YEAR 12 PRESENTATION NIGHT
We recently celebrated the graduation of our class of 2015 at a wonderful night of
awards and recognition of student achievement. Once again our community of busi-
nesses and families supported the evening with donations and special prizes. Many
thanks to everyone for their generous and ongoing support. Congratulations and best
wishes to our graduating students. We wish them well for their future and hope they
take many positive and beneficial memories with them from NHS. A special thank you
to Ms Reichstein, Ms Gebert, Ms Reinke, the Year 12 Home group teachers and the
many staff involved for their preparation and planning for the evening.
See pages 4, 5, 6 & 7 of this newsletter for a full list of award winners.
WINE CENTRE DINNER
Our recent fundraising dinner was a great success. Over $6000 was raised and we al-
ready have plans in place to install new cool water drinking fountains and seating for
students. In conjunction with the SRC we are also looking at the purchase of air-
conditioning for use in the halls and wine centre. The very generous donations by
community businesses made for an exciting and productive set of auctions. With a
great band, food and wine available the evening was enjoyed by over 80 people.
Many thanks to Peter Shute and the organising committees, Karen Underwood and
Jeanette Hanckel for their work on the auction items and the students involved in set
up and serving on the night.
Please see the full list of companies/individuals who kindly donated towards the auc-
tions on page 6 of this newsletter.
YEAR 8 IN 2016 PARENT INFORMATION
An information evening was held last night for current Year 7 students, carers and par-
ents. The event provided an opportunity to present information about the ongoing
transition program, arrangements for next year and how our new Bring Your Own De-
vice (BYOD) system will work. It was great to see the many new families that are joining
our school as their child sets out on the exciting, challenging and rewarding journey
through secondary school. Thanks to Mr Moresi, Ms Barclay and Mr Barkley for their
preparation and presentations.
REMEMBRANCE DAY ASSEMBLY
We recognised the sacrifices and commitment of our armed services personnel at an
assembly on Wednesday morning. The ceremony was conducted at our memorial
wall and provided us with an opportunity to acknowledge the local members of our
community that have lost their life in the service of our country. It also provided us with
the time to reflect and remember the many sacrifices that are made to protect the
wonderful life we have in Australia. Our thoughts are with the families most closely af-
fected by the events of war and conflict.

awards.
On Wednesday the 11th of November four of the SRC students were invited to attend the RSL Nu-
riootpa Remembrance Day service to place a wreath at the Memorial. We would like to thank
Abby Underwood, Serena Lange, Jemma Umlauf and Matthew Schultz for attending the service.
Students from Nuriootpa High School attended the Relay for Life on the 7th and 8th of the November. Relay for Life is
a fundraising organisation that raises awareness for people who have or had cancer. The students walked around
Faith Lutheran College’s oval for 19 hours, raising awareness for cancer. To support the cause you can donate

IN MEMORIUM
Noel Westley Bauer (30/12/1941 – 24/10/2015) came to Nuriootpa High School from Whyalla in 1973. He was offered the position of Deputy Principal and remained in the role until he retired in 1997. He was a great school administrator and organiser, bringing these skills to the fore under a suc-cession of principals namely; John Roberts, Rob Hill, Rosemary Law, Brenton George and Pat White. Noel was a passionate teacher of Chemistry and over the years inspired many students to share his passion and undertake further studies, with many becoming Winemakers. He was also the consummate musician whose contribution to NHS music was substantial. Noel loved playing the tenor and baritone saxophones in the concert band and stage band and was a member of the Nuriootpa Town and the Leader KGB Big Band. In his early days at NHS he also sang in the four part choir. Few people knew that he was also a skilled drummer. When he retired from teaching in 1996, Noel was able to marry his love of red wine with his passion for Chemistry, by taking up a job in the Penfold labs. Noel was held in high regard by the staff and students at Nuriootpa High School and the entire Barossa Valley Community. He will be remembered by many for his excellent administrative skills, contagious passion for Chemistry, for his firm behaviour management and love of music. An amazing educator, Noel was highly respected by all and will be sadly missed. Natalie Axo

On Friday 23 October in the Winery at Nuriootpa High School a large and sumptuous dinner consisting of four cours-
es with drinks was held for over eighty diners. Music was provided by local band Colonel Mustard and was just one
of the many highlights of the evening.
Many gifts were generously donated by businesses throughout the Barossa Valley, which then could be purchased
by silent auction or bid on, at the “not so silent auction”.
Food to die for, wonderful music and ambiance, who could have asked for more! We raised over six thousand dol-
lars to provide drinking fountains and shaded area for the school.

ATSI students were treated to an information and traditional bushfoods tasting at the Barossa Bushgardens, Nurioot-
pa on Friday 30 October. Rebecca Kimlin, Aboriginal Health Services Coordinator from Gawler Health Services and
Jack Sparrow, Aboriginal Youth Worker, led discussion around the main chronic health conditions Aboriginal people
are at risk of getting and how to prevent this. We all received an ATSI guide to healthy eating. Rebecca also spoke
about and explained what Closing the Gap meant.
Pam Payne, Barossa Bushgardens Nursery Manager then led students on a Bush walk, around the Barossa Bushgar-
dens where students learnt about traditional bush foods and their uses. Students also made 3 different dampers
using Wattleseed, Salt Bush and Bush Tomato. Quangdong jam and honey topped off the damper. Students also
tried delicious Lemon myrtle and coconut cupcakes, made by Monica Pjevac from Gawler Health Services. I have
included the recipe below if you would like to try them at home.
Lemon Myrtle and Coconut Cupcakes
Ingredients
170 grams unsalted butter
1 cup of sugar
3 eggs
¾ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
¾ teaspoon almond extract
1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons Ground Lemon Myrtle
½ teaspoon Baking Powder
¼ teaspoon Baking Soda
½ cups Buttermilk
100 grams shredded coconut
Method;
Cream the butter and sugar in a
bowl until light and fluffy,
add the eggs one at a time,
add the vanilla and almond extracts.
In a separate bowl, sift together the
dry ingredients and mix
the buttermilk, whilst folding in the
batter. Fold in coconut.
Bake cupcakes for 20 minutes at 180C.

WHEELCHAIR AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL
The first organised game of competitive wheel-
chair Australian Rules Football was played at the
RAAF base in Adelaide and Nuriootpa High’s
own year 8 student Brodie Healy took part. A
team of injured Defence Force (ADF) diggers
undergoing rehab at Darwin's Solider Recovery
Centre took on a Disability Sports Australia (DSA)
side made up of locals from South Australia in-
cluding Brodie. The Defence Force team went
down to the DSA team 16.8.104 to 14.5.89.
In wheelchair football, many of the rules are the
same as the code it is based on. Six points are
awarded for a goal and only one for a behind.
Kicks are replaced with handballs and handballs
replaced with underarm throws. A red Sherrin
football is used, with the game split into four quar-
ters played on a basketball court with goal posts
at either end.
Congratulations Brodie and all the best for future
competitions.

the latest Herald along with other finalists. He was awarded a medal, $700
and $1,000 for the school.
