NT Live Music Census 2017

Undertaken by MusicNT in partnership with the Live Music Office, the census project mapped live music across the Territory in August 2017 through monitoring available programs, gig guides, social media, connecting with industry participants including the hospitality industry as well as word of mouth. Music NT Executive Director Mark Smith said: “MusicNT is excited to present the first ever NT live music census capturing the vibrancy of the NT live music sector. This census brings together indigenous artists, songwriters, festivals, pubs and clubs, churches, the tourism and hospitality sector and more across the NT. Seeing the regional comparisons is fascinating, and whilst there are likely events and venues that may not have been picked up in the process this time, the census will be undertaken annually. We encourage artists and venues putting on gigs at the same time this year to not only promote their events as much as possible but also get in touch with MusicNT and make sure that they are included in 2018 and beyond. The results clearly demonstrate that live music is the lifeblood of the Territory and across the Territory musicians and bands are regularly performing. In the coming years this data will be integral in capturing the continued growth of the NT live music sector.”

Highlights:• 530 gigs were presented across August 2017.

• 106 venues hosted live music

• Hotels and Clubs provided 51 venues and 259 gigs

• Monsoons in Darwin and the Big 4 Caravan Park in Katherine tied equal first at 31 gigs each

• Greater Darwin and the Top End had the most music at 345 events

• There were 29 Indigenous gigs in August 2017

• There was more live music in the Katherine Region (95) than Alice Springs (65).

• Tennant Creek and the Barkly Region had 23 gigs

• There were 11 gigs in Arnhem Land and the Top End

Music NT

MusicNT is the peak body for contemporary music in the Northern Territory. It has a membership base of 3500 individuals and delivers programs across the Territory and across the country. MusicNT’s mission is to support the growth and development of the contemporary music industry in the Northern Territory and we do that through a suite of programs that support and encourage NT musicians to create and export their music to the world as well as working to grow the NT music industry.

The Live Music Office

The Live Music Office works to increase opportunities for live music in Australia by identifying and advocating for better policy, regulation and strategy. Established by the Federal Government, in partnership with APRA AMCOS, the scope includes planning, licensing and regulatory policies, as well as cultural, audience and market development strategies.

Hospitality NT

Hospitality NT is the peak industry body for the hospitality sector in the Northern Territory, representing pubs, clubs, restaurants, wayside inns, casinos, and accommodation hotels. Many Hospitality NT Members provide live music and entertainment, employing and contracting NT musicians. Hospitality NT assists Members with regulatory information and advice and seeks to protect and grow our industry’s entertainment offerings.

The census results reflect live music being presented across the regions and types of music including festivals as well as venues. Many of the events were presented by the tourism industry including accommodation providers as well as Hotels and Clubs. This report highlights the contribution made by the hotel, licensed club and hospitality industry in supporting the NT music industry. The 2017 Northern Territory (NT) music census will aid related industry, business and governing bodies in determining the NT music industry’s strengths and weaknesses. These censuses are by no means new in Australia. They have demonstrated how valuable the industry is to each State and Territory, which it has been proven, in many situations, to have a higher economic value than sport, long thought otherwise. This newly gathered information, will help guide policy so the music industry can flourish and add economic and cultural value to the whole of the Northern Territory. Given that live music contributes to an important part of a vibrant social scene, I think it is a great idea to have statistics available to monitor the health of live music in the territory. Not only recognising the great venues in Darwin such as the Railway Club, Happy Yess, The Ski Club, Mindil Markets, Monsoons and the Darwin Entertainment Centre, but also Epilogue in Alice Springs for example, and importantly, the contribution of Barkly Regional Arts and Katherine Regional Arts in supporting live music in Tennant Creek and Katherine.
