Summer 2015

On behalf of the Ocean County Board of ChosenFreeholders, I welcome you to the Summer 2015issue of Out & About Ocean County, A FreeNewsguide to Arts & Heritage Events. Each summer,

we have the opportunity to enjoy art and heritage events as well as the treasuresof our beaches and natural resources. On April 3, 2015, the Ocean County Cultural & Heritage Commission hosted thefourth annual Salute to Ocean County at the Grunin Center for the Arts at OceanCounty College. I am sad to share the loss of yet another icon of the Ocean County cultural community. George Czurlanis was an American Hero: a totally disabled WWIIcombat veteran and the man most responsible for saving the two sites associatedwith the 1778 Affair at Little Egg Harbor, the largest military engagement to haveoccurred in what is now Ocean County. Ocean County’s arts and history organizations provide a rich tapestry of programs, events, and classes for your summer enjoyment. Many of our towns and boroughsprovide wonderful outdoor concerts including the Ocean County Department ofParks and Recreation’s The Carousel of Music Concert Series to be held atvarious locations throughout the summer. The pages of this 2015 summer issue are graced with art work received inresponse to a request from the LBI Art Council. Please join us for the Ocean County Parks and Recreation Department’s 75thanniversary celebration on June 27 from 4 PM to 8 PM at Ocean County Park inLakewood on Route 88. Please take the time to visit our recently completedCloverdale County Park in Barnegat. You will find a truly peaceful place toexperience the Pinelands through an actual 19th century cranberry farm. Please take special note of our exciting palette of summer cultural opportunitiesin the event listings.

Sincerely,

Freeholder John C. Bartlett, Jr.

he Long Beach Island Art Council as itexists today is made up of creative moversand shakers who want to make LBI a betterhome for the arts. Officially formed in September 2014 andchaired by Matt Burton of the m. t. burtongallery in Surf City, the council operatesunder the nonprofit auspices of the LongBeach Island Foundation of the Arts andSciences and in conjunction with LongBeach Township and the Borough of SurfCity. Its mission is to advocate for artists byproviding a platform and support, withopportunities for community outreach, camaraderie, professional developmentand networking; to build a database ofartists and art-friendly venues; to create

and sustain art and culture on Long Beach Island and throughout Ocean County;and to collaborate with independent artists, businesses and local leaders to meetthe needs of the art community. The council’s signature event is the LBI Artist Open Studio Tour, a tradition nowin its 10th year (June 27 and 28, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit lbiartists.com.). The eventinvites the public to take a self-guided tour of more than 20 studio/ gallery locationsand an inside peek at the artists who work and exhibit on the Island. “This is ourlivelihood,” Burton said. The seed was initially planted in 2011, when Long Beach Township Environmen-tal Coordinator Angela Andersen attended a Sustainable Jersey workshop at theLeague of Municipalities conference and learned about a Creative Placemakinggrant through the National Endowment for the Arts that could help turn LongBeach Island into a “cultural arts district.” The grant called for a partnershipbetween a municipality and a nonprofit entity. She brought the idea back home andpitched it to LBIF’s executive director at the time, Chris Seiz. Creative placemaking is a concept that goes beyond public art installations andperforming arts centers. “It is about making places better for everyone,” accordingto the National Consortium for Creative Placemaking. It means creating an environment in which arts can grow and thrive, Burtonexplained. It means having the right amenities and social scene to support a creative culture. It means building visible art into the town’s landscape – e.g.,murals, sculptures, art fairs, performances, movies, artful signage. It means moreto do, in terms of both work and play. Opportunity. Public transportation. The consortium offers consultation and coaching, practical research and thoughtleadership to help communities build capacity for sustainable and cost-effectivecreative placemaking. When communities foster the arts, those communitiesbecome more livable and prosperous through the arts, the consortium contends.

