June 18, 2012 marked the Bicentennial of the United States’ declaration of war against England, and many months of preparations went into all of the commemorative events planned in Ohio for that date. The State of Ohio Bicentennial Commission provided Star Spangled Banner flags for all of the counties in the state, and volunteers – many Daughters included – helped coordinate the flag ceremonies and bell ringings across Ohio. This was a wonderful kickoff to the Bicentennial celebration! Photographs from some of the county and community events in which Ohio Daughters took part are included later in this newsletter. Much has happened since our 1812 State Council in March. At April’s Associate Council in Washington, D.C., I was privileged to receive award certificates presented for the efforts of our members, chapters, and State Society. On behalf of the Ohio Society, I was especially delighted to receive recognition for the largest membership growth in our division! What a tremendous accomplishment! Many thanks to our hard-working registrars and members - our State Registrar’s goal of 200 members by the end of this administration is definitely in sight! Work continues on our state project, updating the grave locations of War of 1812 veterans and patriots buried in Ohio. Last March, when project chairman Sunda Peters reported that we had approximately 4,600 individuals documented in our database, I thought that proof-reading the compiled information would be our major remaining effort. However, because of the dedicated work of some of our Daughters and their family members, we have since added over 1,200 new veterans to our records! If you have not yet seen our online index to veterans buried in Ohio, please take a moment to do so – I think you will be amazed at the undertaking involved. This index is located at http://www.ohiodaughters1812.org/graveindex. And if you have an 1812 ancestor or relative who was buried in Ohio, please look over the online information to make sure that it is correct. The data collection on this project started with grave location forms prepared by Ohio Daughters in the 1930s through 1987; in some cases, additional information has since come to light on these veterans and patriots. There are still many opportunities to become involved with this project. Our index shows that some of our Ohio counties boast only a few veterans … undoubtedly there are more veterans who have not yet been documented. Information in each county’s WPA veteran grave registrations or in the WPA cemetery maps, generally available in County Recorder offices, may yield additional clues to these veterans. Genealogical Society compilations and cemetery books also may hold additional information. If you live in or near one of these potentially “under-documented” counties, would you please consider assisting in this graves index project by doing a little research? Or perhaps you live near one of your county’s older cemeteries? You may have noticed that tombstone photos for veterans in several Ohio counties are now included in our online index. While the updated book will contain only printed information on each veteran – no photos – the online index is greatly enhanced by the cemetery and tombstone photos that have been included. Non-members have also contributed to our site, and a student working on his Eagle Scout project is coordinating efforts in one of our counties as well. If you like to use a camera, would you please consider taking some digital photos of veteran tombstones in a nearby cemetery or county? We should be proud of what we have accomplished so far this bicentennial year. I am looking forward to our Society’s activities and the commemorative events in the coming year! Ohio Soldiers Burials Database Project – Sunda Peters This list of veterans buried in Ohio was last updated in 1987. The Ohio Soldiers Burials Database currently contains 4685 soldiers. Many thanks to Martha Herrnstein, Sheryl Courtney, and Gay Anderson for entering the data. Sunda also found lists of soldiers’ burials when processing the Ohio Records and Pioneer Families (OGS). Craig Brown, Columbiana Co. Recorder, has a box of veteran burial information we need to pick up.

A copy of the database has been given to Susan Leininger and her husband, Eric. They will be processing the data to use for an online database of veteran burials. The State of Ohio War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission will link to our database. A limited number of books will be printed.

The chapter donated money to Pets for Vets. Sharon has given a War of 1812 power point presentation to two organizations in Summit County and has been asked to do four more. The State of Ohio Bicentennial Commission’s War of 1812 Bicentennial Ceremony on June 18, 2012, at the Ohio Statehouse, was held inside due to inclement weather. The Commission members attending this event are pictured along with Ohio’s 2003 state bicentennial bell, which was rung at noon. Over forty Ohio counties held simultaneous flag ceremonies and “Rang the Bells for 1812” in commemoration of the declaration of war. Ohio Daughters assisted in these efforts by coordinating many of the county ceremonies and community events held on June 18th. Some photos from these events are on the following pages.

