings were clues to God’s direction for him.
Over the years, Ignatius became expert in the art of spiritual direction. He collected his insights, prayers, and suggestions in his book the Spiritual Exercises, one of the most influential books on the spiritual life ever written. With a small group of friends, Ignatius Loyola founded the Society of Jesus, or the Jesuits. Ignatius conceived the Jesuits as “contemplatives in action.” This also describes the many Christians who have been touched by Ignatian spirituality.
Ignatius' passed away on July 31, 1556, at the age of 64. He was beatified by Pope Paul V on July 27, 1609 and canonized on March 12, 1622. The Society of Jesus found its niche in education. Before Ignatius died in 1556, his order established 35 schools and boasted 1,000 members. The order was responsible for much of the work of stopping the spread of the Protestant Reformation. The Society advocated the use of reason to persuade others and combat heresy. Today, the Society of Jesus is known for its work in educating the youth around the world. Several universities have been founded in the name of Ignatius and in the traditional Jesuit spirit. The Jesuits also perform many other important works around the globe.
On the day after his election on March 13, 2013, Pope Francis knelt in prayer before an icon of Mary and the child Jesus at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome, and then prayed at the Basilica’s chapel where Saint Ignatius of Loyola celebrated his first Mass in 1538. In praying there, the first Pope from the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits, honored his spiritual father, the founder of his religious order.
ST. ALPHONSUS LIGUORI
Patron of Confessors, Moral Theologians, and Lay Apostolate
THURSDAY, AUGUST 1
St. Alphonsus Liguori was born of nobility in 1696 near Naples, Italy. Alphonsus was extremely well-educated and received his law degree at age 16. He resigned from a brilliant career as a lawyer in 1723 when he lost a case because he overlooked a small, but important,
piece of evidence. He entered the seminary and was ordained three years later in 1726. He soon became a sought-after preacher and confessor in Naples. His so sermons were simple that they appealed to all people, both learned and unlearned. In 1732, he founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, or the Redemptorists, at Scala.
His greatest sorrow came toward the end of his life. The Redemptorists, precariously continuing after the suppression of the Jesuits in 1773, had difficulty in getting their Rule approved by the Kingdom of Naples. Alphonsus acceded to the condition that they possess no property in common, but with the connivance of a high Redemptorist official, a royal official changed the Rule. Alphonsus, old, crippled and with very bad sight, signed the document, unaware that he had been betrayed. The Redemptorists in the Papal States then put themselves under the pope, who withdrew those in Naples from the jurisdiction of Alphonsus. It was only after his death that the branches were united.
In 1762, Pope Clement XIII made him Bishop of Sant’ Agata del Goti near Naples; he resigned in 1775 due to ill health. He died in 1787 and was canonized in 1839. In 1871, Alphonsus was named a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius IX. He is widely known for his contribution to moral theology; his famous book, “Moral Theology”, was published in 1748. Today, the Redemptorists have a special charism within the Church to preach the Gospel to the abandoned poor.
In 1973, Joseph W. Tobin professed vows as a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, the Redemptorists; in 1978, he was ordained to the priesthood. On Jan. 23, 2017, Cardinal Tobin, currently the Archbishop of Newark, celebrated Mass at the Basilica of St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori, where remains of the founder of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, are venerated.

"When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread
and forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us,
and do not subject us to the final test." In today’s Gospel of Luke, Jesus instills confidence in his disciples that they will receive from
God that for which they pray. He teaches them - and us - to pray for daily needs: the food we need to live, the forgiveness we need to grow in our relationships, the protection we need to remain faithful. Because of what we have already received - our daily needs - we are certain that God will give even more to those who ask: The Holy Spirit - a share in the plenitude of God’s very Life! Such a Gift! Why would we not ask? When we turn to God in prayer we not always get answers in the way we expect but God always does respond to us, in one way or other, and answers our prayer!
Parents! Coming soon is our First Annual Vacation Bible Camp for all children entering Kindergarten through the 4th grade in Fall 2019. It will be held August 19-August 23, 9:15am - 12:15pm in the Parish Hall. Details on sign-up within this Bulletin. Parents, this will be well spent time for our children as they prepare for the next school year and the challenges they will encounter. Don’t miss it!
Religious Education Parents! I would like to remind everyone to sign-up for the upcoming school year Religious Education programs. Please do this before August 1st and you will save the $25. late fee! We need to have the registrations done ASAP so we can properly plan for our Catechists and School Programs and materials. Details for online registrations are within this Bulletin.
As the month of August will soon be upon us, let us remember this month is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the patroness of our Parish. Dates throughout this month that we can honor Mary in a very special way through our prayers, meditations, novenas, litanies, etc., along with the celebration of Mass include: August 13: Fourth Apparition of Our Lady of Fatima
August 15: The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary August 21: Feast of Our Lady of Knock – Queen of Ireland
August 22: Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary August 26: Feast of Our Lady of Czestochowa – Queen of Poland
Wherever our travels take us this summer let us not forget to thank God for the beauty and wonder in all His creation and pray for peace in our country and world today! God Bless You. Fr. Jacek