With the $25,000 grant awarded in Aug. 2012, the Foundation hired NCCP’sExecutive Director Leonardo Vazquez to coach the planning process. Burton, amember of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, got on board as a fellow visionary. That fall, after Superstorm Sandy struck, the work continued. At that point manyof the planning sessions turned into group therapy sessions, Burton and Andersenrecalled. The blessing in disguise was the storm’s unifying effect – which, incidentally, aligns with the creative placemaking vision. The storm and itsaftermath “broke down barriers,” Burton said. “Between Sandy and this project, my circle of friends quadrupled,” he added.A team began to develop a community-building strategy for the Island as a whole, with art as a vehicle, Andersen explained. The challenge was to define the Island’scultural identity. In order to do that, “we all have to speak the same language,”Andersen said.Other support for the placemaking project has come in the form of in-kind matchesof time and space at the township and $10,000 from the Geraldine R. DodgeFoundation. “Everything was very organic and serendipitous,” Burton said.Burton and LBIF gallery director Kristin Myers had teamed up back in 2010 witha series of artist potluck dinners held at the Foundation – a movie night here, acritique night there. That continued for about a year.“It was during this time when I realized there is a local art community that wantsmore. Here was a group of people who wanted to meet and commiserate. Weshared ideas and critiqued our work.” When he formed the art council in 2014,Burton said he wanted to go back to that meeting format because it was fun andseemed popular with artists. “Those early meetings were the node of my involvement,or desire to get involved, with the NEA grant,” he explained. One outcome of the planning process was the formation of Long BeachTownship’s free shuttle service – a fleet of nine buses running all summer long toconnect Islanders to venues. In 2013 the team laid out a “draft vision and values statement,” a manifesto ofsorts that illustrated an LBI 10 years in the future: A year-round destination for artsand culture, with an active and influential arts council serving as a hub of informationand networking; a place where towns, businesses, nonprofit organizations andnews outlets collaborate to promote and celebrate arts and culture, as per the council’srecommendations. The vision includes additional museums, at least one movietheater, “First Friday”-type events, musical and culinary events, and a plein air artcompetition. For the vision to be effective, local leaders must recognize the value in all formsof art and involve residents and business owners in decision-making, according tothe statement. Implementation of the vision can begin with municipal government, Andersenexplained – convincing each of the Island’s six towns to see the value in, andbenefits to be gained from, the creative placemaking concept. Ideally each townwould pass a resolution that embraces arts and culture as a vehicle for economicdevelopment and local tourism. “That’s how you get it in the door,” she said. “Thebackbone of the change will come from municipal master plans.” So far, LongBeach Township and Surf City have adopted such resolutions. Once they see the potential for grant money, Burton said, towns are more likely tosupport the cause. “We have a foothold.”

he plan is working. No fewer than 20 SewardJohnson statues – thosequ i rky t rompe l ’oe i lsculptures of everydayfolks, frozen in the act ofeveryday living – arrivedin downtown Toms Riverin May and will be ondisplay through mid-September for passersbyto notice and enjoy, inter-act with, photograph, and share on social media.Just a few days after the installation was unveiled to the public on Friday, May 8,the statues were already catching attention, causing a stir, and bringing everybodydowntown – just as organizers had hoped.“The whole goal is to get people to come to Toms River, to make it their finaldestination,” according to Bill Golkiewicz, Executive Director of the DowntownToms River Business Improvement District (BID). As a kid, he said, he can recallwhen the movie theater brought families into town, and Toms River was abustling, pedestrian-friendly center for recreation, commerce and leisure.Presently a community-wide effort is underway to herald a return to those prosperous times, involving partnerships among local government, civic, creative, educational and business leaders. The Downtown Toms River Community ArtProject is leading the charge, branding the Seward Johnson Sculpture Exhibitionas a Toms River Signature Event.A brochure and map with the statues’ locations throughout town can be picked upat the BID office at 218 Main St. The statues add whimsy to the sidewalks and lawns of the downtown area.Uncannily lifelike, two boys in front of the library prepare to launch a kite “Outof Sight,” while nearby “Monet, Our Visiting Artist” is deeply involved in hisplein air painting (the scene on his canvas is actually a representation of what he’s“seeing”). Over near the corner of E. Water and Horner Streets, a man crouchesnext to his dog to tell him, “Yuck, Go Fetch,” while at Huddy Park, a womancaught in a sudden gale in “Stormy Weather” struggles mightily with her umbrellaand skirt. The Seward Johnson exhibit is on loan from The Seward Johnson Atelier, Inc.,based in Hamilton, NJ. The statues have traveled around the world to be hosted incities in the United States, Italy, Monaco and Germany. exhibit. In total theproject costs more than$70,000, factoring inthe loan fee, interna-tional shipping costs, paint and repairs, printedmaterials, and many“tie-in” programs setthroughout the summer, including photo contestsand video projects. Kern, a member of theGrounds for Sculpturein Hamilton, has long

admired Johnson’s sculptures and greatly enjoyed last year’s “The Retrospective”exhibition, which has been extended to July 2015. “That was the impetus,” Kernsaid. He personally loves the way Johnson’s work is imbued with subtle humor inthe series “Celebrating the Familiar.”Additional support came from theTownship of Toms River, OceanCounty Vocational-Technical Schoolsfor web and graphic design, the OceanCounty Library for tie-in program-ming, and the Ocean County MasterGardeners, who will contribute somelandscaping elements to some of thefigures. Members of TRAC (TomsRiver Artist Community) helped toselect the statues they wanted to bring. The Historical Society will offer walk-ing tours of the downtown, beginningat the Farmers Market, on the firstWednesday of each month in June,July and August. Almost all of thetours were booked at press time,Golkiewicz said.“It took a village,” Kern said.

