In the small rural town of Wellman, Iowa, members of the community were shocked to find out that children living in their town were only getting something to eat while at school. A community filled with “farmers who are proud to be feeding the world, how are there kids in our own backyard that don’t have food,” Julie Gordinier of Wellman Produce Co. said.

Witnessing the immediate need, Gordinier and a small group went to the Mid-Prairie council of churches and asked for assistance.

Suddenly a church was lending its church hall to store the food and pack the bags, a board of directors formed and 32 churches offered to take turns packing the bags each week. The group also helped supply granola bars in the nurse’s office at the five schools to provide an option for students who needed something to eat.

Coupled with the need, an annual fundraiser was established to help start a backpack program in the elementary schools in the district.

In its fourth year, more than 300 people attended the Feed the Kids Mid-Prairie annual dinner and auction last fall, helping raise awareness about food insecurity and raise funds to support the expanding program. Each week, 65 backpacks are packed and distributed to children within the Mid-Prairie elementary schools.

The community continues to rally behind the cause, especially during the summer months when school isn’t in session. Area churches provide lunch on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, while the Feed the Kids Mid-Prairie program provides lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the local Senior Center, allowing time for the kids to eat and bond with elderly

community members. “The kids as well as the seniors enjoy spending time together,” Gordinier said.

But the outreach doesn’t stop there. Weekend food bags are now also being distributed at two local libraries and the skating rink, helping to further reach children who need assistance or those who needed more than what the weekend bag provided. The middle school and an elementary school have reached out for support to help establish a school food pantry, providing food to those in need prior to leaving school each afternoon.

“The community and especially the teachers in our area really appreciate the programs and that they have somewhere to turn when they find someone in need,” Gordinier said.

By: Christopher KnightLiving in Los Angles and working in Hollywood, I am constantly around abundance, a larger than life world that exudes the American dream. I consider myself very blessed to have had success at a young age as a child TV star and I have continued to be blessed in many forms throughout my life.

Living in a country and in city that produces so much wealth and prosperity, I think it is oftentimes easy to offhandedly consider that most if not all of those living around us are doing similarly. Sure, some people have bigger homes or more expensive cars, but when it comes to food, it seems certain that everyone has access to more than enough to eat. But that appearance is misleading.

There are pockets of populations all over the United States where poverty is so severe that people are going without most everything, including food to eat. Hunger in the U.S. may seem abstract, but unfortunately it is not.

While our country’s cites offer innumerable examples of American prosperity, a drive through our farmlands bears witness to a foundation of that prosperity – America’s food production.

Someone like me is amazed at the vast amount of food our American farmers and ranchers produce. U.S. farmers and ranchers are the most highly productive and efficient food producers in the world.

When passing through the Midwest, one can see literal mountains of grain, cattle nearly as far as the eye can see and wheat fields over the horizon and beyond - farther than the eye can see!

You’ll see countless livestock production facilities producing an unfathomable abundance of meat, milk and eggs. How could there be anyone in this country that goes hungry?

I wasn’t completely blind to hunger issues here in the U.S. I knew that, even in the richest nation in the world, there are hungry people. But it wasn’t until I was involved with the making of the movie “Ivy League Farmer,” and had the chance to meet the folks from Nutra Blend, that I learned the magnitude of the hunger issue right here at home.

The defining characteristic of food insecurity is, at times throughout the year, household member’s food intake is reduced and their normal eating patterns are disrupted, because the household

lacks the money and other resources for food.

For periods of time, the children of these food insecure households can only depend on a guaranteed meal while at school. Outside of school, where and when they will eat, is not always known. Many people think that food insecurity is only an urban issue; but food insecurity can be found everywhere, and in every county in the country. In fact, rural childhood hunger is often more severe. Rural areas account for 64 percent of the counties with the highest food insecurity according to feedingamerica.org. There are over 2.8 million rural households with children, that for varying amounts of time, throughout the year, will not know where their next meal will come from.

While filming “Ivy League Farmer,” I was made aware of a movement called “Drive to Feed Kids” that is doing something about domestic childhood hunger.