A goal of Peter Navarre Chapter is to increase community awareness of the chapter and of the War of 1812. To achieve these objectives, chapter members assembled a War of 1812 display at the Bay Village Library. Artifacts, reproductions, and current documents available for public viewing include: The Star Spangled Banner, an 1812-era flag style such as this inspired Francis Scott Key to write what would eventually become our National Anthem. An authentic salvaged piece of Commodore Perry’s USS NIAGARA. Its restoration was completed in 1988, and the ship is in port at the Erie Maritime Museum, Erie, PA. A chapter-designed coloring book commemorating the War of 1812 Bicentennial. Historical facts and pictures of events in the Northwest Territory during the War of 1812. A proclamation signed by Bay Village Mayor Debbie Sutherland, establishing 10 September 2013 as Remembrance Day of the War of 1812.

Chapter President Marlene Wilkinson admires display coordinated by Chapter Secretary Deb Marisch.

SEPTEMBER 2012 STAR and ANCHOR PAGE 9

Commander William Wetmore Chapter

The William Wetmore Chapter has had a busy spring and summer with all sorts of celebrations for the Bicentennial of the War of 1812. Our biggest achievement was taking delivery of the specially made, by the Summit County Veterans Services Commission, War of 1812 Flag Holders on May 18. This was not an easy task getting the VA to do this! Once they arrived, we spent two entire days delivering the flag holders to cemeteries all over Summit Co., so that they could be installed in time for the VFW and Boy Scout troops to put flags in them for Memorial Day. We also installed about 60 flag holders in cemeteries that didn’t have the man-power to do so themselves. It was a great time to see flags flying on the graves of these forgotten veterans for the first time in 150 years!!

We also rode in the Cuyahoga Falls Memorial Day parade for the first time and manned a table with 1812 information at the cemetery where the Memorial Service took place.

We presented an award to an outstanding Jr. ROTC Cadet from Garfield High School in May.

Requests were sent to each Mayor in Summit County to sign a proclamation declaring June 18 Remembrance Day in their Community. We received ten out of 17.

In June we took our annual chapter road trip to Erie and Presque Isle, PA to see where Commodore Perry built his fleet. The Maritime Museum there was fabulous. Our chapter presented the Star Spangled Banner in four counties at Noon on June 18. One member who lives in Indiana obtained a VA grave stone for an 1812 Veteran in Indiana and had a grave marking ceremony. Our chapter has researched and obtained countless grave stones for Summit Co. Veterans.

We conducted a Memorial Service in June for the 45 veterans of the War of 1812 buried in Hudson and in July for the 21 veterans buried in Cuyahoga Falls. We are planning a big Memorial Ceremony for the 250 veterans buried in Portage Co. in September in conjunction with the Portage Co. Historical Society. At that time we will present the Spirit of 1812 Award to one of our members who has researched the veterans of 1812 buried in Portage Co.

We finalized our book on the Veterans of the War of 1812 buried in Summit Co., and gave it to eight historical societies, the Summit County Public Library, the Stow-Munroe Falls Library, the Hudson Library, and the National 1812 Library. We will sell copies as a fund raiser.

President Sharon Myers has presented her program on the War of 1812 to eight groups, including various Historical Societies, Cuyahoga Falls DAR, and Rotary, with several more bookings to go. Sharon also did a presentation for three Richardson Elementary third-grade classes, telling them about William Wetmore who founded Cuyahoga Falls in 1812. And she has written a 900-word column on the War of 1812 in Summit County that appears monthly in five local papers. All these columns are on the Wetmore Chapter Website at http://sharonmyers1.tripod.com.

We have had exhibits in three libraries in the county and have more to go. Our youngest Junior member, Johnathan Mazzarella, was born July 3!

We built a float and participated in the Cuyahoga Falls Bicentennial Parade in August, and are looking forward to a Junior Outing to the Akron Zoo in September. All of this has blossomed into incredible publicity for our chapter and for the Society. Articles have been picked up from the AP and we have received phone calls from all over the state and also from out of state. Membership is rising – all is good!! As a newspaper reporter quoted me, “The Bicentennial only happens once!”

We have 30 members, including three FADDs and eight juniors. We have two applications into National and several prospectives working on their documentation.

basic information on each veteran, tombstone photographs have been included as available. This web site was developed by the Ohio Society U.S.D. 1812, and is still a work-in-progress, as information is updated at least once a week. If you know of any War of 1812 veterans buried in Ohio who are not listed, please let us know! All submissions and updates are most welcome!!