Community Mural ProjectConcurrently, mural art is bringing bright, bold visual flair to landmarks aroundtown with the Engage Toms River Community Mural Project. Check out theDowntown Toms River Community Mural Project’s Facebook page.Part of the thought process is to revitalize and infuse the downtown with an artvibe, according to Jeremy Grunin, Executive Director of the Jay and Linda GruninFoundation. As a funding vehicle for projects that advance the arts, education andhealthcare, the Foundation either originates an idea or expands upon someoneelse’s existing idea, Grunin explained.“Engage Toms River” (#engagetomsriver) is a Grunin Foundation initiative thatstarted last year with a YouTube contest for high school kids to create a 3- to 10-

minute lip dub music video about Toms River, for a chance to win prizes valuedat $500, $1000 or $10,000. Its most recent program was a mural design contestthis spring to transform the building that houses Nancy’s Mid-Town Café on MainStreet this summer. The purpose is to increase public awareness and appreciation of art that takesmany different forms – of art’s universality in the ways it can evoke feeling andinspire action.“We want to make art accessible to everyone,” Grunin said. In the long term, artequals economic improvement. Art attracts tourists – specifically creative people– who will stay longer, stay later, and find other ways to make the most of theirvisit. Shop. Eat. Tweet about it. Hashtag. “It’s a catalyst,” he said.Wanting to banish misperceptions about Toms River as a “boring” or “dangerous”place, Grunin explained, the “Engage” project’s aim is to prompt and sustainpublic engagement and participation in the arts – to become “the hub of ourcommunity’s creative ingenuity.”The “Engage” project calls upon every citizen to awaken his or her creativity, individuality, artistic and technical abilities, and to interact with the arts andculture in the community. The plan is for the Grunin Foundation to host two orthree “Engage” programs every year – digital arts, performing arts, music, architecture, sculpture, painting and more – open to everyone in Toms River, witha minimum prize of $10,000. The Foundation isn’t looking for the credit for the ideas or the results, he said –“We’re looking for a culture change.” Sustainability is key, so that others will takethe idea and run with it.Downtown Toms River, in collaboration with TRAC and the community at large, commissioned its first community mural last year for the side of Simply Skinsalon on Water Street. It pays homage to the town’s history, with the Toms Riverwinding through the different eras, from the earliest settlers traveling by canoe tothe River Lady riverboat, a beloved landmark today. The mural was painted by400+ citizens of all ages. The second mural will go up on the side of Nancy’s this summer. The wall is 100feet long and 27 feet tall. The design contest called for submissions and received42 entries, judged by a panel of esteemed judges co-led by photographer DannyClinch, sculptor Brian Hanlon and glass artist Yvonne Yaar. Three finalists wereselected, and the winner was Elizabeth Paseler’s stunning vista dominated byshades of yellow, orange and red.Yaar has volunteered for the Downtown Toms River Business ImprovementDistrict for 10 years, and she started TRAC with the express mission to bring artto downtown Toms River and to help with its revitalization, she said. “So, I’m allabout making art happen and helping the economy at the same time.”Once the winning entry was chosen, Paseler and Yaar together turned the designinto a paint-by-numbers system. The mural became available on May 16 for thepublic to sign up for painting sessions at Ocean County Library (in the first-floorChildren’s Discovery Reading Room), on 5-foot square panels, to be hung likeoutdoor industrial wallpaper.Panels are “a much more practical way to work on it,” Yaar explained. “No sweating

It’s kind of like making a huge puzzle” – with 118 pieces! – which Yaarcalled “no small feat.”Yaar outlined the process: Use a projector to magnify and graph the originaldesign onto each panel, being sure they all line up properly. The panels are alsocolor-coded. “So when one panel is sitting on a table at the library, waiting forsomeone to paint it (even though you can’t always tell what it is, exactly, since it’sa 5-by-5-foot panel with a super magnified design), you don’t have to know, because all the spaces are color-coded. “So, essentially, you end up with a paint-by-number, just like the kits you get atthe craft store but a whole lot bigger. We will have a large photograph of the mural, lined up into squares that coordinate with the numbered panels. That way, whilesomeone is painting, we can show them which panel corresponds in thephotograph.”The main idea behind both contests was to get the public to vote and participate,Grunin said, which strengthens people’s connection to their community.“I love being an artist, and I love bringing art to other people,” Yaar said. “Ibelieve art has the power to heal and the power to bring people together. I believeit can make you happy!”