Started by Nutra Blend, Drive to Feed Kids is a program to bring awareness to the issues of food insecurity and domestic hunger and raise money for local backpack programs. Nutra Blend

and other feed manufacturers across the U.S. are providing vital resources to those in local the community working to bring nutritious food to school children who would otherwise go hungry over weekends and when out of school. These “backpack programs” assemble meals and nutritious food into “backpacks” and distribute them to food insecure schoolchildren, ensuring they will have food when they are not at school.

These backpack programs are largely independent and staffed by community volunteers that simply want to help the kids in their home towns. Through the efforts of Drive to Feed Kids, over 20 million meals have been provided to hungry children in the U.S., with another 8 million forecasted to be given out this year.

As I have gotten to know folks in the agriculture industry, I’ve come to realize that I’ve not met a harder-working or more attentive and kind-hearted group anywhere, ever. It’s reassuring knowing that our country’s food production is in such capable and compassionate hands – something I will make sure to communicate to all my friends living in the urban jungle.

Tech Talk: Down came the rain and washed the itsy-bitsy trace mineral out?* Editor’s Note: Technical Talk article was submitted by Micronutrients

What happens to a free-choice mineral after a weather event? Many commercial feed manufacturers utilize weatherization techniques to help reduce losses because of the weather, so we know this can be an issue. The University of Florida conducted research to determine if the source of copper, zinc and manganese would be affected by precipitation.1 The three sources of copper, zinc and manganese that were evaluated were IntelliBond®, sulfate sources, and an organic proteinate.

Dr. John Arthington’s lab at the University of Florida simulated 2-inch and 4-inch rainfall events over the course of a week. One third of the total precipitation (2-inch or 4-inch) was applied to the minerals on Monday, another third on Wednesday, and the remaining third on Friday. The water used to mimic rain water was deionized water at an average pH of 5.6.

Two types of mineral formulations were tested in this trial. The first formulation was a simple salt-based formula made up of four ingredients: salt and one each of the three sources of copper, zinc and manganese. This formulation was designed to more easily determine if there were differences between the trace mineral sources (Figure 1).

The second formulation was a complete free-choice mineral designed to be similar to a commercial mineral that would be used on cattle ranches. This formulation was designed to detect differences between the three trace mineral sources in a commercial mineral (Figure 2).

The researchers calculated the accumulated trace mineral loss over the treatments by measuring the concentration of copper, zinc and manganese in the collected leachate and compared that back to the original concentrations.

This research demonstrated that after both a 2-inch and a 4-inch simulated precipitation event equally distributed over three days that total copper, zinc and manganese losses were less (P<0.05) for IntelliBond than sulfate and an organic proteinate trace mineral source. Interestingly, the 2-inch rainfall event accounted for all of the leaching loss in the salt-based mineral and nearly all of the leaching loss in the commercial type mineral. To further compound the issue, there was more loss from zinc and manganese sources than copper sources. This data not only suggests that the amount of actual mineral consumed per ounce is less, but also that the formulated ratios (i.e. zinc:copper ratio) are impacted.

The low water solubility of IntelliBond trace minerals is advantageous for free-choice minerals that are exposed to the elements. Using IntelliBond in free-choice mineral programs for cattle is one way to provide the confidence that the cattle you feed are getting the minerals that you want them to get – and not being washed out the water spout.

The 2017 Nutra Blend Customer Rewards Trip was another unforgettable time. Paying tribute to our Nation’s heroes throughout the Freedom to Feed themed week, attendees heard from inspiring and thought-provoking symposium speakers as they provided testimonials of courage, as well as trends of the agricultural industry.

One such speaker, Captain J. Charles Plumb, USNR, (Ret.) began the week with his moving presentation of survival for nearly six years as a Prisoner of War in Vietnam. A friend and colleague to Captain Plumb, LtCol Oliver North shared his experience, as the host of “War Stories,” the award-winning military documentary series on Fox News Channel that evening aboard the USS Missouri. As the evening ended, we honored our veterans on stage as Kristin Hill sang “God Bless the USA.” A powerful moment as we paid tribute to our fellow friends and colleagues for their service.

