Zero Net EnergyDefined…A ZNE building produces as much energy as it consumes through clean, renewable resources over the course of a year. Also know as Net Zero Energy.

Disruptive Innovation

A disruptive innovation is an innovation that helps create a new market and value network, and eventually goes on to disrupt an existing market and value network (over a few years or decades), displacing an earlier technology.

Governor Brown’s Zero NetEnergy Goals

• All new residential construction will be ZNE by 2020 in California.

• All new commercial construction will be ZNE by 2030.

• 50% of existing commercial buildings in California will be retrofitted to ZNE by 2030.

California has a set a bold course to achieve statewide Zero Net Energy (ZNE) in the next two decades:

• ZNE buildings do not have to cost more

• Shift the cost discussion to value• Stretch codes are the opportunity

to ratchet up the built environment and compliance and O & M is critical

• Prototypes are critical• Individuals influence

Closing Session Feedback

Page 22: NZC - Di Nola

NBI © 2013

• The cache of ZNE is real, it is a tipping point• The value of aspirational goal, such as the

2030 which inspired CA. • The Grid is our friend, let’s not alienate the

partner in the utility that we need to bring along on this pathway.

• EcoDistricts are very inspiring and scale jumping.

• Government needs to engage and demonstrate but also get out of the way and let innovation thrive.

Closing Session Feedback

Page 23: NZC - Di Nola

NBI © 2013

• Setting the aspirational goal has led to a large range of policy efforts and ideas

• Strategy we need next is the next level of how to monitor these buildings

• The State and local government is where it is going to happen

• So exciting to get together with so many experts, next we can build collaboratives.

• Gary Christianson: small scale developer, was beginning to scale back efforts, now feels ZNE effort can continue and so very achievable.

Is there a relationship between cost and performance?

Page 32: NZC - Di Nola

NBI © 2013

63% of buildings are < 25,000 square feet (sf)

and 18% are > 100,000 sf

Page 33: NZC - Di Nola

NBI © 2013

Challenges

• Data Gathering • PV delayed due to cost• Projects not occupied or

operated as modeled• Getting the metering right• Commissioning – new

form of ZNE Cx• Fear of disclosure - ZNE

seen as an end-all

Page 34: NZC - Di Nola

NBI © 2013

Insights

• ZNE offers a clear and aspirational target • It is hard - a process not a static outcome• High performance first – lower energy use lowers PV

cost• Growth and opportunities in repeatable buildings

(schools, banks, small offices)• District, community, campus level offer cost and scaling

efficiencies • Actual ZNE happens downstream of design -

operational focus, tenant behavior focus

Page 35: NZC - Di Nola

NBI © 2013

Trends• Bigger buildings, more types, more firms, diverse

climates, lower EUIs, • Buildings use readily available technologies and

integrated design• Net Positive • Designers and owners want measurement and

feedback • Design teams going beyond the project to policy• Low-rise Multifamily growing• Ultra-low energy accomplishments are accelerating

Page 36: NZC - Di Nola

Frequent ZNE Strategies

• Ground Source Heat Pumps• Ventilation: Natural, Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems (DOAS),

Demand Control Ventilation (DCV)• Highly Efficient Thermal Envelope• Building Orientation & Glazing ratio• Solar Controls - shading• Daylighting Controls• Energy Management System• Building Dashboards• Radiant Heating / Cooling• Plug load Reductions