Commissioner Linda Starzman presented the oil-on-canvas reproduction of “PoloCrowd,” painted by George Bellows in 1910. The work was done by a companycalled Canvas Replicas and paid for by contributions from C&H commissionersand staff. Bellows spent the month of April 1910 in Lakewood, observing and painting theemerging sport of polo, played at the estate of financial tycoon George Jay Gould, now Georgian Court University, Starzman said. “Polo Crowd” has the distinctionof selling at auction for $27.5 million, the highest price ever paid for an Americanpainting.Mark Wilson, the college’s artistic director, touted the new performing arts degreep r o g r am . middle of the night: ‘Help me! Help me! And Jay and Linda Grunin heed the call.”The Jay and Linda Grunin Foundation is a proactive grant making nonprofitorganization dedicated to bringing world-class performing and visual arts, healthcare and education to Toms River through focused community-based planning andproblem-solving. The Foundation has been inspired by the poet RobertBrowning’s observation, “Ah, but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp – orwhat’s a heaven for?” The Jay and Linda Grunin Foundation has committed over$10,000,000 to the community since 2013 under the direction of ExecutiveDirector Jeremy Grunin.Sculptor Brian Hanlon, the recipient of the Ocean County Lifetime AchievementAward in the Arts, in his humble remarks of thanks, said: “I’ve always beenblessed with people around me who could see more in me than I could see inmyself.”

Out & About caught upwith Hanlon af ter theSalute, while the father offive was in an airport onhis way to Louisiana StateUniversity to create acommissioned sculptureof Bob Pettit, the NBA’sfirst-ever MVP. Frequenttravel comes with the ter-ritory when business isbooming. In total he hascreated more than 400public and private works

of art. In 2013 he completed 11 sculptures; in 2014 he did 31; this year he has 17on the schedule. He relies on a “great team,” he said, ranging from 6 to 20 helpers, depending on the size of the project, who make a project run smoothly. “We’re all trying to make a difference,” he said. For him, art is a vehicle forcatharsis. His “Angel in Anguish” 9/11 memorial statue in Brick, for example, isabout healing. Other past works include Earl Lloyd, the first African-AmericanNBA player and Shaquille O’Neal at Louisiana State University. “I feel goodabout the gift I’ve been given,” he said. “When you can do something and beeffective, it’s all good.” His work of choice these days is sports stories. “Athletichistory is American history,” he said. “I’ve never been interested in being famous,” he said. He’s mainly interested inportraying the stories behind the sculptures, with which he aims to inspire andeducate. Nick Paleologos, Executive Director of the New Jersey Council on the Arts, toldthe “Salute” audience that, of the $7 million the state has awarded to OceanCounty, $2 million of it has gone to the Ocean County Cultural and HeritageCommission to redistribute to the county’s arts and heritage organizations. Heconcluded his remarks: “The New Jersey Council on the Arts stands “ready andwilling to march in line under the Grunin banner.”Tara Amelchenko accepted the Commissioner Service Award on behalf of hermom, Alison, in appreciation of her 30 years on the Cultural and HeritageCommission. Tara is also an artist, with a studio in Red Bank.

He isalso the founding president of the Brick Township Historical Society; the Directorof the Havens Homestead Museum; and a member of the town’s HistoricPreservation Commission. Among his proudest achievements as a champion of history, he counts the formationof the Historical Society, in 1976, and the official change of mailing address fromBricktown to Brick, in 1978. It was an effort along with Joanne Zezula that tookseven or eight months with the Post Office and gained the group some notoriety. “It was important, because the town needed an identity,” he said. Winning the Lifetime Achievement award from the county was “a great honor,”he said, and an especially meaningful one, because he worked with the award’snamesake Polly Miller for three years as a researcher while she was writing herOcean County: Four Centuries in the Making.“Awards have a great deal of meaning, but that connection makes it extra special,”he said.
