    Highlights of 5th Nutraceutical Summit 2009 & NuFFooDs Expo28th -30th October,2009 New Delhi

    Indias Flagship Nutraceutical, Functional Foods, Processed Food, DietarySupplements and Ingredients Show

    The 5th Nutraceutical Summit 2009 and NuFFoods Expo was the most dynamicplatform for all the stakeholders of the Food and Nutraceutical industry to learnnew technologies, to launch new products & leverage their business. The focaltheme of the Summit was Innovate, Regulate, Accelerate.

    influential groups like Dieticians, Nutritionists and Doctors as well as largehealth conscious and upwardly mobile consumers of India.

    CEO Summit - A special industry networking event was attended by delegates

    and invitees, representing the Who's Who of the Nutraceutical, Pharma and FoodIndustry. The focal theme of the Panel Discussion was Hurdles & Enablers forthe NT Revolution in India after IT & BT. This was followed with a NetworkingDinner.

    The Annual Nutra Award was constituted to honour the Lifetime Achievement ofeminent personality of the year in this industry sector. Dr. Ashok Vaidya,Research Director of Kasturba Health Society, was honored with LifetimeAchievement Award in the field of Ayurceuticals synergizing with Nutraceuticalfor the wellness of society.

    The Doctors & Nutritionists forum deliberated on the new developments in theNutraceutical and Health food sector with special focus on Women's Healthcare.The panel discussion was conducted with the support of Indian DieteticAssociation.

    The Summit received excellent feedback from the participants, regarding therelevance of the topics, speakers, panelists and quality of event.

    The session addressed the novel and the developmental trends for the food andnutraceutical sector of Industry. The presentations had the Speakers sharing newtechnologies that can be adopted, novel ingredients that can be used in theindustry in creating innovative products and new products ready for market.

    Nutra Markets on the Growth Curve

    The session on markets showed us the Global market for nutraceutical productsincreased from US$ 117 billion in 2007 to an estimated US$ 124 billion in 2008.The market projections show that is it Projected to reach US$ 177 billion in 2013(CAGR of 7.4%).

    The Nutraceuticals sector in India estimated at US$400 million in 2007 and isprojected to cross US$550 million in 2009.

    Presentations on A Look at the Developed World Market and The opportunity forIndia giving the industry representatives in the audience a positive messageabout the parallel growth of the sector for India.

    Biotechnology applications for Food innovation

    Modern biotechnology applied to food is based on a combination of moleculargenetics, applied enzymology and fermentation technology. The session was aneducation in how Nutrigenomics and Enzymes can signify the new era innutrition science.

    The science of Nutrigenomics can promote human health or disease through acombination of 3 factors lifestyle, nutrition and genome. Food and pharmacompanies worldwide have recognized the commercial opportunities and haveembarked on substantial nutrigenomics efforts.

    One of the presentations was on maximizing nutrient utilization and developingenzyme-based formulations for nutritional support.

    Global Regulatory trends, CGMP, Labelling and Claims

    The session offered informative inputs to the audience about the rules andmandates of different Regulatory authorities from across the world, with theobjective of safe-guarding the interest of consumers.

    The Speakers offered guidelines to Companies looking at overseas destinationsas a business arena and urged Companies in India to conform to manufacturing,

    marketing , import, stock and sale of raw materials and finished products at paror even better than the regulated and developed global markets .

    This can be achieved through a science based regime of cGMP-guidelines ,guidelines for nutrient & health claims and appropriate product labeling . It isCGMPs that will ensure that every food supplement on the market has the safety,identity, purity, quality, and strength in it.

    India reaching Regulatory in Nutraceuticals

    In keeping with the Industrys tremendous need and desire for an effective and

    globally accepted regulatory mechanism for foods for special dietary uses orfunctional foods or Nutraceuticals or health supplements, this session served asa platform for the views of the panelists and audience including policy makers,industry, and scientist fraternity.

    The delegates were invited to send their inputs and suggestions keeping in mindthat all suggestions should reflect the need for Safe, effective and qualityproducts encourage Innovation with well researched Consumer information.

    Traditional Knowledge Industry and Nutraceuticals

    Both the Nutraceutical and Ayurvedic industry was encouraged to leverage the

    opportunities by combining the traditional knowledge of Indian Ayurvedicmedicine with the modern technology of manufacturing to bring you the best ofthe two worlds.

    Traditional Systems are a rich source for Nutraceuticals because of their efficacy,long traditional usage which ensures safety and a close cultural proximity.

    The session encouraged both Ayurvedic and Nutraceutical industry to combinestrengths and transition from traditional knowledge to modern Nutraceuticals.