From stories of inspiration, attendees heard the latest updates and celebrate achievements on the Drive to Feed Kids, Drive the Message and Drive: No Boundaries programs.

New to this year’s trip was the Platinum Vendor Presentations. The 20-minute presentations gave attendees the opportunity hear about the latest innovative ideas of the industry and follow-up with vendors at the annual trade show.

As with any Nutra Blend trip, we like to have a good time. During the beach party and Sawyer Brown concert Wednesday afternoon, guests participated in the male hula dancing

contest, Musubi spam eating contest, lawn games and sent their favorite Nutra Blend sales reps into the dunk tank!

Vice President of Sales, North America Randy Shanks was sent into the dunk tank thanks to the spontaneous donations of his fellow colleagues and friends. Wrapping up the concert, Mark Miller, lead singer of Sawyer Brown, offered to go into the tank, but under one stipulation … to receive more donations than Shanks. And, just like that, guests began making pledges, sending Miller into the tank. In an afternoon, more than $142,000 was raised to benefit Meds & Food for Kids.

The week wrapped up with a luau dinner at the Polynesian Cultural Center, viewing of the new movie “Where the Fast Lane Ends” and after party. Guests had the opportunity to meet the cast and director of the new movie.

Limonade is a village about two miles from the Meds & Food for Kids factory in Cap-Haitian, Haiti. The town is right off the main road, and then the village homes are dispersed among the countryside. This region is scattered with malnutrition. In partnership with the MFK Nutrition Team, Anise was a champion nurse at Clinique de Vie just outside the town. There is a small church and school where the nurse consults and treats both children at the school and families in the nearby village homes. Common consultations include injuries and burns, diarrhea, cough, or pneumonia.

The MFK Team and Anise started the Medika Mamba program in September 2016 by screening all the children in the school. After several weeks of treating the young students in the Medika Mamba program, Clinique de Vie advertised the program to the community and the number of admissions in the program increased again. It was a miracle to see these children improve. Some of them were in really bad shape.

There were approximately 20-30 children in the program from September until December 2016. By February 2017 it seemed that we had treated all the malnourished children in our immediate neighborhood. At the end of March 2017, the MFK Nutrition Team marched their way down and around the rural roads of Limonade, walking door-to-door informing mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, cousins and neighbors of the Medika Mamba program. The Team screened kids in their yards, gave talks about nutrition, and found 14 children in the rural community who qualified for the malnutrition program and are now close to their graduation weights at Clinique de Vie.

Nursery pig producers all strive to raise healthy and heavy piglets, but a common occurrence they face when transitioning nursery pigs from milk-based diets to feed-based diets is reduced feed intake, often causing an outbreak of diarrhea. While undergoing this transition, piglets experience a lot of stress and their immune systems can be compromised, resulting in threatened animal well-being and lost feed:gain.

With a susceptible immune system, a piglet’s gut health fails, which directly affects its ability to absorb nutrients efficiently and to convert them into energy in order to gain weight. Supplementing trace minerals with high bioavailability has been shown to support immune health and encourage weight gain in nursery piglets.

Research has shown highly bioavailable organic trace minerals (OTM) added to nursery pig diets allow for improved growth rates compared to piglets supplemented with an inorganic trace mineral (ITM). Even with utilizing lower dietary concentrations of trace minerals, piglets fed an OTM are heavier at nursery exit and have better gain efficiency than those supplemented with an ITM.1

The improvements in feed conversion and growth in piglets indicate fewer digestive disorders and a stronger immune system limiting diarrhea. Also, by utilizing a higher quality more bioavailable OTM, like MINTREX chelated trace minerals, lower supplemental levels are needed in the diet to be effectively absorbed. This means smaller amounts of minerals are wasted compared to supplementing with an ITM. By supplying the growing piglet with the highest quality nutrition, its health and growth are optimized increasing the producer’s success and profit.
