STEWARDSHIP CORNER
GOSPEL MEDITATION -
ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE
If you brought your child to the restroom during the Liturgy of the
Word, you might walk away with one of two interpreta)ons of Jesus
as King. The first and second readings are bold and victorious. We
see Christ coming on the clouds for the final judgment of heaven
and earth. The Gospel sets a very different tone. Jesus is under
arrest and facing death before Pon)us Pilate. We know how this
story will end. So if Christ is King, what does it mean? Is he a glorious
conqueror or a suffering servant?
"My kingdom does not belong to this world." Here is the heart of
Jesus' reign. He is a king and his "subjects" are alive and well on
earth but, ul)mately, Jesus' kingdom transcends our earthly
concepts of power. Jesus faced down the tempta)on of a solely
earthly kingship. At the close of his 40 days in the desert, the devil
offered him the kingdoms of the world. Jesus only had to sacrifice
his heavenly values and worship Satan. The same tempta)ons to
distort the kingship of Christ are present to us today. Jesus'
invita)on also endures. "Everyone who belongs to the truth listens
to my voice." It is important for us to belong to the full truth of
Christ's kingdom.
First, our own hearts must be transformed. Our own rebellions in
favor of selfishness and against holiness must be conquered by
God's grace. Second, we must work to transform the world as best
we can in our own corner of it. Like Jesus shows us by his life and
death, this doesn't mean domina)on. It means service, sacrifice,
respect, and love. Our lives must "tes)fy to the truth" of Jesus
Christ, who lays down his life for his people. That is the true beauty
of Christ the King!

WHY DO WE DO THAT?
CATHOLIC TRADITION EXPLAINED
Queson: We live in a country that upholds the separa)on of
Church and state. What is the role of Catholics in society?
Answer: The role of the Church in the world has taken different
forms over )me, but the theme is the same. Be disciples in it! As
the lay faithful that is, not vowed priest or religious we are
called to live and love in the circumstances of our daily lives. St.
John Paul II wrote a document about the laity. In it he wrote,
"In their situa)on in the world God manifests His plan and
communicates to them their par)cular voca)on of seeking the
Kingdom of God by engaging in temporal affairs and by ordering
them according to the plan of God" (On the Lay Members of
Christ's Faithful, 15).
God wants us in the hospitals, the board rooms, the law offices,
the food pantries, and the liAle league games! We are to engage in
the affairs of the world. But when we're there, we should live the
plan of God. We need to respect those around us, engage in just
business and legal prac)ces, and love our children. We should
care for the earth, use our money wisely, and get to know our
neighbors. We must advocate for social policies that respect
human dignity and human freedom. No maAer our state in life, we
are invited to build the kingdom of God!

INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK

We live in interes)ng )mes. Life is
constantly changing. While this can be
exci)ng on one hand, change also presents
challenges. We live in an age of rela)vism
where people can pick and choose the
truths that suit them and build their own
system of beliefs. While humans certainly
have the freedom to choose, losing sight of
longstanding universal truths is not such a
healthy course. Jesus Christ our King is our
universal truth! He is the God who is
nonnego)able, our nonop)on! In Christ,
we know what truth is. He alone points us
to God, our true selves, our proper rela-
)onships with one another, and the world
in which we live. Christ directs us to the
poor and vulnerable and teaches us what
God's kingdom is meant to be. Christ is the
king who serves others. He gets dirty. He
ascends the throne of the cross. We are
called to do the same.
Sharing the
Gospel For the Kids
Everyone who belongs
to the truth knows
God's voice. When
you turn your head
and put your hands
over your ears, you
will not hear God's
voice. You will say unkind words. You will do
mean things. When you listen to God's voice,
you will choose to follow the commandments.
You will do for others what you would want
them to do for you. Then, God will welcome
you to his kingdom in heaven.
Prayer Lord, help me recognize your voice and
do your will.
Mission for the Week God takes sins away. I
will take the trash away for my family.

Christ the King
Today as we celebrate Christ the King,
may we open the door of our heart so
wide that we may listen to the voice of
Jesus calling us to help build his kingdom
here on earth.
This month, through your giLs, the
Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able
to bring God’s kingdom of love and
mercy to many families, providing
money for food, ulity, rent and other
bills. God Bless You!
WHAT IS YOUR CATHOLIC IQ?
The answer is : b
November is an appropriate month to hon-
or Black Catholics because it contains two
days important to African Catholic history.
November 3 is the feast of St. Mar)n de
Porres, (b 1579, d 1639). He is the patron
saint of mixedrace people and all those
seeking racial harmony. November 13 is
the birthday of St. Augus)ne of Hippo (b
354, d 430). He was a theologian and phi-
losopher. He is the patron saint of brewers
because of his conversion from loose living!
Both men came from North Africa.
