We will provide details on new members and sub committees in our next newsletter. We thank our retiring members for their commitment and service and welcome the new parents to the group. At the meeting Neil White, our former Principal was farewelled and thanked for his dedication, commitment and ongoing community support. YEAR 8 NEWS Our Year 8 students are settling in well and have a camp at Mylor rapidly approaching in week 10. If you have any comments or suggestions please contact: Anne Barclay - Year 8 Assistant Principal [email protected] Year Level Managers Rob Moresi [email protected] or Damien Jones [email protected] OPEN DAY We are trialling a different approach to Open Day this year and holding this event on a Mon- day evening rather than a Sunday afternoon. Open Day will be held on 26 March from 5 - 7pm. This is an opportunity for current and prospective families to tour the school, talk with staff about programs and gain information about how the school operates. An information session will be held at 6:45pm in the Stadium. Tours will commence at 5:00pm outside the Library. NAPLAN NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy) testing will be on 16, 17 & 18 May. Skills that will be tested include reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy. These tests are undertaken at school and are considered part of the curriculum. It is important for you and your child to know that NAPLAN in not a pass/fail test. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to let them know that it is a rou- tine part of their school program and to encourage them to do the best they can on the day. All students in Year 9 are expected to participate in NAPLAN. Later in the year we will send parents an individual student NAPLAN report that you can view and monitor how your child is progressing. NAPLAN provides us with considerable information to help inform and guide our teaching. It is, however, only one assessment and should not be a cause of anxiety for children or their parents/caregivers. At Nuriootpa High School this year, we are particularly interested in supporting our students to aim for improvement from their Year 7 NAPLAN results and achieve their best, so that the re- sults are an accurate reflection of their abilities. We will be working with students on developing positive mindsets towards NAPLAN this year, with the aim to achieve growth in their learning over the last 2 years. FROM THE PRINCIPAL - continued FACILITIES UPGRADE Our STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Maths) development has now commenced with the demolition of the interior of our old cream brick well under way. We are extremely excited to consider what this building will look like when it is filled with 21st Century infrastructure, furniture, equipment and learning space. Opportunities are endless. Other facilities upgrades occurring over the April holidays include:

The toilets adjacent to the library will be renovated

An internal wall installed in the upstairs Maths area to create a breakout space for specialist maths programs and flexible learning spaces

Security Cameras will be installed on all school entrances to increase security after school hours

Re-sealing of the all floors in the Technology Centre

Replacement of benchtops in Electronics

Front Office/Administration area renovation In the term 2 holidays we have scheduled the following facilities developments:

Extension to the Automotive Shed

Installation of Solar Panels and LED lights from our $250 000 grant

Complete remodelling and renovation of a Home Ec Kitchen and Office Space FUTURE FACILITIES PLANS A team from DECD Capacity Management visited Nuriootpa High School last week to assess how the large increase in student enrolments has impacted on our functional capacity. Essentially they are assessing our capacity to continue increasing enrol-ments as the Barossa Community continues to grow. They believe we are currently close to capacity, so we are very interested in exploring what the possibilities may be in the future for new buildings to house our ever increasing student population. With the change of government this week, and the policy change to include Year 7s in High School, Nuriootpa High School could be looking at quite a significant increase in student numbers, therefore justifying a significant number of new buildings. We are very excited to consider the possibilities and liaise with our school community about the future of education in the Barossa. Kirsty Gebert

HOW’S YOUR STUDENT’S ATTENDANCE?

A reminder that we are focusing on attendance this year because we recognise its importance in engaging students in learning and giving them the best chance of success. Students with 5 to 9 absences per term are considered habitual non-attenders and those with 10 or more absences are considered chronic non-attenders. Where does your student sit on this scale? Stu-dents with 5 absences per term fall short of the DECD attendance goal of 90%. Note that legitimate, educational reasons for non-attendance (eg an offsite learning program such as a school-based apprenticeship or a TAFE course do not count as ab-sences). At the end of this term we will be contacting families of students who are habitual or chronic non-attenders to discuss the reason for their absences and how the school and families can work together to improve their attendance.

SPORTS DAY

On Friday 16 March, Nuriootpa High School hosted its annual Sports Day for 2018. This year saw the introduction of 5 House Teams- Sturt (blue), Light (yellow), Angas (red), Coulthard (pink) and Murray (green). Students and staff were assigned a House at the beginning of the year to compete in for overall champions on the day. Everyone embraced the new system and the col-ours on the day were fantastic, along with House Banners and chants to add some extra flair to the carnival. Participation in-creased throughout from the more formal Track and Field events to the fun and exciting House Novelty Relays. It was great to have numerous dedicated staff out early in the morning to assist with setting up for the day and also helping pack up at the conclusion. A big thank you to the parent helpers who gave up their time to help out on the day, it is hard to run a carnival without your support. The SRC did a fantastic job with supplying delicious food and drinks for everyone and a huge thank you goes to liaison teachers Balin Powardy and Asher Rohde for their dedication and organisation toward the day. Finally, thank you to the entire staff for their efforts both leading up to and on Sports Day, it is greatly appreciated and en-sured the day ran as smoothly as it did. NURIOOTPA HS - MUSIC FOCUS SCHOOL

Welcome to the Nuri HS music department for 2018! This is a very special place – we are one of 19 Music Focus Schools across our state of South Australia. This is a very busy place too. We have 120+ musicians learning their particular instrument, receiving an instrumental lesson on various days of the week. These students also play in various ensembles; rehearse regular-ly and will perform to a variety of audiences throughout the year. These gigs include, Wine Launch, assemblies, class assess-ments and lot of other concerts around our region. The classroom music teachers, Shelley Parker and Caitlin Randall are complimented by a team of Instrumental Music Teachers. These teachers teach here one day a week and at other Primary and Secondary Schools across the Barossa region and northern suburbs. Jacob Staehr – Brass Chris Yeend – Percussion Tim Hogan – Guitar Bec Peregi – Vocals Karen Paterson – Keyboard/Piano Keiran O’Dea– Vocals Sonia Samain – Woodwind Our ensembles, which include Concert Band, Choir and Percussion ensemble, will ‘hit the road’ again in 2018 and tour to vari-ous schools in our region to play concerts. We look forward to visiting these schools, to not only to showcase the students’ gifts and talents but to also promote music at Nuri HS. We are aiming to make the locals be aware that NHS is the place to be if you are into music and want to learn an instrument – to make our school a thriving hub of musical talents. On Monday the 5 May the Open Boys and Girls Tennis teams travelled to Clare to take on Clare High School and Faith Lutheran College. The Open Boys were successful in beating Clare 5 sets to 1, but went down to a strong Faith contingent, losing 6-0. The Open Girls lost to Clare on games, after tying 3 sets a piece and then lost to Faith as well. All players should be commended for their positive attitude and being good representatives of the school. Angus Magarey
